Last night, more than 700 conservatives gathered in New York and heard Sean Hannity endorse Wendy Long in the New York Republican primary for United States Senate on June 26th.

Long will be on Hannity’s radio show today.

Why the Republican Party has created a primary against one of the most attractive candidates to come around in a long time is an an open question. But it is a fact that the leadership of New York’s Republican Party interceded to create a primary and this week broke its own rules about remaining neutral in a primary.

Everyone, from liberal reporters to conservative voters, who have seen or heard Long agree she is a dynamic candidate. She will give incumbent Democrat Kirstin Gillibrand a run for her money. Long has been endorsed by John Bolton (who, after meeting her, broke his rule of not endorsing in primaries), the American Conservative Union, Americans for Tax Reform, and The New York State Conservative Party. She has also won local endorsements up and down New York State.

On Tuesday, June 26th, New York Republicans have an opportunity to select a conservative Republican who will make them proud and help all Republican and Conservative candidates in New York running in November.

In addition to voting for her, you can help this candidacy by donating to her campaign. Her web-site is here.

This week end saw British and French conservative candidates go down to embarrassing defeats. In both instances, if the main parties had held on to conservative base voters they would have won by comfortable margins. Smaller, more ideological parties siphoned crucial votes away from Cameron and Sarkozy. In the weeks, before the run-off vote Sarkozy desperately tried to win back conservative voters he had ignored during his term in office. This last ditch effort came up short.

In England, the Tories lost local elections throughout the country including in a slew of traditional Conservative constituencies. The only significant Tory victory came in London’s race for Mayor. The incumbent, Boris Johnson beat the far left former Mayor Ken Livingstone. Commenting on his victory Johnson said he had survived even though he had received the endorsement of Prime Minister Cameron. This slap in the face was not appreciated in Number 10 Downing Street.

In the response to this debacle, Conservative ministers called for a return to conservative principles.

One might say that these votes were a classic throw out the bums reaction, but the London Mayoralty did show an incumbent can win in tough economic times.

A more important lesson to be learned is that conservative voters can not be taken for granted. Turn your back on them enough times and they will abandon you on Election Day.

American Action Network has ended its campaign in support of liberal Senator Dick Lugar. But it is spending conservative dollars to demonize Mourdock.

Mourdock has earned the support of Steve Forbes, The NRA, The Club For Growth, and the American Conservative union.

Lugar has earned the title, Obama’s Favorite Republican. As the senior Republican on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee he has legitimized Obama’s United Nation’s centered foreign policy and on numerous occasions he has backed Obama on domestic issues as well. Couple this record with his age and you would think even the Republican establishment would understand it is time for him to be retired.

But that is not the case. Cantor’s involvement is indefensible. The Young Guns program was established to elect new Republicans to the House. No donor supported the program to back an ancient (he is 84 years old) liberal Senator who should never have run for re-election.

First impressions often linger on forever. When retired businessman Bob Turner defeated a Democrat in the Special election to succeed the disgraced Anthony Weiner, Bob became an instant political celebrity. Bob’s victory showed that Jewish Democrats could be convinced to vote for a Republican candidate under certain circumstances.

Leaders of the New York State Conservative Party earned the right to lead in this celebration. In both his congressional elections, (Turner had run and lost to Anthony Weiner in 2010) the Conservative Party backed and played a crucial role in Bob’s campaigns. In fact, when the Republicans threatened to open the nominating process in the Special Election the Conservatives made it clear that they would only back Bob Turner. And Bob’s margin of victory came on the votes he received on the Conservative Party line.

Then during the congressional redistricting process the Conservative Party made Bob’s district a top priority.

Not satisfied with the lines of his new congressional district, Bob Turner decided not to try to retain his congressional district. But instead of riding off into the sunset, a week before the Republican Nominating Convention for United States Senate, Bob declared his candidacy against Senator Kirstin Gillibrand. Bob’s surprise candidacy is backed by the same Republican leadership that considered denying him the nomination in the Special Election. It also pits Bob against the conservative candidacy of Wendy Long.

At the Republican Convention, Wendy (without Republican establishment support) won 47% of the vote while Bob got the minimum 25%. Enough to create a statewide Republican primary. A few days later, the Conservative Party backed Wendy Long with over 90% of the vote at their convention.

Bob’s decision to challenge Long has pitted him against many of the conservatives who have been his loyal supporters. His last minute candidacy came about with out consultation with his staunchest supporters. His best case scenario (which is unlikely) would have him winning a Republican Party which would split the Republican-Conservative coalition which is the only hope in beating Gillibrand.

Meanwhile, the Left has trained its guns on Long’s candidacy. They know she is a dynamic threat to Gillibrand. Daily Kos has trained its unhinged fire on her because they know she poses the greatest threat to the unimpressive Gillibrand.

On the national level, The Susan B. Anthony list and Laura Ingraham have strongly endorsed Wendy Long. Over the years, Wendy has been an effective advocate for pro-life and pro-family causes.

Frankly, Bob Turner is doing a disservice to the chances of defeating Gillibrand and to the conservative cause with his quixotic crusade. He is forcing a primary that is deflecting resources away from exposing Gillibrand’s mindless advocacy of Obama’s agenda. If he hoped to scare Wendy Long out of the race he has failed. She continues her vigorous campaign against the liberal Gillibrand.

You can help support her campaign here.

Yesterday, 91% of the New York State Conservative State Committee voted to endorse Wendy Long to challenge Democrat Senator Kirstin Gillibrand. A motion to make her the unanimous choice of the convention was adopted.

In less than two months Wendy Long has demonstrated she presents a very formidable challenge to the very liberal Gillibrand. Mrs. Long a first time candidate is a natural campaigner. She has visited Republicans and Conservatives throughout New York State and she has won support without any help from Republican State headquarters. This notoriously hapless organization seems intent on challenging Long’s candidacy. While she won 47% of the vote at the Republican convention the powers that be threw 25% of the vote to Congressman Bob Turner a very late entry. This has created a primary which includes a third candidate George Maragos.

Ideologically, Long is the most conservative. She worked for Senators Gordon Humphrey and Bill Armstrong and she clerked for Justice Clarence Thomas. She is a leading conservative legal authority who has volunteered to recruit strict constructionist judges to the Federal judiciary. She is a stalwart of the Federalist Society.

Turner who entered the race when it became clear that he could not win his congressional seat openly admits Long is an attractive and conservative candidate but insists on running. This has created some angst among conservatives and Republicans who supported him in his upset victory in the Special Election for Anthony Weiner’s seat. This became evident when he received a mere 4% of the vote at the Conservative Party convention. Some conservatives have counseled Turner to end his campaign because all he is doing is distracting attention away from Gillibrand. If he persists his image as a conservative will suffer. Turner is a critic of the Ryan budget and he voted to ban the sale of guns across state lines.

But neither the Turner or the Maragos challenges are likely to stop the Long campaign. She is a fresh face and has a natural talent to articulate her conservative principles with a smile and a non-threatening manner.

You can watch her acceptance speech at the Conservative convention here.

In today’s New York Post, Marlin clearly and succinctly lays out an action plan for New York to implement in light of the financial meltdown.

Marlin brilliantly instructs the politicians who are obviously in over their heads. He wastes no time identifying people to blame, instead he states the problem and tells the politicos they must drastically reduce state spending and reduce taxes. He emphasizes that New York must take action simply to stay competitive as a world financial center.

If McCain followed Marlin’s intelligent and straightforward example Americans would listen and respond positively. The first politician who puts politics aside and really deals with the financial problems facing every citizen will win the day politically.

Did you ever wonder why John McCain is not way ahead of a radical like Barak Obama in a country where a majority of voters describe themselves as right of center?

The answer is that McCain keeps slapping conservatives in the face.

He knows that on issues like immigration, his partnership with Teddy Kennedy, McCain-Feingold, etc. he has serious problems with his base but instead of reducing these concerns about him he continues to make the best possible case that he is not a conservative.

Check out his convention’s speakers list.

At most he has included 4 conservatives and left scores of conservatives off the agenda. Where are Mike Pence, Eric Cantor, Paul Ryan, Tom Coborn, Jim Demint, Jon Kyl, ….. They are the most attractive faces of the Party but they are no where to be found.

If he does not pick a real conservative like Cantor for VPhis chances of rallying a majority of voters may go out the window. Remember George Bush lost the popular vote in 2000 by going against his base (less vigorously than McCain is.)

Millions of New Yorkers voted for the Term Limits law, and now Bloomberg who calls himself a term limit supporter who would defend the law has indicated he would support the City Council subverting the law without giving the people a chance to vote.

Bloomberg is not looking for a popular vote because poll after poll shows overwhelming support for maintaining the current Law among voters.

This past weekend anyone interested in news about the the Presidential campaign probably came across a story or two about Congressman Eric Cantor emerging as a lead prospect to becoming John McCain’s choice for a running mate.

Today, this story continues to spread. The New York Times reports that the Democrat National Committee has launched a web-site attacking potential Republican VP choices and Cantor makes the front page. While the Wall Street Journalgives the Cantor story quite a bit of digital ink.

The political question worth pondering is how did a relatively unknown conservative Congressman from Virgina become a prime contender for Vice President. He’s getting more ink than Romney and other better known Republican contenders. How has he gotten to this point?

Inside the Beltway, Cantor is rightfully seen as a future conservative leader. He holds a leadership position in the House, he is articulate, energetic, and young.

In the past few weeks he has made the most of his opportunities to lead attacks on Obama’s overseas trip and his anemic energy policies. But this still does not answer the question of why he is now being taken seriously by the McCain team.

One interesting observation that is being mentioned in the press is that an internet based grassroots movement supporting Cantor has been using many of the internet resources that Obama used to build a campaign. There are reports that Cantor for VP web-site has been hopping as more and more people want to learn about him and to sign up as supporters. Look at the members at the Cantor for VP Facebook page and you will see a geographically diverse band of supporters.

This independent campaign for Cantor seems to me to be the first attempt at a grassroots Republican movement in the national election. Who said the Right can’t be effective on the web?

Tonight, The Jim Lehrer Report on PBS broadcast a segment on the serious health challenges all the Olympic athletes are facing in mega-polluted Beijing.

One athlete who had competed in Beijing last year recounted how he and other world class bicyclists became violently ill during a race. The World Champion marathoner was advised to run a shorter course because he was risking his life by running in the polluted environment.

Several scientists and doctors who have worked for the Chinese testified that China’s attempts at lowering pollution levels by reducing the number of cars and reducing factory operations have had no impact. They explained that Beijing is situated in between two mountain ranges which makes it an accumulator of pollution from afar.

To reduce exposure to the dangerous pollution, American athletes are warming up hundreds of miles from Beijing in places as far away as South Korea. They will show up in Beijing to register and on the day of their events.

One wonders why the Olympic Committee did not make the health of Olympic athletes a primary concern when they selected Beijing. The same question can be asked of the United States Olympic Committee.

This health risk and the internet censorship should be covered in depth by NBC News. Does anyone think it will be? What about the rest of the Main Stream Media?
