We need all the help we can get: A plea for a ‘kinder and gentler’ RedState

Last year, Barack Obama’s campaign brought literally millions into the political arena that were never activated before. Now, his disastrous policies are bringing millions of conservative-minded folks into the world of political activism that were never inclined to do so. This is a great thing!!! I would guess that there are literally thousands who have discovered RedState in the last 6-9 months (heck, I only joined officially a little over 9 months ago myself). There are probably many more readers than those who have actually registered and commented/posted. There are probably an increasing number who show up for the first time each day to just read the posts. This is a great opportunity to educate folks and to inspire them into action.

However, many of them are not as “educated” in conservative doctrine as are many regular RedState posters. Like many of the folks Obama brought into the process, many of our newbies know only how they “feel” about certain issues or people. Many of these folks have gotten active because they fell in love with Sarah Palin. Many of them just have a gut-level distaste for Barack Obama, making them more inclined to believe the birth certificate conspiracy arguments. (I mention these two issues primarily because they have been the biggest controversial topics of late. There are any number of other issues that will crop up that will be similar emotional catalysts.)

If we want our conservative arguments to prevail, we need a big army! In this army will be officers and enlisted folks, planners and fighters, charge-leaders and back-room dealers. There is a need and room for many. And there will be many disagreements, some of which we’ve already seen. We must be careful not to alienate or chase away these new folks!!!!! Let me make this clear, I am 100% in favor of factual arguments. You think Sarah Palin has made mistakes or is finished with electoral politics, fine. Make that argument. You think she’s great, make that argument. You think Obama’s not eligible to be POTUS, fine, make that argument. You think the whole birth certificate issue has nowhere to go, great. Make that argument. (Full disclosure: I remain a huge Sarah Palin fan; and I believe that Obama was born in Hawaii.)

But RedState should not be an elitist site!! We want a big army, we need a big army. If we call Palin fans, especially those who are new and whose opinions are still largely “feelings-based”, names (e.g. Palinbots) and ridicule them, they will leave our site (and likely political activism) for good. If we make fun of the folks who genuinely believe that Obama has not proven his eligibility (and believe me, I’ve met a good number of them, and they are a completely different, and more normal, group than the Paulites) and make cracks about “tinfoil hats”, we will lose them as well. And believe me, every person who leaves RedState feeling put down or unwelcome will let their like-minded friends know how they were treated or how welcoming our site is.

So please, Redstaters, let’s keep the conversation at this site thoughtful, incisive, witty, and fun. But please dispense with any third-grade name-calling. If I want that, I will go read HuffPo or some other such site.

Ta-ta for now, and see many of you in Atlanta!

I think this site is not for Palinistas.

Rod_Patrick (Diary) Sunday, July 26th at 6:06AM EST (link)

No plea will ever give you satisfaction on whatever you’re aiming at in this diary.

Fair or no fair, it shouldn’t matter though. You are still free to find Palin news or promote Palin in other sites, right?

In my case, if I need my dose of fresh Palin news, I go to Conservatives4Palin or Texas4Palin.

Not Here. Palin is already dubbed here by some regulars as SWMNBN. Do we have to be angry at them? No. They have their own reasons (or possibly, even their own candidates in mind) too.

To be fair:

RS Directors have never said anything UNFAIR against Palin … YET. That’s a good sign, don’t you think?

Rod, I can see both points of view.

penguin2 (Diary) Sunday, July 26th at 7:46AM EST (link)

Azaeroprof is quite right, there are many new people here, especially since the election. Ones who comment as well as countless who are just reading. I started reading last summer, joined late Jan.

There are a lot of feelings involved. All related to the devastating losses we sustained in election 2008. The gut wrenching fear that many of us have felt because of the presidency of Obama only compounds the issue. This stems from the fact we are feeling helpless and powerless. Each person, in their own way is struggling to come to terms with all things leftist Dems. IMO, this is why there are heightened responses.

Sarah, at least for the time being, represented another huge “loss” to many on our side. And people are going through all kinds of angst about it. Anything that is seen to hurt the conservative movement at this time, has the ability to cause us to feel pain and stress to a greater degree. Full disclosure, I love Sarah, and I think she has more to come and I am going to trust in her. In the meantime, I can go forth and work on all of the things important to me which she herself seemed to value.

About the birth certificate, I said yesterday, I think it can be used ultimately in the bigger picture of credibility with him, but it is not going to change anything right now.

Since being here, I’ve seen it can be rough, but it is also one of the most dynamic, informative and affirming sites I know. Healthy discussion is good, and I think people are just trying to nudge people into the most productive use of resources. And I am talking about more than money-time and energy count too. Also, only seeing everything about an issue or individual as painted positive can be harmful. We need to know the cons as well as the pros. How else can we adjust and grow and help a candidate or our cause?

Name calling is never good unless their is humor and affection. But I have also seen stubbornness from both sides in any argument and they can become passionate. Please be fair to the Directors, that was the only thing that bothered me when you said “yet” re. Sarah. They’re not like that. In fact, I think they let us run on our own, finding our way as possible.

And Rod, I still remember one of my very first comments here, I was expressing feeling bad and scared about the future because of Obama and you responded, naming a couple of others and yourself, “it was a plague” that response stayed with me and helped give support to get going and get past the fear. Thank you.

I generally agree, penguin2.

Rod_Patrick (Diary) Sunday, July 26th at 8:55AM EST (link)

But I did not make myself clear in my first post. I think RS has been taking the higher road of discussing and analyzing greater “philosophical” issues relevant to what is going on out there.

And I support that.

We can leave identity/politician-specific issues in other sites. But make no mistake. I will be the first one to raise my opposition to any diary or comment that involves unfair or ill-motivated bashing of conservatives and republicans including Palin. RS can best serve its purpose if it does not engage in the promotion of any specific Presidentiables at this early. And I believe that it’s a good thing. Regardless of our preferred candidate, we can still meet here at RS and jointly fight against the onslaught of liberalism, socialism, and statism by the Obama Administration and the Dems in the Congress.

In summary, I consider RS as my special meeting place with like-minded conservatives/republicans/libertarians regardless of their camps.

As for Obama’s Birth Certificate issue, I am not really very enthusiastic about it. About 51-53% of Americans voted for him in the last election. Whether he’s really a natural born citizen or not, it doesn’t matter anymore. Half of the people wanted him to be their President. I have already accepted and respected that 6 months ago. But let me be clear: I have nothing against the “birthers”. Like what you’ve said, I think it also induces a psychological narrative that The One’s is not really working for the general interests of the people who voted for him as President. Why? There’s still a doubt that The One is not really “one of us”. For all its worth, the irony of the BC issue is that it brings more colorful…. and (sorry) funny … narrative against Obama.

So, Cheers!

Now … to a more serious stuff:

To Anti-Palins... EAT THIS!

…. Does that make me a closet Palinbot? I hope not. LOL!

I have been here going on 4 years...

Wubbies World (Diary) Sunday, July 26th at 8:37AM EST (link)

I remember the last election and the beat down that took place of Fredheads in the name of party unity. The Directors made a decision to unify the party behind the nominated candidate. It was, and is a logical decision. I didn’t enjoy it, but it was for a reason.

I have found the party intelligentsia has their favorites and support them. I have found that this web site has always been reasoned if not fair. I have always found Eric and company good people and that is why I stay here, though mostly in the background now.

The Sarah Palin thing is a unique situation. A mind set has developed about here that is unusual and I can’t explain it. When it comes to conservatism she is what we need in a candidate, however, the dynamics of her resignation and the pasting in the press have made her viability tenuous at best.

I am still hopeful with Sarah making her way onto the national scene, but I am not going to hold my breath.

Much the same way the mainstream of the Republican Party has turned its back on Marco Rubio, it appears they despise Sarah Palin even more. I base that statement on my readings on blogs and news sites.

It has always been evident to me that if you are not anointed by the main stream of the party, they do their best to cut you off at the knees before you can threaten them. Sarah is in that situation right now. Marco Rubio isn’t to that point, but he is ruffling some feathers by not going away like he is suppose too.

This is why I don’t call myself a Republican anymore. Fred Thompson, Sarah Palin, Bobby Jindal and Marco Rubio are the type of candidates we need more than ever. However, the Republican Party is doing all they can to cut them off at the knees. Not me, they have my support.

I agree but on the Resignation thing:

Rod_Patrick (Diary) Sunday, July 26th at 9:50AM EST (link)

I’ve been turned off by several Palin diaries where the theme was generally “The victimhood of Sarah Palin.” Maybe it’s because that I hate Republicans and conservatives playing the role of “victim”.

Thus, for my own selfish reason, I like and support Sarah’s resignation.

I want to hear Sarah Palin’s offensive starting Monday. (It’s her last week as AK governor, btw.)

How much she can hit on Obama in the next 3 years … shall be my gauge in supporting her Presidential ambition in 2012.

As for the issue of “experience” (Palin’s 2 years as Governor due to her resignation), it doesn’t make sense to me anymore. Obama will have 4 years of actual experience as President by 2012. No republican except the Bushes can match that.

For me, my take of experience by 2012 will be something like this:

Most important experience as Presidentiable by 2012 => NON-EXPERIENCE (at least minimal participation) to Washington’s destruction of American economy and values for the period 2009-2012.

But at the moment:

LET US BE UNITED IN SUPPORTING OUR LOCAL CANDIDATES IN 2010. That’s the most important job that we must do at the moment.

Good points, Rod.

azaeroprof (Diary) Sunday, July 26th at 10:58AM EST (link)

I agree with much of what you said in these posts and appreciate your feedback. I, too, agree that we need to focus on stopping Obama’s agenda now, and let 2012 come later. I do think, though, that it’s fine to discuss any relevant news that involves prospective candidates as it arises. The folks here are smart enough to multitask.

I also think the vast majority of folks that show up here are smart enough to learn (though some may need a gentle nudge here and there) to make reasoned arguments rather than spout emotion-based rants or raves. There may be a few hard cases that just won’t get it and they can be dealt with more directly. My only problem is with the comments that involve name-calling, particularly that which lumps whole groups into the insult. This will make readers and new members think twice about keeping RedState on their reading list.

How much she can hit on Obama in the next 3 years

izoneguy (Diary) Sunday, July 26th at 11:27AM EST (link)

That will be easy. Obama has one real “Gem” everyday.
Sarah will be real busy as she will have over 1000 opportunities to show that Obama is a failure and bad for America.

The point cannot be made often enough: Modern liberalism, as embodied in the Obama presidency, is the defender of the status quo. And the status quo is a road to economic ruin. Political forces cannot redistribute the wealth that the economic system does not produce.

Early Palin agenda

Kentucky Scott (Diary) Sunday, July 26th at 12:02PM EST (link)

I don’t believe that Governor Palin is focusing on 2012 right now. She knows her best role is to serve as national political torturer of Democrats and Squishy Republicans. Her photograph yesterday holding Mark Levin’s new book Liberty and Tyranny: A Conservative Manifesto shows she understands how to send a message without saying a word. She has the next 16 months to lead the conservative agenda without focusing a single minute on her future. The more they push back on her the more she can speak the truth about the conservative message and the destruction wrought by the liberal agenda. Don’t underestimate her ability to reach independents, Republicans and Democrats who are sick of politics as usual.

Someone in their comments said we don’t need to focus on rock stars right now and that is exactly right … we need to focus on the driving the message of liberty and conservative government going into November 2010 with every messenger we have. If Sarah Palin is the top draw at political rallies this time next year, you can be sure there will be a party wide recalculation for her 2012 prospects. If not, she will know where she stands.

I agree. Same goes to all good Rs/Cs out there.

Rod_Patrick (Diary) Sunday, July 26th at 5:26PM EST (link)

The more potential Rs/Cs for President are … the better for me and for my country.

Agree with Scott

damron Monday, July 27th at 11:38AM EST (link)

Wholeheartedly agree Scott. I think the main important item on the agenda should be win some elections in 2010 or we will continue to face more of the same and it isn’t going to get better I assure you. The stronger he gets the more damage he is going to do to our Country. I am a Limbaugh fan and like him I have been predicting for over a year now that Obama doesn’t want to do good for our Country. He wants us all eating out of the proverbial govenment trough and so far he’s doing everything he can to assure that. He does not like this Country or what we have stood and fought for or he would not have gone around the world apologizing for our actions. It doesn’t make any difference whether you call him a socialist, communist, stalinist, liberal, racist or whatever. He is not for our Country, is doing grave harm and if he gets in government healthcare the way he wants it, he will have accomplished his mission in my opinion. He can then decide who lives and who dies and when for those who have serious health issues. He has his people voting for him, he will have all ilegals voting for him, has the Unions behind him, ACORN. and doing everything in the world unethical and illegal, so how are we going to beat him?
That should be what we are trying to figure out on sites like this one and I really like RS a lot. We should be trying to figure out how to stop government run healthcare, how to stop ACORN, etc. If we are not successful in some of these issues we are doomed by by numbers alone. And for whatever it’s worth I think Sarah P did the right thing and I think she can be more helpful now. Whether she returns to major politics was covered aptly above in my opinion also.

'hit on' ?

Finrod (Diary) Wednesday, July 29th at 1:34PM EST (link)

I sense some semantic ambiguity here– somehow I think Michelle Obama and Todd Palin would both have problems with Sarah Palin hitting on Barack Obama, going by the Merriam-Webster definition (scroll down to ‘hit on’). Personally, I was flashing back to the old movie Demolition Man, where Sandra Bullock’s character doesn’t grok the distinction between ‘blow this guy’ and ‘blow this guy away’.

but don’t post much. This is a site I visit for info but it is not fun in any way. It’s an information hub but not a feel-good site. There are leaders here who are as controlling as your worst lefty. I have 8 – 10 other sites I visit and actually enjoy. However, they don’t provide the in-depth information RS does. RS also points me to conservative candidates across the country running for the House (and rarely the Senate) I can contribute to.

I’m also a FredHead and a Palin fan and will be watching the next 2 – 3 years very closely. It is extremely likely that if the Republican intelligentsia nominates another McCain type I will not vote in 12 or will go rogue. I am a Rush and Levin conservative but I will never toe the Rino line again. Won’t happen. When push comes to shove, RS will back the Republican candidate no matter who it is. I will not.

I wonder how many others here secretly swear the same.

Gee, Rod,

Flagstaff (Diary) Tuesday, July 28th at 12:43AM EST (link)

you started the thread off with the perfect example of what Prof was writing about.

Whether you like it or not, these people are Republicans, and they’re therefore fair game for commentary about what they say and do. Sometimes this becomes a bit circular, as differences of opinion can go on pretty long, and only time can prove who is right or wrong, or neither or both. As Prof said,

Save the accusations of “bot-tery” for folks who are wrong on facts or who intentionally mislead. When it comes to opinion about what will happen in the future, we are all working with the same equipment, just different backgrounds. Even a wise Latina could see that.

I'm just a loveable little fuzzball!

Achance (Diary) Sunday, July 26th at 11:02AM EST (link)

Actually, if you’ll look as the posting history, I’ve been on the receiving end of far more name-calling and unfounded assusations from the Palinbots than I’ve ever dished out about her or to them. She’s the Republican Obama except that instead of any criticism being racism, with her it’s misogyny or, if you’re Alaskan, you’re a frustrated officeseeker. I’m neither a misogynist nor a frustrated officeseeker. Frankly there’s no way in Hell I’d work for her.

I’ve never made a secret of the fact that I do not and never have liked the woman. She became Governor of my State by shwrewdly and self-interestedly attacking the people who had elevated her and by mythologizing herself with the help of the Anchorage Daily News back when she was every Democrat’s favorite Republican because they thought that a clueless small-town mayor would be easy for a front-rank Democrat to beat. She ran for governor just like Obama ran for President; there was no there there – nobody could really tell you what her program and platform were beyond a few very safe Republican platitudes – and SHE WASN’T FRANK MURKOWSKI, who she and the ADN had completely demonized.

As far as I’m concerned, tomorrow is a great day for Alaska. Hopefully, she’ll hole up for awhile helping her ghostwriter and then she’ll go on an extended book tour and then just fade away to enjoy her money – never to be a factor in Alaska or National politics again.

It’s a great example of having a truly different perspective from the rest of us.

What you see as a negative about the woman, some of us see as admirable achievements. You make a good observation that she defeated Murkowski for some of the same reasons Obama won–folks who would have normally been her opponents supported her early, to their chagrin later when she turned out to be something other than a pushover. (Not exactly a parallel, but indulge me.) I don’t think anybody could go from small-town mayor to bureaucrat to Governor without knowing at least a little about state politics. From a distance, this looks like a good thing.

Sounds like she and Obama must share a similar-sized ego as well. “You CANNOT tell Sarah Palin anything she doesn’t want to hear and it will cost you misery if not your job if you bother her ears with something that doesn’t fit her preconception.” I know from your comments that isn’t a personal experience, but is it at least only second-hand? Just curious.

For anybody who might misunderstand, my comment is not about Sarah Palin, it’s about how different perceptions of her arise.

“I agree that if you have an argument to make do so without name calling and the outright dismissal of those opinions that you disagree with. It won’t happen of course but it would be nice.”

I completely understand what azaerprof is trying to convey in his diary. The newbies, as well as everyone else who comments here for whatvever length of time, needs to understand that not everyone is as knowledgable about all the ins and outs of politics as some others. As long as anyone commenting shows that they are on the Republican/Conservative side of the aisle, they are another vote to rid our country of those marching us into Socialism. There are so many scared to death that tomorrow will be the day we wake up, and find it is too late to change it. I really could care less if those people can’t spell or punctuate properly. They do know how to pull the lever, or touch the screen for those with an R behind their names. They do know how to hold a sign up in protest rallies. It doesn’t take a certain IQ, or education level to tell their friends and family that the unemployment numbers are so high because of Obamas policies. There is not a person here who hasn’t made some dumb or silly comment at one time or another. If you read a comment that you don’t agree with, like, or believe doesn’t add anything to the discussion, either move on, or respectfully educate those that are missing something.

Excellent, well intentioned and needed diary azaerprof. Hopefully your plea will resonate.

Thanks, Jaded & Scope!

When it crosses the line into “Cult of Personality” the person should be shown the door.

The Paullites clearly crossed that line by jamming online polls then touting the results as reflective of the mood of the electorate.

Some of the Palin stuff is getting mighty close. That’s not to say every Palin supporter is a nut.

But it’s 2009, for goodness sakes. It’s time to focus on issues, not candidates. It’s time to play defense against an onslaught of frightful legislative and executive initiatives.

We all had better hope there’s a cadre of new Republican leaders out there for 2012 who are as unknown on the national stage as Sarah Palin was in 2005. And part of Sarah’s magic was that she was a relative unknown, a fresh face. You can get awfully sick of someone in three short years.

Sarah Palin, by quitting office, has dropped herself way down the activism priority list.

When she was a sitting governor under attack, she mattered.

Now? She falls way below such priorities as defeating the Obama agenda, roughing up Obama to take the shine off of him, and gearing up to win in 2010.

People who don’t share those priorities just aren’t going to fit in as well as those who do. Yeah, Palin in her new role can raise money for candidates and such. But the candidates need to be the real stars, not Palin.

The “star” we all need to focus on is the conservative movement. Let’s take down Cap & Trade and this cockamamie health care takeover, and let conservatism be the hero.

We have a chance it didn’t look like we’d get just six months ago, to grow conservatism in the party and in positions of authority.

True conservative leaders will emerge in the process, deserving to be promoted to the next level. And, as experience has shown, some of the wannabes will put their warts on public display, and fall by the wayside.

All politicians can’t campaign and posture all the time. Some of them have to roll up their sleeves and do the heavy lifting, and now’s the time.

Yes, stopping the 2009 agenda and winning the 2010 elections should be absolutely first priority.

But like it or not, Sarah is really the GOP’s only “rock star”. I do hope that changes by 2012 or even 2010, but that’s the way it is now. It is not only in her best interests but also in the interests of the movement to wisely take advantage of that fact to fight Obama and promote our candidates.

On an unrelated note, I should let you know that every time I post a comment, I get a ‘duplicate comment’ screen.

Obama's elevation to rock star status

TNJim (Diary) Sunday, July 26th at 1:50PM EST (link)

is why I’m leery of Palin, or anyone else on our side, being elevated as such. We’re seeing what happens when a personality is elected rather than a person of substance. I like Sarah, and she gave one good speech that addressed conservative principles really well, but now I’m thinking “OK, what else ya got?” The resignation brought her down a few notches in my eyes, time will tell now, by her actions, what else she can offer.

Great post, azaeroprof, and I agree with it 100%. I’m just going on my 5th month here. It’s the only blog site I’ve joined so far, although I read several of them. I am put off sometimes by the name calling, even though I’ve not been the target, yet. But some people are passionate about their views and the direction they want the party to go in, as am I. I’ve tried to maintain a balance in my comments but haven’t lways been successful. But there is a wide range of viewpoints here and most are valuable in constructing arguments against the real enemy, the ObamAgenda.

All flash babble. No center. No substance.

And frankly, Sarah Palin, at least so far, is exactly that. She’s a great speaker. She just doesn’t say anything that goes beyond nice generalities and she’s got exactly zero accomplishments (other than electoral) to talk about.

Your little groupies will be long gone about 10 seconds after she implodes. What you really should do is work to educate them on principle as directly opposed to personal.

She has that ‘celebrity’ thing going. Why ask why? Take it and use it and be thankful for it. If she draws crowds and raises money, and a bunch of R’s get elected because of it, she gets to write her own ticket afterward. That’s how the game works.

mbecker908 (Diary) Sunday, July 26th at 2:41PM EST (link)

Because there’s been nothing to be seen so far. I really hope she heads for FL and PA. Babs opponent in CA could use some help too. And then there’s the fella in ID who’s on the front page right now.

Frankly, the biggest problem with her “resignation” is the lame excuse she tossed out, “it’s for my family”. IF that is really the reason, she is totally, absolutely, 100% unqualified to run for POTUS. Because they’ve only been shooting at her – and her family – with small arms so far. She mounts a POTUS run and they’ll bring out the heavy artillery.

It's for my family is a tried and true excuse;

redneck_hippie (Diary) Sunday, July 26th at 2:50PM EST (link)

however in my experience in the corporate world, it is most often resorted to upon being politely asked to seek other employment. In the aftermath of the resignation, Sarah clarified in comments online that she was seeking a higher calling. The libs are scratching their heads over that one, or pretending to anyway, to this day. I believe they are disembling and probably are in denial of what they fear will be a fundraising onslaught.

Intuitively what I think most likely is that with the strong support of her family she left a lameduck situation, whoever is at fault, and decided not to get mad but get even. The Ds won’t know what hit them when Moosehuntin awesome kicks in.

Activists Taking Action: Unified Patriots

There is no comparison between

mbecker908 (Diary) Sunday, July 26th at 3:10PM EST (link)

“for my family” in corporate life v. politics.

Don’t kid yourself about “the Ds won’t know what hit them…” THEY actually understand that politics is just war with another name. And they’ve apparently already beaten her into running off one battlefield. She sticks her head up and they will open fire with big guns.

In Sarah Palin’s case, “family” is nothing but a weak excuse.

I'll agree to disagree -

redneck_hippie (Diary) Sunday, July 26th at 3:23PM EST (link)

Whether it’s a businessman or politician, it’s for the family is lame. The people I saw at the top of the corporate world who left under that excuse were covering up the fact that they’d been canned. I did not take it that that was the primary reasoning in Sarah’s case, she said she left for a higher calling.

Being harrassed with spurious lawsuits was wasting time and resources, and a tactical retreat takes the lawyers out of the equation.

We are looking through different lenses. I heard Sarah saying her Governorship was no longer working for Alaska and that she polled her family before deciding to resign.

Activists Taking Action: Unified Patriots

Mea culpa.

mbecker908 (Diary) Sunday, July 26th at 3:36PM EST (link)

I misread and misunderstood about your “business” comment.

With respect to Palin, she specifically mentioned the attacks on her family. And she specifically mentioned the ethics issues.

1. As I’ve noted “the family” is an excuse that should take her out of consideration for an election for dog catcher, let alone POTUS.
2. With respect to the ethics stuff, that is total crap. All she had to do was get cert from the AG that what she did was part of her job and they would have substituted the “State of Alaska” for her. She would be out of it, for the most part, and she’d have exactly zero legal fees and no liability.

We have to remember that no candidate will ever be perfect and the last

prof, with respect to Palin...

mbecker908 (Diary) Sunday, July 26th at 11:21AM EST (link)

The problem here isn’t Sarah Palin. The problem is a handful of completely out of touch worshipers who refuse to understand that Sarah Palin is a politician not a savior of the party and the country.

She, like every other potential candidate, has pluses and minuses. The handful – and I’m specifically referring to posters like Josh Painter and Gary – have her on a pedestal that she will never attain. In addition, to the handful, there is only one priority in politics and that is promoting Palin. To hell with the current legislative session or 2010, those just don’t matter because when St. Sarah is elected she will fix all that is wrong.

Sarah Palin may be a candidate in ’12. She may even be a viable candidate in ’12. But she’s certainly not the top priority for Republicans right now.

I agree, beck

azaeroprof (Diary) Sunday, July 26th at 11:33AM EST (link)

though I always enjoyed Josh’s diaries. I think he focused primarily on Palin because he probably saw that as his role on the front page (though I certainly don’t want to speak for him). IMHO, he at least attempted to keep his tone informative and not TOO cheerleading.

Where I differ with you (if you can call it a difference?) is that there are a huge number of folks who absolutely love Sarah Palin (e.g most of my facebook friend list!) but are not what I would call political activists. Many are becoming active because of her and Obama’s train wreck, and I don’t want to see them scared away from RS.

Oops, I’ve engaged in another Palin discussion. That really wasn’t the point of my diary! But thanks for the comment!

Agree with all you say, becker, BUT

janis (Diary) Sunday, July 26th at 11:49AM EST (link)

those people who put Sarah Palin on that pedestal will either be satisfied with her actions or doomed to disappointment, regardless of what any of us say about her. To show up and cross swords with them at every single opportunity doesn’t make them rethink their position, it only reinforces it. Same with the birthers. They’re not going to drop their beliefs based on what you, or I, or anyone else thinks.

After reading azaeroprof’s diary, it led me to rethink the notion of jumping into any fray that is based on someone’s hardcore feelings about either of these two issues. And, yeah, I used the word “feelings” because much of the disagreement on both issues comes from that. It’s unpleasant to watch regular posters going at each other hammer and tong—and that’s from someone who regularly chooses to engage in pointy-stick behavior with trolls and mobys, not from somebody who is averse to doing battle at all.

Bottom line is that if you don’t agree with someone on these two issues in particular, then avoid their comments and diaries. To engage, particularly with hostility , just draws more attention and inflates the feelings on both sides. If we wish to enlarge the membership both here and in the GOP, then it’s perhaps time to live and let live on the birth cert. and on Sarah Palin. Both issues will resolve in time, no matter what we say or don’t say.

Concur in part, dissent in part, janis.

Achance (Diary) Sunday, July 26th at 12:34PM EST (link)

Other than trolls and mobies, I try to reserve namecalling for those who do it to me or who personally attack me. But if I am personally attacked, the only way I walk away is when a moderator orders me to – and it will stay that way.

I believe we should engage the true believers whether birthers or Palinbots, or Paultards – pick one. We encourage engaging with liberals who show up here in what for them passes for good faith. Why wouldn’t we engage with self-described conservatives, Republicans, or libertarians so long as they engage in something like good faith?

With regard to Palin, I look back at her days in the Murkowski Administration and deeply regret that we treated her with kid gloves. Her self-promoting myth about how she took on the Party and the corrupt Murkowski Administration is simply not true but when she did her kiss and tell with the Anchorage Daily News, we were all good Republicans and observed the 11th Commandment. Little Ms. Ethics hounded Randy Ruedrich out of office then turned on AG Greg Renkes and along with the ADN kept up a drumbeat of complaints and accusations against the Administration. Even after she’d openly declared and Frank’s numbers were in the toilet, she was treated with kid gloves by the Party and both Murkowski and Binckley, her primary opponents. Knowles tried to take her on about her lack of experience but he, too, kept the gloves on and left her, or more correctly her supporters, the opening to remind people how much they didn’t like the way Knowles got his experience – that made her governor. And when she allied with the Democrats to carry out an agenda that would normally have been anathema to Republicans, she was still immune from criticism. We who left her alone found ourselves feeling pretty foolish for doing so when she made her National debut by bragging about how she’d “cleaned up” all us corrupt Republicans. I must admit that I react with absolute glee when Little Ms. Ethics whines and snivels about all those bad people making Ethics Act complaints about her; that would be the Ethics Act that she’s so proud of having amended as a part of cleaning us all up. Let me assure you that had they won, John McCain would have had four or eight very busy years as he constantly watched his back; you really don’t want to be in a position that Sarah Palin wants.

I’m sure there are plenty of Clinton supporters who deeply regret their treating Comrade Obama with kid gloves because they at first didn’t take him seriously enough, the same mistake we made with Palin, and then couldn’t find an adequate way to respond to his nastiness, something neither we nor Knowles ever figured out with Palin and her supporters either.

As to the “Birthers,” I agree with them that he’s hiding something and that the media has given him a pass on it. That’s playbook stuff for the Left to marginalize anyone who is holding something damaging. They’ve made people who question Comrade Obama into nuts and we’ve helped them do it – unfortunately some of them didn’t need much help.

Likewise the libertarians and Libertarians; we NEED them. The “three-legged stool” isn’t big enough to win; we need the “government off my back and out of my pocket” coalition with libertarians that Reagan and Gingrich were able to put together. We’ve seen the limits and eventual consequences of “not Democrats” as a strategy under GWB. You can’t do business with the more extreme libertarians, but there is a powerful libertarian streak in a lot of states that we have lost or are barely holding, so we can’t just dismiss them if we want to return to power.

In Vino Veritas

Understood, Achance. It's fine by me to point

janis (Diary) Sunday, July 26th at 12:56PM EST (link)

out the realities of both situation. But when it goes on for 90+ comments and only hardens each commenter’s position and adds the ad hominems thick and furious, then what’s the point anymore?

As to someone calling me names and me just walking away, that’s not going to happen with me either unless, as you stated, a moderator forces me to do it. So we’re definitely in agreement on that one.

As for Sarah Palin, she’s now the ex-gov. for Alaska and out of your hair on that one, Art. Whatever she does from here on out will be in the full view of the American public, not just up there in Alaska where most of us don’t have a clue what happens or why. It’s why we rely on you and AKSteve to let us know. ( And where is he, by the way? Haven’t seen him post in a long time.) Sarah Palin will NEVER be treated with kid gloves by the MSM as Obama has been from the start, so I don’t think you have to worry that we’ll be treated to some fantasy version of her as we have been Obama.

On the birth cert. issue, yes, he’s hiding that as well as many other important pieces of info that other presidents have disclosed before. And he’s hiding all of them because they don’t do him credit otherwise they’d be front and center if they added to his self-perceived glory. It’s fair to keep requesting all of them and asking why they are being kept from public record. But it’s not healthy to front and center those things to the exclusion of what’s going on right now in front of us which is the daily destruction of our country. I’m much more in the camp of taking down any and all of the Obama programs at inception rather than having to try to roll them back later.

To that end, I’m certainly on board with looking for and encouraging those who wish to join together to bring about smaller gov., tax cuts and a strong national defense. Thanks for your opinion, Achance, it’s always worthwhile to read it.

posting a little less because I started to feel myself becoming a one trick anti Palin pony and that isn’t my objective in being here. I’ve been busy with life and also with trying to get up to speed on who is who and what is what for 2010, seems to be the best use of my political energy right now. It is Summer in Alaska, which is a manic time for us all and we also have a really promising new municipal administration in Anchorage.

BTW, kudos to the folks here closer to the DC scene. Considering our numbers, what we’ve managed in terms of pushback on carbon taxing, socialist medicine, and card check is amazing.

Understand your point on the one-trick thing, but I’ve always enjoyed reading your comments because you were a moderate who fell off the fence to conservatism. That’s always a nice transformation to watch and to feel, since I pretty much went the “kinda liberal” to solid conservative route myself.

Certainly a journey worth taking, no? As you mentioned, 2010 looms large as a transformative election, quite possibly the most important election in our lives considering the stakes that are on the table. We all must keep fighting the good fight so we can tell our children and grandchildren how close we came to losing their heritage.

Re McCain watching his back in regards to Palin

Finrod (Diary) Wednesday, July 29th at 1:47PM EST (link)

Given how many knives John McCain has plunged into the backs of fellow Republicans, it would have been only fitting if VP Palin had returned the favor to him.

Let’s get down to brass tacks here. How much for the ape?

Well janis, if people want to be rational

mbecker908 (Diary) Sunday, July 26th at 12:55PM EST (link)

and discuss reality I’m all for it.

People like Gary and Josh get way beyond “on my nerves” when they ignore every semblance of reality. They are not contributing to getting people involved, because just like RonPaul supporters, when Palin gets her head handed to her and she either doesn’t survive as a contender to make the primaries or gets knocked out, they’ll be the bunny-with-the-ball and wander off in a huff. They won’t build the Party and build a coalition to beat the Left.

Gary is a flat out liar, Josh is just removed from reality when it comes to Palin – just take a look at that piece of crap he threw on the wall (that made the Rec List) and note where he can be found blogging. They show up here and take a dump in the living room and I’ll go after them with a real vengeance – said vengeance is commonly known “facts” which Josh ignores and Gary would know one if it bit him.

We will only win by being committed to facts and to a conservative philosophy, never by committing to individuals. In our few shining moments – namely 1980 and 1994 – it wasn’t about Reagan or Newt. Reagan didn’t become an icon until after he was out of office and Newt burned out so fast I’m not sure he ever made it. The ‘bots are about individuals – namely RonPaul and Sarah Palin – and don’t give a damn about the important stuff. For starters, like winning.

becker, the last thing in this world I want to do

janis (Diary) Sunday, July 26th at 1:12PM EST (link)

is argue with either you or Achance. Curmudgeons must stick together! I understand the points that both of you have made in your comments and I tend to agree to an extent. I’m as committed to the facts as both of you are and know that we on the Right tend to win more often than not by sticking to the facts.

But there is that ephemeral thing called “hope” that the Dems can’t completely co-opt in the name of Obama. For those who love Sarah Palin, it is their hope that she will be the panacea to all our problems. She won’t be because no one person can be, but still they hope. And I won’t take that hope from them anymore than I appreciated someone trying to take my hope about Fred from me during the primaries. That attitude that “this person will fix everything” fell away after Fred bowed out and I soon enough readjusted my thinking, as did many others. I wasn’t happy about it, but I put on my “big girl panties” and went on with life and with supporting what I had to support to try and stop Obama. And many of these people who see Sarah as many of us saw Fred will do the same thing if she turns out to not be the answer.

So fight the good fight, becker, it’s one of the things I love about you, that no one is ever left wondering where you stand on an issue. :-) Just think about the notion that not bothering to engage sometimes says just as much as beating the snot out of a commenter or diarist who supports Sarah or the birth cert. subject. A dearth of comments often lets a comment or diary just die a quick and quiet death instead of going out like a Viking in a blaze that you can see for miles.

To quote a Marine I know...

mbecker908 (Diary) Sunday, July 26th at 3:06PM EST (link)

Hope ain’t a plan.

And the difference between Fredheads and Palinites is that Fredheads started out being pretty rational people. They would listen to an argument and counter with a rational, well thought out and well presented counterargument. Unlike the folks I’ve mentioned.

I have no confidence that the “hopeies” are going to be with us long. Hell, they’re NOT with us now.

Hope by itself isn't a plan, becker, but hope

janis (Diary) Sunday, July 26th at 3:27PM EST (link)

coupled with searching for solutions is a great start. If many people become informed about the issues because of their “hope” for Sarah Palin, that’s a good thing. If more people become passionate about voting again and about feeling that they DO have skin in the game and a chance to help effect how their government runs, that ‘s a good thing.

The more informed they may become, the better their arguments will become. Yes, yes, I know, it’s hopelessly naive of me, but I do believe that Sarah Palin may have the ability to bring more people to be more involved with the process of governance. If I’m mistaken , so what? And if many of those who started out with only hope just drop out along the way, so what? It’s not as if it cost us anything anyway. Let them show up here, let them learn or let them leave as they choose. As long as they aren’t real whackjobs and obey the posting rules, what does it truly cost us?

And with respect to what you've written here

mbecker908 (Diary) Sunday, July 26th at 3:41PM EST (link)

He nudged me though to try it, and now I am more confident in expressing myself. Though I feel puny about my knowledge compared to the excellent minds RS has. ever daring to make a comment and it was my belief in Fred Dalton Thompson as our candidate that prompted me to set up my account here in the first place. That’s one of the reasons why I don’t want the discord here over Sarah Palin to run some newbies away who might otherwise stay and be valuable members both here and in the move to bring our country back to where it should be.

Thank you for your compliments on my additions here. One of the reasons I waited so long to comment at all was because the level of discourse here was so much more intelligent than at other sites. It’s taken a while to “find my feet” so to speak, but it’s also a lot easier to comment here if you take the time to learn the regulars and contributors so you know how to understand what they’re saying. Nothing gets you gakked more reliably than choosing to believe that this is a democracy here and that moderators and contributors are worth the same as a newbie strutting his stuff.

for some talk around incivility of discourse as practiced by the minute portion of RSers who have periodic lapses. Tempers run high and names are called, while the majority remain silent.

Your point, and it is eminently valid, is that this is no way to grow a movement. Whether it is the BC issue or any other ‘bot issue, the site will survive by the common sense and decency of the many. I’ll continue to do my part by letting ‘botism die through lack of comment. And I agree with what several say, and especially janis’ comment that we are not changing any ‘botists to non-’botism. For every ‘bot who takes his ball and goes away, several non-’bots may do the same. I don’t categorize the ‘bots into candidate ‘bots or issue ‘bots. To me the bot is closeminded and/or infatuated.

That said, I’m glad there is a Sarah Palin. I consider Mark Levin, Sarah and other voices of conservatism (L. and D Cheney!!) to be the much-needed catalysts to grow our movement and inspire activism and fundraising, as well as educate.

Do records count?

SteveLA (Diary) Sunday, July 26th at 3:25PM EST (link)

As a standard that Republicans should judge those who seek a nomination for office from the party, should the record of governance of those who seek the endorsement of the Republican party and my vote be considered?

As a reality based voter, not one that places how I “feel” about a candidate for office, the reality based questions I look at are:

Is the record of governance from a political office long, detailed, and represents a balanced approach to conservative principles?

How much I agree with or disagree with and to what extent to they take a stance on issues that I care about or don’t care about.

Are they effective in office with a measure of passing legislation as a measure of effectiveness, or does their own personal hubris get in the way of getting the people’s work done?

Are they well learned on the issues confronting this country and can they communicate conservative principles that address these issues in an effective and coherent manner?

Are they ethical and to some degree moral in their dealings in their office, and in their personal lives?

There are no easy answers to these questions, and I tend to think everyone is entitled to their make their own personal evaluation list and how they rank the importance of the issues that they have place on that ranking list.

In terms of a kinder gentler RS, well discussions within the framework of really looking hard at all the records of those seeking office, good and bad for any candidate for office is a good thing in my view. The other stuff…not so much.

Everyone Can Speak; Not Everyone Should Vote!

Ausonius (Diary) Sunday, July 26th at 5:36PM EST (link)

As a teacher of ancient and modern languages, as well as History, rational argumentation is something I can comment on.

We do not live in an era where rational argumentation is dominant: when the nonsense called “debates” occurs during presidential elections, little true debating or rational argumentation occurs. Read the Lincoln-Douglas debates and contrast them with anything from the 1960 election onward.

Conservative argumentation, even on the level of Joe the Plumber’s of Toledo, beats Harvard-educated Nobama’s: always remember how Nobama admitted to Mr. Wurzelbacher that federal revenues would fall with higher taxes, but that an irrational desire for the left-wing version of “fairness” was more important to Nobama.

Liberal argumentation appeals to emotions in general: this allows them to use exaggeration and to invent what I call “factistics” (phony facts based on either real or phony statistics) in service of their supposedly greater good: a controlled and egalitarian society of happy drones.

Usually the argumentation here is not bad: occasionally I have indeed noticed a ganging up on somebody whose argumentation followed from an emotional dislike of something, e.g. a gut dislike of some candidate was later explicated rationally, but the gang took no heed of it, focusing only on the initial emotional comment.

On Palin: I do not see her as developing into a strong national candidate able to beat Nobama, even though she does turn many people into warm goo when they think of her doing so. However, I am willing to be proven wrong, and would be delighted to have my impression overturned!

On the title here: given that we do not live in an educated era, despite the technical marvels of the age, which (never forget) are always – in any age – produced by an educated minority, we should allow everyone to speak their mind, but the dangers of ochlocracy have already been proven by the election of Nobama, the constant re-election of e.g. Kennedy, Rangel, and the felony mayors of assorted cities, D.C. among them. This is a case for limiting the franchise, a feline which, realistically and unfortunately, will never be re-bagged!

Rational Argumentation hardly seems to be involved in such selections!

So our main hope is to make our arguments as simple and clear as possible!

When I see a potential candidate that takes a different approach and in doing that sticks to conservatives ideals, I say…Take a breath man!!!!! We all want the same things…..more than others…..JUST DON’T! put down comment like you did mine. I have been conservative since I can first remember my dad arguing with the black and white tv news.

You want ‘Debate’ MOE??????? Stop berating contributors and start DEBATING IDEAS!!!!!!! Why don’t we start with the responsibility of OUR National Government???? I suggest it is the following:

Form a more perfect union.
Establish justice.
Insure domestic tranquility.
Provide for the common defense.
Promote the general welfare.
Secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity

Respectfully, Let the debate begin…………………………………..

Before we begin debating...you must..
