Racism–the New “She was asking for it!”

There’s a reason they call it “race wars”:

Gunman targeted hateful, racist, managers

Regard me (emphasis mine):

Relatives say Thornton, 34, finally cracked after suffering racial harassment in a company where he said he was singled out for being black in a predominantly white work force.

“Everybody’s got a breaking point,” said Joanne Hannah, the mother of Thornton’s longtime girlfriend.

After shooting his co-workers, Thornton hid as police moved in. He called his mother, who tried for 10 minutes to talk him out of killing himself, his uncle Will Holliday told reporters.

“He said, ‘I killed the five racists that was there that was bothering me,’” Holliday said. “He said, ‘The cops are going to come in so I am going to take care of myself.’”

What was this egregious racial violation of which he speaks?

Thornton had said he found a picture of a noose and a racial epithet written on a bathroom wall, said Hannah, of Enfield, whose daughter Kristi had dated Thornton for the past eight years.

…and? The article doesn’t mention anything else.

I’m not going to sit here and pretend I know the intimate details of this man’s employment situation, or try and justify the sick mindset that resulted in someone scrawling ignorant garbage all over the inside of a bathroom stall. I’m sure we’ll find out that Thornton had altercations with several of his coworkers, who had conveniently attended a tea party at some point. No, what I’m worried about is this:

“Everybody’s got a breaking point,” said Joanne Hannah, the mother of Thornton’s longtime girlfriend.

Please, somebody scream and flail if I’m wrong, but that smacks of good ol’ justification. It sounds like something you’d say, shaking your head with your eyebrows raised, before going back to tweeting about #JustinBieber’s haircut like it’s no big deal.

No big deal? Can we just step back and consider this for a second? This man, with what I will just go ahead and assume was “malice aforethought” and all that, murdered eight of his coworkers.

He didn’t fire off a nasty e-mail, or get into a slapfight in the coffee room, or cut the heads off of the secretary’s flower bouquet (I’ve seen it happen); he packed heat in his lunchbox and SHOT PEOPLE IN THE HEAD.

By now, we should be used to people playing the race card whenever possible–it’s reared its head in the healthcare debate, the immigration debate, and in the debate over whether or not Tyra picks too many white girls to be America’s Next Top Model. What gives me the willies is that his friends and relatives chose to play the race card instead of offering their condolences to the families of the people that GOT SHOT IN THE HEAD.

The news reports so far have not given any sort of indication that the shooter was seriously harassed by, or had any reason to feel threatened by, his coworkers. He said it himself–they were “bothering” him. Okay, I’ll bite–here’s a list of people that have bothered me the past few days:

1. Jason Allen
2. Justin Bieber
3. The guy who almost totaled my car for me in the parking garage this morning
4. Juan Williams, Shepard Smith, and Keith Olbermann
5. Every man who has ever addressed my chest instead of my face
6. Mormons who won’t go away
7. People who bring strollers to sales at Victoria’s Secret
8. Whoever invented pantyhose
9. Men who find it appropriate to bar-stalk me when I’m just trying to have a quiet drink with the girls
10. People who dress their pets like tiny versions of themselves

Yes, they bothered me, but I didn’t deem it appropriate to SHOOT THEM IN THE HEAD.

Have I made my point?

Call me naive, but ten years ago, I don’t think anyone would have dared suggest that workplace harassment was just cause to bring a gun to work and cap your coworkers; now, it’s easier, more commonplace, and dare I say more acceptable (in MSM circles) to whip out the race card when someone screws up. The race card has been used to justify preferential treatment, entitlement programs, and now–however offhandedly and unofficially–it has been used to justify murder.

How’s that hopey change working out for you, Connecticut?

that the fact he was being fired for theft might have been the reason this idiot lost his mind.

We’ll just have to wait till Fox brings on their favorite race pimp, Rev Sharpton. Only then will we know how we should feel about these murders.

I loathe the day they protect a man’s estate from civil lawsuits because they’ve determined he “suffered racism” in cases like this.

    Dare I even say it?

    Awesome post, Amy. :)

I don’t know who you are or where you came from, but I’ve been watching from afar and I’m going to admit that I admire your passion and drive-keep it up. :) Although you aren’t always correct, go get ‘em. :)

I never thought I’d see the day that it was bad to be white. It shouldn’t be that way. How long has this been going on? How long have white people been accused of racism when they might actually be the victims? I just shake my head in disbelief.

My dad’s got a black coworker; nice guy! Unfortunately, he’s afraid to come have supper with us because, once upon a time, the county and town I live in were highly anti-black. It’s not true anymore, but I guess the legacy remains, and not in a good way. But I guess it’s just like I’d be terrified to visit Indianapolis’s east side for fear of getting mugged, raped, shot, stabbed, etc… *starts praying for Jesus to get back down here*

    Very nice post, Amy!

as usual. You know, it’s too bad that grown-ups don’t/can’t take lessons from kids. It’s interesting, but in my high school classroom, students play the race card as a joke! They might say: “You gave me a low grade because I’m black/hispanic,” with a smile and a swagger. I look at them and say, “You’re just hasseling me cuz I’m white/female/old.” We all laugh it off because even they, the young and impressionable, know how ridiculous it is to play that game.

Are there racist people? Absolutely…on both/all sides. But, let’s face it…some people are just nuts.

News reports almost go as far as giving him justification. Is this the new reparation push? Reports try to paint him as near merciful, “bypassing a woman in a wheelchair”. Wow, how nice from a man who murdered multiple people. If the psycho coward thought it was right and defensible he wouldn’t have killed himself. These murders are indefensible on any level, even the murderer agreed. May he burn in hell.

Not only does this seem like an excuse, it implies that this could have happened to any one of us! Like it was some tragic accident – bringing guns to work and killing people – that anyone could have stumbled into because, hey, we all have our breaking point! We all have our breaking points but we don’t all go on a murderous rampage!

If the shooter flat out stated that race was his motivation, why is this not being reported and investigated as a hate crime?

What race were the victims? Anyone care to guess?

What if the race situation in this tragedy was reversed?

The current federal law regarding hate crimes deals with crimes where the offender is motivated by bias against a race, religion, disability, sexual orientatio, or ethnicity/national originn and only applies if the crime happens when a person is attending a public school or is at work or participating in one of four other “federally protected activities.”

Anyone have the link where the networks are raking that black panther dude over the coals for inciting hatred?

    *chirp chirp*

“I wish I coulda got more of the people”… disgusting.

The ex-girlfriend said to the media that Omar was always having to find new jobs because he couldn’t get along with anyone. Apparently he was one of those guys who always thinks he didn’t get the raise because he was black, that it was ok to be late to work or not show up at all without calling because he was black and it was definitely ok to steal beer and sell it to third parties on several occasions because he was black.

I feel real bad that these guys had to die because they were “bothering” him, that doesn’t necessarily sound like racial harrassment to me, maybe Omar was just an a**hole and got picked on because of it.

I live real close to this business and know several of the drivers (none of them were involved), such a tragedy.

All the news can ask the owners of Hartford Distributors is how many minorities do you have working at the plant. Approximately 20% were minorities and included 10 or 20 hispanics (sorry can’t remember actual), 1 asian and 4 black guys. Just gotta love the media fueling the hatred.

If you give someone an excuse for bad behavior, they’ll take it every time.

They keep saying the racism pushed him over the edge, sounds like it was seeing the video proof that he was stealing did that.

First they couldn’t find any jobs created by the stimulus and went on a mad hunt. Then, they lost the Gulf oil. Now, they are busy trying to find racists in order to connect them up with conservatives and Republicans.
This media spin job is all driven by Napolitano’s ‘finding’ that right wing hate groups were the new threat to American freedom. Meanwhile, we are attacked by Islamic extremists that the media pretends were just misguided outcasts.
Katie Couric is on a rampage looking behind every bush for white racists. Meanwhile, black racists are given a pass after threatening people at the polls and a disgruntled kook shots co-workers in the head.
Are these people even slightly credible?
