Breaking: Cedar Revolution Comes To An End

(Via Hot Air) Allahpundit calls this a bloodless coup, but the blood has yet to flow. Lebanon is now a terrorist state with this Hezbollah takeover and should be treated like one. Najib Miqati is a puppet PM and controled by Syria and Iran:

After days of political wrangling, the candidate supported by Hezbollah and its allies, Najib Miqati, a billionaire and former prime minister, won 68 seats in Lebanon’s 128-member parliament, enough to name the next government in a country as divided as it is diverse. His elevation was a clear victory for Hezbollah, which has ruled out Mr. Hariri’s return to power, and was the culmination of what was already accepted as a fact of life here: that Hezbollah is the country’s pre-eminent military and political force.

So far, the crisis has played out according to the rules of Lebanon’s parliamentary system, and both Mr. Miqati and Hassan Nasrallah, the leader of Hezbollah, went to great lengths to offer a conciliatory message and portray Mr. Miqati as a consensus choice…

“What has happened is virtually a coup d’état, a political coup d’état,” [former PM Saad] Hariri said at his house in downtown Beirut, near the seat of government that he and his team left only days before. “Me and my allies, we will represent the opposition.”…

Hezbollah has seemed to view the tribunal as an almost existential threat, and in his speech Tuesday, Mr. Nasrallah suggested that the issue had forced its hand.

Saad Hariri better get out of town, or he’ll be the first one dead. I plea for him to go into exile as soon as possible.

I mean, Hezbollah was out in force with walkie talkies. People so freaked by the show of force, that some yanked their kids out of school.

I smell a war coming between Sunnis and Shiites in Lebanon. Furious Lebanese Sunnis were already out in force for their “day of rage”.

Read all of Allahpundit’s post for more details. Let just say we are in for another ride in the Middle East.

of in the campaign. This even calls for major action on the part of the president. I hear crickets so far.

    • rbdwiggins

This is a distraction, albeit a very serious development of its own, and it was not unexpected. The end of government subsidies is tearing Iran apart at the seams, and the spotlight needs to be focused elsewhere.

An election in Lebanon was won by a group of full-on hell-bent-for-holy-war peace lovers, backed by another group of even more-than-full-on hell-bent-for-holy-war peace lovers.

The folks that lost the election were supposed to be the moderates – only half-hell-bent-for-holy-war peace lovers.

‘My people’ are blamed for everything the peace lovers don’t feel like draping around the necks of America.

Now iffen I remember my schoolin’ proper, Israel is kinda sorta maybe geographically somewhat close to Lebanon.

    Guess so, eh ?

Meanwhile, down in Jerusalem, there’s a bunch of peace-loving trailer-sized big-time-kilowatt generators at The Temple Mount that have no business being there and IDF is pretty sure ‘something’s up’. But are they doing anything about it ?…… Noooooooooooo. That would be too easy.

I’d restart the “Israel Survival Updates” series here at RedState, but I’m not sure anyone was reading any of it and quite honestly, it took waaaaaaay too much time and all the news added waaaaaaay too much agita to my life. Spent too many hours at the range stress relief center through it all.

With the stuff you come up with, you should have your own news blog.

And I see this as another go round in Lebanon.
I paid attention in the last Lebonese civil war, and this is begining to shape up as such.
Either that or an eventual all out attack on Isreal.
If either of those happen, I wonder which side Obama comes down on, although I have my suspicions.

      • izoneguy

if they are attacked by Lebanon. The only reason there is still a Lebanon is because of George Bush. Bush understood the dynamics in the region. Mr. O – not so much.

were pretty secular, which makes it all the worse: Lebanon was one of the few countries in the region with a functional democracy and a secular tradition (one that Iraq was trying to emulate, I’ll note). I fear that Lebanon’s collapse marks the beginning of the end for democracy in the ME: Turkey seems very close behind, and Iraq’s tentative steps towards democracy will be numbered without significant US aid and support (Afghanistan was never particularly democratic in the western sense to begin with, and not part of the ME). Thank God that Egypt, Jordan, and the Gulf states are not democratic: if they were, they would become just as radical as Lebanon will now be (if not more so in the cause of Saudi), with Egypt under the control of the Muslim Brotherhood and Jordan under the thumb of some demagogue supported by Jordan’s Palestinian community. Unless there is a significant cultural shift receptive of western religious and cultural pluralism and western liberal democracy, the Middle Eastern states, if democratized, will end up just like Lebanon.

      • bk

That would be a disaster. Currently Egypt has at least SOME interest in helping with the southern Gaza border. If the Muslim Brotherhood overthrows Mubarak, that will be an open border for major weapons traffic.

        • izoneguy

And the Muslim Brotherhood is licking it’s chops.

Israel will be getting pushed at both ends.

Will be real interesting to see what Obama does (or doesn’t do).

          • acat

And Israel has the ability to push back hard with, or without, the O.

The scary part for me is that Hillary could, depending on which way the chips fall, come out looking really good here…

          • bk

She’s been invisible under Obama* but in the occasional picture or two I’ve seen she is starting to really show her age. She looks looks old and tired.

*Is it me or are almost all the Cabinet members buried while czars are running everything?

          • Common_Cents

Wouldn’t that be sweet justice on Barry? After all, isn’t that how Barry got elected? Didn’t he eliminate his opponents in state/fed senate races?

A friend of HI Gov Abercrombie recently stated on radio that Neil admits there aren’t any documents on Barack to be found. There might be a document for a Barry Soeterro tho.

I still think Billary is laying low to try and spring a trap on Barry and make him go get some coffee.

“Put that down, coffee is for closers!”

          • acat

Got one opponent disqualified, got anothers’ sealed divorce papers opened up, etc. etc. He’s always been a hit-from-the-blind-side kind of a guy. Chicago school’s like that – it’s not just the head-on attacks ya gotta watch for.

One strategy for the Clintons would be for Hillary to quit in disgust in, say, September 2011 – when people are just starting to come out of their summer-vacation hazes…

Meanwhile, it’s Bill who strokes the levers of the Dem party making sure everyone knows Obama’s actually ineligible, in addition to being a lead weight at the top of the ticket.

Hillary can then, around Halloween, announce her exploratory committee, and see what happens.

All Hillary needs is a spot she can take a stand on, and peel off a traditional Dem-supporting group over something that O does or fails to do… maybe Jews and a failure to defend Israel?

            Just sayin’

            Mew

          • Common_Cents

I guess they’ll see what happens, if they see a good opening to make a challenge they will IMHO. Would they think they’d have a shot in 2016 after 8 yrs of Obama? Or after 4 yrs of a Republican?

Maybe Joe Biden’s “that young man will be challenged” moment will be coming up this year in more ways than one. Especially w/ Barry’s world apology tour hands off policy and all the crap starting to hit the fan overseas. Somethings gonna blow pretty hard.

Who knows, I just wouldn’t be surprised if they tried.

          • acat

First, Hillary will be 4 years older and, as bk pointed out above, she’s not getting any younger. Sorry to say, but appearance matters.

Second, and more importantly, when’s the last time we had two 2-term presidents from the same party back to back? Reagan gave us 1-termer Bush 1.0, Clinton didn’t have a Dem follower, Bush 2.0 didn’t have a Repub follower… Leaving the Executive in the same party for 16 years would be .. hard for me to imagine.

            Mew

          • gekster

His cabinet is hiding from the taxman.
Either that, or they are just figure heads and the real power lies in the unelected and unaproved by Senate czars.

          • bk

Oh wait, perhaps he’ll issue a strongly-worded statement.

        • http://www.redstate.com/etcartman Kenny Solomon

……or as Jim Hoft at Gateway Pundit puts it a bit more succinctly:

More Smart Power…… Hillary Clinton Defends Mubarak Regime On Same Day They Slaughter Protesters In The Street.

The quote below from our Secretary Of State is taken from a joint press conference with Spain’s Foreign Minister and is available on The State Department website.

          Emphasis mine.

“With respect to Egypt, which, as your question implied, like many countries in the region, has been experiencing demonstrations. We know that they?ve occurred not only in Cairo but around the country, and we?re monitoring that very closely. We support the fundamental right of expression and assembly for all people, and we urge that all parties exercise restraint and refrain from violence. But our assessment is that the Egyptian Government is stable and is looking for ways to respond to the legitimate needs and interests of the Egyptian people.

Respond…… Yep, that they did. Looks like they think the Egyptian people need something on the order of cracked skulls and other niceties of Shari’a Law.

Demonstrators clash with Egyptian police in central Cairo. Egyptian police fired tear gas early Wednesday on thousands of protesters in Cairo, as three people died during unprecedented nationwide rallies seeking to end President Hosni Mubarak?s 30-year rule.

I’m guessing Egypt are our peace partners too.

Now I have to get my Israel news from Commentary mag

    • http://www.conservative-outlooks.com ladyimpactohio

Can’t believe Israel let this stuff in at the border. Heck, Israel thought those feminine protective agents in my suitcase coming back from Jordan were explosive devices and pulled them all out for all the world to see. This wasn’t at an airport. This was at the Israeli-Jordanian bus and car passage way.

Something else is up here. When one sees tanks going up and down the streets of Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, one has a great respect for Israel and their protective instincts. We need more info on this. They even have you go through metal detectors when entering the Old City in Jerusalem.

  • bk

We have terrorists even more entrenched in Lebanon, Syria, Iran, and the Gaza Strip than when they entered office, Iran has gone nuclear or is close, and all we hear from the White House and State Dept are that Israel is a barrier to peace.

    Great job!

    • izoneguy

In Tunisa and now Egypt – the whole Middle East is ready to explode and all Obama wants to talk about is “green” jobs. When it does blow – get ready for
a rocking time back in Iraq and a surge of militants swarming Afghanistian.
These events will make the American economy even weaker as oil goes through the roof….

Oh yeah – Obama’s answer is more “green” jobs.

Agence France Presse article via Mr. Breitbart’s site.

The United States on Wednesday levied sanctions against an alleged Lebanese cocaine trafficking ring, with operations spanning Latin America, West Africa, Europe and the Middle East.

The group — led by Ayman Joumaa and including at least nine other people and 19 entities — was said to have laundered proceeds worth as much as $200 million per month.

US citizens and businesses will now be barred from trading with the group and any assets in the United States will be frozen.

Betcha I know why this happened.

    The Mexican cartels got mad.

They got their boy in Mexico City to talk with the dude at 1600 and a ‘nudge’ was made to start the ball rolling and keep their turf clear.
