From One “Good Christian Bitch” to Another…

…it’s time to rediscover the line.

You know, the line that ABC has crossed by considering airing the pilot of a show called “Good Christian Bitches”:

The dramedy, based on Kim Gatlin’s novel of the same name, will be brought to life by famed “Sex and the City” and “90210” executive producer Darren Star. The plot centers on the life of reformed “mean girl” Amanda, played by “Talladega Nights” actress Leslie Bibb, who returns to her hometown of Dallas to find herself fodder for malicious gossip from the women in the Christian community.

Okay, okay, unswallow your tongue.

Listen. To be completely honest, I giggled when I first read that news story; not because I find it in any way charming or appropriate, but because I’ve totally been there. I have been the girl all the other “church girls” gossiped about behind beringed fingers after an unavoidable Baptist pot luck. I have been the victim of a collective glare from the deacon’s wives after asking a sex question during a Sunday school lesson, so the idea of the “church ladies” getting their straight-from-the-Walmart-5-pack beflowered granny panties in a wad over some obscure TV show really didn’t phase me at all.

At least not until I actually started thinking about what’s actually going on here. First of all, this is a complete load of crap:

“ABC’s core viewership is Christian, so the goal of the show won’t be to attack Christianity. Just like the book, this is a show by Christians, for (mostly) Christians, to enjoy a little prime-time self-deprecation,” Los Angeles-based entertainment expert, Jenn Hoffman said.

Jenn, we need to talk about women for a second. Let’s start with the fact that every woman currently existing on this planet has snarked about another woman, whether it be at church, in the sorority bum room, or while lunching over a pot of ridiculously overpriced fondue. We like shows like “Sex and the City,” and “Gossip Girl” and other innocent exercises in feminine self-deprecation, but only because those shows use TV fantasy world magic to make it okay to talk trash about other women. In Carrie Bradshaw’s world, a woman doesn’t care at the end of the day what some awful old Oscar de la Renta’d-up hag said about her shoes, because the whole point of that show is that the heroine is strong and beautiful and perfectly capable of giving the whole world the finger if that’s what it takes to feel good about herself.

That’s not the point of “Good Christian Bitches.” The Good Christian Bitches (I’m thinking of making a t-shirt for this) are not the lovable, snarky women we can identify with and empathize with–no, that’s the place of “reformed ‘mean girl’” Amanda. She’s the character who people will want to laugh along with and get behind; her enemies are just…bitches. And nobody likes an everyday, vanilla beyotch. They’re boring. They’re ugly. They spend their time baking pineapple upside-down cakes and having uninspiring sex with equally boring and ugly men.

The point? A show that on its face calls a woman a bitch, without giving her any redeeming qualities, isn’t something anyone is going to want to get behind–much less a Christian woman and her family. Furthermore, Christianity is under full-blown attack; any show that comes out and calls Christian women bitches is not going to gain the favor of Christians. This show isn’t about self-deprecation, or poking gentle fun at intra-church dynamics, or anything else entertainment experts will come up with to justify this garbage. The point of this show is to make Christian women look like judgmental jerks, and “reformed ‘mean girls’” (who are oh-so sexy and oh-so fun and oh-so alluring) look like kicked (sex) kittens.

Rawr.

The pilot for “Good Christian Bitches” hasn’t yet earned a spot in the new ABC lineup. If it does, I’ll watch it, and if I’m wrong about it I’ll take back every word I just said; but considering this is coming from a culture that has vetted shows like “S#*t My Dad Says” and “Don’t Trust the Bitch in Apartment 23,” (again with the bitches…oy) I don’t think I will be.

But then again, maybe I’m just one of those humorless Christian bitches who can’t take a joke.

    These people relish the attention.

or “Good Catholic B**ches”, people would be yelling their heads off about the “sacrilege” of demeaning this religion and calling for ABC to take it off the air.

The current title of the show is “supposedly” just a “working title”, but even at that the implications of it run really deep.

If ABC wants to be this stupid, let them go ahead and do it. Their % of viewers has been sliding downhill for years, and this is just another desperate effort to engage more viewers. But it will come back to bite them in the backside if they follow through with it.

      would :

      1) never happen because of the PC police, and

      2) if it somehow did, would prompt mass threats of beheadings and riots and whatnot

I think it speaks pretty highly of Christians behaving like, ya know, Christians, that people think they can do this.

Given the rights and position that women play in Muslim society, the uproar in the Muslim world could just be a shoulder shrug. Heck, they may object to the word “good”.

This is pathetic. Absolutely none of the women who gossip about people at my church will be watching this tripe. That afterbirth with legs who came up with this concept should invited to enjoy funemployment.

that went to top 10 in certain circles. And that is the original title of the book.

ABC is trying to get a high profile cast signed on to this show

James David Elliot, who I really liked in the series JAG has signed on. There goes that what opinion I had of him down the drain.

I look back on my own misspent young adulthood amongst the circles that would financially support tripe such as that and call it literature. I could, and still can rap that bravo sierra with the best of them. Fortunately for my wife and kids, I made a decision to grow up (kinda-sorta) before I fathered progeny. Part of adulthood involves leaving the Piss-Christ is 1st Rate Art Crowd far behind. Things like Good Christian (Redacteds) remind that simple and stupid are no more synonymous than intellectual and intelligent.

a man, it took me a few times through to understand your point, I might be close to understanding where you are coming from. Thanks for the insight.
So I think we can agree that this will be one of the fastest drops in ABC’s history.
Its tough to read through an Oxymoronic or absurd title like the above. About as tough to hear from a young man who says he went to church all his life and never heard of basic adultery with the eyes.

I am not particularly religous, but was raised Christian and take my kids to church, because I think I owe them some form of spiritual life and exposure to church.

I do feel kind of guilty becasue I think I was disliked by someone in the Sunday School class (who left the class). So I know the judgemental side too. It does not characterize the whole faith.

I think some people really enjoy bashing Christians to the point where it has become a way of insulting someone or devaluing their optinion.

Being Christian is like being a white man. Your opinion means less in our society because you have the flaw of identifying with the Christian faith. No disrespect to white men here, but I think most white men will know where I am coming from with this.

I agree with you…some people really get off on taking it out of Christians. It’s sick.

  • theloneranger

Actually, TV will become irrelevant by 2040.

“Star Trek” said so. (See the episode “The Neutral Zone” for clarification.)

Frankly, though, the way things are going, TV will be pretty much irrelevant by the end of the year.

  • gawken

ABC tried to emulate “The Vicar of Dibley” with Dan Akroyd as a divorced, motorcycle riding Episcopal priest with 4 daughters. The show bombed, as will this one…Once again, it’s the Hollyweird left attempting to reaffirm to themselvess their own world-view..

  • From ME to You

Much less that a good Christian woman wouldn’t refer to any other woman as a ‘bitch’!

    • lineholder

but hopefully as a Christian she has enough depth of character and conviction to resist that temptation.

I’d love to ask the author if she believes writing this book was something that would be pleasing to God for her to do, and if she believes it sets the kind of testimony that God asks it of Christians to strive for, and even if she considered for half a second actually praying about it at any point in time before she had this book published.

      I’m flattered, sir :)

Since when has Hollywood given us any reason to think that they understand anything whatsoever about what makes real-life Christians tick? Anything they make can only be, at best, their lame and totally off-base ideas about what they think Christians might be like — since they tend not to know any Christians personally!

  • stephaniet

And more of my respect for their parent company.

I’m sick and tired of Christians getting dragged through the mud like this. I wonder if there’s anything I can do about it or if I just have to grit my teeth and keep plodding onward. I like to protest, however. Maybe I could try that–relatively politely, anyway.

I hope this show bombs completely out. I really do.

  • lgbpop

I might watch this, if it was called “Stupid Hollywood Bitches” because then I’d know it was truth in advertising. Please wake me up when “Good Muslim Bitches” airs, I want to see that.

    • GregInFla

Because any Muslim “reformed “mean girl? ” would have been stoned before any reformation would occur, according to Sharia.
