NAACP accuses tea party of tolerating bigotry

“We felt the time had come to stand up and say, ‘It’s time for the tea party to be responsible members of this democracy and make sure they don’t tolerate bigots or bigotry among their members,’” NAACP President Ben Jealous said ahead of the debate.

“We don’t have a problem with the tea party’s existence. We have an issue with their acceptance and welcoming of white supremacists into their organizations,” he said.

Okay, NAACP President Ben Jealous, here’s the thing. I don’t have a problem with the NAACP’s existence. I just have an issue with its acceptance and welcoming of ignorant, bigoted, race-baiting losers like you. Your new closed-doors resolution does not–what was it?–empower [me] to actually look at [myself] and see that there are those who are noticing things that I think most tea partiers don’t want.” No, actually, your resolution empowers me to show up at your next meeting and offend you with my conservativeness.

If it were true that the tea party “embraces bigotry,” I would be behind this guy 100%. No organization should ever operate on a platform of intolerance. The fact of the matter is, though, that the tea party does no such thing. For the NAACP to base their assumptions on the actions of a few yahoos that may or may not have shouted the N-word/held up an inappropriate sign/given a sideways glance to Emanuel Cleaver is dishonest, irresponsible, and socially regressive. After all, isn’t the NAACP an organization that purports to break down walls reach for the stars and move forward etc. etc. etc.?

Reality check: no effort by tea partiers will ever be enough for the NAACP.

We’ve already gone to great lengths to call out the random idiots, but there’s no way we can completely control every single person at rallies where attendance reaches into the thousands. Even though it would be impossible to As far as the NAACP is concerned (the NAACP, not black people or minorities in general), we’ll always be the ignorant hillbilly weirdos trying to out-Alabama each other with oversized Confederate flags and misspelled protest signs.

So be it. I will go to the NAACP scaffold as an ignorant hillbilly weirdo if it means irritating the likes of Ben Jealous. I know I’m not an ignorant hillbilly weirdo; hell, Ben Jealous knows I’m not an ignorant hillbilly weirdo–but he’s willing to throw an honest, tolerant, hardworking conservative like me under the bus if it means that by doing so he’s able to whip up the base for a little bit of good ol’ fashioned mudslinging.
