Lipstick on a Pig

The President of the United States is a man who has succeeded largely by substituting charisma for substance. It’s critically important for him to look like a heavyweight. Understanding this well, the New York Times is obliging Mr. Obama with the headline “Obama Issues Ultimatum to Carmakers,” accompanied by a picture of the Great Man looking stern and powerful by contrast with the non-entities who appear alongside him.

Under the terms of the deal in which GM borrowed emergency funds from the government last December, the company is required to produce a credible operating plan with sharp cost-cutting measures by March 31, or else face a demand to immediately return the funds (thus triggering immediate moves by creditors to liquidate GM). Those of us with eyes knew at the time just how empty a covenant this would turn out to be.

Today, Obama is putting lipstick on the pig. He’s presenting what is called an ultimatum to GM and Chrysler (the beneficiaries of emergency government funds), to shape up or ship out. And they have 60 days to do it. We don’t really know what Obama actually wants to see happen in 60 days. Characteristically, he doesn’t say, which is your cue to add your own writing to his blank slate.

Why am I so cynical? Because the deal was for GM to restructure or die by March 31. Obama just gave them a sloppy wet kiss in the form of a 60-day reprieve, and he wants us to think he was being tough. The only cost that he imposed on GM was the dismissal of CEO Wagoner, whose departure has long been only a matter of time. And I’m betting that 60 days from now, there will be another big dollop of taxpayer funding for GM, accompanied by more harsh words.

And of course, another opportunity to take stern photographs of our Dear Leader.

It's as clear as day...

The Obama administration wanted a car company and now they will have one within a few months. This will give Obama the opportunity to build those fantasy cars with propellers and solar panels on them. Next, he’ll either outlaw or heavily tax Japanese cars so we’ll be ‘forced’ to buy one of his energy efficient cars. No joke, stranger things have and will happen. Wake up folks and read the writing on the walls.

Transparency is evident

It never ceases to amaze me when Obama does one thing and at the very same time says he is doing the opposite. He claims the government doesn’t want to be in the car business - - after firing the CEO, dictating which cars they can and cannot make, and taking over the company via committee.

We are not hearing, no doubt, from his Press secretary who will tell us all that this is NOT a move to take over any companies…. and he will actually expect everyone to believe it.

This whole move by Obama and his administration is to save the UAW…. that’s it. Restructuring by GM and Chrysler would have been done by now, if they were allowed to go forward and file bankruptcy. … all without billions of dollars of taxpayers money and more to come. Bankruptcy would have been quicker, less expensive and would have rid the carmakers of union contracts which would give them a real chance at succeeding.

His administration is transparent all right. We see through it.

I bought a car that got 48 mpg in 1996

tarandfeathers Monday, March 30th at 1:08PM EDT (link)

The problem is that it is a VW TDI manual trans. The greenies have excoriated Diesels for years as being smelly and dirty, but this had a better EPA rating than the best American or Japanese car at the time. Even with that, the car was illegal to buy in California.

So to me, these CAFE standards that are being forced on Detroit are not about emissions or better MPG. If it was about better MPG, we would be using the TDI technology (or similar), and we would be pushing manual transmissions.

In the old days, we called this Marxism

Marcus_Traianus Monday, March 30th at 1:16PM EDT (link)

When one seeks to control the means of production and take it out of the capitalist hands, it is called Marxism. This is nothing more than Obama seeking to replace the profit motive with usefulness. The plan for taxing carbon, producing electric cars and general whims of government intervention will surely closely follow. This will quickly be packaged with limits on so-called executive pay and no tangible concessions for labor (while unions proclaim how much they are suffering). Their product will once again become something nobody really wants and would not otherwise exist in a real capitalist system.

Just like AIG, Obama and his acolytes dumped billions down this hole months ago knowing full well what the result would be. Why not let them go bankrupt at that point- it would have been the sensible thing to do. Instead we have a government managed bankruptcy- which now means labor practices will remain largely unchanged and ridiculous government fiats will be included. Ultimately, that means more of our tax money is wasted.

You are watching history, as the US capitalist system vanishes right before your eyes. Sadly, we have some cheering as the chief ideologue pursues his Marxist dream.

By the way, I was no fan of Wagoneer. But his, and the Directors greatest failure was merely an inability to extract meaningful labor concessions that would permit long term viability. That failure was largely driven by the fact unions knew Obama would cut them the best deal- a fact proven by these latest events.

“Both of our political parties, at least the honest portion of them, agree conscientiously in the same object—the public good; but they differ essentially in what they deem the means of promoting that good. One side believes it best done by one composition of the governing powers; the other, by a different one. One fears most the ignorance of the people; the other, the selfishness of rulers independent of them. Which is right, time and experience will prove.”.Thomas Jefferson

Is this just a scam to push the health care agenda?

bk Monday, March 30th at 3:47PM EDT (link)

Note a couple of key lines in this WSJ article. (emphasis mine)

The Obama’s administration’s leading plan to fix General Motors Corp. and Chrysler LLC would use bankruptcy filings to purge the ailing companies of their biggest problems, including bondholder debt and retiree health-care costs, according to people familiar with the matter.

A key ingredient is getting the UAW to agree to an entirely new labor contract, including major reductions in health-care benefits, according to several people involved in the matter. “That’s the No.1 wildcard here,” one of these people said Monday.

You can see where this is heading. They’ll get the current and former UAW members to agree to ‘draconian’ health care costs, and then enlist ‘help’ from these same folks to push a government takeover of the healthcare system to replace the lost benefits with ‘free’ universal heath care.

How else would you explain Obama’s sudden flip-flop from saying we can’t afford to let them go bankrupt to pushing for bankruptcy?

meant to say draconian health care CUTS

Sorry about that.
