In response to this article stating that Powell might endorse Obama.
If this is true, this confirms all that I thought about Colin Powell since he left the Bush Administration. Specifically, his involvement in the Valerie Plame Affair.

It is no sercert that Colin Powell fought tooth and nail with Donald Rumsfeld about going to war with Iraq. Then Secretary Powell thought we shoud have given the UN more time. However Donald Rumsfeld and Dick Cheney had the ear of President Bush, thus was over-ruled.
Secretary Powell tendered his resignation on November 15, 2004. The next day, Richard Armitage also resigns. Exactly a year later, the Valerie Plame Affair errupts with Bob Woodward’s column. History knows the rest of the story.
I normaly don’t believe in conspiracy theories, but this smells to high heaven and I am unable to speak of Powell’s name with out total disgust.
Let’s go back to Bob Woodward’s column. He stated it was “a government official with no axe to grind” who gave him the name of Valerie Plame, I take great offence to that description of Armitage.
Again, no secert that Armitage was a moderate* among The Vulcans and the only one not working in some way for the Bush Administration at this time. Did Armitage get directions from Powell to “accidentally” slip the name?
Yes, Bob Woodward’s column did come out in 2005 but it is well known that Richard Armitage met with Woodward in mid-2003. In later phone calls, he leak the name.
I have no proof, but I think then Secretary Powell order Armitage to leak the name in order to discredit President Bush. The ending result is poor Lewis Libby having his reputation damnage over a non-crime. I am still trying to wrap my head around Lewis Libby’s conviction. But I digress…
Come up to me and ask if Colin Powell had anything to do with Valerie Plame Affair, and I will tell you:
“Yes! I would not trust Powell as far as I can throw him!”
Now with Powell ready to endorse Obama, proves that Colin Powell does have an axe to grind with the President Bush and, with Richard Armitage, set the Valerie Plame Affair in motion.
*While I believe there is nothing wrong with Moderates, I am just pointing out that both Colin Powell and Richard Armitage are Moderate Republicans who did not agree with going to war with Iraq. I consider myself a Moderate Republican and I still think going to war with Iraq was the right thing to do at the time.

Hr talked Bush41 out of destroying the fleeing Saddam army in 1991 and handed Saddam a victiry in Arab and Muslim, incl UBL’s eyes by leaving the tyrant in power.
You are exactly right in your revulsion at his behavior in the Armitage affair.

Colin Powell, in a rare departure from Armitage-aided anonymous leaks to the press attacking his Commander-in-Chief, released a public letter he sent to John McCain opposing President Bush’s request that Congress clarify the meaning of vague language in Common Article III, as pertains to prisoners of war, and, as recently ordered by a brain dead Supreme Court, to illegal terrorist enemy combatants as well, prohibiting “outrages upon personal dignity, in particular humiliating and degrading treatment.”
The letter reads in part: “The world is beginning to doubt the moral basis of our fight against terrorism,” Powell observed. “To redefine common article 3 [of the Geneva convention] would add to those doubts. Furthermore, it would put our own troops at risk.”
Any world that doubts the moral basis of our fight against terrorism has much larger problems that can be addressed by leaving in place litigation inviting vague language in a treaty.
See Common Article III after comments.
We are not “re-defining” the treaty. The treaty does not define “outrages”, “humiliating”, or “degrading.” Powell would allow anti-American World Court judges to define those terms to imprison American interrogators of Khalid Sheik Mohammad who extracted information that saved thousands of lives.
If an American criminal statute contained such language, the law would be thrown out for vagueness. One must be fairly put on notice concerning prohibited conduct for which one may be lose their liberty.
Powell’s policy would leave our military, CIA and innocent civilian lives at risk and have allowed Al Qaida to have carried out many more terrorist acts inside the United States.
The public letter from Powell comes on the heels of years of silence despite his having information that could have prevented Scooter Libby from being indicted.
The moral basis for his actions was much clearer when he was taking orders to kill enemies in the First Gulf War.
COMMON ARTICLE III
In the case of armed conflict not of an international character occurring in the territory of one of the High Contracting Parties, each Party to the conflict shall be bound to apply, as a minimum, the following provisions:
To this end the following acts are and shall remain prohibited at any time and in any place whatsoever with respect to the above-mentioned persons:
(a) violence to life and person, in particular murder of all kinds, mutilation, cruel treatment and torture;
(b) taking of hostages;
(c) outrages upon personal dignity, in particular humiliating and degrading treatment;
(d) the passing of sentences and the carrying out of executions without previous judgement pronounced by a regularly constituted court, affording all the judicial guarantees which are recognized as indispensable by civilized peoples.

Pay no attention to Powell
Octavian Wednesday, August 13th at 8:51PM EDT (link)I wouldn’t get to worked up about Colin Powell purportedly endorsing Barack Hussein Obama. At the end of the day, it’s just a Black guy endorsing another Black guy. No big deal. Now if Powell wants to continue endorsing Barack Hussein Obama after the latter has clearly demonstrated that he is unfit to confront Russia and Vladimir Putin, well then Powell is being intellectually dishonest with himself because clearly John McCain is most capable of dealing with Putin.
Whoa

I can’t help but wonder how he feels about his advice on foreign policy given the same weight as George Clooney. Really, Colin – that’s the guy you are going to support for president? Ach.

Spyderstan Thursday, August 14th at 2:11PM EDT (link)+1 on a connection in the Armitage affair.
As far as Powell endorsing Obama…
Could be more wishful thinking from the media.
Funny how they run with some stories from un-named sources that turn out to be BS.
And then other stories they sit on till forced to report on, IE, Edwards.
I have never really thought about this before...
Susannah (Diary) Thursday, August 14th at 4:05PM EDT (link)Honestly, I have never really thought about this issue from this particular angle before. However, your theory is really interesting, and you do make some really good points. Anyway, recommended.
Since when is Powell a "conservative"??
