A community organizer to be proud of

Here is a young man involved in community activities that the entire nation can be proud of.

Darryl W. Finkton, a senior at Harvard College and once one of the best high school basketball players in metropolitan Indianapolis, was named this month as one of the current year’s class of Rhodes scholars.

His community service:

He directed and

co-founded a sustainable water delivery system for a community in Ghana, and has done

neuroimagery research in infant cognition in a French medical laboratory.

As the Indianpolis Star described him:

In 2006, Finkton, the son of Stephanie Finkton, said he wanted to become a pediatric cardiologist. In a 2005 interview with The Star while still a student at North Central, Finkton said, “When I’m on the basketball court, I’m a basketball player. When I’m in class, I’m a student”

He was considered one of the best high school basketball players in the Indianapolis area, receiving an honorable mention on The Star’s 2006 All-Marion County boys team and honorable mention on the Topics Newspapers team. Finkton played on the Harvard team for two years before suffering a knee injury.

At Harvard, he is a neurobiology major and a minor in African American studies.  At Oxford, he plans to complete a master’s in global health science.

I suspect — and hope — that we are going to be hearing a good deal more about him.

because those who are so innately intelligent LOSE all ability to allow common sense to enter their sphere of thought. I would love if schools allowed INDIVIDUAL thought and the best and brightest were more open to Conservative thought however once they engage with the leftists in colleges they can no longer see the human cost to their high minded ideals.

Pls see my comment re Mitch Daniels.

If I were Mitch Daniels, the wildly popular governor of Indiana, and a successful Republican, I would invite this young product of the state to lunch at the governor’s mansion, congratulate him on the accomplishments, and invest an hour or so of time in discussing the attraction of conservative values.

Who could ever criticise the invitation? Finkton is the son we all hope to have. He makes the city of Indianapolis, the state of Indiana, and all of us proud.

Besides, they have areas of mutual interest:

Governor Daniels came from a successful career in business and government, holding numerous top management positions in both the private and public sectors. His work as CEO of the Hudson Institute and President of Eli Lilly and Company’s North American Pharmaceutical Operations taught him the business skills he brought to state government. He also has served as Chief of Staff to Senator Richard Lugar, Senior Advisor to President Ronald Reagan and Director of the Office of Management and Budget under President George W. Bush.
