Red State Book Notes: Witness

There has never been a society or a nation without God.  But history is cluttered with the wreckage of nations that became indifferent to God, and died.

Whittaker Chambers, from the preface to Witness

I have been surprised by this book already.  I expected  a narrative of Communism from someone who once believed in Communism.  I expect as we go through the book we will get that in large dose.  I have already seen it in what I have read of Chapter One.  I was not expecting an emotional witness to one mans conversion.  It appears we will also get that in large doses well.

I was very moved by the preface.  I don’t know if it is because I have a six year old daughter and one year old son.  I could identify with Chambers writing to his children and trying to explain his actions.  I write to my own children, but nothing as grand as this.  I felt like much of the preface struck a chord with me and I am interested to see how others view this book.  One particular scene that really resonated with me was when Chambers describes a conversation with an “enlightened” woman:

It was hard for her because, as an enlightened modern girl, she shared the Communist vision without being a Communist.  But she loved her father and the irrationality of his defection embarrassed her.  “He was immensely pro-Soviet,”she said,”and then — you will laugh at me — but you must not laugh at my father — and then — one night — in Moscow– he heard screams.  That’s all.  Simply one night he heard screams.”

..and further on…

She did not know at all that she had swept away the logic of the mind, the logic of history, the logic of politics, the myth of the 20th century, with five annihilating words:  one night he heard screams.

First, this is good (dare I say great?) literature.  The writing really paints a picture.   Secondly, at some level, this passage speaks to our own souls here in the 21st century.  From our other reading in the Book Notes project, I have come believe that Communism is the logical conclusion to state planning, statism, and socialism.  Like a road, these signs are simply markers to tell you how far you have progressed down the road.  The end destination is Communism.

I believe that this book may be the most important book we have read in the project.  That is saying something considering some of the books that have been covered.  It may also be premature as we are just now into chapter one.  However, I am already making a list of the people who will receive a copy of this for Christmas this year.

For Next Week. Complete Chapter One, and have a great week.

dictatorial regime/ideology that seeks to replace the consent of the governed and common sense free markets with top down power with Man as God thinking he can change the nature of man and re-create Eden in man’s image. Rather than accepting the precepts of God as God and natural law.

videos. Google his name & you will be able to access his Utube videos. It will be as informative as any book you will read about the O regime’s agenda. Won’t make your leg tingly, but it will send a chill (or several)down your spine.

I have not yet started into the first chapter, but the preface has caused me, also, to think this may be one of the best books I have ever read. It reminds me a bit of the feeling I had after reading Atlas Shrugs – 20 years after it being first published. Now, I am reading a book 50 years after it was first published.

Ever time I think I’m making a step forward, I realize just how far behind I am and how important it is to share this information with as many people as possible.

The main reason this is important to me is that I was not taught history when I was in school – my teachers taught history by way of memorizing dates and batltles, without historical context., which is the reason I hated history when I was in school (including college). That caused me to be completely ignorant of history.

I look forward to Chapter 1.

Forward as a letter to his Children. Those 26 pages were fundamental to my conservative epiphany in 2000 and to Reagan in the 1950s. Bravo ‘klon and ‘d!

    more later

while reading this. Atlas Shrugged was incredible literature. This is more impressive to me so far because it is fact. Rand predicted the future, Chambers may have lived it.

One man’s journey into darkness and the climb back into the light.

The darkness is shocking. I have not read anything quite like it. If it had wider currency today, there would be many more *former* statists.

Thanks for including the five unforgettable words.

I wasn’t sure of the path the book would take, but I am fast coming to the conclusion, that if there is any book one reads regarding the events of the 20th century, politics and society, this is the one it should be.

As already noted, it isn’t just about Chambers renouncing Communism, but it is also about his faith journey. I have been spellbound by his understanding of Communism and his explanations are straight forward. Simply put, Communism is about the mind of man and his belief that he is everything, and that there is no spiritual domain. It is all about the intellect for Communism, they have made man, their god.

Ultimately, Communism is the choice between God or man.

Now I understand more clearly what Vassar said in one of his posts, that a Communist is an atheist, and they cannot be a Communist and proclaim having faith at the same time. Communism and a faith belief in God is mutually exclusive, and Chambers gives outstanding explanations as to why. This is a book one cannot put down.

As I suggested in another post, you should really read the Balint Vazsonyi book Americas’s 30 Year War….it goes into detail in much the same with his own background in Hungary. He outlines how socialism is only the conduit by which communism is achieved. It is bitterly eye opening.

After reading last night about 70-82 of our House and Senate members openly being linked to the Democratic Socialist, it is very sobering. In 2001-2003 the then members who were also card carrying members of the DSA scrubbed their names from the roles and the internet site, but not before screen shots were cached and saved. That they are back again shows they don’t care (again) who knows. They might as well just change the log from an ass to a hammer and sickle under a minaret and call it a day.

have the Obama playbook in hand.

Many, many parallels exist between the actions of Whitt and what I see taking place in this administration. The only difference between then and now is that many members are card carrying members of DSA, CI, CPUSA or some other such organizations.

    Scary.

much as the book is one the greatest non-fiction literary achievements. More importantly, it is one of the best refutations of the Marxist economic view of history and one of the greatest testimonies for the Christian and faith choice view of same. The serpent’s choice for man to “be as God’s” is at the heart of the problem with the human condition, not capital v labor.

you should read Operation Solo about Morris Childs. The guy is probably the most unsung hero for freedom in the 20th century. He was so deep under cover that all of the communists at his funeral were shocked when the FBI showed up to say what a great man he was.

He was probably the most successful double agent in the history of the world.

He had a heart attack before he even started working for the FBI.

Everyone in the Kremlin knew him by name, and sough out his counsel.

Yet his name is rarely if ever mentioned here.

Chambers and Childs would have understood each other very well. Too bad they couldn’t congregate like Tolkien and CS Lewis at a pub and just talk.
