As a former member of the VA GOP State Central Committee, let me disabuse anyone that this is at all complicated. The SCC is comprised of activists who are true conservatives. The nominees are universally not. They are politicians who seek compromise with liberals (for some reason, it's never the other way around) to expand the role of government in our lives, albeit perhaps less slowly. I'd go so far as to say that running for office is an automatic disqualifier for actually holding that office. But long gone are the days of "standing for office".

Given that, incumbents universally want primaries. Conservatives universally want conventions. The fight between the two was sickening enough to watch that I finally left the GOP. Tom Davis, my former GOP representative, told me to my face, "I will drive all of you out if it's the last thing I do". So much for conservative principles . And this was the man that led the House GOP efforts to elect Republicans nationwide. He is slime incarnate, divorcing a wife of 30 years for a younger woman. When we defeated him in his efforts to have a primary for his Senate campaign over Jim Gilmore, the coward bailed ship and opted not to run. THAT is what incumbents in this state do.

Any politician in VA that wants a primary, and is in the GOP, is - by definition - a RINO.

And that includes the current governor, who is a nice guy and all (aren't they all?), but who is decidedly a backroom wheeler dealer rather than a visionary leader. Virginia has emphatically grown the role of government in its citizens lives since George Allen was governor -- under a GOP led Legislature. People have no idea,

If Romney picks McDonnell as the VP, then he will only reenforce his lost standing among Reagan conservatives. I've seen first hand what the elected officials in this state do, and if THIS is the GOP, I want no part of it. Moving to Wisconsin, or better yet, Texas, seems to be the only answer.

In equating Ron Paul with Austrian economics, Paul, at best, is a follower of Murry Rothbard, who broke away from the Austrians a long time ago.

Most Austrian economists currently are not even big supporters of a gold standard, with a few exceptions. The theory currently in favor is a constant money supply standard. Or else "free money" in which banks operate mostly independent of a central bank.

The rumor mill is continuing to suggest Mark Warner will run for governor for the Dems. At this time, I'd say Warner would best either Boiling or Cooch. We need more of a bench, maybe Sean Connaughton.
