Pete Wehner on the Challenge of Obama

Plenty of late-breaking thoughts on the first debate around the sphere today, including my own minor submissions. But the one that’s worth your time to read is Pete Wehner’s thought process on the overall challenges the McCain campaign faces – here’s his third point, but you should read it all over at Commentary: What helps a campaign immeasurably is when the charge it makes seems | Read More »

Obama Campaign Purposefully Edits Blunt on McCain

I’m no fan of Congressman Roy Blunt, but purposefully lying about what any Congressman says is pretty low, especially when it’s of the “let’s cut out the first four words and last eight words of this television quote to make it seem like he’s saying the opposite of what he just said” variety. Which happens to be what the Obama campaign just did: REP. ROY | Read More »

    The Values Voters Gather

Note: Head on over to FRCAction to view streaming video of this weekend’s conference. You want proof about how successful the Sarah Palin pick has been in coalescing and motivating the socially conservative base of the GOP? Look no further than the subdued schedule today at the FRCAction Values Voter conference in Washington, DC. A year ago, the Family Research Council’s Values Voter Summit propelled | Read More »

Sully doesn’t stop, he just keeps on digging

I wrote about Andrew Sullivan’s descent into madness here. But Sullivan shows no signs of stopping even as his colleagues at The Atlantic recoil in horror. In fact, he keeps digging a deeper hole, now claiming that what happened to John Edwards was a different issue entirely because he wasn’t running for president any more, but Sullivan’s own baseless and profoundly insulting attacks on Sarah | Read More »

    Andrew Sullivan’s Descent into Madness

Yesterday Moe and I with his colleagues in respected corners of the news media who had disparaged Sarah Palin, relying on the rantings from the foulest corners of the blogosphere as the basis for their articles. Douthat’s disappointment – along with that of his colleagues McArdle and Goldberg – turned slowly into outrage over the course of the day, as it became clear that much | Read More »

Sarah Palin’s Bio Vid and McCain’s Voiceover Choices

Here’s tonight’s biopic video of Sarah Palin. It’s all right, I guess – but the voice seems off. I think it’s John Voight, who’s been around here a bit as a supporter of McCain. It’s funny: in the McCain set up, Robert Duvall is the patriotic video voice, Voight the inspirational video voice, and Powers Boothe is the “Be afraid. Be very afraid. Vote McCain. | Read More »

    Barack Obama vs. Sarah Palin

“My understanding is that Gov. Palin’s town, Wassilla, has I think 50 employees. We’ve got 2500 in this campaign. I think their budget is maybe 12 million dollars a year – [my campaign has] a budget of about three times that just for the month.” “This is a man who can give an entire speech about the wars America is fighting, and never use the | Read More »

    Bristol Palin’s Brave Choice

Well, that’s one way to rebut a rumor. The 17-year-old daughter of Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin is pregnant, Palin said on Monday in an announcement intended to knock down rumors by liberal bloggers that Palin faked her own pregnancy to cover up for her child. Bristol Palin, one of Alaska Gov. Palin’s five children with her husband, Todd, is about five months pregnant | Read More »

    Quick Thoughts on Palin

Wow, what a coup by McCain. I didn’t know he had it in him. Following on Jonah’s heels: Sarah Palin makes this election about three things for John McCain: -Energy: She’s our best spokesperson on this issue, hands down. -Life: She’s HARDCORE pro-life, and she’s lived it – as we all know, giving birth to a Down’s Syndrome child. -The War: Palin’s eldest son enlisted | Read More »

    It’s Palin!

10 Quick Thoughts on Tim Pawlenty as Veep Nominee

Yawn. Smallest upside. Smallest downside. What a difference two years makes for Pawlenty. To go from winning reelection in 2006 by 1% – aided by an embarrassing outburst from his opponent five days before the election – to the Vice Presidential nomination is a big jump. That said, Pawlenty is a capable executive, has a nice blue collar background (slightly inflated by the Sam’s Club | Read More »

    re: Lieberman

I’m prepared to support Lieberman as the choice over some of the alternatives. The advantage of Lieberman is that he goes away after four years – there’s no chance he’s contending for the presidency. This makes him have a higher upside than any of the other potential pro-choice selections – KBH (I turned it down six times! SIX TIMES!), Meg Whitman, Ridge, etc.

Rove Wants McCain to Pick Lieberman

What’s that, you say? You heard the opposite? Well, then you don’t know Karl Rove. “Rove called Lieberman,” recounted a second source. “Lieberman told him he would not make that call.” … “Rove is pushing Romney so aggressively some folks are beginning to wonder what’s going on,” grumbled one veteran Republican strategist. Rove is very astute about the way his public persona is perceived. So | Read More »

Barack Obama on ESPN – McCain staff, return those calls

ESPN’s sitdown with Barack Obama is outlined in full by Awful Announcing, hands down the best sports TV blog there is. It seems awfully brief and fluff-filled, as if the Worldwide Leader was very uncomfortable with asking any tough questions. C’mon, folks – Al Gore and Jack Kemp had to answer questions about Roberto Alomar spitting in an umpire’s face in a Vice Presidential debate! | Read More »

Friday in August: One Last Veep Speculation Thread

Well, now that Barack Obama is calling the unlucky ones, we’re running out of time to do the last fun speculation thing prior to the election, and I still haven’t thrown up a post of significance about all this. So here goes. On Obama’s side, it seemed clear from the beginning that he was going to bollix this choice. It tends to prove the old | Read More »

Andrew Sullivan Flunks a Rorschach Test

Andrew Sullivan, fresh off of bending the truth to mean whatever he’d like it to mean about his pre-Iraq position on the war, writes today to accuse John and Cindy McCain of embellishing a very personal story in a crass attempt to achieve political gain with evangelicals. Part of the McCain Celebrity, as packaged for the evangelical base, is the rescue of two Bangladeshi girls | Read More »

Old Dominion Polling Update: Virginia’s Swing State Status

The latest Survey USA poll of Virginia is getting a bit of attention today, as it shows Barack Obama to still be statistically tied with John McCain in the state – McCain 48, Obama 47, as befits a swing state. The full poll is here. And here’s a little analysis of the situation.

It’s Not Going to be Jindal

Despite Rick Moran’s hopes, and those of others here at RS, Gov. Bobby Jindal reiterated that he will not be John McCain’s Veep choice. “Let me be clear: I have said in every private and public conversation, I’ve got the job that I want. And I’ll say again on air: I’m not going to be the vice presidential nominee or vice president. I’m going to | Read More »
