Book Notes: Final Thoughts on Mere Christianity
By: andyd (Diary) | January 30th at 10:14 AM |
In this weeks reading we finished Mere Christianity. I think the book met my expectations for a great introduction to Christianity. I think Lewis makes some very compelling arguments for a belief in both a god, and the Christian God. In this final reading, I found a section in Chapter 9 very interesting. Lewis discusses the “cost” of following Christianity. In this case, Lewis argues | Read More »
Book Notes: Why Theology?
By: andyd (Diary) | January 23rd at 07:52 PM |
Lewis covers a lot of material in this week’s reading. I thought he gave a great explanation of why we should study theology. I don’t think Lewis meant studying theology as in a college course. I think he was meaning study at church, or like the discussions we have had here at Red State. There were two specific points I wanted to look at. The | Read More »
Book Notes: The Importance of Every Decision
By: andyd (Diary) | January 16th at 08:44 PM |
Last week, I wasn’t able to put an entry in here for the reading due to illness. It looks like I wasn’t the only one sick, so I am going to cover pages 88 through 133 this week. There are actually a number of points in this weeks reading that are worth discussion. But as I looked back over the chapters, there was one section | Read More »
Book Notes: Mere Christianity Part Three
By: andyd (Diary) | January 10th at 11:48 AM |
Back when Eric started this project, he gave one rule that I haven’t used since the beginning of the Book Notes project. Each weeks’ book notes entry would.. …not be a “book review”, but rather our candid thoughts on the chapter, up to and including “the baby was sick all week and I didn’t get a chance to read it.” I hate to say it, | Read More »
Book Notes: How to Approach Christianity
By: andyd (Diary) | January 2nd at 02:46 PM |
Our last reading introduced us to some pretty compelling reasons as to why a god must exist. This weeks reading makes the argument that this god is the Christian God, and lays out some of the expectations God has for us. I want to spend my time this week covering something Lewis says that I personally struggle with: how to approach Christianity and obedience to | Read More »
Book Notes: Mere Christianity
By: andyd (Diary) | December 19th at 01:44 PM |
On the back of my copy of Mere Christianity, the publisher describes it as “One of the most popular introductions to Christian faith ever written..” So far, I think this has been an entirely accurate description. In the assignment this week, C. S. Lewis walks us step by step up to a faith in some god, though not necessarily the Christian God. He arrives at | Read More »
Book Notes: The Conclusion of Witness
By: andyd (Diary) | December 12th at 07:43 PM |
This has been an incredible book, and I think it will stay with me for a long time to come. I was amazed at how much this book was a testimony to Chambers faith. I expected an inside look into Communism in the United States. I didn’t expect a description of Chambers conversion from Communism to Christianity. I think there are two messages that we | Read More »
Book Notes: “The Lesson” from Witness
By: andyd (Diary) | December 5th at 07:34 PM |
With 50 pages left in Witness, it may be a little premature to claim to know the one lesson we should learn from this book. There are a number of incredible themes and lessons from this book I will take with me. However, during this week’s reading, I found what I think should be the lesson we take from this book as part of the | Read More »
Book Notes: Chambers Witness of Faith
By: andyd (Diary) | November 28th at 09:34 PM |
I want to focus in on Chapter 12 this week. I was really impressed by what Chambers says in this section about himself and his faith. I also highlighted most of this section in my own copy, so I thought it was only appropriate to use it for my writing this week. After the August 25th testimony, Chambers writes: By then, I began to grasp | Read More »
Booknotes: Witness and the Press
By: andyd (Diary) | November 21st at 03:55 PM |
In this weeks reading, I felt there were two really interesting sections that talked about the role of the press in the Hiss Case. I also thought these were important because we still see the press doing the same thing in today’s world. The first example occurs very early in this section. During the August 25th hearing Hiss was able to read ten questions into | Read More »
