SunRail Is A Go

Which is frankly a bad thing*:

TALLAHASSEE — Ending decades of bottlenecked ambitions for Central Florida mass transit, the Florida Legislature on Tuesday gave final approval to the SunRail train that’s expected to start carrying passengers in 2012.

The Orlando Sentinel gives us a good reason why the Florida Legislature shouldn’t have approve the SunRail, just a few paragraphs later:

And it sends much-needed cash to South Florida, where the Tri-Rail commuter train has been hemorrhaging money.

And I’ll give you other good reasons: Amtrak. Fannie Mae & Freddie Mac. US Postal Service. I suggest you read Glenn Beck’s “Arguing With Idoits” for all the juicy details on all of those epic boondoogles in government mismanagement into the “for profit” realm. It has and never will work. History has shown us time and again, that this will be a money blackhole for special interest. Sure we will get some temporary jobs building the thing, but it’s only temporary! We need permanent private jobs!

*pulls hair out*

But it gets worse! I can understand that Charlie Crist supports this boondoogle in the making, he called for the special session. However this should be a no brainer for Marco Rubio-

Rubio would not say whether or not he supports the SunRail deal.

“The bottom line is: Is it a transportation program? If the cost benefit analysis is a net positive for Florida, then that’s good. And that’s what it’s been in the past when I was there. If on the other hand it’s being sold because it will add a bunch of jobs to Florida, then I think the answer is no.”

WHAT?! That whole “cost benefit analysis” arguement for a government program is [beep]ing insane**. I- I just don’t know anymore. Obviously, someone hasn’t learn their lesson on the Tri-Rail. Better yet, someone give Mr Rubio a copy of Glenn Beck’s book as soon as possible and tell him to read the part (in the first chapter) about Amtrack. Now I am not a single issue person, but Mr Rubio should know better.

**Insane: Doing the same thing over and over again, and expecting different results.

The rail is a difficult issue for him because there are quite a few Tampa/Orlando area businesses that stand to benefit from the rail. It’s quite likely a net negative for the State, but I don’t think it’s an issue that really energizes anybody (except for those who stand to benefit from it) since a lot of the taxes in Florida are tourist subsidized. Rubio is right in that there is a cost-benefit analysis that must be done — the rail might bring in enough tourists to pay for it. Might.

Give Crist credit for this little maneuver, it presents a problem for Rubio. For Rubio, there’s no good reason to jump out in front of that train (figuratively speaking) at this point until he has facts and a slick media package to back it up.

Did you even look at the map for the line? Maybe I should have pointed this out in my post, but the SunRail goes nowhere near Daytona Beach, Disney, or Tampa! I mean really, DeLand? Poinciana?

          SUNRAIL

Scroll down for the route. As you can see, the farthest west it goes is Poinciana. The SunRail is for the Greater Orlando area alone. It doesn’t even go to Disney for heaven’s sake!

The connectivity issue may be a red herring thrown out by its supporters… I’d have to see all of the maps of the new rail lines to see if it makes sense. I thought it was a necessary leg, but maybe not.

The Florida House of Representatives passed a bill Dec. 7 that would pave the way for Orlando?s SunRail project, as well as a high-speed rail project connecting Orlando, Miami, Tampa and Jacksonville.

These projects are being sold sold piece by piece; but you have to get them all (if the cost-benefit analysis supports it) or kill them all.

Clearly, you’re one of those people who thinks: ‘This will be different. Florida will learn the mistakes of Amtrack/Tri-Rail.’

Bull. Tri-Rail was to be a launching point to connect the four cities. That rail was started in 1987. If you think SunRail will be a turning point for an over-all project, I have a hotel in Dubai I can sell you.

And not sure how you could possibly infer that from what I’ve said.

Someone should take away any sharp instruments from all GOP politicians. This is a loser for us, fiscally and politically. Thaken for the Sun Rail website.

“What about operation and maintenance (O&M) costs?
Once open, SunRail will receive an allocation of federal funds each year. There will also be ?fare-box? revenue from passenger fees and potential advertising revenue to offset operating costs. This will cover a portion of the annual operations and maintenance (O&M) costs. The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is picking up the remaining O&M costs, commonly called the ?operating subsidy?, for the first seven years to prepare for and during the I-4 reconstruction work. After that, local governments will be responsible for the remaining O&M amount.”

I guess I should take heart that at least they are telling us the truth that this is a LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOSER designed to redistribute wealth to somewhere between 4 and 12,000 people a day. I feel better now knowing they think I am only half stupid.

At least Cary Baker ran away for this. I suggest everyone get behind him instead of Adam Putnam (Ag Commissioner Race).

We have in Florida a special history regarding rail that should have had this one dead and buried a long time ago, Metrorail in Dade County. IN the early 1980′s they opened this rail system “declaring” it would pay for itself with a daily rider ship of 100,000. The actual first year riderhsip was more like 8,000.

It got so bad at one point Dade County thought about shutting the system down, until the federal government told them they would have to pay back the 670 million dollars the Feds contributed. It has been hemoraghing ever since. At one point, David Stockman Budget Director under Ronald Reagan, said about metrorail:

It would have been cheaper for the Federal government to purchase a chauffered limousine for each rider”

Then we have which is loved by the 13,000 riders a dya that used that system Unfortunately, the taxpayers of Florida have to subsidize the fare of 6.90 with another 5.00 for every trip on that train, yes, another massive LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOSER.

What can I say, blood is hooting out of my eyes and my head explodes, while spinning at 33000 RPM. Just what I would expect the California legislature to do.

Florida is required to balance our budget by Constitutional Amendment. This past year was a gut wrenching year. We had to make deep cuts and raise taxes to get this to happen. Sadly, the next 2 years are likely to make that process look like a day in the park. Crists embracing the stimulus is going to cause us no untold maountain of trouble in achieving a balanced budget. Note to all school board members:

I know you all came crying to every meeting last year begging us to pressure the legislature to “save the children” from the budget ax. In as much as next year will even be worse, please have your loved ones remove all sharp insturments and firearms from your houses. You are likely to get suicidal thuis year.

Remember, you will have significantly less for education next year so the state could build a LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOSER for between 4-12,00 people to ride per day. I guess if they are all teachers that might be OK with you. Otherwise, you might want to question the priorities.

At a certain point, when do you have to look yourself in the eye and not have to admit, the countyy is being run by people too stupid to operate a checkbook…or…in the alternative…who are traitors spending us into certain bankruptcy.
