Why Rep. Mark Kirk Should Drop Out

We have learned a few lessons from the NY-23 Congressional race about which candidate to support and why.  The establishment candidate turned out to be a female Benedict Arnold.  There are several Congressional races out across our fine land that have the potential to turn into another NY-23, but for the sake of time and expediency, I’d like to highlight just one - the US Senate race in Illinois.

Currently, Rep. Mark Kirk (R-10th IL CD) is the “front runner” on the Republican side.  He’s had his endorsements by John McCain and others like Dede Scozzafava did.  He most likely has access to John McCain’s donor list as well which has enabled Kirk has raised a considerable war chest in his bid to be the next US Senator from Illinois.  Kirk is the media’s darling so he also has the name recognition.

Shortly after the November 2nd filing period, a conservative Republican candidate for US Senate named Dr. Eric Wallace dropped out of the race.  The reasoning behind this move is not only because of a lack of funds to adequately fight a well funded establishment candidate, but also it was not to split the conservative vote.  Dr. Wallace fell on his sword because he knew that conservatives needed to be united around one candidate to defeat Mark Kirk.  Dr. Wallace has also put the Illinois Republican Party and Rep. Mark Kirk on notice that he is entertaining an Independent run should the pro-choice, anti-2nd amendment, pro-Cap and Trade voting Mark Kirk win the Republican nomination for US Senate.

So what conservative candidate is left that can take on Kirk?  The only one left that has some of the funding and backing to do so is Patrick Hughes.  Hughes seems to be the only person that stands between 1) Mark Kirk winning, and 2) a strong Independent run by Dr. Wallace.  The latter point is a problem because any splitting of the Republican vote in Illinois would essentially hand the Democrats their seat.

So how do you know Patrick Hughes is the right candidate and that the Illinois GOP will be split if Kirk wins?

The answer is by talking to people.  I’m a GOP precinct committeeman in Central Illinois and I am also a Tea Party leader.  I travel to various GOP events across the state and I talk with Tea Partiers across the state almost on an every day basis.

First, the GOP.  Republicans in downstate Illinois are tired of their conservative values being thrown aside by Sens. Durbin and Burris and they are tired of Republicans like Judy Baar Topinka and Mark Kirk representing their party but not their conservative values.  They’re tired of the establishment within the Illinois Republican Party, especially former Chairman Andy McKenna, pushing candidates that don’t win, don’t represent their values, and care more about furthering their careers than helping Illinois.  I have personally talked to several, several voting Republicans that stated they WILL NOT vote for Mark Kirk in the primary OR the general election.  When I asked them who they liked, the answer was Dr. Eric Wallace.  Some of these answer are coming from people that have been active in the GOP almost since time was born.  A State Representative in Springfield said recently that if a moderate or liberal is on the GOP ticket, that you can expect about 7% of Republicans to stay home on election day.  I would wager that could be a killer in a non-Presidential election year and that spells trouble for Illinois and the Illinois GOP in November 2010 if Kirk wins the nomination.

Second, the Tea Partiers.  I talk with the Tea Partiers all over Illinois and despite what the mainstream media says, they are fiercely independent - and conservative.  I posed the same question to some Tea Party attendees and they give me the same answer.  “I WILL NOT vote for Mark Kirk in the primary or general election”.  Their first choice was also Dr. Eric Wallace.  In fact, I know that there are several Tea Party groups that will most likely be endorsing a Senate candidate soon - and it won’t be Mark Kirk.  They are VERY concerned about Kirk’s voting record and the answers given to be also spell trouble in November 2010 if Kirk wins the nomination.

A third party bid in Illinois would be disastrous.  It would split the Republican vote and hand the Senate seat to Alexi Giannoulias - Obama’s protege.  This is why Rep. Mark Kirk should drop out now.  The future of Illinois, the Illinois Republican party, and the US Senate filibuster proof composition is at stake.  If Kirk stays in, he will fracture the Illinois GOP, and risk having his own Dede Scozzafava moment as conservatives flock to Dr. Eric Wallace as an Independent.  There is a battle going for the heart and soul of the Republican party.  It’ll either be re-made in John McCain’s image, or it will go back to the Reaganism - as it should.

Anacreon, you are my idea of what a Redstater should be

ColdWarrior Wednesday, November 11th at 1:23PM EST (link)

You are DOING something in the grass roots. You are IN the Party as a precinct committeeman. You are recruiting precinct committeemen, presumeably, where conservatives gather.
Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Cold Warrior,

I am very intrigued by your precinct project. However, I cant seem to find information about precinct committeeman in my state of Maryland. We have party county central committees with about a dozen Republicans per county. I don’t see any info about committeeman and I don’t know who they are. Would you be able to help? Thanks

Anacreon,
Great post. What do you think of Hughes’s chances in the general election?

2010?

I know in Baltimore County, committee members are elected based on Councilmanic district in Gubernatorial election years. I was considering looking into who’s currently representing me and seeing who else may be running / running myself.

Really good

I believe Hughes will do good if given the chance in the general election. I think he represents the changing mood of the electorate since Obama’s inauguration. Many of the issues he stands for are very Reaganesque. These values are what we need if we plan on stopping the spending, increasing debt, government takeovers, and impending tax increases.

Becoming a Precinct Committeeman...

rcov092 Thursday, November 12th at 12:31AM EST (link)

the rules differ drojjm state to state, but you begin by going to your County Central Committee Meetings. They usually occur monthly, check the local website or call the county party to find the date and time.

I startyed going to the Committee meetings and after attending 3 meetings, I was nominated as an alternate. In the meantime, I made myself vlauable by contributing of my time (I have IT skils that proved valuable). Now, just 11 months after starting to attending meetings, I have been nominate dot serve on the Governing Board og the County REC.

Committeman are nominated to fill open slots and elected by the opn membership of the REC unless there is a contest for the seat. In this case, you gather petition signatures (a minimal amount, typically less than 25 and you are placed on the ballot in the regular or primary election.

Committeemen and Committeewomen are critical to taking back the party. They are members of the County Central Committee and vote on all issue sin the County Party. Once you contribute and show your commitment and leadership skills, you will move into more and more influential positions. One of the most important functions you will perform is electing your County State Committeemen and Committeewomen. They represent the county on the State Committee and elect the state representatives to the RNC. There are only 160 some members of the RNC and they control the national organization. Thus control emanates from the bottom up, despite what some would like your to beleive.

Get involved, be respectful of the rules and the process. Make yourself valueable and participate fully. There is a role for you to play in bringing about the re-imposition of conservative values within the party.

I am in Florid so the rules will be different in MD but the process is similar.

What will ‘committee men’ do to change the issue that causes this diary to be written?

Committeemen

dhorowitz3 Wednesday, November 11th at 1:40PM EST (link)

They have influence on local party decisions. If a bunch of “no name” Republicans in a state say that they detest one of the R candidates they will not listen. But if a bunch of party officials get together and oppose them it will put more pressure on the “leadership”

Jim, go to the blog, read the articles, and then you'll know

ColdWarrior Wednesday, November 11th at 4:27PM EST (link)

Go here: http://www.theprecinctproject.wordpress.com

Especially read the article at the link for Nevada. You’ll learn that the grass roots conservatives there realized there that if they invaded the Clark County GOP and became PCs they could create a conservative majority and then nominate new, conservative candidates for all the leadership posts and elect them. And they did it. This year. Clark County is the most populous county in Nevada, encompassing Las Vegas. Watch how the new GOP leadership there impacts those “conservatives” there vying for the chance to face Harry Reid in the general election.

Precinct committeemen are the “backbone” of the Party. They elect the Party leadership at the legislative district level, the county level, the state level and the RNC level. Michael Steele is a reflection of the votes of precinct committeemen at all those levels. I haven’t checked, but I imagine the RNC by-laws state one must be a precinct committeeman to be eligible for the RNC chairmanship.

This is basic civics. Precinct committeemen also can, if they have a majority, vote to endorse candidates in the Republican primary elections. Case in point. Right now, three or four “conservatives” are vying for the chance to run against my congresscritter, Harry Mitchel (Debtocrat, AZ 5). If my legislative district and my county GOP organizations can muster a majority vote in advance of the primary election for one of those three, then that candidate can say, “I’ve got the endorsement of the Maricopa County GOP, I’ve got the endorsements of X number of the GOP Legislative District Committees in Maricopa County.” He can say that in front of every GOP audience. He can put that on his signage and in his campaign mailers. Usually, the Party-endorsed candidate wins.

You are part of all of this if you’re a precinct committeeman. Every state has different rules and requirements. Don’t wait. Find out how to do it in your state asap. Then do it, please.

HALF of the GOP precinct committeeman slots nationwide in 2008 were unfilled. And split 50-50 between moderate/liberals and conservatives. Want a conservative revolution within the GOP? Then get conservatives to flood the GOP and fill up all those vacancies. ASAP.

In Kirk’s case, the local GOP organizations could hold straw polls on the question of whether Kirk should step down as a candidate because he’s a RINO. Assuming the votes were overwhelmingly against Kirk, that might cause him to drop his bid and encourage, perhaps, a conservative businessman to jump into the race.

For example, in Florida, the local GOP committees have been taking straw polls for the Charlie Crist/Marco Rubio contest. Crist has yet to win one, last I heard, and Rubio has won each by a huge margin. This is the kind of thing that might cause Crist to contemplate dropping his bid for the Senate. At least that’s been discussed.

I hope that helps. And that you’ll become a PC.

Thank you.

they can influence primaries and elections. Point of fact, in Florida, everyone thought Charlie Crist would walk into the nomination for Senator. Hed is in trouble because he assumed as much while Marco Rubio was in the county REC meetings campaigning and expressing his values.

The result is that he has beaten Crist in 13 straight “Straw Polls” (held in the County REC’s) and Crist is now fighting for his life in the primary. Committeemen matter.

Coldwarrior,

I and my girlfriend (also a precinct committeewoman) have been able to recruit about 5 so far in our county plus a few others in other counties to hold PC positions.

anacreon, thank you!

ColdWarrior Wednesday, November 11th at 6:24PM EST (link)

Thank you for all your hard work.

Imagine if EVERY conservative PC were able to recruit 5 more conservatives to get involved in party politics as you and your girlfriend have?

Last night I told the PCs at my legislative district meeting that I have this crazy notion that soon in Maricopa County, instead of over two thirds of the PC slots being vacant (as they were in 2008, but that is CHANGING), every PC slot would be a contested race between two great conservatives fighting tooth and toenail (on a friendly basis, of course) for the votes of the voters in their precinct right up to the primary election day.

Keep at it. Keep spreading the word! I believe every conservatives first priority should be to get into the ball game of party politics as a voting member of the Party. If that’s not possible, then in some way support those who are.

Thanks again,
ColdWarrior

The Illinois Republicans are not united.

acat Wednesday, November 11th at 2:30PM EST (link)

Haven’t been for quite a while. Last time they united was to push moderate republican governors and senators into office.

The question is whether Illinoisans are disgusted enough with Democrats to elect an actual conservative. Specifically, will turnout in Chicago and East St. Louis be low enough to let the “collar counties” and mid- and southern-state farm country elect a true conservative?

I’m not getting my hopes up.

(who would love for a better plan than “hold my nose and vote for Kirk” …)

I had not heard of Patrick Hughes before today

David123 Wednesday, November 11th at 2:40PM EST (link)

Now, I’ve started to research Patrick Hughes. At this point I just want a fair primary - I’m sure who ever the winner is will be far superior to the Democratic candidate.

LOL

redtillimdead Wednesday, November 11th at 4:15PM EST (link)

Why would the front runner for the primary and general election drop out?
BTW, if anyone thinks Patrick Hughes will get over 30% in a general election, they are dreaming. You think we are gonna elect another DeMint in Obama’s home state?

Nancy Pelosi can kiss my asstroturf.

Scozzafava is why.

anacreon Wednesday, November 11th at 5:47PM EST (link)

Scozzafava was in front of Hoffman going into the last week or so in NY-23 - and that was without the benefit of a primary. Kirk’s stances and votes on many issues alight with Scozzafava.

Just because it’s Obama’s home state does not mean we have to automatically nominate a liberal or even a moderate as our GOP candidate for Senate or otherwise. I think it is very possible that Hughes could win as long as the IL GOP can stay unified long enough to get the job done. We here in Illinois are soured by the Judy Baar Topinkas and Andy McKennas that have brought the IL GOP to the sad state it is in currently.

If New Jersey shows us anything, the GOP can win on Obama turf. Illinois should not be any different. We have high unemployment, high taxes, jobs are fleeing the state, we have triple the workers comp rate than other states and corruption in government. Not much different than New Jersey. Granted, Hughes is running for Senate, not Governor, but these issues will be in the mind of voter casting his or her ballot for the Senate candidate in November 2010.

Illinois is not NY-23

redtillimdead Wednesday, November 11th at 7:17PM EST (link)

NY-23 is a conservative district. Illinois is not a conservative state. There was no primary in NY-23, and that is why there was a third-party. Plus, DeDe’s lead had been shrinking and the signs of a collapse were there. Mark Kirk is raising good money, unlike DeDe. Patrick Hughes is not. I forget who it was, probably Moe, but maybe Erick, said that the reason RS is not trying to bring down people like Mark Kirk and Mike Castle, is one, electability, and two, these are symbolic victories. We could win the seats of the President and Vice-President from blue states. Mark Kirk may not be down the line conservative, but he’s much better than any Democrap would be in that seat.

Nancy Pelosi can kiss my asstroturf.

I see your point

anacreon Wednesday, November 11th at 8:12PM EST (link)

and it would be symbolic, but what good does it do the Republicans or this country to keep sending people to DC who abandon conservative principles? It’s great if we can take back the Senate seat in Illinois, but what good does it do us if they are like Olympia Snowe, Susan Collins, or John McCain?

The masses are tired of the left or left of center politics of our politicians in Illinois. I wouldn’t count out Hughes quite yet, or if Hughes wins the nomination that he will win. I am on the ground everyday talking to people, some who were Obama voters, and they have done an almost 180 since last November. That turn around can and will be seen come November 2010.

I like your signature by the way.

The problem isnt Kirk or Snowe its red state squishes

Illinicon Wednesday, November 11th at 8:57PM EST (link)

In Illinois, Kirk is the second best we could do (as I think Congressman Roskam who is more conservative and represents a Cook PVI even district could have won next year) and in Maine Collins and Snowe are the again likely the best we could hope for and same with Castle. However, we can do alot better than Alexander, Graham, Hutchison, Martinez/Lemouix, Isakson and Voinoicvich in their respective states. Also the fact that we dont have a single senate seat in Arkansas, Colorado, Montana and Virginia worries me more than the blue states moderates because its quite frankly its them or another version of Dick Durbin or Chris Dodd.

Unfortunately...

vettepilot Thursday, November 12th at 9:46AM EST (link)

The masses around you (and I) in Central Illinois constitute a very different voting block than the masses in and around the state of Chicago. And there are a lot more of their masses than there are of ours in Illinois. Just another reason why we need to get rid of the direct election of Senators…

Also ideologically Kirk is not Dede

Illinicon Wednesday, November 11th at 8:44PM EST (link)

Yes he missed the mark on cap & trade but he is agnaist the auto bailouts, card check, stimulus and socialized health care. He is also strong on national defense and stated in 05 that we should crack down on student visas to students from countries on the State Department terrorist states list and didnt apologize for the remark when the Chicago media got bent out of shape over it. After Fort Hood it is nice to know someone is willing to call a spade a spade. The things we dont agree with him on there is a chance we can convince him he is wrong on, that wont happen if the Mob banker is the state’s Junior Senator.

By the way McKenna is running for Governor.

He claims he is an outsider in Springfield,IL. What a joke!

McKenna must think the people of IL. have political amnesia!

I hope nobody votes for McKenna!

Now as far as Mark Kirk goes he won’t drop out. I believe we ARE Stuck with him as a Republican nominee for U.S. Senate unless Somebody steps up and Starts advertising! Who is going to vote for a silent candidate?

I don’t like Mark Kirk. I won’t vote for him!

Whats really sleazy about McKenna

Illinicon Wednesday, November 11th at 9:10PM EST (link)

is he quit being the state chair to run for Governor after he is breifed as State chair about campaign stratagies of the top various candidates. Its is currently a 7 candidate race and only 2 of the candidates running would be a clear break from Chicago or Springfield corruption. One of them is a solid conservative with little name ID outside GOP circles Adam Andrzejewski and Bob Shillerstrom who is a Rudy type Republican. So neither of them is perfect. What is sad is with the Blagojevich scandal and the other midwestern states (Michigan, Ohio and Wisconsin) having a solid chance of going from blue to red its likely that the IL GOP is going to blow this by likely nominating a combine Republican to face the combine Democrat.
