ABC News Does Hit Job on Eric Cantor. Claims Cantor Rejects Rush Limbaugh.

Did George Stephanoupolos coordinate this attack with Rahm Emanuel ahead of time?

ABC News thinks it has a big story this morning. They’re highlighting it all over their website.

According to George Stephanopolous, Eric Cantor (R-VA) publicly rejected Rush LImbaugh’s rhetoric.

It is an absolute lie.

Remember, folks, Stephanopolous has daily phone calls with Rahm Emanuel to plot Democrat strategy via ABC News. No doubt this is a coordinated effort to cause a rift in the party where there is none.

It’s also pretty crappy journalism.

Here is how Stephanopoulos plays it on ABC’s website:

During our exclusive interview on “This Week,” Republican Whip Rep. Eric Cantor, R-Va., rejected comments made by Rush Limbaugh at the CPAC conference.

Defending his attacks against President Barack Obama’s economic plans, Limbaugh said Saturday to the conservative conference, “What is so strange about being honest and saying I want Barack Obama to fail if his mission is to restructure and reform this country so that capitalism and individual liberty are not its foundations?”

Cantor today rejected Limbaugh’s rhetoric.

“So the Rush Limbaugh approach of hoping the president fails is not the Eric Cantor, House Republican approach?” I asked.

“Absolutely not,” Cantor said. “And I don’t — I don’t think anyone wants anything to fail right now. We have such challenges. What we need to do is we need to put forth solutions to the problems that real families are facing today.”

Cantor said the Republican Party must change to be more inclusive.

It reads like George Stephanopoulos asked Cantor the question, preceded by Rush’s statement that he hoped Barack Obama failed if “his mission is to restructure and reform this country so that capitalism and individual liberty are not its foundations.”

But that’s not actually what happened.

According to the show transcript, George Stephanopoulos did not bring up Rush’s qualifiers. See here and you’ll see that Cantor actually echoed exactly the premise of Rush’s point:

STEPHANOPOULOS: So the Rush Limbaugh approach of hoping the president fails is not the Eric Cantor, House Republican approach?

CANTOR: George, absolutely not. And I don’t — I don’t think anyone wants anything to fail right now. We have such challenges.

What we need to do is we need to put forth solutions to the problems that real families are facing today. And our common-sense, conservative principles of limited government, and the belief in free markets, and the belief that really opportunity can only be created by the private sector are going to undergird our proposals going forward.

STEPHANOPOULOS: OK. Congressman Cantor, thanks very much for your time this morning.

CANTOR: Thank you, George.

That is a total distortion of both how Rush framed his point — it was not a blanket wish for Obama’s failure, but only failure if his mission is to destroy capitalism and individual liberty — and Cantor’s response.

In fact, in George Stephanopoulos’s post at ABC News, he completely leaves out the bold faced text of Cantor’s statement that I highlighted. Completely leaves it out. Why? Because it directly reinforces the point Limbaugh was making and George would not then have been able to say Cantor rejected Rush Limbaugh’s rhetoric.

Hell, Stephy didn’t even tell Cantor what Rush really said.

We're surprised by this?

No we aren't surprised and that's what makes it obvious that Cantor's main objective in the interview

Mike gamecock DeVine Sunday, March 1st at 1:29PM EST (link)

was not to articulate why Obama’s policies are dangerous and wrong but rather that the news coming out of the interview was not that he agreed with Rush but rather that he rejects the vague failure meme.

His fear of Obama and the media trumps all.

I saw Cantor myself on Hannity this week and he was way too timid in his deference to Obama and his agenda.

Cantor has not yet learned that the drive-by media is the enemy...

conservativemusician Sunday, March 1st at 8:53PM EST (link)

Either that or he is willingly ignoring this fact. The drive-by socialists like Stephy are political terrorists that are every bit as dangerous as the enemies we face in Iraq and Afghanistan. Cantor should also know by now that these types of interviews are always set ups to make conservatives look bad. How many more times are these GOP leaders going to have to go through this before they learn this lesson once and for all?

Why put yourself in this position to begin with...

While Cantor may have gotten around to making Rush’s point, why give Stephy and the MSM the opportunity to take this out of context. Sorry, I don’t feel sorry for Eric. He went along with the media set narrative, and then hoped to make Rush’s points by providing futher context.

Republicans have yet to learn completely how to communicate well and effectively with our enemies in the media. This experience is just another example.

I like Eric Cantor a lot, but I expect more from him than to be drawn into this and then so easily distorted.

You can lay the blame at Stephy’s feet, and I’m all about crying foul, but who out there is going to care and take the time to be thoughtful about the misrepresentation. Sure, we will on blogs like RedState, but that’s not going to cut through and result in accountability or sympathy.

Our spokespeople in the Repub. party have got to get smarter, faster about communicating with the media. Period.

This is really quite depressing when one considers that Cantor is supposed to be one of our stars! - nt

Eric, you know Limbaugh is right

EagleWatcher Sunday, March 1st at 1:20PM EST (link)

It would have been better if Cantor had said “Limbaugh makes a good point and here’s why…”

Why is it the the Dems could rip Bush and accuse him of everything, but the GOP must sit there like trained seals and bark on cue to whatever the Libs throw at them?

Are there any heroes in the GOP? Have they all gone into retirement?

exactly right EW and given that Cantor knows the game and knows what the Drive-bys are trying to get out of him

His answer shows that he is resigned to play the media game by their rules, rather than doing as you suggest and re-framing the issue to go on the offensive.

Cantor may also be trying to distance himself from Limbaugh...

conservativemusician Sunday, March 1st at 8:58PM EST (link)

Because the media looks at Rush as a kook conservative fringe populist who is more entertainer than substance. He does so to his peril. Not sure what he is afraid of by trying to nuance his answers to Stephy. At this point, with the way Obama is lurching so far to the left of even Marx, he should be defending Rush and riding his wave.

Rush and Cantor can fix this tomorrow, and put Steph on the hook

Hell, Stephy didn’t even tell Cantor what Rush really said.

Admittedly, Cantor needs to jump on this first thing in the morning. He needs to be on Rush, and on Fox and Friends, and Hugh Hewitt, explaining exactly what Erick explained in the paragraphs I blockquoted above.

Cantor should mea culpa that, when Steph worded the question as if to imply that Cantor was rejecting Limbaugh per se, he (Cantor) should have refused to answer the question worded that way. He should have clarified immediately that he wasn’t criticizing Limbaugh per se. That was a goof on Cantor’s part.

But it is fixable, and he can fix it tomorrowl.

In fact, it’s an opportunity for us.

Cantor and Limbaugh (and all the rest of us) should wonder aloud, loudly and repeatedly, why George Stephanopholous would spread such a misconception about Cantor’s real meaning.

Gee, we should wonder aloud, why would this former Clinton offical do something like that? Hmmm…

Rush can pound on Steph for three hours tomorrow—and that’s just Monday.

The American people perceive the MSM to be biased. As far as I’m concerned. let’s use this incident as another example of that bias.

Let Steph convince America otherwise.

Let’s put them on defense.

and cc’d Boehner. I sent to Cantor and Boehner today abd told them Rush’s statement was right on the money and they should not be saying they disagree with the wanting Obama to fail statement because if you are a conservative you do want Obama to fail in his plans to remake this country.

let's be real about this...

Jack Sunday, March 1st at 2:41PM EST (link)

Eric Cantor is making the same terrible mistake that Tom DeLay made. He is the whip he needs to be the whip and get his face off national TV. ABC understands that the more Cantor talks the more he will be less effective.

Cantor has to park his ego and get off TV. Let the firebrands go on the air that is what they are for to stir the masses.

Jack- Cantor should not be the face or voice of the Republicans

Scope Sunday, March 1st at 4:37PM EST (link)

I was really dissapointed with his TV time when the first TARP mess came up. Remember Pelosi made her partisan pitch right before the vote, and it caused the Republicans in the House to reject it? Cantor couldn’t get in front of the camera quick enough to show a piece of paper (probably the Pelosi speech) and wave it around. He never said anything bad about the bill they were going to vote on, only Pelosi’s partisan approach with her statement. I personally don’t see Cantor as a good speaker, but, he also misses on the message. Jindal got creamed because his style was not up to par, but the substance of what he said was right on. Cantor seems to miss on both. How is it that so many of us little people knew that TARP was bad, and explained nothing of what it was supposed to accomplish, except to give Paulson free reign, but Cantor and the rest of the Republicans in the House and Senate were as clueless as the plan itself? Cator is my Rep, sometimes he makes me proud like keeping the House from voting yes on the Stimulus, but other times, I wish he would just close his pie hole.

Reframe and hit the talking points

red4ever Sunday, March 1st at 5:56PM EST (link)

You see, Republicans are just too darn nice. When asked a question, we politiely answer the question asked. Instead, we need to answer the question we want asked. Reframe what was asked into what should have been asked. Then answer that question from the talking points. Dems do it all the time. You can’t get an answer to a question because they just want to make their point. We just need to lay out our case, not the case the MSM wants us to make.

The hottest places in hell are reserved for those who, in times of great moral crisis, maintain their neutrality.
