TSA Exempt from Scanners?

Since the TSA screening agents and supervisors are at and inside the security perimeter at airports, shouldn’t THEY be subjected to the same screening process as anyone else entering the security perimeter?  All you need is one TSA agent who is a sleeper cell to bring something dangerous into the security zone and to pass it along to a cell confederate who has already cleared security.

It this security process is so important, than surely the TSA agents themselves should be subjected to the same invasive search.  Logic dictates that this be done.  The ball’s in your court Pistole.

O’Donnell and Witchcraft?

I’m agnostic at best, but what’s the big deal anyway?

After all Wicca is a recognized religion by the United States.

The Department of Veteran’s Affairs even permits placement of the Wiccan Pentacle on the headstones of veterans.

Isn’t freedom of religion still part of the Constitution? You know, that thing that all elected officials swear to uphold?

If this were a Democrat candidate there would be a firestorm of condemnation for these scare tactics.

Obama forcefully endorses the mosque at Ground Zero

Tonight the Commander in Chief has endorsed the Ground Zero mosque project.  From AP:

“As a citizen, and as president, I believe that Muslims have the same right to practice their religion as everyone else in this country,” Obama said, weighing in for the first time on a controversy that has riven New York City and the nation.

“That includes the right to build a place of worship and a community center on private property in lower Manhattan, in accordance with local laws and ordinances,” he said. “This is America, and our commitment to religious freedom must be unshakable.”

Obama made the comments at an annual dinner in the White House State Dining Room celebrating the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.

I wonder if he cut a check to Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf, for the upcoming fund raising junket to the Middle East, at the Ramadan dinner.

At the next protest I think I’ll wear my old, partially-melted work boots that are covered with a a veneer of toxic chemicals and the dust of human cremains.

Surrender in the War on Recession

I know Joe “Gaffe” Biden is the gift that keeps on giving, but this latest comment once again peels back the view at the top regarding America recovering its economic power and status.  It certainly feeds into leftist goals to have a permanent underclass reliant upon the government plantation for their sustenance.

According to CBS News, today Biden stated at a Russ Feingold fundraiser in Milwaukee:

there’s no possibility to restore 8 million jobs lost in the Great Recession.

Of course, the obligatory Blame Bush Disclaimer (BBD) was included in the Veep’s comments:

We inherited a godawful mess,” he said, adding there was “no way to regenerate $3 trillion that was lost. Not misplaced, lost.”

I wonder if Biden will be taken to the woodshed like a certain General for undermining confidence in the administration’s publicly-stated strategies!

A Tale of Two Countries – Latin American Style

It appears that Honduras has managed to stand down the pressure from the Obama administration, Hugo Chavez, the United Nations and a host of leftists demanding the return of ousted leader Manuel Zelaya, who was kicked-out of office for violating the Honduran constitution in his attempt to repeal term limits for himself (if only he had Mike Bloomberg’s dough).

The NY Times is reporting that Honduran conservative candidate Porfirio Lobo “appears headed for victory” in Sunday’s vote. Still Honduras faces a cold shoulder from the world.

Washington shifted position this month and broke with Latin America when it said that it was likely to recognize the election results despite the failure to restore Mr. Zelaya before the vote. Only Costa Rica and Panama have followed suit.

Brazil and much of South America have refused to accept the election.

According to the Times, “the Organization of American States, the Carter Center and the European Union did not send observers. The United Nations withheld election support.” Apparently, election oversight is only worthwhile for validating leftist victories.

Mr. Lobo ran a campaign around the slogan “Change, now.” Gotta love it.

Further south, Uruguay also held a presidential election on Sunday. This one was won by José Mujica, who the Times fawningly reports is “a brash former guerrilla fighter.” Like Honduras, Uruguay’s constitution prohibits a president from running for reelection. As a result, the current president, Tabaré Vázquez, could not run. This was no problem though.

With an ironclad hold on the electorate, the Uruguay left was not afraid to run a new candidate, in this case Mr. Mujica, one of the founders of the Tupamero movement, which waged a violent terrorist civil war on Uruguay in the ’60′s and ’70′s.

So apparently for the left in Latin America, if there is a real contest, screw the constitution, à la Zelaya in Honduras. If there is no contest, hooray for the constitution, à la Uruguay .

It Comes Around on David Letterman

According to breaking news around the fourth estate, David Letterman has apparently been engaging in numerous sexual relationships with staff members, while he was living with his now-wife Regina Lasko.  The admission was made while taping tonight’s The Late Show.

The story broke due to an extortion attempt against the so-called comedian, where 2 million dollars was demanded to prevent the outing of the history of sexual hijinks.  Letterman coordinated his response with the Manhattan District Attorney, leading to an arrest and his own grand jury testimony today.

It has not been revealed whether or not any of the female staff members were teenage interns working at his production.  It is also unknown if any of the reported liaisons occurred at Yankee Stadium. Perhaps time will tell.

Ain’t Karma a bitch?

Race-baiting Florida Trial Lawyers Play Dirty Tricks on Republican Primary

This latest left-wing, racist ploy comes to us courtesy of the Florida Justice Association. which is the trial lawyers association in the Sunshine State. Unsurprisingly, the FJA overwhelmingly supported the candidacy of Barrack Obama and supports liberal positions generally.

According to the St. Petersburg Times, the FJA has admitted, via a mea culpa from its leader Scott Carruthers, that the group is responsible for improperly interfering with the Republican primary for the 8th Senate District in Florida.

“Morally and politically, it was indefensible,” said Scott Carruthers, executive director of the Florida Justice Association, the trial bar group, who said its leaders had no knowledge of it. “I accept full responsibility for not having done everything to stop that piece from going out.”

“That piece” would be a flyer mailed-out to district residents about the primary. The flyer purports to be from a bogus right-wing group called the Conservative Voters’ Coalition, which was registered as a 527 organization for this dirty trick and to operate as a front group for the trial lawyers organization.

The flyer itself is a controversial piece of patently obvious, race-baiting excrement that is so over the top, it rivals the ACORN pimp exposure. The difference between the two is that the latter was a journalistic investigation, while the former was conducted by lawyers sworn to uphold the law and designed to interfere with the voting rights of American citizens. According to the St. Petersburg Times, a second 527 group, Conservative Citizens for Justice, which is aligned with the trial lawyers paid for the mailing.

Here’s the flyer:
Fl Dirty Trick 1
Fl Dirty Trick 2

This scheme was reportedly organized by a trial lawyer named David Ramba and Leon County Democrat, Erin Di Cesare, who is also an FSU professor. The Florida Democrat Party has condemned the flyer. James A. Greer, Chairman of the Republican Party of Florida has also condemned the flyer and published a letter to Cesare regarding the apparently illegal use of Republican party symbols on this political flyer.

In addition to putting out execrable political material designed to appear to be from Republicans, there are various issues that need to be examined.

Florida law may have been violated, as referenced in Greer’s letter. There may have also been improper transfers of money between the two fake conservative 527 groups, which has been reported as being around $69 thousand to pay for the mailing. Additionally, the flyer directs concerned voters to return an attached postcard to the Conservative Voters’ Coalition in order to request an absentee ballot. This may have resulted in people who actually needed a real absentee ballot being tricked into losing their right to vote via this fake process. Moreover, returned postcards provide this left wing dirty trick operation with the names and addresses of conservative voters, which may have been placed into some sort of database for unknown purposes. Finally, the involvement of officers of the court, lawyers, in these legally questionable activities is highly disturbing.

An investigation must be conducted to determine if Mr. Ramba, or other lawyers broke laws…disbarment should be also considered. Likewise, Florida State University should reconsider the employment of the ethically challenged Ms. Cesare.

Hanging chads anyone?

Obama, Robert Gibbs and Law Enforcement

One can’t help but look at what is said versus what is done and see that the thematic framework of the Obama administration is to just simply say things they believe people want to hear, regardless of the reality of any policy actions. The Health Care speech this week is but one example. It repeatedly reminds me of a scene from the 1981 Warren Beatty directed bio of radical journalist John Reed. In the scene, Grigory Zinoviev (played by Jerzy Kosinski) is rallying the masses in the Muslim southern area of Russia. Reed believing that a particular speech is extolling the revolution and Marxist ideals is stunned to find that Zinoviev instead is rallying them with Islamic slogans. Say what they want to hear to get them on your side, then do what you really want to do.

This was illustrated again in the aftermath of the stupidly scheduled Coast Guard exercise in Washington during 9/11 ceremonies, which was blown out of proportion by CNN and its incompetent concern for historical journalistic standards. Gibbs correctly slammed CNN’s professionalism, however he pooh-poohed any criticism of the scheduling of the Coast Guard exercise with the following statement:

The White House spokesman said the Commander-in-Chief would not “micromanage” the Coast Guard’s decision to hold the exercise, and he chastised the press — in honor of those who died on 9/11 and the future victims of terrorism — telling reporters to tell themselves “We may not get this first, but we may be the first ones to get it right.”

Asked if 9/11 was an appropriate day for such a training exercise, Gibbs said, “I tend not to question law enforcement trying to keep the nation safe.”

One can’t help but compare this statement with the actual actions of the administration.

The President notoriously slandered Sgt. James Crowley of the Cambridge PD for having the temerity to investigate a call of a possible burglary in progress. Attorney General, Eric Holder, has repeatedly announced that investigating and stamping out the bogey man of racial profiling by law enforcement will be a priority. FBI agents in the field in Afghanistan have been directed to read Miranda rights to captured enemy soldiers in foreign territory. CIA agents are being condemned and investigated for possible prosecution for violating the newly interpreted Geneva Convention protections of terrorists captured in the field (of course nobody discusses the obligations of the terrorists to observe these same conventions). Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio, one of the most effective law enforcers in the nation, is also being investigated by the Justice Department on allegations of racial profiling against Hispanic illegal aliens. These actions, and others, are designed to undermine the effective implementation of law enforcement and their efforts to protect the nation.

I won’t even get into his coterie of supporters and appointees who have fought law enforcement, such as Weatherman cop killers Bill Ayers and Bernadine Doehrn or recently departed Czar, Van Jones, who engaged in and organized protests against LAPD and in support of cop killer Mumia Abu Jamal.

Supporting law enforcement, I think not.

NY Governor David Paterson Plays a Whole Deck of Race Cards

Once again, NY Governor David Paterson has wielded blatant accusations of racism against his critics, like Van Helsing would a cross against Dracula. In an interview with NY Daily News columnist Errol Lewis, the accidental Governor laid the cause of all his troubles upon the alter of racism.

Speaking on a morning radio show hosted by Daily News columnist Errol Louis, an angry Paterson blamed the white-dominated media for pushing him to step aside next year.

“The whole idea is to get me not to run in the primary,” he said. Paterson complained there are not enough “black” media outlets to counteract the push.

And he suggested that Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick, the country’s only other African-American governor, also is under fire because of his race.

“We’re not in the post-racial period,” Paterson said.

“The reality is the next victim on the list, and you can see it coming, is President Barack Obama, who did nothing more than trying to reform a health care system.”

The Governor, who is a longtime racial arsonist, weaned within the Harlem Democrat Club and a former State Senator from Harlem, is either cynically playing the race card or is mentally ill and actually incapable of believing there is any other reason people would criticize his administration.

This Governorship has been characterized by complete incompetence since his ascension to the Governor’s mansion following the sexual melt-down and resignation of his predecessor, Elliot Spitzer. His inability to deal effectively with a complete break-down in the state economy, numerous state level scandals among the Democrat leadership and the leadership debacle in the state Senate have certainly not helped this lightweight.

Various polls show the Governor’s approval rating around a dismal 30%. Moreover, a recent Quinnipiac poll shows Democrat primary voters prefer NY Attorney General Andrew Cuomo 61% to Paterson’s 51%. Even in the black community, Cuomo is preferred 62% to 49% in the poll. Cuomo hasn’t even announced he’s running for Governor.

Paterson has a long-standing history of crying racism like the little boy who cried wolf.

Last September Paterson accused the McCain campaign of veiled racism by directly accusing them of using the term “community organizer” as a reference to Obama’s race.

“I think the Republican Party is too smart to call Barack Obama ‘black’ in a sense that it would be a negative. But you can take something about his life, which I noticed they did at the Republican Convention – a ‘community organizer.’ They kept saying it, they kept laughing,” he said.

In July 2008, at an NAACP convention, Paterson also threw up the magic shield of racism for both himself and Obama.

Governor Paterson, who became New York’s first black governor following the resignation of Eliot Spitzer, is lashing out at the press for describing him as an “accidental governor,” implying in a speech that the term’s frequent usage was motivated by racial bias.

In a speech at the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People’s annual convention in Cincinnati, Mr. Paterson also suggested that the defeat of Senator Obama by Senator McCain in the presidential contest would be a victory for racism.

Paterson is right about one thing, we are not in a post-racial world. We never will be as long as there are people like him, and so many of the Obama supporters, who see the spooks of race lurking behind every criticism of their administrations. Sadly, they don’t even see how their cynical use of racism allegations is, itself, an act of racism, whereby they seek to devalue free speech and the humanity of their own legitimate opponents.

The recent out-of-control use of this tactic has highlighted its inherent fallacy and hopefully will lead the citizenry to refuse to heed it in the future.  They’ve simply pushed that envelope too far, too often.

Racism is the new Chicken Little.

Latest Blood Libel: Conservatives Want Obama Dead

We are now moving beyond the playing of the race card in the rhetorical war being waged upon Americans by the leftist intelligentsia. The latest entry comes from Tolu Olorunda who asks:

Do conservative, hard-right demagogues, whose hatred for President Obama has hardly ever been subdued, secretly hope for–and are hard at work toward–the assassination of the nation’s first Black president.

In an article — Do some conservatives secretly wish for the assassination of Barack Obama? — on the Daily Voice, Olorunda repeats much of the recent slander against ordinary Americans that has become commonplace from the left over the last few weeks:

A couple of days ago, violence broke out at a Tampa, Florida, health care summit at which U.S. Rep. Kathy Castor was speaking. Mob groups, contracted by right-wing organizations, loudly interrupted the Congresswoman as she spoke, causing a scene so volatile that it soon turned violent.

As further investigation was launched into the events leading up to the Philadelphia scuffle, the truth soon surfaced–the truth that many conservative culture warriors still deny up to this very moment. It was revealed that many questionable right-wing lobbying firms, political organizations, and even health insurance agencies, had contracted mob groups, shuffling them from city to city, to disrupt any sense of decorum at the town hall meetings, commanding them to “stand up and shout,” “rock-the-boat,” “get all your hands up,” and “rattle” the lawmakers

As posters adorned with swastikas and pictures of Obama with Hitler-esque mustaches are being paraded at town hall meetings, it’s clear Beck and Limbaugh’s wildest wishes are finally seeing the light of day.

While Olorunda’s rhetorical and reckless rants are obviously pushing the envelope, they are also the next incremental step in the false history being wallpapered across the American psyche by these leftist lemmings who are blindly trying to take the entire country over the cliff.

The same hysterical bleating about conservatives is being levied by Matthew Rothschild at the Progressive.com — Obama in Physical Danger from Crazy Rightwingers. Rothschild writes:

When the rightwing nuts start carrying signs with Obama as Hitler and the Antichrist, when they start bringing loaded guns to his events, when they start saying things like “Euthanize Obama,” the climate is getting just too ugly.

Fueling the threats is a resurgent rightwing movement.

With Fox News and other rightwing outlets ginning up the Obamaphobia, it is too dangerous for the President of the United States to go out in public in our own country right now.

Rothschild also cites “evidence” by the Southern Poverty Law Center that was released this month in a report, The Second Wave, authored by radical leftist Mark Potok.

This report and other recent commentary from the SPLC has been picked-up by mainstream media outlets that are more than happy to spin the yarn. From USA Today:

The anti-government militia movement is “surging” across the country, fueled by a changing demographic in the country, the spread of conspiracy theories in mainstream media outlets and fear of a black man in the White House, according to a new report from the Southern Poverty Law Center.

And this from Eileen Sullivan at the Associated Press:

Last year, officials warned about an increase in activity from militias in a five-year threat projection by the Homeland Security Department.

“White supremacists and militias are more violent and thus more likely to conduct mass-casualty attacks on the scale of the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing,” the threat projection said.

One can assume by this drumbeat of rhetoric and dire warnings, coupled with official pronouncements (like the now-discredited DHS report on domestic terror threats), and the scandalous comments recently by elected officials such as Nancy Pelosi, that the left will attempt to turn the eye of government inward at these mythical threats from conservatives.

Much like in the 1990′s when the Clinton administration treated so called “right wing terror” as Job #1, while radical jihadists were killing and plotting, it seems that the now terminated War on Terror may be misdirected at Americans instead.

Congressman Assaulted and Threatened With Death Over Health Care Reform.

Or so Mitch Stewart, the Director of Organizing for America (Fauxbama’s official propaganda arm), would have us believe. Having originally registered with the Obama campaign website, to see what they were sending-out to supporters, has led to a never-ending stream of propaganda and lies. The latest email from OFA is an organizing call to visit members of Congress:

All this week, OFA members like you will be stopping by local congressional offices to show our support for insurance reform. You can have a quick conversation with the local staff, tell your personal story, or even just drop off a customized flyer and say that reform matters to you.

We’ll provide everything you need: the address, phone number, and open hours for the office, information about how the health care crisis affects your state for you to drop off (with the option of adding your personal story), and a step-by-step guide for your visit.

This latest email from OFA is replete with lies of the highest magnitude. While The One’s Basij stormtroopers from SEIU and ACORN are ACTUALLY committing physical assaults on the citizenry, Obama accuses concerned citizens of doing what is being done to them.

As you’ve probably seen in the news, special interest attack groups are stirring up partisan mobs with lies about health reform, and it’s getting ugly. Across the country, members of Congress who support reform are being shouted down, physically assaulted, hung in effigy, and receiving death threats. We can’t let extremists hijack this debate, or confuse Congress about where the people stand.

So citizens expressing concern are partisan mobs led by special interest groups. That may be true in the sense that the American militia in 1776 was. It is amazing to see a President openly condemn the very people he is sworn to represent because they have the haughty temerity to exercise their God-given rights to have themselves heard by their representative government. This is truly the face of big government led by the leftist intelligentsia. At least the mask is off for all to see.

What I would like to know is, which specific members of Congress have been physically assaulted? Which ones have received death threats? These would clearly be criminal offenses in any state in the nation, as well as Federal offenses. Police take official investigation reports regarding alleged crimes and these physical injuries would surely have resulted in medical treatment.  Surely there is some record of these incidents. Or is The President of the United States actually spreading incredible and incendiary lies and propaganda about an entire group of people in an effort to diminish their legitimate constitutional rights?

We have seen this before in other places and times. For shame Barry.

An Ode to Disarmament – Newly Unearthed Barack Obama Article from 1983

The following tidbit fell out of a NY Times article this weekend (my apologies for the length, but the source article from the Columbia University Sundial article is in pdf format and a little sloppy).

NY Times Article – July 4, 2009 – Obama’s Youth Shaped His Nuclear-Free Vision

Columbia University Sundial Article – March 10, 1983

BREAKING THE WAR MENTALITY
By Barack Obama

Most students at Columbia do not have first hand knowledge of war. Military violence has been a vicarious experience, channeled into our minds through television, film, and print.

The more sensitive among us struggle to extrapolate experiences of war from our everyday experience, discussing the latest mortality statistics from Guatemala, sensitizing ourselves to our parents’ wartime memories, or incorporating into our framework of reality as depicted by a Mailer or a Coppola. But the taste of war-the sounds and chill, the dead bodies-are remote and far removed. We know that wars have occurred, will occur, are occurring, but bringing such experience down into our hearts. and taking continual, tangible steps to prevent war, becomes a difficult task.

Two groups on campus, Arms Race Alternatives (ARA) and Students Against Militarism (SAM), work within these mental limits to foster awareness and practical action necessary to counter the growing threat of war. Though the emphasis of the two groups differ they share an aversion to current government policy. These groups, visualizing the possibilities of destruction and grasping the tendencies of distorted national priorities, are throwing their weight into shifting America off the dead-end track.

“Most people my age remember well the air-raid drills in school, under the desk with our heads tucked between our legs. Older people, they remember the Cuban Missile Crisis. I think these kinds of things left an indelible mark on our souls, so we’re more apt to be concerned,” says Don Kent, assistant director of programs and student activities at Earl Hall Center. Along with the community Volunteer Service Center, ARA has been Don’s primary concern, coordinating various working groups of faculty, students, and staff members, while simultaneously seeking the ever elusive funding for programs.

“When I first came here two years ago, Earl Hall had been a holding tank for five years. Paul Martin (director of Earl Hall) and I discussed our interests, and decided that ARA would be one of the programs we pushed. Initially, most of the work was done by non-student volunteers and staff. “Hot issues, particularly El Salvador, were occupying students at the time. consequently, we cosponsored a lot of activities with community organizations like SANE (Students Against Nuclear Energy).”

With the flowering of the nuclear Freeze movement, and particularly the June 12 rally in Central Park, however, student participation has expanded. One wonders whether this upsurge stems from young people’s penchant for the latest ‘happenings’, or from growing awareness of the consequences of nuclear holocaust. ARA maintains a mailing list of 500 persons and Don Kent estimates that approximately half of the active members are students. Although he feels that continuity is provided by the faculty and staff members, student attendance at ARA sponsored events–in particular a November 11 convocation on the nuclear threat-reveals a deep reservoir of concern. “I think students on this campus like to think of themselves as sophisticated, and don’t appreciate small vision, So they tend to come out more for the events; they do not want to just fold leaflets.”

Mark Bigelow, a graduate intern from Union Theological Seminary who works with Don to keep ARA running smoothly, agrees. “It seems that students here are fairly aware of the nuclear problem, and it makes for an underlying frustration. We try to talk to that frustration.” Consequently. the thrust of ARA is towards generating dialogue which will give people a rational handle on this controversial subject. this includes bringing speakers like Daniel Ellsberg to campus, publishing fact sheets compiled by interested faculty, and investigating the possible development of an interdisciplinary program in the Columbia curriculum dealing with peace, disarmament, and world order.

Tied in with such a thrust is the absence of what Don calls “a party line.” By taking an almost apolitical approach to the problem, ARA hopes to get the university to take nuclear arms issues seriously. “People don’t like having their intelligence insulted,” says Don, “so we try to disseminate information and allow the individual to make his or her own decision.”

Generally, the narrow focus of the Freeze movement as well as academic discussions of first versus second strike capabilities, suit the military-industrial interests, as they continue adding to their billion dollar erector sets. When Peter Tosh sings that “everybody’s asking for peace, but nobody’s asking for justice,” one is forced to wonder whether disarmament or arms control issues, severed from economic and political issues, might be another instance of focusing on the symptoms of a problem instead of the disease itself. Mark Bigelow does not think so. “We do focus primarily on catastrophic weapons. Look, we say, here’s the worst part, let’s work on that. You’re not going to get rid of the military in the near future, so let’s at least work on this.”

Mark Bigelow does feel that the links are there, and points to fruitful work being done by other organizations involved with disarmament. ”The Freeze is one part of a whole disarmament movement. The lowest common denominator, so to speak. For instance, April 10-16 is Jobs For Peace week, with a bunch of things going on around the city. Also, the New York City Council may pass a resolution.in April calling for greater social as opposed to military spending. Things like this may dispel the idea that disarmament is a white issue, because how the government spends its revenue affects everyone.”

The very real advantages of concentrating on a single issue is leading the National Freeze movement to challenge individual missile systems, while continuing the broader campaign. This year, Mark Bigelow sees the checking of Pershing II and Cruise missile deployment as crucial. “Because of their small size and mobility, their deployment will make possible arms control verification far more difficult, and will cut down warning time for the Soviets to less than ten minutes. That can only be a destabilizing factor.” Additionally, he sees the initiation by the U.S. of the Test Ban Treaty as a powerful first step towards a nuclear free world.

ARA encourages members to join buses to Washington and participate in a March 7-8 rally intended to push through the Freeze resolution which is making its second trip through the House. ARA also will ask United Campuses to Prevent Nuclear War (UCAM), an information and lobbying network based in universities, nationwide, to serve as its advisory board in the near future. Because of its autonomy from Columbia (which does not fund political organizations) UCAM could conceivably become a more active arm of disarmament campaigns on campus, though the ARA will continue to function solely as a vehicle for information and discussion.

Also operating out of Earl Hall Center, Students Against Militarism was formed in response to the passage of registration laws in 1980. An entirely student-run organization, SAM casts a wider net than ARA, though for the purposes of effectiveness, they have tried to lock in on one issue at a time.

“At the heart. of our organization is an anti-war focus”, says junior Robert Kahn, one of SAM’s fifteen or so active members. “From there, a lot of issues shoot forth-nukes, racism, the draft, and South Africa. ”We have been better organized when taking one issue at a time, but we are always cognizant of other things going on, and collaborate frequently with other campus organizations like CISPES and REELPOLITIK.”

At this time, the current major issue is the Solomon Bill, the latest legislation from Congress to obtain compliance to registration. the law requires that all male students applying for federal financial aid submit proof of registration, or else the government coffers will close. Yale, Wesleyan, and Swathmore have refused to comply, and plan to offer non-registrants other forms of financial aid. SAM hopes to press Columbia into following suit, though so far President Sovern and company seem prepared to acquiesce to the bill.

Robert believes students tacitly support non-registrants, though the majority did not comply. “Several students have come up to our tables and said that had they known of the ineffectiveness of prosecution. they would not have registered.” A measure of such underlying support is the 400 signatures on a petition protesting the Solomon Bill, which SAM collected the first four hours it appeared. Robert also points out that prior to registration, there were four separate bills circulating in the House proposing a return to the but none ever got out of committees, and there have not been renewed efforts. An estimated half-million nonregistrants can definately be a powerful signal.

But wait, didn’t Fauxbama say during the campaign he wanted to JOIN the military?

On Sunday’s program, host George Stephanopoulos asked the freshman senator in a taped interview if he’d ever thought about military service.

“You know,” said Obama as if his reply might surprise people. “I actually did. I had to sign up for Selective Service when I graduated from high school. And I was growing up in Hawaii. And I have friends whose parents were in the military. There are a lot of Army, military bases there.

“And I actually always thought of the military as an ennobling and, you know, honorable option. But keep in mind that I graduated in 1979. The Vietnam War had come to an end. We weren’t engaged in an active military conflict at that point. And so, it’s not an option that I ever decided to pursue.”   Source: LA Times Article

Prodding students into participating beyond name signing and attending events is tricky, but SAM members seem undaunted. “A lot of the problem comes not from people’s ignorance of the facts, but because the news and statistics are lifeless. That’s why we search for campus issues like the Solomon bill that have direct impact on the student body, and effectively link the campus to broader issues.” By organizing and educating the Columbia community, such activities lay the foundation for future mobilization against the relentless, often silent spread of militarism in the country. ”The time is right to tie together social and military issues,” Robert continues, “and the more strident the Administration becomes, the more aware people are of their real interests.

The belief that moribund institutions, rather than individuals are at the root of the problem, keep SAM’s energies alive are a prerequisite for members of an organization like ours is the faith that people are fundamentally good, but you need to show them. and when you look at the work people are doing across the country, it makes you optimistic.”

Perhaps the essential goodness of humanity is an arguable proposition, but by observing the SAM meeting last Thursday night, with its solid turnout and enthusiasm, one might be persuaded that the manifestations of our better instincts can at least match the bad ones. Regarding Columbia’s possible compliance, one comment in particular hit upon an important point with the Solomon hill, “The thing we need to do is expose how columbia is talking out of two sides of its mouth.”

Indeed, the most pervasive malady of the collegiate system specifically, and the American experience generally, is that elaborate patterns of knowledge and theory have been disembodied from individual choices and government policy. What the members of ARA and SAM try to do is infuse what they have learned about the current situation, hearing the words of that formidable roster on the face of Butler Library, names like Thoreau, Jefferson, and Whitman, to hear on the twisted logic of which we are today a part. By adding their energy and effort in order to enchance the possibility of a decent world, they may help deprive us of a spectacular experience – that of war. But then, there are some things we shouldn’t have to live through in order to want to avoid the experience.

Well ain’t that special. No wonder he didn’t want to discuss his undergrad days during the campaign.  I can’t wait to see what we agreed to in Moscow this week…

WH rescinds July 4 invites to Iranians
Washington Times Wednesday, June 24, 2009
Stephen Dinan

The White House has rescinded the invitations to Iranian diplomats to attend July 4 celebrations at U.S. embassies around the world.

White House press secretary Robert Gibbs said nobody from Iran RSVPed to come, and at this point, the invitations are no longer valid.

“Given the events of the past many days, those invitations will no longer be extended,” Mr. Gibbs said.

Leon Panetta suggests Dick Cheney wants America to be attacked.

In this week’s article in the New Yorker by Jane Mayer – The Secret History – Panetta responds to Cheney’s recent criticism of Obama regarding Gitmo and terrorist interrogations.

“I think he smells some blood in the water on the national-security issue,” he told me. “It’s almost, a little bit, gallows politics. When you read behind it, it’s almost as if he’s wishing that this country would be attacked again, in order to make his point. I think that’s dangerous politics.”

Naturally, this article condemns the CIA through the twisted logic of the Bush-haters on the left.

In the past few years, irrefutable evidence has emerged that after 9/11 the agency lost its moral bearings. A confidential Red Cross report has come into public view, along with formerly classified government documents, leaving no doubt that the agency subjected scores of terror suspects to prolonged physical and psychological cruelty.

The evidence is irrefutable, because they say it is. There is no debate on the issue. Instead, much like a banana republic, the call is to conduct a wartime prosecution of the the enemy – the political enemy that is.

Torture is a felony, and is sometimes treated as a capital crime. The Convention Against Torture, which America ratified in 1994, requires a government to prosecute all acts of torture; failure to do so is considered a breach of international law.

The CIA is also criticized for providing misleading evidence about WMD’s in Iraq.

The C.I.A.’s role in providing misleading intelligence about the presence of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq has also provoked calls for reform. Senator Dianne Feinstein, the new chairman of the Intelligence Committee, told me, “There’s no vote that I regret more than the vote to authorize war with Iraq”; her vote was based on intelligence that she describes as “flat wrong.”

Even if one were to assume CIA incompetence or malfeasance on the WMD issue, it doesn’t square with the fact that intelligence agencies of other countries were saying the same thing at the same time, as were Democrat heavyweights going back into the Clinton administration. Feinstein, of course, condemns Bush for making the call based on this issue, while she merely has a “regret.” If she were consistent, she would resign and retire to private life.

Panetta does, however, grudgingly admit that the enhanced interrogation techniques worked.

The Senate investigation will, among other things, probe the question of torture’s efficacy. Dick Cheney has repeatedly claimed that “enhanced” interrogations yield results. Opponents say that torture is counterproductive. Panetta is more agnostic. He told me, “The bottom line would be this: Yes, important information was gathered from these detainees. It provided information that in fact was acted upon. Was this the only way to obtain this information? I think that will always be an open question.” But he is certain that “we did pay a price for using those methods.”

Despite putting forth the public perception that CIA employees will not be prosecuted, there is apparently a back-door effort to do just that, one that the Obama administration could disavow as the independent actions of an overzealous prosecutor (wink wink nudge nudge).

A prosecutor appointed by the Justice Department, John Durham, has convened a grand jury in Washington to weigh potential criminal charges against C.I.A. officers who were involved in the destruction of ninety-two videotapes documenting the interrogations of Abu Zubaydah and other detainees. Mickum told me that he has met several times with Durham, and believes that the scope of his inquiry may have expanded to include a review of whether the C.I.A. began using brutal methods on Zubaydah before it received written authorization from the Justice Department. (This would provide an extra motive for destroying the videotapes.) Mickum said, “I got the sense he was very serious.”

Panetta has a plan for replacing the enhanced interrogation techniques with a kinder, gentler method.

Panetta is already forging ahead on one important reform: he plans to replace the abusive interrogation program with a legally acceptable, non-coercive alternative. A task force led by the Harvard Law School professor Philip Heymann has been advising him on a proposal to create an élite U.S. government interrogation team, staffed by some of the best C.I.A., F.B.I., and military officers in the country, and drawing on the advice of social scientists, linguists, and other scholars. “What I’m pushing for is to establish a facility where we develop a team of interrogators trained in the latest techniques,” Panetta said.

Enough with the soft pillows, bring out the comfy chair!!

Charlie Rangel Threatens Andy Cuomo With the Race Card

Good time Charlie has decided to weigh in on the upcoming NY State Governor’s race.  In discussing the possibility of Andrew Cuomo running against David Patterson, who is rapidly dropping towards single digit approval ratings in the polls with his completely incompetent management of the state government, Rangel deals the race card.

Should Cuomo run, Rangel said, it would create a divide that could be “devastating” to New York Democrats.

“I think that there might be an inclination for racial polarization in a primary in the state of New York,” Rangel said.

“Since we have most African-Americans registered as Democrats, and since you would be making an appeal for Democrats, it would be devastating in my opinion.”

I guess Charlie didn’t see the need to threaten trouble from blind Democrats in support of the blind Governor, since the presumption is that blacks will blindly vote for the black candidate against any white candidate.

At least he didn’t threaten all-out race war like some of Fauxbama’s supporters.

Well, it’s official, Obama IS GOD!

CHRIS MATTHEWS (HOST):Evan Thomas is editor at large for Newsweek magazine. Evan, you remember 1984. It wasn’t 100 years ago. Reagan and World War II and the sense of us as the good guys in the world, how are we doing?

EVAN THOMAS: Well, we were the good guys in 1984, it felt that way. It hasn’t felt that way in recent years. So Obama’s had, really, a different task We’re seen too often as the bad guys. And he, he has a very different job from … Reagan was all about America, and you talked about it. Obama is – we are above that now. We’re not just parochial, we’re not just chauvinistic, we’re not just provincial. We stand for something, I mean in a way Obama’s standing above the country, above above the world, he’s sort of God.

Obama Invites Iran to Celebrate America’s Independence Day

You can’t make this up. From today’s NY Times (A New Iran Overture, With Hot Dogs):

Last Friday, the State Department sent a cable to its embassies and consulates around the world notifying them that “they may invite representatives from the government of Iran” to their Independence Day celebrations — annual receptions that typically feature hot dogs, red-white-and-blue bunting and some perfunctory remarks about the founding fathers.

Hopefully they won’t be serving pork franks.

Now the last time Iranians visited a U.S. embassy, the only fireworks involved the hostile takeover of the embassy in Tehran and the hostage taking of 66 Americans, 52 of whom would be held in captivity for 444 days. The hostages’ stay included mock executions held for the amusement of their guards (after making the hostages strip to their skivvies for the execution to humiliate them). Other atrocities included publicly parading the hostages before hostile crowds and television cameras (shades of Hanoi!), keeping hostages in solitary confinement for months, keeping them handcuffed for weeks, threatening their safety, and interrogating them. Presumably, this will all be investigated by the Iranian legislature to fully reveal this violation of the Geneva Convention.

During a failed rescue attempt 8 American servicemen were killed.

I’m sure Mahmoud Ahmadinejad will receive this invitation warmly so he can bask in the memory of the interrogations he supervised as one of the leaders of the hostage crisis.

Move Gitmo detainees to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

Specifically settle them in Worcester or on Martha’s Vineyard, which are respectively in Massachusetts’ 3rd Congressional District represented by Jim McGovern and 10th Congressional District represented by Bill Delahunt.  I prefer Martha’s Vineyard, perhaps the Kennedy compound could be seized via eminent domain to be used for this important public purpose.

Since these two Congressmen have publicly DEMANDED that the United States resettle 17 Uighur detainees currently held in Gitmo, doing so should be done on THEIR home turf.  Lawmakers demand Guantanamo Uighurs move to US.

“The Uighur people are not enemies of America. In fact, I know you admire our fundamental ideals of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness,” – Delahunt.

I guess the fact that they were apprehended fighting our troops in Tora Bora is irrelevant.

A shout-out to Congressman Chris Smith from New Jersey’s 4th congressional district, who also felt it necessary to lend moral support to the Uighurs, although not going quite so far as to demand they be resettled in the U.S. Perhaps he forgets that the 2001 Anthrax letters were traced back to Hamilton Township in his district.
