According to a recent Pew poll, voters self-identify as conservatives about 37% of the time, which works out to about twice as many conservatives as Republicans and significantly more than Democrats (I think they came in at 27%).

Sure it will. It will give us a consistent voice that will win elections. Moderates don't win tranformational elections. They squeak by in marginal states and live like parasites on those who do win transformational elections. Reagan was the first and I believe only transformational election in my lifetime. The Republican party ran away from him in 1976, and as soon as he was out of office again started running away from him again, with the sole exception of the Contract wirh America. Reagan won substantive and landslide elections, so did the Contract with America. The rest of the elections have followed the moderate mantra and have been purely defensive fights to protect moderate seats. And all of those "moderate" victories have been phyretic victories that cost us sustatinable seats. Most of the electorate figure if you can't tell the difference between a moderate and a Dem, you might as well vote for the real thing.

As for moderates feeling welcome, well political parties can do worse. They can make their base not feel welcome in the party the base created.

For the left, there is no differentiation between person, philospohy, and political stance. To challenge their politics is to launch a personal attack. Since their politics must be challenged, there is no way to avoid their definition of personal attack. So I say let the suck it up and get over it.

If Tyra Banks can teach fashion models how to side step these issues of a reality tv show, it should be old hat for accomplished hands at legislative battles. That these so-called moderates continue to fall into shuch "traps" is simply one more reason to remove them from the list of front pagers for the GOP.

I too have had moments with the half empty glass. Your prayers are heard and are being answered. That answer may not come in exactly the form or fashion we seek but we are heard and He will answer according to His will and way.

After reading some of the mass media's butt polishing of Newt, Powell, and Ridge yesterday and over night the one thing I noticed was missing was any coherent argument against Mr. O' and the Dems policies. It was all just a bunch of "can't we all just get along" mush and an abdication of all that the GOP used to represent. Honestly, and I said this to Rush last year when Newt was interviewed about his comments that the Reagan Era was over, that Newt is trying to position himself as moderate of the GOP just as Mr. O' did for the Dems. No one is willing to at least try to make a stand on the most simple platform of all... the US Constitution.

In between all the bombastic and faux platitudinous comments Rush uses to illustrate the absurdity of all US politics (the left happened to be more absurd until lately) the one area that he consistently revolves around is the continual breach of public trust in protecting our freedoms by politicians. Our RINOs in the GOP are just the latest incarnation of governing towards oblivion instead of prosperity. The only truth that dribbled out of Newt and Powell's political salivations this weekend was that the GOP is in danger of disintegrating. If it cannot find its way back to governing and leading from the most influential document in human history, then let it die.

I've been a Republican for more years than I want to admit but this current GOP leadership, during the most critical junction of governing philosophies in US history, is severely wanting. I pray nightly for leadership within the GOP but as long as the current players listen to the bantering of the mass media they are hopelessly lost. The American people need someone that will give them their country back and be bold enough to tell the rest of the world to go fly a kite. Currently, I do not see this coming from within the GOP. Where of God is your leader in our time of distress!?

Is as desperate and sick an individual as he is. Rush is not shrill. His voice is too deep to be, first of all. Second, unlike Ridge, he is a talented articulator of words and ideas. As such, his show is packed with actual information. Not attacks or shrillness. Plenty of that on Air America. Ridge's rise to recent media hype is due to his repetition of this 'shrill' scolding and now in connection with the name Rush Limbaugh. Rush has identified 'country club republicans' as that group which controls what's left of the GOP. It's not Michael Steele or anyone else. It's just a small jobs bank for persons with serious personal problems and character issues. Knowing their haughtiness has caused the downfall of this country doesn't seem to bother them in the slightest. Whoever pushed for Ridge in Pa. must be part of this country club group. Every one of whom is a complete embarrassment as it's obvious they have no plan for the future except to make sure we don't have one.

obama has gotten away with destroying the housing industry,
obama has gotten away with destroying the banking industry, and
obama has gotten away with destroying the auto industry.
It time to fight back and save this nation. Call obama what he is a LIAR for the LAST 2 Years.
I think all Senators and Comgressman who have been office for 24 years or longer should RESIGN in SHAME for allowing the rape of the United States Taxpayers.
Reid and Peloski Need to Resign immediately.
Enron officials are in Jail for raping the taxpayers and acts committed by obama, schummmmmmmmer, dodd, frank, reid, and peloski.
Its time to throw out the thugs.

to play up the Republican in-fighting -- yet Diaries like this (Erick took the bait) play right into their (MSM) hands..... ALL INVOLVED should be taking your advice.... Republican Politicians MUST ALL deflect the questions as you (and I have pointed out the same elsewhere) in the nature/spirit of Reagan's 11th and then go on to "WE want to focus on the trouble facing this Nation as Democrats try to .... " this, that, the other thing, etc...... They MUST STOP falling into these traps (of course, I don't think Powell will, he wants Obama to succeed) and employ the appropriate strategy of dealing with them (we put forth) and that THEY ALL KNOW to be the right way to deal with it/this!!!!!!

And DIARISTS HERE AT REDSTATE need to equally shape up and put forth Diaries, that can/are STILL CRITICAL but in more constructive manners to remind our Officials they are NOT using an effective strategy and that we expect better of them... and I will keep reminding RedStaters that I expect BETTER/MORE of them!!! You can criticize in an effective manner while still ensuring people know the door is open to work on those common GOP (still Conservative) Platform related issues and governance.

AS IS EVERY COMMENT/DIARY I PUT FORTH... IT IS ALL ABOUT EFFECTIVE STRATEGY!

or claim the persons who clearly are dragging the GOP down with their dem lite views. I agree with others who have written that the electorate will choose the dem when given the choice of a dem or dem lite. Powell is dem lite. Ridge may well be also.

Bill Bennett - as drug czar - thought we were winning the war on drugs but, like the dems wanted to do in Iraq - we stopped fighting and allowed politics to rule the day. As a side note - There are many agents who have stayed the course and continued the fight.

When Ridge was governor of Pennsylvania; he got into a pi**ing contest with the union that represents the Pennsylvania State Police-while they can perform useful services on occasion-they are largely deployed to issue summary citations for speeding-which is more about revenue than public safety-or else they'd be VISIBLE to PREVENT speeding and would focus as much on the reckless driving on I-80, 81 & 83 as speeding. Just as dangerous, but so much harder to prove in a court.

In any case, Ridge who ran as a law and order guy-was shown exactly who the boss was when the PSP went on a ticket strike and showed him who was boss. Money screams.

If Ridge has so much fight-he should've picked a broo-hah-hah with Arlen, not Rush. Had Bush not made him DHS secretary, he'd have just been the governor of a state whose economic vitality is attested to by the number of young people leaving for places where they can make enough to live independently, not just hanging out with mom & dad.

When Ridge was governor of Pennsylvania; he got into a pi**ing contest with the union that represents the Pennsylvania State Police-while they can perform useful services on occasion-they are largely deployed to issue summary citations for speeding-which is more about revenue than public safety-or else they’d be VISIBLE to PREVENT speeding and would focus as much on the reckless driving on I-80, 81 & 83 as speeding. Just as dangerous, but so much harder to prove in a court.

In any case, Ridge who ran as a law and order guy-was shown exactly who the boss was when the PSP went on a ticket strike and showed him who was boss. Money screams.

I am on the same wavelength as you are. I should have said that my comment header was to Ridge and what he should have said. All of this allowing the media to bait the Republicans into turning on allies is ridiculous. It is an attempt of the media to create infighting in the Republicans while shading over the fact that Pelosi has been somewhat isolated herself and created infighting amongst her party. Ridge should concentrate on the issues not what Rush said, more like addressing what Obama said. Do not take the bait and reverse the accusation to the MSM asking the question. That is "I am sorry "reporter's name" but I refuse to answer a question like that, that question is an interruption of the more important damning policies that our elected officials are enacting right now."

That is how all Republicans faced with the Limbaugh question should respond. Do not accept the question or premise as a legitimate question that deserves a response from "me".

Who spend most of their time and effort sticking knives in your back and siding with the opposition. We lost the last election because we did not have a credible conservative candidate. We lost congress because our folks in the house and senate started spending like Democrats. The problem is people who think and believe like we Redstaters but can't find anyone on the ballot they believe they can trust with the country's future or their money.
