Stupak May Yet Be Our Savior

Hard to believe, but Stupak may yet be our savior in torpedoing ObamaCare:

An aide to Rep. Bart Stupak (D. Mich.) coordinated opposition to a Senate compromise on the place of abortion in health care legislation this morning with the Republican Senate leadership, the Conference Catholic Bishops, and other anti-abortion groups, according to a chain of frantic emails obtained this morning by POLITICO.

Stupak, in an interview with POLITICO, called the Senate’s bill’s abortion position unacceptable[.]

(snip)

The emails suggest a previously unseen degree of coordination between the offices of Stupak and McConnell.

Stupak is the leader of a group of pro-life Democrats who say they’ll oppose the sweeping legislation if it uses government money to pay for abortion, while McConnell is firmly committed to killing the legislation. The fact that their offices have made common cause against the Senates health care compromise will likely further infuriate Stupak’s Democratic colleagues in the House, and demonstrates his willingness to stop any bill that doesn’t pass his test.

“Guys – when will we see your letters of opposition to the managers amendment?? We need them ASAP!” wrote Erika Smith, the Stupak aide, at 9:23 this morning, less than an hour after the amendment had become available.

The email’s recipients included key staffers for the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, National Right to Life, the Family Research Council, as well as Autumn Fredericks Christensen, aide to a top pro-life Republican Joe Pitts, and Lanier Swann, a McConnell aide.

Or at least delay it until after Christmas. Although he denies it, aides and coalitions just don’t start working together on their own. With a united Republican front, I can only forsee one of two things will happen after conference:

1) The strong anti-abortion (which I support*) stays in and progressives bolt in mass.

2) The strong anti-abortion stays out and Blue Dogs bolt.

Either way, the American people win. Now I know I am assuming a lot. But I can hope and Obama is all about hope, no?

*Even though I am a Moderate Republican, I despise abortion and embryonic stem cell reseach. While I can go into a long rant on both subjects, I will just leave it at that for now.

We cannot depend on Dems to stop this! Every Dem or “independent” who was “sure” to stop the bill has caved in at some point, for some price. There were predictions about how it would die, if polling hit a certain number. They have been wrong.

Stupak will cave in: it is only a matter of time. I hope you are right, but I fear you are not.

Only elections in 2010 and 2012 have some possibility of stopping it, and even then nothing is guaranteed because of the 100% probability of D.C-itis infecting at least some of the Republicans who will be elected then.

Remember the MSM will paint anybody trying to turn the clock back in 2011 or 2013 as a Scrooge attacking “poor people and the elderly” despite any logic, despite any proof to the contrary.

But I agree: it is time to “sharpen our swords” and not give up. However, we can only depend on ourselves.

We can never depend on a Democrat to stop anything in MAOBama’s agenda.

The Senate provision will likely remain. Stupak and Cao could be no votes, and the bill could still pass. None of the others could care less if the provision was in there. If any other Democrat were willing to vote against the whole bill on that basis, he or she would have said so explicitly without sounding hopeful for a compromise. More likely is that the removal of the “public option” will bring on board some Democrats who voted against the House version of the bill. They will give cover to any other “pro-life” Democrats.

Oh I am not quitting. The Fat Lady hasn’t sang her song yet. As long as Republicans hold a united front, we can win this for the American people.
