Palin and the Fat Oprah Theory

I’ve read many theories about why various people hate Palin but the one I find most fascinating are the explanations to explain the republican women who relish attacking her. People (mostly men) are surprised at how much “nice” women relish attacking Palin.  Why, there most be a logical, reasonable explanation for it.  I’m here to say, no, it’s just the mean girls being mean.  Rush has been going on about this for awhile and some of his female callers have attempted to explain the Mean Girl phenom to him. The calls and emails are a hoot.

I love Ace of Spades HQ and find his site to be hysterically funny and insightful. Recently, Ace had a detailed and earnest post about his republican women friends. He insisted that they are not Rinos but can’t stand Palin. He earnestly explained how some people just appear to be stupid (unfairly or not) and how they have to prove that they are not stupid to “smart” people. Ace had suggestions on what Palin needs to do to win these women over. (And no, I don’t think Ace or the others hate women).  They just don’t get Mean Girls in the same way that Palin does.  She has succeeded despite the Mean Girls and will continue to do so.  You go, girl!!!

Since I am a heathen, I have no problem calling them out.  I shall explain the Mean Girl (and every woman has an inner Mean Girl) using Sarah Palin and the Fat Oprah theory of success.

I used to listen to the Jamie and Danny Bonaduce radio show on Star 98. Jamie was an attractive blonde woman that specialized in porn chic— i.e. she talked about how much she loved sex, developed her own line of sex toys, cheating on her ex, sleeping her way to the top, etc. So, of course, she was considered brutally honest and nothing was off limits for her. She also loved all things Oprah. She LOVED, LOVED Oprah! So one day during her Oprah love fest the issue of Oprah’s weight came up. Danny was shocked comma shocked when Jaime said she wouldn’t watch Oprah if she ever became skinny. She loves Fat Oprah, hates Skinny Oprah (This is Mean Girl 101). Oprah can’t be rich, successful, skinny and married. That would make her a B—H! If Oprah is fat, women don’t care that she’s rich and successful because “I’m better than her.” Fat Oprah can’t get her man to marry her so “I’m better than her.” If Oprah lost weight and got Stedman to marry her then she would be better than her audience and women would stop watching her show. Danny didn’t believe her and they opened it up to the audience.  Women called in to say how much they loved Fat Oprah and how in their secret heart of hearts they agreed with Jamie that they are better than Fat Oprah. They didn’t like her or watch the show when she was skinny (because then she was a preachy-know-it-all). Oprah is boxed in because her success is dependent on the Mean Girls because Fat Oprah’s core audience is women and gay men.  So long as she has chicken wings but no wedding ring, she is LOVED by women.

So now that you understand the Fat Oprah theory, lets apply it to Palin.

Palin enters the national scene: A former beauty queen appears rocking high heels and looking fabulous after five kids (which implies she has great sex, often) and 20 years of marriage to a HOT manly man who loves and adores her. Not only does she have a fabulous family but she has a great career that she carved out on her own due to sheer will and determination.

Question: How will she treated by the women “who are logically her natural constituency?”

–Male blogger: I am shocked. My female friends are not Rinos but they can’t stand her, so there must be something wrong with her. She must take their complaints seriously. How stupid of her to ignore them!

–Black Redneck: Hate her—I’m surprised that they don’t kill her. Thou shall not suffer a beautiful woman to be smart and happy, too. All over America, women are screeching “The B—H!!! How dare she throw her family and success in our faces?” Watch your back, Palin cause “nice” women will gut you at the first opportunity.

Now, I’m sure that there are some of you saying “ahah!! If you’re right, then Palin will never win them over and so she can never win the general election.” If politics only focused on womens’ issues or gay issues, then you would be right. Palin wouldn’t stand a chance. However, men and women (who can control their inner Mean Girl) are interested in politics. When men are watching, the first rule of Mean Girls comes into play: You can be petty and spiteful to anyone but you can never be PERCEIVED as petty and spiteful. Mean Girls get away with the Fat Oprah behavior because men don’t watch Oprah and their eyes glaze over when women start babbling about Oprah. But when you go outside of womens’ issues, then men do have independent knowledge and they can make their own assessment of situation. For example, men don’t care about women’s shoes and ignore all conversations about shoes. Since Oprah spends lots of time on womens’ shoes, the Mean Girls ruled. Oprah knows very well that her likeability is directly tied to her weight.  This is also why Palin could never be the next Oprah– can you imagine the screeching if Palin sat around talking about all the fabulous things she buys with all her fabulous money while showing off her 50 carat diamond earrings for her audience?  Bats would be wiped out all over the world.

Unfortunately for the Mean Girl, Palin is fabulous on issues that are important to men like the military, energy development, job growth, fishing and hunting. So once Palin starts campaigning, men and women will be able to evaluate her arguments. Then the complaints of the “nice” republican women will start to be perceived, not as “legitimate” concerns but, as the petty refusal of Mean Girls to support a beautiful woman simply because she’s hotter than you. Once that happens, just watch how quickly the “nice” republican women shut up and stop complaining about Palin.

      Good one!!

I like Sarah and can’t stand Oprah no matter what size she is. I identify with Palin and Bachmann because they are the same as I – happily married, conservative, confident women who love their husbands and children (in my case, child) and are loved in return.

By the way, the number of kids you have isn’t necessarily reflective of how great your sex life is. After almost 24 years of marriage and only 1 child, I should know.

I’m middle-aged and have let myself gain WAY too much weight — although even in my trimmest, most athletic days, I was never glamorous like Sarah. Yet I absolutely love her. I’ve never felt the least bit threatened by her, and it’s really hard for me to understand women who do feel that way, even though I know the phenomenon is very real.

I appreciate Palin and Bachmann because they’re pro-life, they’re POSITIVE, and they are not one bit intimidated by the “good ol’ boys”!

I too have noticed the burning hatred of lots of my female friends of both liberal and conservative stripes and couldn’t quite figure it out.

In a similar way I was surprised when two very successful women I know, one a $300K a year business woman and the other a medical doctor in her early sixties, both were observing a woman of their similar age who had not gone to college but had married a local businessman years ago and spent her life in a quite small suburban community, raising her children and sitting by the club’s pool in the summer. Both of these ladies were livid. I mean out of it mad. And why?

They had been told they should go out and have a career and be successful to be happy and here they are late in life, divorced, rich and pissed off that they can’t go to the pool and just lie in the sun when they want to.

Life is hard to understand, but for a man to understand a women , now that requires a miracle.

I think the writer’s comment about the indications that Sarah is having great sex is not just about the number of her kids, but the fact that she is in such great shape after having so many kids. Now certainly there are other ways to get a great figure back after kids, but lots of really good sex is probably one of the main ones.

I am a husband of a… well we will call her an “average” woman of weight, and still very beautiful, but who also tends to be honest when it comes to other women… She and most women out there have this superiority complex that goes one of two ways:

    1) They love her (whoever the woman with “more” may be), listen to her and try to change their lives to more like her, or at least help her cause in whatever way possible. These liked women tend to fall into the fat Oprah scheme, either they are pretty and dumb, or smart and fat, or whatever other combination that gives the average woman a feeling of superiority in some way… or

    2) they hate her only for the sheer fact that she is better than them in one or more ways. It may be weight or looks, but for some it is her marriage, personal life, publicity, brains or any combination of factors that are entirely superficial.

One way or the other I believe Palin will not be able to take a Presidential nomination or election, but at some point should be able to pick up a Congressional spot for Alaska.

Supposedly. Perhaps she’s prepping to take McCain’s seat.

      • http://www.gmsplace.com/ civil truth

She probably has more immediate plans, like 2012 if she wanted to run as AZ senator – since Kyle is retiring, which makes this an open seat.

Or were you being facetious since she was McCain’s running mate? Though the way he treated her, I wouldn’t blame her if she did.

        • wennejunk

Yes, thinking of McCain’s seat. I suspect he retires after this gig is up.

If you ever take note of the kind of women who hate Palin so much, pretty much universally its women who are inferior to her in at least one of the ways discussed in this article. Either they are not as pretty, not as successful or do not have as good of a marriage as her. None of the haters are women of the same stature as Palin. Now, granted, there aren’t many women that are comparable to Palin in terms of career, financial and family success combined with great looks, but of the few that are (ie: Michele Bachmann), I can’t think of any that are Palin-haters.

            Palin is a 10!

            She’s hot!

Sarah Palin is a pro-life feminist.
            Susan B. Anthony was a pro-life feminist.

It’s surmountable though, IMHO. It’s petty and shallow. Gradually people will come to see that they were wrong, that they had unfairly judged her, and that will cause them to like her that much more.

I think what a lot of the people forget in analyzing Sarah Palin’s chances is the process and specifics of becoming President. Yes, if there were a national election held today with all potential candidates, she would lose. But that’s not the way it works. First, you need a base of enthusiastic supporters to form a campaign. Then, you need to win early states. Then you need to keep winning caucuses and primaries around the country Then you face off in a general election against the alternative.

People walk into the voting booth and they can’t register their feelings about your beauty, or your husband, or whatever. It’s vote for this person, or that one. Sarah or Michelle. Sarah or Herman. Sarah or Romney. Sarah or Obama. At each step along the way, I see people putting aside their petty jealousies once faced with the actual, stark choice between her and someone who they disagree with on the issues, someone without the record of accomplishment and integrity, someone they can’t trust to do the right things. Sarah Palin will get the nod each time, even if some are a little pissed off even as they pull the trigger for her.

I got married young, and way before I started following politics. My wife is a just left-of-center Dem and resonable about most issues – except Palin! If I want to see her, or our daughter for that matter, go from zero to B–H in a split second, I just have to say “Palin”. They come unglued and now I know I have provoked their inner Mean Girl. Excellent post and thanks for some enlightenment. I just think Sarah is awesome and would love to see her in the WH. The question is – will enough of the “nice” ladies on our side of the aisle shut the heck up soon enough? We know they never will on the other side…
