I went to Purdue, and it was wonderful. I had a few really liberal professors, but no one ever made me feel like being a conservative was a bad thing. I was never penalized for being a conservative, and at least in my experience, free speech reigned supreme...the administration did a FABULOUS job! I'd highly recommend it for conservative people looking for diversity in education.

Thanks for the props...I really do hope people are listening :o) (And I also hope I don't have an irritating voice...slight southern drawl with a Midwest kick...you be the judge, lol.)

Even though I said it was harder to see through the airbrushing (awesome analogy), it was pretty much like peeling the layers off of a particularly rotten onion. You knew it was bad in the beginning, but it just got worse :o)

... and I didn't see the male stripper-sleaze appeal. He always tried to project a cool, detached demeanor, even though we were screaming about Ayers, redistribution, Wright, re-making America, etc.

I think Sarah may surprise many young people. (BTW, I was 24 in '84, and I was totally behind Reagan, even further back, in 1980, at 20).

Keep up the good fight!

...coupled with a complicit media - the kind of deception that characterized the Communist world, which collapsed in your childhood. Basically, the assistance of an adoring airbrushing media, a well-scripted campaign, and a candidate with a tremendous knack for scripted perfomances produced a cult of personality that has little historical precedence in our nation.

Or to put it another way, given the calibration of your bs detector, the bs level of the Obama campaign was of a magnitude so off-the-scale that it blinded your bs detector - and those of an awful lot of your contemporaries as well (along with those who were older and should have been wiser and whose bs detectors should have been better calibrated).

So don't whip yourself too hard for the past. You've discovered the man behind the curtain (to use the Wizard of Ox analogy) - or that the Emperor has no clothers - so now your task is to recalibrate the bs detectors of your peers to help them to regain their sight too.

And judging from this diary, you clearly understand the task ahead.

Because I know that, as least speaking for myself, that my BS detector is among the most finely-tuned I have ever seen. I am not, nor are people my age, very forgiving when it comes to politicians (or anyone for that matter) philandering and smooching their way into the top.

Barack Obama seems to be the exception to the rule; my general distaste for his Administration aside, when it came to soundbites (read: the news most people my age catch), he did NOT seem like an unctuous phony. He seems to be the exception to my "philandering and smooching" rule. It was harder, at least in the beginning, to catch him with his hand in the cookie jar because he put out this aura of being so cool, calm, and relaxed.

However, I know better...but many people do not.

describes my daughter to a T. You said something to the affect that things will have to get real bad before there can be a culture shift, because it's too cool and hip right now to be a Republican/conservative hater.

My daughter has no political idiology. And, when I can pin her down, she's not that far left of me. For example: she's vehemently opposed to late term abortion. And she doesn't support most government social programs.

With her it's the greedy capiralist, rascist and war monger meme. Which, of course, she cannot support with anything resembling a factual or cogent arguement.

She's a lefty because her friends at Nobu are lefties and it's cool.

So, I'll keep working on her and watch for the signs of enlightenment as our country goes down the tubes..

...a lot of people my age are getting "mugged by reality." However, hating Bush, the Republicans, and conservative ideals in general is so popular right now that it's going to have to get pretty bad before there is a culture shift. That will make it easier for R's to win big in 2010.

Thanks for the recco!

Those I know, however, do indeed "recognize that they stand on the shoulders of giants."

Many thought that Reagan would be unable to relate to the young, but what did get related was their experience with watching their parents struggle under Carter's recession and malaise/defeatism and the contrast with how Reagan's conservative policies worked for their parents and for their own prospects.

Mugged by reality comes to mind, and it is happening now.

I expect huge GOP gains across the board in 2010. Obama's personality cult will wilt as he owns the Great Recession which next year will be deeper and accompanied by higher int rates and inflation.

Da' Yutes will relate to that.

They flocked to Reagan and the GOP due to the cultural relevance of pocketbooks.

...who are currently in uniform and in Harm's Way ( or have been there recently or are headed there soon) fall in her generational continuum?

Are they potential liberals about to get mugged by reality, has their service re-directed their generation's inner-directedness, or have they always been the good kids who earns their nation's pride and gratitude and recognize that they stand on the shoulders of giants?
