Social Security Sham

It is a national tragedy that people may be willing to put aside the issue of Social Security reform because Congressional Leaders on the Democrat side – such as Dick Durbin and Harry Reid – have been standing behind the position that Social Security is not a problem. While discussing the impending “fiscal cliff” negotiations last week, Harry Reid proclaimed (yet again), that

“Social Security is not part of the problem, That’s one of the myths the Republicans have tried to create,” he said. “Social Security is sound for the next many years.

Reid justifies this outrageous and distorted view by asserting that Social Security is not adding to the current deficit since the the cash in and out is roughly the same. While that may technically true, it is technically true only in the sense that it is analogous to an individual who is running up millions in credit every day — and then that person says that since he doesn’t have to pay it back right away till next year or the year after, it doesn’t affect his immediate budget.

The fallacy of this logic is that although the Social Security cash in may be equal to the cash out, the cash in includes everything we are getting, while the cash out doesn’t include the responsibilities due to come. The cash out formula they are referring to excludes the trillions that are being promised to existing workers in the future while their Social Security tax is being collected today. As the years go by we are continuing to incur the deep cost of future payment obligations that the Democrats are conveniently not accounting for – and it’s going to get impossible to pay those bills when they come due. Yet, those obligations are every bit as real as charges on a credit card.

Equally disturbing is the fact that the media is complicit in promoting this fable. Each year that that passes without fixing the system creates trillions of additional deficit to be paid by our children and grandchildren. Our media is feeding the Democrats’ incompetence by promoting their sham and failing to report the truth about the insolvency of Social Security.

The Democrats love to make the claim that Social Security is a popular program because of how seniors react when anyone discusses changes to the program.

I say bullcrap! Seniors don’t “love” or even like Social Security. They just want to get back the money (and more frankly) that they had forcibly confiscated over decades of their working lives. They aren’t about to let politicians take something they feel they’ve earned.

I want the GOP to challenge the Democrats’ false claim by introducing a bill to make Social Security completely voluntary for everyone. Let’s see how many opt out as soon as possible.

To attract Democrat support, to try to anyway, I propose the following:

    1. Everyone that opts out forfeits all contributions. This will serve the dual purpose of immediately removing those people as unfunded liabilities and keeping most ‘near seniors’ enrolled.

    2. Employers of individuals who choose to opt out must still pay their half of the employee’s FICA. This will retain some funding for the program. Even though we conservatives all know that the employer’s half of FICA are really wages not paid to the employee this ought to bring some Dems over to the idea.

So, this idea has something for everyone and has the benefit of allowing us to test the Dems beliefs and prove them false.

I’m 46 myself and would opt out in a heartbeat.

If too many people opt out of the system, SS will collapse and the currently supported seniors know it. They will not get back their money and so they will not support such a change.

Something that might change some minds is to make SS account truly owned by the individual and make it inheritable by survivors. Clear out the phony accounting and show actual amounts contributed as well as what has been used. In other words, make SS act the way Dems have demagogue it as.

I am the same age as you and I am not expecting a dime from the system. I am counting on my other retirement savings. If the government tries to lay so much as a finger on those savings, they will be pulling back a bloody stump.

Social Security was corrupted in the 1960s under LBJ when he allowed for the use of SSA funds to be used in the general fund. Since then government spending has skyrocketed and we have never had a balanced budget. Yes folks, thats correct, the clinton “balanced budget” was “balanced” by using SS money to buy TBills and spending the surplus. Thus putting us at a cash disadvantage for social security (since the mid to late 90s may end up being the all time high for SSA payments) for basically the rest of its existence. Short of jacking up payroll taxes on the young as more and more boomers retire to florida this thing will spiral to an insanity level.
