Our Son Michael Has Gone To Afghanistan

Our son Michael left for Afghanistan yesterday.  His mother wrote the following yesterday as well, and with the news coming out of Afghanistan today, I thought I would repost this here.  Please keep Michael in your prayers.

Today my son Michael leaves for his second tour for Afghanistan, and as I tell him to be careful, he tells me not to worry I’ll be fine mom, it’s only a year.

As I’m trying to absorb what he’s just told me, a lump swells in my throat and I find it extremely difficult not to show my emotions. As I tell him I love him a tear rolls down my cheek in silence, the conversation ends, and I realize protecting my son is now out of my control. He belongs to someone else and now fights a war of peace for our beloved country and others across the world.

Michael is an interrogator for the military and enjoys his job immensely, but says nobody can understand what we go through everyday. He says,’mom it gets so difficult that sometimes you can’t see the next day.’ Michael loves to travel and see the world, so this is just another exciting adventure for him to put next to his long list of endeavors.

Ten years ago Michael, myself, and my best friend (Stephanie Passalaqua) backpacked through Europe to see the historical sights that we had dreamed of visiting for years. We were amazed at what a trooper Michael was at 12 years old. He never complained and due to his love of history was more than willing to make the difficult transactions that took place from one city to the next. I told him, ‘whatever you can stuff in your backpack is all were taking.’ He laughed and I said, “no I’m serious.” This trip changed his life forever because now he travels all over the world. When he was 16 he spent a summer teaching English at the Peruvian University in Lima, at 17 he spent a summer in Germany, and 18 he traveled to France, Austria, and various other countries. His next big trip is planned for China when he gets home next year. He now speaks four languages and wants to be an international corporate lawyer.  I am so proud of him and know that his future will be successful.

To all the mothers who have sons in the military, you have my respect and admiration for allowing them to take part in securing our safety and preserving our freedoms.  I ask everyone for these men and women of our military to be in their prayers daily and so that God may bring them home safe and as soon as possible.

God bless Michael.  God bless our troops.  God bless America.

that WE as Americans have to concentrate on and that is getting someone elected who sees VICTORY where sons and daughters go to fight. OUR troops are dying in large numbers and a complicit media is keeping silent when they browbeat President Bush daily with the causalities. I am grateful that WE have a General who recognizes that VICTORY is a must! I find Obama’s actions on the War in Afghanistan to be beyond the pale. That he or any general thought an ROE of NOT firing back upon being fired on was ever a means of winning is insanity.

I thank you and your wife for raising a AWESOME child who would take it upon himself with others to defend the greatest Country on Earth! I will keep him in my prayers.

Oh my, that is a feeling I remember so well. May God bless you and your family. I don’t think others quite understand the concern and heartbreak that the parents, spouse, children and/or other family members feel at the loss of control over the safety of someone we love so dearly. If love could keep our family members safe, there would be no casualities.

When the Iraq war started and my Marine Son was stop loss two months prior to his discharge, the lump in my throat was huge. As I slept in front of the TV searching for constant news the lump in my throat remained.

I know it must be so difficult for the families who don’t get the constant news that we did after 911 and the invasion of both Afghanistan and Iraq. Just know that there are thousands of families who are praying every day for your loved one(s), and understand the worry you can’t help but feel.

much beloved and very close to his grandmother and I, has orders to Afganistan as well. He is a sailor just recently enlisted and in training to be an aviation hydrolics mechanic. This letter was very helpful in that it reflects our sentiments and stated with the clarity I would find difficult right now.

The recent news out of there concerning the missing sailors caused me much anger and concern. What is going on? When I say that I fear for all of out brave lads fighting in Afganistan and other places for us ilt is not a political statement but a statement about the ineptness of this country’s ability to wage war given all of the nonsense and bad news.

It is very personal for me now. I love my grandson very much.

You have a son you can be truly, unabashedly proud of.

He is a senior NCO who was doing some training. He has some not so pleasant things to say about the current realities and the way the war is being waged, but I am not qualified to relate or even remember everything he said.

    God bless, for your son.

God Bless you for raising a son that wants to sacrifice for this awesome place we call home.
It was the highlight of my life to serve. All the best!!

the soldier at home. The families of those serving are heroes in their own right, in my opinion. They deal daily with uncertainly and terror when the news comes across that US service personnel have been wounded, killed or are missing. We should give them all the support we are capable of for as long as they need it.

And thank God that young people like Michael exist ! What a wonderful young man and what proud parents you must be…..

My father is retired from the USAF and many family members have also served in just about all branches. It is a unique and wonderful life but it can be a difficult one too. Stephanie, I know that it’s not easy for you now but know that a lot of people are with you in spirit. Michael, you and your family are in my prayers. Please thank your son for his service.

God Bless the men and women of the US military home and abroad. The finest military the world has ever known. God Bless their families and God Bless America.

Our youngest was in Afghanistan for most of a year in ’07, but it seems that things were quite different then. His unit literally went looking for “trouble,” doing long patrols into hostile territory trying to draw out the enemy. Things were peaceful enough that they could go shopping in the markets in Kandahar; now it seems we’re trying to re-take Kandahar. He carried a SAW in an infantry squad, so I’m very glad he’s not on active duty or serving this CIC these days. Our prayers will be with you and your son.
