Moral Relativism and the Shrinking Conservative Base


This essay is a continuance of some of my comments. The point is straight forward. The true conservative base is shrinking. My opinion is based on a number of things. One being a political pollster (name unknown) who stated the demographics favor democratic voters. I see some of this evidence first hand. In my home state of California, the population growth appears to be largely Hispanic. Hispanics are mainly democratic voters. The conservative Cubans in Florida are not growing at the same rate as the Latin traditional democratic supporters. The younger white population is not embracing the traditonal values of the past. One poster countered me here by showing that polls indicate the majority are pro-life and against gay marriage. This is true. But all that poll represents is that the trend of voters in this the demographic don’t vote these issues. My neice and her husband, both white and in their twenties, voted for Obama. They are both conservative tradtional people in their personal lives. They go to church he is a Captain in the Marine Corps.  My neice was raised Catholic. Whether it is through immgration or the younger voting population or both, this trend shows a tilt toward progressive liberal candidates. Another contributing factor is education.

The public schools and universties have turned into socio-political indoctrination centers. Political correctness is the theme in everything. Todays history books minimize the positive image of our founding fathers and heritage. California passed legislation about two years ago to reprint all school text books which would  depict homosexual characters in our history. One citizen wrote in our local paper that highschool history books now depict D-Day as the day the “UN forces” invaded France. Of course any free expression of Christianity is discouraged or out right suppressed. This is to ensure that American children will not learn that Judeo Christian values were the foundation of our nation. There is even an active effort to undermine parental influence on their children by counteracting it with what I have described above. I will not go into the obvious hostile liberal environment on our college campuses. What this all adds up to is a progressive influence that dominates the cultural landscape, and I believe it is having a negative impact on the conservative base. 

I believe this means conservatives could be losing political power in elections. The chances our we will have fewer conservative candidates. I am not happy about this. This has caused me to reflect on my importance  as a father in providing a positive influence on my daughter’s education and values. One thing I do want to state clearly here is that compromising principles is a dead end and will not lead to the desired result. Cal Thomas said it best. “You can’t have trickle down morality. You can have bubble up morality.” Very simply put, the leaders are only a reflection of the people. What values are the population trend really supporting? Probably moral relativism. Which is why it is getting harder to have a Mike Huckabee as a presidential candidate.

it almost looked more like he wsa saying Mike didn’t have a chance. I’m just disturbed that he also seems to think Mike’s a Conservative.

How do you define conservative? He lost out to the moderate McCain. Why he lost is debateable, but I think that Huckabee would have appointed constructionist judges as opposed to liberal activists don’t ya think?

I won’t argue that you will find left wing people that go to church. What I will argue is that the moral base who do not separate their personal lives from what they hope for in society is shrinking. It’s a self evident fact. I can’t separate my conscience from the voting booth or what i want from my government. Too many people can which is why Obama won the election.

but I believe his views are smaller government and traditional social values supported by a constructionist judiciary. I could not categorize Huckabee as a liberal. I was not trying to advocate him as the candidate, but an example of a conservative candidate.

integrating into the conservative platform than moral relativism and its impact on conservative voters. I still stand by Huckabee. Are you going to tell me that he advocated higher taxes and spending like liberal democrtats? True I am not aware of what he did as governor, but I am aware that his reputation was not like moderate McCain. The man was a former Baptist minister. They are not known for liberal views.

But more to the point, what is yours? There’s an interesting anecdote you tell about your niece and her husband voting for Obama — as well as the particularly frightening little tidbit about highschool textbooks crediting the “UN” for D-day (even though the UN didn’t exist, as such).

But we KNOW there’s a culture war. that’s not really in question. What IS in question is, what do we DO about it?

what do you suggest? I wrote it as analysis of the problem I admit solutions are difficult. And excuse me the culture war is the point when you are talking about political power. The only anecdote I can offer is DON’T COMPROMISE. Our party must regain its identity away from secular humanism.

At this point, it's hard enough getting our party to regain its identity as a separate entity from the Dems.

I’d be fine with a candidate who agreed that certain “cultural” issues are best left with the states. You don’t change peoples’ hearts and minds re: morality through politics. That very attempt has crippled us in the recent past.

Voters completely missed the real cause of the mortgage crisis. The polls showed that most Americans believe Obama was the best candidate for the poor economy. All this in spite of the history of failed socialism. This is what is discouraging. It’s like don’t you get it dummy?

You have outlined the problem very well. So now, how are you going to fix it?

And for the record, I think the “True Conservative” stuff is a red herring. It’s a contest that no one can win (except Fred).

Socialism doesn’t work. It looks nice on paper, but it’s been tried and it’s failed miserably every time (usually accompanied by widespread death and suffering).

A Moral and Religious People

Our law does not come from our government. We hold that our law comes from God. For if we do not accept God as the higher authority, then we must accept that our law comes from whoever is in power. Hence moral relativism and the secular humanist movement.

The demographic trends discussed here have been around for a long time, at least since the eighties. We still elected at least a nominally conservative Presidentfor 8 years and congress for 14. The reason the Deomocrats have been dominating elections since 2006 is because Bush thought it was “beneath the office of the President” to defend himself from political attacks. This is why he was demonized so successfully. If Bush had been a bit more competent and willing to stick up for himself there would be no President Barack Obama right now, and probably no Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Majority Leader Harry Ried.

Unfortunately, you are very correct about our children being indoctrinated with collectivist thinking. But, many of these children are also rebelling against the basic tenets of identity politics and sheepism that the left has so deftly pushed. Many Americans are beginning to wake up and smell the corruption that is endemic whenever this kind of cash is thrown around. Also, Pelosi’s perfidy is so readily apparent even liberals are embarrassed by her. They may defend her tepidly, but they know she’s a bold-faced liar. Furthermore, they are also beginning to grow weary of the sight of his face. The fit of pique at the GOP is fading fast as they begin to realize what a terrible choice them made handing all power to these fools. The country is just beginning to awaken from the cold, long winter of denial.

I appreciate the feedback from everyone here and will consider your ideas in any future posts. It is hard to hit all points. This election felt different to me because so many people that I know voted Obama. Writing helps calm my consternation.
