I’m very conservative. I have grave concerns about the government bailouts. I think the economy needs to cleanse itself. I believe there is, let’s call it, a culture struggle. And I think traditional America is losing it. To the detriment of our society and its institutions.
But I can’t bring myself to demonize Barack Obama, even though his voting record in the Senate makes me shudder.
As a conservative activist, I’ve plunged into the blogging world. Because that’s largely where the game is. Blogs have their benefits, and they have their role. But one thing they’ve done is further polarize our country. Tens of thousands of citizen journalists and underemployed professional journalists have joined the blogging world. And the competition for our attention is fierce. It’s not like the days of Macy’s and Gimbel’s. Or more to the point, Pulitzer and Hearst. Today’s journalists make the “yellow journalists” of old look like bumbling amateurs.
Everyone wants to make that post that everyone else is going to want to hyperlink. Bloggers need to stand out. Many of these online “journalists” are also activists, so they’re not above outrageous political stunts. And neither am I.
And then there are the millions of devoted commenters on the blog sites. These millions engage in rapid-fire discourse at two arm lengths away. And such discourse is often predictably uncivil. I do not try to encourage uncivil discourse. My new website, Big Bag of Wind, bills itself as a forum for “thoughtful blowhards.”
As a blogger, I have found no shortage of people to demonize. There’s always Hillary, Harry, Howard, and other of their ilk.
But I can’t work up a rage about Barack Obama. I can’t do it. I can’t even muster up that cutting a comment, not one that I’d be satisfied to print. He’s a great role model for American-Americans. He’s invited Rick Warren to give the invocation at the Inauguration. He’s smarter than heck. Darn. But not darn, because I really am, as an American, rooting for his success.
There’s always Howard. I hope he lands a new job soon!

...And? <NT>

Awwwwww, but now I can’t leave it alone. You went and did it. “He’s a great role model for American-Americans.”
Really ? I never thought of him that way. Do you wonder why ?
I guess if you can call a role model a person who would hang out with admitted domestic terrorists, sit in the church of a racist, hate-filled preacher for 20 years calling him a life-mentor and then vote multiple times to not give any care to babies born from botched abortions… then well, I see your point.
Oh well….. Maybe we’re all missing something.

6eorge Jetson Sunday, January 11th at 7:35PM EST (link)Then don’t. I don’t hate Barack for following his self-interests. In fact, I picture him getting up each morning and laughing about the contradictions he’s fairly sure he’s going to get away with in the upcoming day.
What drives me bonkers is the the degree to which the US has rolled over for him, and will accept anything he says. Not only the MSM, but also folks I deal with everyday, that things will get better starting Jan 20. When I ask why, they don’t have an answer other than “it’s gotta be better”.
Then stick to your principles. There’s nothing wrong with a dispassionate but persistent advocacy of conservatism. As long as you do it and stay true to yourself.

Vladimir Sunday, January 11th at 7:52PM EST (link)Your tone implies that the only possible objection a rightward blogger could have to our President-elect is based on pure partisanship.
But he’s been a public figure for 4 years and a candidate for two of them, and he’s said a lot of unfortunate thing and taken a lot of objectionable positions.
I suspect that conservatives in general will tend to give him some space insofar as his roles as head of foreign policy and commander in chief. Moreso than liberals ever deferred to the current President.
We all want him to be successful as President insofar as the country succeeds. He has numerous policy stances that should be torpedoed starting on day one.

“Compassionate conservative” was a big, self inflicted blunder on the part of George Bush fo robvious reasons.
Funny, it was Howard Dean who actually said he hated Republicans and everything they stand for.

CJB68 Sunday, January 11th at 9:49PM EST (link)What he seems to be saying and what has been mentioned already is that it is the policies and the rhetoric of the Democratic Party and like-minded Republicans that is the problem, not the men and women themselves. I have more to say against more prominent figures such as Pelosi, Ried, Biden and Clinton (etc) than Obama, though he is a part of the whole kit and kaboodle down there in DC. Directing all our wrath against him would be just like Leftists directing all their attacks against Bush for the past 8 years; using a scapegoat instead of using your energy to try and persuade people why they should look at the other option than what they’re giving.

kat Sunday, January 11th at 8:27PM EST (link)I don’t get the “he’s smart” routine. Just because someone can give a good speech and went Ivy League doesn’t make one smart. That is one mantra of which I have tired - “But at least he’s smart”.
I know several Ivy Leaguers myself and while they are book smart, I certainly wouldn’t want them running the country. All of them voted Obama (even the Republican ones) because of a combination of his Ivy League status and their belief that Sarah Palin was the village idiot that the Left portrayed her.
I know these folks, wouldn’t call them friends and a lot of it has to do with their time spent at the Ivies. They look down their noses at those who don’t, deeming them incapable of doing anything more than serving up french fries at McDonald’s. I can’t stand being around them for longer than a few minutes at a time - or around their children in whom they have instilled the same attitude. The Ivies are infested with these kind of people - they are the main reason I transferred from an Ivy after one semester. I don’t regret that decision one bit.
I think Barack Obama has benefited from being in the right place at the right time and sold a bunch of suckers on his mantra of “change”. I think time will prove he is nothing more than an empty suit and an extremely partisan one at that.

icbm Sunday, January 11th at 10:20PM EST (link)i listened to his mlk day speech at the church. i’ve listened to most of his stump speeches. i watched many commercials and youtubes. i watched a number of the debates, and i’ve also heard him speak off the cuff (in those rare moments that he let himself do so).
i do not see the intelligence and common sense that you perceive. what i see is doctrinaire leftism of the carter/mcgovern type, but delivered with passion and with enough vagueness as to seem moderate.
nor do i give him credit for being a lecturer at the uc law school. i went to a law school (yes, one ranked nearly as high as uc, if that matters) and can tell you there are some dunces who teach there. and i met very few law professors who I thought capable of governing a town, much less a nation.
i’ll grant you that he is remarkably calm - not a bad quality to have in politics.

I have listened to him
kat Monday, January 12th at 2:01AM EST (link)Unlike many of the members of the cult of “O”, I have actually listened to the man - every debate, every major speech and many off the cuff interviews. Whenever he is without his teleprompter, his favorite words become “Uhhh” and “Umm”.
But, even if he was an excellent off the cuff speaker, that doesn’t make him intelligent either. A smart person isn’t always a great public speaker. No, my belief about his intelligence or lack thereof is based on hearing him, really listening to him. What did he REALLY say during the whole election process? Not a whole heck of a lot other than “hope” and “change”.
Has that shown me that he has common sense? Heck no. And calm? I agree it is not a bad thing to be when you are President, but he hasn’t had a real reason to be anything but calm. He has spent his time in the Senate campaigning for President, not making the really tough decisions a President is going to have to make.
As I said before, empty suit.

antisocial Sunday, January 11th at 10:14PM EST (link)You are so confused. You are rooting for his success? Success as Barack Obama defines it or as you define it? If you are truly a “conservative” as you claim his success is exact opposite of what you might define it to be? If your definition of success matches Barack’s definition of Success then you are definitely a far-left socialist.

I don’t hate him. I don’t even know him.
I do think that if he enacts the policies he wants to enact it will set the prosperity and values of our country back in terrible ways, if it doesn’t outright destroy us. That’s not hate. That is a willingness to recognize that the morals and policies of our elected leaders matter.
So shove off.

:-) You really must be dense ...
Martin Knight Monday, January 12th at 5:16PM EST (link)And I’m beginning to feel stupid for wasting my time responding to you.
We don’t want, nor care that you hate anyone. It’s absolutely irrelevant which is why we’re all curious as to where you got the stupid idea that to be a conservative means you have to “hate” Barack Obama.
Get this through your (apparently thick) head; Republicans would the first to hang and quarter anyone who harms a hair on Obama’s head, because we respect the office of the President of the United States even if we don’t respect the man occupying it.
That doesn’t mean we’re not going to oppose him wherever and whenever necessary.
So if you “hate” anything Clinton … that’s your damn business. It doesn’t make you any more a Conservative than that brick over there. In fact, I’m pretty that brick over there is more conservative than you are.
