Digesting Paul Ryan
The central point for those few Republicans who wanted a more cautious choice for Vice President: the highly successful CEO has hired a brilliant Sales Vice President. Consider:
1. Mitt Romey has solved the problem of boring people by getting bogged down in the details of budgets. If he is going to win, somebody has to explain entitlement reform, tax reform, and the economic folly of Obamacare. Romney needs to project a vision, not be forced to argue with reporters and the Obama campaign about budget offsets and 10 year projections. Ryan can make that stuff interesting, and few will challenge his assertions.
2. For the majority who think that the economy is the number one issue, we now have a team of Mister Inside (Paul Ryan who is as knowledgeable as anyone in the country on federal spending) and Mister Outside (Mitt Romney who is as knowldegeable as anyone in the country on what makes the private sector work.) These are different, and both bases are covered by stellar performers.
3. The public’s perception of Ryan before his selection was 39 % positive; 25 % negative. The optimistic Ryan pitches growth rather than austerity – enough to easily carry him in a Democratic Wisconsin district. As a Catholic from a working class background, he will have personal resonance with “Reagan Democrats” from Pittsburgh to St. Louis. The national Democrats will attack him as pro-life, pro-gun, and pro conventional marriage – but a majority of Americans agree with all of these positions.
4. The youthful and intelligent Ryan affords an opportunity to draw a sharp contrast with the 70 year old, bumbling Joe Biden. Key dates: September 3, effectively the last date by which Biden could be replaced on the ticket, and October 11 , the Vice Presidential debate. It ain’t Gingrich – Obama, but it should still be quite entertaining.
5. And for those who want bipartisan cooperation in Washington, Ryan has developed his most recent Medicare reform proposal in conjunction with Democratic Senator Ron Wyden of Oregon and has been “endorsed” by former Clinton Chief of Staff Erskine Bowles as “…amazing. He is honest, he is straightforward, he is sincere. And the budget that he came forward with is just like Paul Ryan. It is a sensible, straightforward, serious budget and it cut the budget deficit just like we did, by $4 trillion.” This while he remains a Tea Party favorite who solidifies the likelihoood of the Republicans enjoying a significant enthusiasm / turnout advantage.
Sometimes things seem so obvious on the morning after.
