Well, that’s one way to rebut a rumor.
The 17-year-old daughter of Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin is pregnant, Palin said on Monday in an announcement intended to knock down rumors by liberal bloggers that Palin faked her own pregnancy to cover up for her child.
Bristol Palin, one of Alaska Gov. Palin’s five children with her husband, Todd, is about five months pregnant and is going to keep the child and marry the father, the Palins said in a statement released by the campaign of Republican presidential candidate John McCain.
Bristol Palin made the decision on her own to keep the baby, McCain aides said.
As blackhedd posted earlier: The foul denizens of Obama’s online base, who find the very idea of Sarah Palin as a strong feminist conservative mother absurd, engaged in the worst kind of putrid mudslinging over the past few days, suggesting in no uncertain terms that her daughter was the mother of Trig Palin. Of course, those of us who laughed at the baseless suggestions of the child-hating left (she’s not fat enough! they shriek) now know that to be impossible. We also know that McCain himself knew of Bristol’s pregnancy - which had to have made this past 48 hours all the more frustrating for the campaign. For all these reasons, it’s good to have this announcement come now.
We’ll see how the media inevitably bashes this young woman for her choice in the coming days, in the wake of covering up the John Edwards love child for 2+ years, and botching the story when it came out as they bent over backwards to avoid criticism. Nah, that wasn’t bias.
But it’s fitting that in this moment, one of the toughest a young woman can face, Bristol Palin has chosen on her own to take the right path. This baby is not a “punishment,”, as Obama so famously said; it is not an object to be destroyed, as Obama argued for in the Illinois State Senate; he or she is a human life, one worthy of receiving the love of a mother and father. And we rejoice in the knowledge that a family will receive this blessing into the world.
Have no doubts about this: Bristol Palin is brave. Braver than any of the hideous bloggers, hiding in their anonymity, who throw muck at her mother and who will doubtlessly revile her decision. Braver than the foes of the right to life who would offer her a knife and a vacuum to end this minor inconvenience. Brave enough to know that it’s not enough to talk about doing the right thing - it’s doing that right thing when the moment calls for it the most.
We thank her for making this choice now - her child will thank her forever.
We send our strongest prayers and best wishes for Bristol Palin, for her future husband, for her child, and for the entire Palin clan.
[addendum by haystack] If Barack Obama had his way, the news would be about the loss of another innocent life rather than this nonsense and child-like “journalism” being spewed from the likes of the Washington Post about “shotgun weddings.”
There’s crass, and there’s class. Here’s Sarah Palin’s comments from the same WaPo article:
“We have been blessed with five wonderful children who we love with all our heart and mean everything to us,” said Sarah and Todd Palin in a statement. “Our beautiful daughter Bristol came to us with news that as parents we knew would make her grow up faster than we had ever planned. We’re proud of Bristol’s decision to have her baby and even prouder to become grandparents. As Bristol faces the responsibilities of adulthood, she knows she has our unconditional love and support.”
Sarah Palin is class personified…and she is 1/2 the reason Obama has already lost this election.

Now what will the nutroots do?
Just_Me Monday, September 1st at 12:23PM EDT (link)They will assume that Palin will lose all support from the social cons-because they do not understand them. They think social cons are about judgement rather than forgiveness.
And of course this plays well into the contrast of Obama-who views pregnancies in teenage girls as punishments, while the Palins are looking at this as a blessing.
Tough time for the teenage girl, but this was going to come out at some point-kind of hard to hide a pregnancy in its last months.
The real question is what the nutroots do.
This only makes Palin even more an “every woman” that people can relate to. One of my mom’s best friends faced the same thing with her 16 year old daughter 25 years ago. The teenage daughter and her boyfriend married, and 25 years later are still happily married with one son in college and the son Obama would view as a punishment is earning his doctorate in math and is also now married (no babies yet though).
Social cons consider babies to be blessings, even if there may be some stress in dealing with the initial shock. Liberals view them as punishments and burdens.
Glad to be a social con on this issue.
Hmmm...
BSchlitz Monday, September 1st at 12:23PM EDT (link)I hope Bristol is doing okay and that she avoids the media spotlight. She must be terrified. I can’t imagine, though, why Palin would want to subject her daughter to so much public scrutiny when she knew this information would come out. But honestly, thinking about my own family…I do a pretty good job telling my own daughters to ignore the liberal hollywood culture and the “role models” like Britney Spears and LIndsay Lohan it produces. But what do I tell my daughter now if she asks why she should hold herself to a higher moral standard? Who can I point to to say: See, honey? This young lady chose to think about her education, her career, her future, and chose to wait. And how can a “strong feminist conservative mother” who can’t even instill conservative values in her own child hope to represent this country for all the world to see? God bless them, and help them.
Maybe she can have Madonna sing at the convention

Some comments below that illustrate the narratives emerging
talleyrand Monday, September 1st at 12:27PM EDT (link)taken from comments in the Fox and CNN headline stories:
“This woman is real. She’s a role model for how to handle a child of today’s world with christian morals. This happens everyday and families need to know that keeping the baby and family support really can work. Way to go Palin’s.”
“This just confirms that the Palins are an average American family dealing with issues and problems that average families have to deal with.”
“Isn’t it wonderful that we will have someone in the whitehouse that can relate to the issues within the American family.”
Also, there’s alot of “this happened to my daughter/sister/friend/me” going on. Women are identifying with this situation. Women are realizing that Sarah Palin lives in their world. They are being reminded through this incident that she will represent that world, and the needs of a mother, wife, and successful career woman, in Washington.
The first method for estimating the intelligence of a ruler is to look at the men he has around him.

Just_Me Monday, September 1st at 12:52PM EDT (link)Just curious.
I think in the end it highlights the difference between the views of those in favor of life verses those in favor of choice.
Palin sees this in the end as a blessing.
Obama views it as a punishment.
Every mom’s desire is that her teenage daughter will not end up pregnant, but we all know it is a possibility.
Even the best of teaching can be ignored, and sometimes teenagers take stupid risks. Accidents happen.
At least the Palin’s are supporting their daughter, and look forward to being grandparents.
If the media and/or democrats go after the Palin’s on this issue it will kill them.
I suspect the vein of attack will be “Palin is an unfit mother, therefore she is unfit to be VP” but I don’t think that is going to fly-too many women out there relate. Too many dad’s out there relate.

Here's what bothers me
olderthangandalf Monday, September 1st at 12:54PM EDT (link)Unwanted pregnancies happen, and in the best of families and to the best of people. You would have to be a real bluenose to get censorious about that.
But here’s what bothers me: given the current circumstances, where a late stage pregnancy was bound to come out, why would Sarah Palin agree to run for VP now?
Why not wait until 2012 or 2016 to seek national office, and give her child a break? If it is meant to be, it will be meant to be then as well.
What is going to happen to this kid is going to be sad, and ugly, and life scarring. It’s not going to be the Dems so much as the paparazzi and the tabloid press, and they are more heartless and cynical than any politician.
As parents, we make all kinds of decisions that compromise our goals but that allow our kids a little bit better life. We turn down the promotion that requires a move during a crucial school year, we work less overtime when they are needy, we sacrifice on buying stuff we want so the college fund can be filled up or they can have that life memory of a trip to DisneyWorld.
I’m just not getting why someone who is like the Sarah Palin I thought I was getting to know wouldn’t do that kind of thing, and pass on this opportunity for the sake of her child. She would have had other chances. I even think that maybe McCain should have considered moving on to Pawlenty or Romney rather than subjecting this poor kid to what she’s going to go through.
My prayers are with her. It’s never easy being pregnant, it’s never easy being pregnant when you are unwed, and it’s not going to be made any easier by having the National Enquirer on the case because of her mother’s new level of fame.

Of course the Palins have Family Values
lonebeagle Monday, September 1st at 12:56PM EDT (link)You obviously don’t know what “Family Values” are. Because their teenage daughter got pregnant doesn’t mean that the Palin family is lacking family and Christian values.
Don’t you understand ANYTHING about Christians? We’re ALL sinners! What you do when faced with sin or the sin of others determines what kind of person you truly are.
Kids have been falling in love and having sex before marriage forever. Liberals and most Democrats seem to believe that the solution to ALL unplanned and unwanted pregnancies is to end life.
A liberal would have had Bristol get an abortion and everything would be fine, as if she never conceived in the first place.
They wouldn’t have a single moral qualm with this and they would keep their facade of being “moral” people.
Christians and the Republican base will not condemn Sarah Palin for her daughter’s action that resulted in her pregnancy.
On the contrary, this will only confirm that Sarah Palin is a good woman and ethical person, complete with sins and imperfections.
If the boy has strong ethnic lineage (i.e., Eskimo)
Rod_Patrick Monday, September 1st at 12:57PM EDT (link)the marriage may work. The Eskimos have very strong family ties and traditionally believe in so-called “soulmates”. Sarah and Todd are actually high-school sweethearts.
My teenage daughters were pro-life before I was!
QueenOfCups Monday, September 1st at 12:58PM EDT (link)As a open minded 70s chick, I was a social liberal who always preached pro-choice to my daughters.
Each of them informed me that although they respected a woman’s right to choose, they themselves could NEVER bring themselves to murder their own child.
I think you will find that most young women today feel that way due to the sophistication of modern ultrasound techniques that are included in ROUTINE prenatal care at 10-12 weeks. No longer can women be sold the lie that a fetus is a mass of tissue. They can SEE for themselves it is a BABY.
And you know that they call those ultrasounds? Baby’s First Picture as it is happily put in their baby’s scrapbook.

Good grief-easy, built in babysitters?

I think you are putting your own spin onto this situation.
To be honest, if my teenage daughter did turn up pregnant I would do whatever I could to help her-even babysit her children if needed.
I know plenty of adults who had their children while adults that use their parents as baby sitters.
The reality here is a young girl is pregnant, and her family supports her and encourages her to do the right thing, and they view it as a blessing not a punishment.
Only if McCain wants a 50-0 defeat
civil_truth Monday, September 1st at 1:07PM EDT (link)That action would totally destroy McCain’s character and reason to run for President.

It's great she has supportive family
joebloe2008 Monday, September 1st at 1:10PM EDT (link)But lets remember all of those kids having kids who aren’t so lucky. Teenage pregnancy in America is epidemic. A majority of them do not have the family or economic resources that Ms Palin has. This new child will be born into a family that has the luxury of being excited. Too many girls that get pregnant are forced to get low-paying jobs which don’t even provide health benfits. This perpetuates a lifelong cycle of poverty and despair. All too often this child is then raised in an environment that leads them down the same path of either crime or other self-destructive behavior.
It's my first to say this: Are you n*ts?
Rod_Patrick Monday, September 1st at 1:11PM EDT (link)It’s not about her daughter? It’s about the Presidency of McCain. She introduced her family because she is telling us that this is another sacrifice she is willing to give for the sake of the American people.
That’s the message! Leadership is also about sacrifice, not just preparedness.
Wish I could agree
SIConservative Monday, September 1st at 1:12PM EDT (link)In terms of how so-cons will respond, I completely agree. Kids aren’t punishments and the abortion issue has nothing to do with judging mothers. Some libs might even resent Bristol not having an abortion. I just hope they’re dumb enough to say it.
Having said that, the problem here is with independents. It’s not an abortion issue or a values issue. For them, I expect that it will be a hypocrisy issue. To be sure, I’m not saying that I myself consider there to be anything hypocritical about the situation, but I expect that this will turn out to be a lesser version of the Foley scandal if the Democrats play their cards right. Of course, they’ll destroy themselves if they decide to attack her for giving birth. If they don’t, though, I expect that this will be sufficient to seal the deal for Obama on account of the perception of hypocrisy. I also expect it to cost us 1-2 Senate seats and a few House seats.
I could be wrong here, but the Republican brand is still in terrible shape and this won’t help it. It also doesn’t help that Palin has decided to embark on a national campaign to become VP at a time when her family needs her full attention. For the record, yes, I’d say the same if it were her husband running.
If Todd Palin

I'm worried about Palin
gerrygeez Monday, September 1st at 1:15PM EDT (link)I live in Anchorage and have been a big fan of Governor Palin. But I’m now very worried. Several news outlets today report that the McCain campaign didn’t vet Palin thoroughly including neglecting to review archives of her hometown’s newspaper, the Valley Frontiersman, which are not online. Nor did they speak with some key officials within Alaska’s government. Also, today, rumors are swirling in the state that one of our major newspapers will be breaking a story this week that Palin may be linked to an affair she has had with a former staffer. If she wasn’t vetted properly is there a chance some very unpleasant news about her is about to be unEarthed?

Here's what will happen
SATA_Interface Monday, September 1st at 1:17PM EDT (link)Someone in a GOP smoke filled room will make the decision to throw Palin under the bus. Probably Karl Rove. Pay attention to the man behind the curtain!
It's great she has supportive family
joebloe2008 Monday, September 1st at 1:18PM EDT (link)But lets remember all of those kids having kids who aren’t so lucky.

There is a life in there-a precious life.
I am not dumb enough to think my girls are going to listen to every single thing I tell them, and when it comes to love, sex and hormones, even if they internalize what I have taught them, I know their judgment may be clouded.
If/when it happens you make the best of it. Sarah doesn’t deserve a trip under the bus for this one-and honestly it makes her seem more real.
She is the anti elite.
Shouldn't she focus on her kids?
LA_Hike Monday, September 1st at 1:20PM EDT (link)This is so sad. Who is taking care of her children while she is off being Gov and VP candidate? Doesn’t she think raising children is important? In this day and age working mothers are a reality but she had a special-need child just five months ago!!! It is becoming apparent that maybe with her husband off working in the north fields and racing snowmobiles someone should be focused on the children. Sad.
And with the Rove reference, the mask slips.

Yes, absolutely
olderthangandalf Monday, September 1st at 1:25PM EDT (link)I don’t see whether it is the father or mother running that makes a difference. The point is that choosing to run, right now, was obviously going to impose a very high cost on this child.
I’m a dad, not a mom. I’ve turned down jobs because of what it would mean to my kids. My wife turned down promotions for the same reason. Lots of people have. It’s not a gender specific issue.
Yes it is.
itrytobenice Monday, September 1st at 1:26PM EDT (link)I’m working from the assumption that mom and dad have talked to the kids and discussed the need for their commitment to each other to be a lifetime. If the kids believe they are capable of making that commitment, they should absolutely get married now and set their minds to making it work.
We all know that marriage isn’t easy. But it wouldn’t be easy if they were 25 either. They need to make a decision and stick with it. And if they love each other and are having a baby together, they need to do it as husband and wife if at all possible.
The problem with America is stupidity. I’m not saying there should be capital punishment for stupidity, but why don’t we just take the safety labels off of everything and let the problem solve itself?
Maybe it's because our sexually permissive culture celebrates teen pregnancy
QueenOfCups Monday, September 1st at 1:26PM EDT (link)And features them on the cover of their magazine, the way they did Jamie Lynn Spears.
It’s awfully hard to convince teens of abstinence when pop culture celebrates it and makes it appear glamorous.

Hypocricy
salmc26 Monday, September 1st at 1:28PM EDT (link)my only concern, wouldnt palin be labeled as a hypocrite.its commendable that she is such a staunch pro life, she she is also such a staunch believer of abstinence only,so how can she say with a straight face that she supports a policy when she CANNOT even make her own daughter follow it.what does it say about the new champ of the right???
Palin did the right thing
Rottimer Monday, September 1st at 1:28PM EDT (link)Sarah Palin did the right thing by not abandoning her daughter in what will probably be the toughest time in her youth. I am struggling to see the hypocrisy argument
Just_Me Monday, September 1st at 1:28PM EDT (link)Having said that, the problem here is with independents.
But then the liberals often paint social cons with a position they do not hold, ad therefore cry hypocrisy based on that painting rather than the 3-D version.
I still don’t think it plays-even independants on this issue at least can relate.
You may be right that running for VP when she should be with her family might be a worthwhile argument, but one filled with a lot of landmines-especially for a party that has done a lot to anger feminists this year.

My first son was born 2 weeks after I turned 18. His mother was 17 at the time.
Its almost 4 years later now, and we’re married and have another child.
Although the fact that we had a child reflects on our poor judgement at the time, I’ve always said that it does NOT reflect on my parents in anyway, nor does it disqualify us (or, in this case, her) from doing anything in the future.
We had family support, and now do considerably well for ourselves. I hope the same can be said for this girl a few years from now.

olderthangandalf Monday, September 1st at 1:41PM EDT (link)This has absolutely nothing to do with abstinence only education.
The data is that unwanted pregnancies happen across the board at roughly the same rates. They happen to families that start teaching sex ed at age five, and to families that pursue the abstinence only approach. It happens in really solid, close families with inspiring values, and it happens in families that aren’t so admirable.
There is no excuse for anyone, left or right, trying to exploit this poor kid’s situation to argue one view or another of sex education.

Double Talk.....Double Standards!
antioxymoron Monday, September 1st at 1:45PM EDT (link)It is truly un-hip to be a hypocrite! Unfortunately for all you double talkers out there, spin only goes so far before the unraveling begins.
Quite convenient that in this situation, Bristol Palin becomes a heroine, and ascends to some type of noble divinity for getting knocked up. In reality she has become another statistic representing unmarried teen pregnancy; and further evidence that preaching abstinence wile neglecting to emphasize the importance of condoms and birth-control are ineffective.
If it were the daughters of Obama who were pregnant and unmarried at 17 (fast-forwarding their age 8-10 years), all of you double talkers would be relentless in the impunity of their character and upbringing. Give me a break!
Perhaps many of you should take this moment to wake up and smell the stench of ubiquitous lies that continue to be strung along. It is time for some critical thinking and objectivity for once. Ask yourself, how many pregnant women (speaking of Governor Palin) do you know that don’t show at 7 months (her staff didn’t even know)? Then after their water breaking, instead of going to a hospital (like a rational, concerned parent) they do something else; i.e. deliver a speech. Just doesn’t add up! Could this pregnancy be Bristol’s second? Hmmm, I wonder? It would make sense why Bristol was holding Trig so closely during her mothers acceptance speech. Is governor Palin even breastfeeding? All jokes aside, where are the witnesses? If this is yet another lie, shame on her for lying on her children and grandchildren.
Once again I ask, is the V.P. choice of Senator McCain in Palin (who has a ton of baggage being revealed just within the first five days) to fire up the base, or to set them on fire? Maybe he is tanking his own election?
I always thought he was spineless for not leaving the Grand Ole Party after the 2000 election when the disgusting smears about his Bangladeshi daughter were made by Rove and the Bush Camp. You remember the one about how she was a “black child” that was the product of an affair with a black prostitute. Speaking of his daughter, has anyone seen her this campaign season? Given the track record of how GOP’ers eat their own, I can understand why!
Maybe this is Mr. McCain’s version of sweet revenge; an Obama Presidency.

Its bad enough that her daughter is a sinner and a whore, but Sarah Palin is now trying to deflect this sinful behavior by trying to blame “liberal bloggers”! How about accepting responsibility. As Republicans we value taking personal responsibility. Palin’s attempt to deflect criticism of her daughter’s whorish behavior by blaming bloggers or Obama’s sorry supporters is unforgivable! Okay, here I am (sort of) defending Sarah Palin
ZootSuit Monday, September 1st at 1:52PM EDT (link)I must disagree. First of all, Bristol Palin is not running for Vice President; her mother Sarah Palin is. Bristol’s pregnancy is not going to affect her mother’s, or John McCain’s, electoral chances.
Moreover, although I still think John McCain should not have selected Sarah Palin, her daughter’s pregnancy is not one of them.
Where I do think there is a problem is in not announcing it — or rather, allude to it — at Palin’s introduction in Ohio. Since her daughter is marrying her child’s father, why not introduce her daughter Bristol and her fiance at the initial press conference?
The pregnancy was bound to get out; I am in no way excusing the hideous rumors started by the DailyKos crowd, but seriously, everyone involved knows that in this day and age, the news was going to get out sooner rather than later. Why not get ahead of the news?
The old political truism is that it is not the “crime” but the “cover-up” that’s the problem. Although I do not think her teenage daughter being pregnant is a “crime,” the way that the news came out does look bad in that it makes it seems like the McCain campaign was not ahead of the story. There should be no question whatsoever that the McCain campaign knew and realized that, quite frankly, it is not a story.

Rod_Patrick Monday, September 1st at 2:09PM EDT (link)BUT WE MISSED TWO POINTS:
Even for people in the “right age”, marriage has no guarantee to succeed. It’s up to the couple involved and there is no by-the-book formula. Let Bristol decide what she think is good for her.
On political front, we have also forgotten the real “political” issue against Palin. A scary authoritarian.
The issue of Bristol’s pregnancy has just proven that Palin has never used her own powers and authority for personal advantage. She could have easily used some of her Alaskan Guards to put surveillance and limit the freedom of her daughters, for Palin’s own personal political interests.
But no, Bristol has all the freedom in this world courtesy of her parents. Her pregnancy is a result of her own decisions in life as a young American.
This incident will put to rest Monegan’s claims that Sarah Palin is notorious in using her power for her own personal advantage.

Don't have them handy. Sorry.
olderthangandalf Monday, September 1st at 2:18PM EDT (link)Liberals are quick to claim that if only there were more sex ed teenage pregnancies wouldn’t happen. Some are jumping on this situation to toot that particular horn. (The secondary implication is that parents of teenage mothers and fathers could have prevented the pregnancies by buying condoms for their kids.)
In my opinion, this is booshwah. In my opinion, teenage pregnancies are not a function of education, whether it is technical how to do contraception education or moral why not to have unmarried sex education. Teenage pregnancies, in my opinion, are largely a function of raging hormones, and a reflection that people in the throes of passion don’t think all that clearly.
My recollection is that abstinence only education and tell it all sex education lead to statistically identical rates of teenage pregnancy, but I don’t have the studies handy.

STLwoman Monday, September 1st at 2:23PM EDT (link)Why wouldn’t the Palins support their daughter? Prisons are full of hardcore felons whose parents still love them.
No doubt the Palins have done their best to impart their values to their kids, but their daughter chose differently for
herself (and it isn’t as if she’s 12 years old). That’s not grounds for their casting her out into the darkness.
I give Gov. Palin bonus points for sticking by her convictions, instead of dragging her daughter off for an abortion, lest the pregnancy interfere with the Governor’s career.

They did the same thing to Cheney
BookLover Monday, September 1st at 2:27PM EDT (link)I found it reprehensible, to bring up the choices of the children. Children don’t always go in the way we would wish them to. It is no reason to toss them aside as if they aren’t ours. It is still possible to love a child even if they turn out differently than you would like. One of my daughters is gay. I love her just as much as I always have. I was glad she came out to me instead of hiding it from me like her girlfriend has to with her family. No, I don’t think we should just adopt an anything goes attitude, but we don’t have to stone people that make different choices either. Bristol is brave and so is her mom to stand by her instead of casting her aside.
For every solution there is a problem.
What's interesting is
olderthangandalf Monday, September 1st at 2:28PM EDT (link)what these trolls assume about what it means to be Christian.
Whatever the Christian response to this situation is, it will not include condemning this kid for making a mistake. At my church, at least, we are all sinners, and the one thing the Gospels teach us is not to condemn others who are ultimately no different from us.
The secular lefties have a need to impose a censorious, judgmental attitude on Christians, which just goes to show that they are not spending time with the kind of Christians I know.

As to Bristol Palin, she made a mistake. Guess what? She is a human being with free will, that makes her imperfect like us all. What’s important now he how she deals with it, and that she is right with God on the mistake.
Being right with God is really something only she and God can know. Dealing with it rightly is a matter of not compounding one mistake with another, and from what we know she appears to be dealing with this correctly. Other than that, anything else is speculation.

Teenage pregnancy. It is not the end of the world for those who make a mistake when young. Think Fred Thompson! He got married to his pregnant girlfriend when 16 I believe. He supported his wife and child, AND, worked his way through college and law school. The libs did the same thing to him when that news came out. I admired him more for it! He had responsibility!

olderthan(dirt)gandalf- I believe you sound more like Obama in saying that Bristols life will be sad, ugly and life scarring. It sounds as though you agree with Obama in that Bristol has been punished with a baby. You talk of all of your sacrifices in job promotions and etc. for the sake of your children. Obviously you never had the opportunity to become a great voice for our country, and to put all in proper perspective. Do you think for a moment that because Trig is challenged and because Bristol is pregnant that Sarah is a selfish power monger? Do you really live in a glass house with children that have never made any mistakes? You seem very quick to cast the first stone. Shame on you. Most people I know would have taken that promotion in order to provide a better life for their children, and I don’t mean bigger and better tech toys!

olderthangandalf Monday, September 1st at 2:45PM EDT (link)I think Bristol’s life for the next few months is going to be a lot harder than it would have been if the VP pick had not come into the picture. With her mother as governor, she still would have gotten some attention, but nothing like what is going to happen to her now, with the full weight of the international media on her.
I think that’s regrettable. Sarah Palin was serving in an important job, and had every reason to expect that if she turned this opportunity down other opportunities to serve at even higher levels would come along.
In my life, I have turned down opportunities, but in the expectation that others would come along. They did. My kids - who are most assuredly nothing like perfect - have had more than their share of material advantages, and hopefully with some of the choices we made we allowed them to keep other advantages. There is a point, you know, with power and money, where enough is enough, and more is not necessarily better, especially since more always comes at a price.
It may be that Sarah Palin felt that her destiny demanded that she take this nomination. It’s not necessarily that she made the wrong decision, but that she made one that, to me, looking from outside, not wearing their moccasins, not knowing nearly all the facts, looks like one most people would not have made. I think most people would have said, Not now. It perplexes me as I try to piece together what kind of person she really is, but, in the final analysis, what perplexes me counts for pretty much zero in the big picture.

Brave choice? And chastise Bristol? Huh?
KyleM75 Monday, September 1st at 3:08PM EDT (link)I’m sure my comment will get lost in the sea of responses here but I registered in order to say it.
How is it a “brave” choice for Bristol to have the baby? How is it a “choice” for her at all? I obviously cannot definitively say if Bristol shares her mother’s across-the-board pro-life stance but given what I know of her family’s beliefs, I can infer that her “choice” is as “brave” as me not murdering someone at random. This reminds me of the Chris Rock bit about praising celebrities for doing things they ought to be doing anyway.
(For the record, I’m compelled to say that even though I am a pro-choice liberal I am against abortion in all but extreme cases. Like others have said, there is always adoption and there are venues for this option that will even cover the medical costs of carrying and birthing the child.)
I am writing this response because it churns my stomach to think that there are actually people out there on your side of the fence that think all, most or any liberals are actively rooting for abortion. It’s incredulous. I understand over-blowing the other side’s views to differentiate your own - I see it across the board in politics - but this idea is beyond the pale.
The only hypocrisy I see here is that if Bristol was a seventeen year old inner-city woman working in a strip mall alongside her fiance, any and all assistance afforded her by a state or government program would be viewed as a hand out by most conservatives and held up as an example of the welfare state or an entitlement mindset. Just saying. If someone would like to contradict that, please do.
I do think Bristol’s situation is a little humorous though. I hope the baby is reared in a loving home and gets all the opportunity it deserves for a prosperous and healthy life, but is this a real good example of the efficacy of the abstinence-only education her mom supports? Or the “non-stance” FFL has on contraception?
Sex before marriage
SIConservative Monday, September 1st at 3:08PM EDT (link)There’s where the hypocrisy would come in. As I said above, it’s a matter of perception. Many Christians and conservatives speak out against it.
Don’t get me wrong. I have no interest in calling out any individuals for their legal behavior, and I certainly don’t think that journalists or anyone else should be prying into the life of a 17-year old who isn’t running for anything. Unfortunately, though, they will. Although true Christians judge sins not sinners, the reality is that the media and many non-Christians are either too dumb or too lazy to notice the difference. That laziness and ignorance could move a small but very significant percentage of voters, especially those who were still wary that McCain was really different from the Republicans they booted two years ago.

noufa Monday, September 1st at 3:14PM EDT (link)My initial reaction was similar to yours. Will probably offend someone with this comment but here goes:
Although she’s not yet legally an adult, it seems that Bristol is taking responsibility for the situation. No doubt the Palins want to protect their children. At same point, what’s best for the children involves letting them grow up and make adult decisions.
Track is about to serve in Iraq. They must realize that there is a possibility of him coming home in a flag-draped coffin. Has Track has felt extra pressure to serve his country because of his parent’s political ambition?
Maybe.
Doesn’t mean the Palins step down from public life so that Track can make a decision to serve without the pressure of public scrutiny.
Just tossing that out there. For the sake of full disclosure, I was not thrilled by the pick of Palin. While pointing out Obama’s inexperience works as a political tactic, that doesn’t change the fact that Palin is a greenhorn.
My prayers are with her family, too.

People forego political races all the time for personal reasons. Colin Powell, to cite one well known example, didn’t run in 1996 or 2000 because his wife strenuously opposed it. I believe if you dig back through the last several cycles, you will find people mooted as possible candidates for President or VP who didn’t go for it because of stated personal reasons. Love that the thread has the word "CHOICE" in it
Northeasterner Monday, September 1st at 3:28PM EDT (link)So she made a choice. Isn’t that exactly what many liberals want?
Sarah Palin has said that she made the choice to keep her Down Syndrome child. Essentially, she should be thankful to those liberals that fought for that choice. Being pro-choice isn’t pro-death, it’s CHOICE. Sarah made her decision, and chose life. Good for her. Others want to be able to have a CHOICE, too.
The fact that she would want Bristol to raise a child, even if she were raped, well that’s just downright disgusting. It’s not her child (is it?), so it should be her daughter’s CHOICE.
Thanks Brian

Apparently
zuiko Monday, September 1st at 3:34PM EDT (link)A 17 year old girl has a “right to privacy” only if she isn’t related to someone the Left is trying to take down for their own political gain.
Really none of this is any of our business… the only reason it was necessary to come out with it publicly was the ridiculous “fake pregnancy” stuff.
This 17 year old girl is not running for anything. She should not be the subject of attacks by the Left any more than Chelsea should have been targeted by the Right (and with the exception of some inappropriate jokes by a few people, she wasn’t).
I have a lot of sympathy for this girl because everyone makes some stupid mistakes when they are young adults, but by virtue of who her mother is her error in judgment is being picked apart across the country. That is not something a 17 year old should really have to deal with.
I guess that just goes to show that the Left doesn’t much care about a woman’s “right to privacy” as they pretend they do.

FBI Background Check
olderthangandalf Monday, September 1st at 3:35PM EDT (link)This is an interesting point.
There are FBI background checks, and FBI background checks. At one level, they just verify that you don’t have a criminal record, aren’t wanted on any outstanding fugitive warrants, and are not on any list of known security risks (this level would probably flag William Ayers, for example, but not Barack Obama). At another level, they really dig into who you are, talking to your neighbors, former neighbors, elementary school teachers, etc., to find out if you are indeed the kind of guy they want carrying the nuclear football next to the President.
I doubt very much that she got the second kind. If, indeed, the McCain campaign has the FBI doing its political vetting, it would be both very unusual, strategically unwise (as in, who knows what the politics and loyalties of the given agents are), and arguably an improper use of public funds given that she’s a ways away from being a federal official and that the vetting needs to be politically attuned. If it was the first type, it would be proper, but it’s not the kind of check you want for a potential VP candidate.
None of which goes to whether she was adequately vetted or not, because I have no idea whatsoever what was done or not done.

They will probably use Bristol’s teenage pregnancy as anecdotal evidence that abstinence-only education doesn’t work. Combined with the factual evidence that abstinence-only does more harm than good, they will paint this tried and true conservative plank as a rotting timber in the bottom of our longboat.
Damn them and their hypocrisy! If Bristol were one of their own and the shoe was on the other foot, they would probably arrest Bristol’s boyfriend for statutory rape rather than celebrating the teen union at a traditional shotgun wedding the way it should be done in a red state like Alaska.

My opinion of Gov. Palin only improves with this.
Elizabeth Monday, September 1st at 3:51PM EDT (link)I continue to be impressed with the lady I hope to be the future Vice President of the United States.
People accuse Gov. Palin of being utterly unprepared to face the challenges of national office. There has particularly been a lot of “concern” expressed over her ability to stand up to the Putins and Ahmadinejads of the world. I ask you, how many of us would have the courage, after developing a reputation for preaching abstinence only education and strong family values and then being selected for the national ticket of the “values” political party, to stand before the whole world and acknowledge the behavior of and announce our support for a child whose choices haven’t lived up to our ideals? I think in all honesty the temptation of most people would be to try to hide it. (Although, I can think of one other, namely the current V.P.) I think this willingness to live openly “in the light” is indicative of a type of courage that is rare, even within the church. I think it is the type of courage that lends credence to Sarah Palin’s reputation as a reformer. People who live with a constant fear of being “found out” are severely crippled in any attempt to reform anything.
Furthermore, Gov. Palin’s response to her daughter’s poor choice speaks volumes about her integrity and her solid conservative values. As many have pointed out here, it further emphasizes her commitment to life. However, something that few have noted is her demonstrated commitment to personal responsibility. While assuring her daughter and future son-in-law of the family’s unconditional love and support, she also makes it clear that she expects them to take responsibility for the choices they’ve made. She expects them to “grow up” and “face the responsibilities of adulthood”.
Contrast this with how Barack Obama has said he would respond should one of his daughters face a similar situation: “if they make a mistake, I don’t want them punished with a baby”. Daddy’s urge would be to step in and absolve his child of any responsibility and any consequences for her action. I think, unspoken in this response (and maybe I’m being unfair), is the implication that one should hide the mistake.
I don’t know how Sarah Palin would respond if she had to go toe-to-toe with a nasty dictator. But I’d lay better odds on the success of someone who has demonstrated a willingness to face public criticism and NOT shield her children from the consequences of their actions than a person whose fears for his children’s futures would prevent him from encouraging them to grow up.

zuiko Monday, September 1st at 3:53PM EDT (link)It is a chance to serve your country. I can see a major difference there. Serving your country is an honorable and worthy thing to do even if it means a great deal of sacrifice. Making $10k a year more? Not so much. I’m sure she discussed this with her family before accepting it and they all were aware of what might be entailed.
It’s unfortunate that her 17 year old daughter had to get dragged into this, but it will be all played out in a week. Perhaps that was a sacrifice her daughter was willing to make?

QueenOfCups Monday, September 1st at 4:07PM EDT (link)Given the voting records of the politicians and the ferocity of the activists on your side of the aisle for no holds barred (including infancide)combined with the appalling number of abortions (over a million) performed each year make it pretty clear the leftist value of life. Especially when they trot out the old chestnut that they want abortions “safe and rare” and yet object to showing women considering abortion an ultrasound so they can make an informed decision that concerns life and death. It makes them look to be insincere about their intentions. They are really about genocide of the underclass. If you believe otherwise, you should look into where the majority of abortion clinics are placed.

Rod_Patrick Monday, September 1st at 4:10PM EDT (link)I just hope that my 2-year old daughter shall be at least 20 before all these issues come to confront my family. She’s so cute and like an angel. But if things don’t work out like I want then to be, I will surely follow Palins’ decision on this: Allow my daughter to decide what she thinks best for her. My wife and I will guide her until she can already stand on her own.
I’m learning so much on this diary.

I approached sex ed with my kids differently
QueenOfCups Monday, September 1st at 4:20PM EDT (link)I recommended abstinence not because of the pregancy and disease factors, but I approached it as a power issue.
I explained that engaging in sex with someone makes you more emotionally attached and therefore more vulnerable to them. It’s like giving someone power over you. And that they needed to make sure they knew the character of the person they were going to let themselves be vulnerable to.
This worked. They saw their friends be emotionally distraught over breakups and way too attached to boyfriends who did not treat them well. They gave of themselves as they were given to. They entered the serious dating world much later than their age mates. And they are beautiful women. I was pretty surprised, actually.

Rod_Patrick Monday, September 1st at 4:40PM EDT (link)First, it’s free! LOL! Second, I think you are right. I understand where you are coming from because of my own experience as a “man”. Definitely, this issue of pre-marital sex , as you say, has something to do with “power” over the “weaker” (no pun intended) gender. And teenage girls should understand this.
But I admired you most in your other comment below. Instead of punishing the confused teenage girl, under such circumstances, full support and understanding of the parents are really necessary. The hypocrisy of the “society” against her is a punishment already. Only the love of the parents (like what you did) could save the girl’s life.
Strange too.

BEN, I THINK IT'S REALLY A GRAND DESIGN WITH BO AS THE MASTERMIND..
Rod_Patrick Monday, September 1st at 4:53PM EDT (link)Given all the trolls are purposely coming here to check our reactions to the issue, I think Barack is really the mastermind of this grand design to discredit Palin in a most unnatural and inhuman way.
Somehow the far left knew this story all along. First, they explicitly disseminated the lie that Trig is actually son of Bristol, not Sarah to paint Sarah as a hypocritical conservative. Now, that Bristol’s story is out, all the trolls are prepared to attack Sarah as a bad mother.
If my recollection is right, someone here at RS said that they have a plan to “out” Sarah as *unfaithful wife *to Todd in an Alaskan newspaper.
Along the middle, *Barack is washing his hands to remind his mad dogs *of “don’t attack on personal matters”.
THIS IS TRULY A DEMONIC WAY OF ATTACKING A CANDIDATE. This is exactly what Cliff Kincaid is saying about the Chicago tactic of the far left.

Everybody makes mistakes. What matters is what people do as the result of the mistake. Some people choose to compound them. Others recognize them as an opportunity to make life better.
Pluto, the Ninth Planet - Forever!
I am pro-choice. But that means...
Moriah Monday, September 1st at 5:47PM EDT (link)… respecting choices like the one that Bristol made to continue her pregnancy and keep her baby. Even if her decision to have premarital sex wasn’t the best decision on the planet, especially given her age and the difficulties she will now face with trying to balance parenthood with finishing high school (and hopefully college), she did make her choice about what she wanted to do.
Any person who is pro-choice must respect and support that decision at least as much as they support the right for a pregnant woman to make another decision.
Now, I can kind of, sort of, halfway, maybe, understand the idea that a person may not wish to glamorize teen pregnancy, or encourage premarital sex.
But calling her behavior “whorish” — woah.
I’m very glad the person who said that appears to be a troll, although I am sad that they would say that even while trolling.
The point about respecting Bristol’s decision to continue her pregnancy and to keep her baby is not to glamorize or encourage teens to engage in sexual activity. If she’s going to be a role model to women, it will be that yes, she made a mistake, but she did what she believed was the right thing when that mistake resulted in a new life being created — and since she has decided to keep her baby instead of giving it up for adoption, she obviously feels that the new life will be a blessing for her and give her joy, even if she may regret starting that life while she herself is so young.
If the father of her child plans to marry her, it seems like he also sees this new life as a blessing — and I wish nothing but the absolute best for both of them through what will be a difficult and trying situation. (Having a baby and being a parent even when you are married and planned to have a child is challenging.)
I am glad that Sarah and Todd fully support their daughter’s decision, because having a baby so young is even more difficult when you do not have the support of your loved ones.
And I think the media should leave the story alone, as Bristol is not running for public office.
A relative of mine’s daughter (I think she is my fourth cousin, but I’m not sure if that’s actually the correct way the familial relationship would be classified — I call her my cousin though) got pregnant a few years ago. She was still in high school.
She talked with her mother and her grandmother, and said she wanted to keep her baby and get married. However, her mother and grandmother felt it would be better for them not to get married so young — mainly because the father was also still in high school. So they talked with his parents, and all of them agreed that the most important thing was that both of them were able to finish school and go to college.
So her grandmother, who is retired, is taking care of her great-granddaughter now during the day. My cousin is going to college in the town nearby and is staying with her grandmother as well. She is still in love with the father of her child, and they are now engaged — although they plan to wait until they both finish college to get married. He stays at her grandmother’s house as often as his own, and loves his daughter dearly. And because they both had the support of their families, they have been able to continue with their education and still raise their daughter.
Being pro-choice should be exactly that — being willing to support and love a person no matter what choice they make, especially when they decide that the best choice is to raise their child.
Blessings,
Moriah

I have been appalled at Sen. McCain’s choice since he made it. But setting aside the fact that Gov. Palin is not fit to be the Leader of the Free World should anything happen to Pres. McCain, I think the last thing we want to do is talk about how brave the Palins are. Apparently Gov. Palin’s oldest daughter is now engaged to her boyfriend of 3 years and he is 10 years her senior. I think the Libs are going to have a field day with the fact that Gov. Palin let her 13 year old daughter date a 23 year old man. What did people think was going to happen?
Unless this is an Alaska thing.
Is it too late for Gov. Palin to step down for family reasons and for Sen. McCain to pick Gov. Jindal or Mitt Romney?

Rod_Patrick Monday, September 1st at 9:31PM EDT (link)Next, how can we judge the character of the 23-year old man?
How do we know that Bristol and her BF don’t want their unborn child (i.e., it accidentally happened?)
But you mentioned another ignorance on our part: Do we really know the ethnic culture of the Palins? We might be attacking a tradition that is too Alaskan for Palins.
I think it is wrong to go into that line because we have nothing to offer but speculation.

Yeah, but.....
TheAdmiral Monday, September 1st at 11:24PM EDT (link)I’ll be the first to commend the Palin’s on the way they handled the situation regarding the (no brainer) decision regarding Trig and their words today regarding Bristol’s pregnancy. Unconditional love and support is exactly what their daughter needs right now. This should be a strictly private family matter. But in today’s age of the biased MSM, the DailyKooks, instant information, etc…this situation should have been handled better from the McCain camp. Surely they had to know about this and in retrospect, I think it should have been included in Friday’s coming out party. But to me, personally, this has just taken the wind out of my sails politically. It just smacks of trying to cover something up, esp. in light of those disgusting rumors on the Kook site. Bristol’s pregnancy was bound to come out at some point in the campaign so why delay? Because you had to respond to the filth being spewed from the Kossites? This whole episode, personal/family matters or not, should have be handled in a more pro-active way.
We’re in the fight of our lives to keep from this country from electing a freaking Marxist as POTUS. The McCain camp knew about this ahead of time and chose to release this information today…Labor Day, when we’re all at the pool, or at a cookout, or thinking about those in the path of Gustav. Today was even a more opportune day than a Friday afternoon to try and bury or minimize the impact of a story. The McCain camp has been brilliant in being pro-active about just about everything…until now. I sincerely hope I’m in the minority in my reaction because I think Gov. Palin and her pragmatic, country-first conservatism are just what this country needs. I just have a gut feeling that this will not sit well with the middle 20% swing voter group. I hope I’m wrong.
Don’t get me wrong. I will still vote for the McCain/Palin ticket and the noseplugs are still put away……for now.

Extreme cases
KyleM75 Monday, September 1st at 11:54PM EDT (link)I understand that you have a very firm position on abortion and I respect that. I am not trying to change your mind and I am not trying to justify my position to you. I am not trolling for attention and I’m not trying to rile anyone up. I didn’t intend for any of that in my post.
The points of my response were 1.) given that the Palins are very strongly pro-life, how was the decision to carry the baby to term a choice for her? It is a non-issue not to be debated. And doing what you’re supposed to do isn’t “brave.” It’s doing what you’re supposed to do. And 2.) liberals don’t like abortion. As I said in my post, I am against it in all but extreme cases. Again, I’m not trying to rationalize myself to you or provoke (in these three posts I have learned that even that language can be construed as incendiary around here even though I don’t mean for it to be so) — I am simply saying that, unlike what a few posters have said, liberals aren’t actively rooting for an abortion.
I get that this site receives a large number of knee-jerk response-seeking trolls. I am not one of them. I’ve read this site for a while now because it’s the best conservative blog out there and the majority of posts come from a rational place, even though I usually disagree with them. I registered because having the baby wasn’t a matter of choice for her and doing what you’re supposed to do isn’t brave.
You know...
KyleM75 Tuesday, September 2nd at 12:01AM EDT (link)In re-reading what I posted I don’t see how it can be construed as a rationalization for abortion.

Especially the second part, adding in the wedding. Did you notice the terminology “about 5 months” the “about” term struck me the wrong way. Also why even give a months date. If rebutting was the goal they could have done that without disclosing the pregnancy.
Hopefully our gut is wrong here.

Why are "Pro-life" supporters proud of Palin?
daveplays Tuesday, September 2nd at 4:01PM EDT (link)I have a real question: Why are “Pro-life” supporters proud of Palin for sticking with her beliefs and having Her child with down syndrome even though She new of the child’s troubles. Are you kidding? You are proud Palin had the child? Proud of her . . . CHOICE! Wow. So am I! I am also very proud that she had that CHOICE! You can’t give credit for not doing something that you firmly believe SHOULD BE ILLEGAL! If she picked the other option wouldn’t they think she should volunteer to spend time in jail for her crime of murder? Are you proud of her for not speeding or not robbing her neighbors. You can’t be proud of someone for making a choice when you are actively seeking to eliminate the choice as an option. Example: If date rape was not illegal and I thought, as I do, it should be. I wouldn’t be proud of someone that didn’t date rape someone. It is just obvious. In the same light, I am not proud of someone for not being racist or for someone being tolerant of others. It is obvious.
I can only think this shows me that some “Pro Lifers” really just think people should make the choice to have the child and do not real believe what they are saying. Otherwise this argument would be obvious and you wouldn’t see it as brave choice but obvious one. She would have the child and any even thought about aborting the pregnancy would be wrong.
I on the other hand, I have every right to be proud of her making that difficult CHOICE and I hope it work out best for all of them. I real do! I am also very proud of the country that protects and continues the fight for Palin’s and other woman’s right to make that CHOICE.
If a someone says they are proud, have great respect or solute her choice call them out as the pro choice person they are.
“I am proud of her choice and proud we haven’t taken away her right to make it.”
She on the other hand has no right to say she even had a choice if she is actively trying to take away the choice from others.
I really hope for some intelligent responses.

MrMosis Tuesday, September 2nd at 4:33PM EDT (link)A game of spin and twist I think.
Generally, the pro-lifers you speak of are probably more so proud in the sense of being “proud” to be an American. Or proud of their son or daughter doing well in school.
They are proud to have a woman who has lived this life of hers and made the choices she has made, and now to have her on the national stage… In front of the nation, in front of the world. She be representin’. It’s a sense of accomplishment. Geez…
