Book Notes: The Conclusion of Witness

This has been an incredible book, and I think it will stay with me for a long time to come.  I was amazed at how much this book was a testimony to Chambers faith.  I expected an  inside look into Communism in the United States.  I didn’t expect a description of Chambers conversion from Communism to Christianity.

I think there are two messages that we should take from this book.  The first is that Communism isn’t the opposite of Capitalism.  Communism is the opposite of Christianity.  Christianity believes that man is made in God’s image.  We are required to treat one another as we want ourselves to be treated.  We, as Christians are required to follow the Commandments.  Communists are not only free of these requirements, they look at them as a weakness. Communists believe that men are simply another form of beast.   As such, there is no higher order they have to respect.  Any action, any betrayal, any lie is OK, provided it helps or protects Communism.

The other lesson is to remember just how far inside our own government communism had penetrated.  Alger Hiss was instrumental in the United States involvement at both the Treaty of Yalta and the formation of the United Nations.  With the collapse of the Soviet Union, and a resurgence of Russia, it’s hard to know how far Communism may have penetrated our current government.  However there can be no denying that communists “fellow travelers”  of socialism, Marxism, and statism are deep in our government.  The current administration and the current Congress have used these as their guiding principles for the last two years.

For Next Week: Let’s start Mere Christianity by C. S. Lewis.  I plan on covering through the end of Book 2, Chapter 2 “The Invasion”.  For those of you keeping up with the reading, do you want to have an assignment for Christmas week or not?

I’m ready with Mere Christianity, though I do vote for Christmas week off.

You pretty well summed it up. This book was excellent. Like you, I think the infiltration of the Communists into all levels of the Federal government, had lasting harm. One from which we have never recovered and the unfortunate results of that infiltration are with us today.

Here’s another difference between communism & judeo-christian values. The morality in the Bible provides a firm foundation for the People’s representatives to enact moral laws. God is respected. The Bible’s lessons & wisdom was achieved in the crucible of conflict, have been handed down for thousands of years, generation to generation, and represent the accumulated wisdom of the Ages. And the current generation is taught all the lessons.

Communism tosses all that out. There is no God. The past is not to be learned, it is held in contempt, something to be changed, lied about, if it suits the party or the State. And guess what, what is “moral” or “immoral” is not firmly rooted in ancient texts, e.g., the Bible, it is a) whatever the dictator thinks is moral (that didn’t work to well for Chavez’ subjects), b) whatever the oligarchy votes to be moral today, or c) whatever the nominal parliament says is moral (nominal because there is no private propety under communism — so no representative will likely have the means, cash or property, to sustain himself, and so won’t be able to exercise his independence & stand up to the parliament or the ruling clique).

With respect to Witness, I think that Whittaker Chambers hits a chord of truth with his statement: Communism was a direct competitor with Christianity. You’ll note that many of its functions and peculiarities (hero worship, propaganda, anti-religiousity) had nothing to do with economics, and everything to do with setting up an alternative to Christianity and religion in general, complete with its own roster of saints, eschatology, articles of faith, and other features endemic to religion. So it will always be with the Total State, as a state of such massive size and scope cannot avoid making the mistake of hubris that was made by humanity when the Tower of Babel toppled.

it very much agrees with that proposition. The book is about the big picture conflict betwee the Roman Catholic Church and Soviety Communism.
