They just don’t get it - free healthcare isn’t free! Nor are any of the “free” things government offers. WE pay for them. I am a public high school graduate (although also a private, Catholic college graduate) and even I understood these things after high school.

as much as I think
cannedjam Friday, July 3rd at 1:33PM EDT (link)Powell is a sell out, Independents respected him, and Democrats embraced him when he endorsed Obama. Powell speaking out against Obama’s policies now, does more to change the minds of Independents and Democrats than Rush or any other perceived partisan who was consistently critical.
The more people who openly supported Obama, like Buffet, Kramer and Powell, who now express serious doubts about his policies do more to damage his agenda than those who never supported him in the first place (no mater how hypocritical it is perceived).
I welcome any criticism of Obama, especially from those who supported him.

ddlbb Monday, July 6th at 7:26AM EDT (link)what powell had to say in the election. so did many independents. conservatives…not so much, since we knew that the general was not a conservative and could see his motives.
now he has ruined his credibility with these independents and squishy gop’ers. he shows himself as just wanting to be on the winning team, in the popular clique, with the race-transcendent crowd. (tribute to w.a. on that last sentence.)
so who still thinks general powell is a big deal? african-americans, who called him a sell-out during his service to president bush? liberals, who hate america’s military greatness and partly blame powell for his plea to the u.n. to drag us into iraq? the obama administration, who no longer has a need for this turncoat?
i’m thinking that his endorsement of president obama wasn’t the good career move that he thought it was.
Ruined his credibility? Not so much.

“The people want their problems solved,” Powell also says in the interview. “And very often, it’s government that has to do that. So let’s have good government, effective government, whether you call it limited or not.”
The only time government needs to solve our problems is after government has caused the problem in the first place. Get government out of our way and watch what we can do!
“If you love wealth more than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, depart from us in peace. We ask not your counsel nor your arms. "Government that works"
Menlo Friday, July 3rd at 2:47PM EDT (link)That’s the philosophy of the dictators who run places like China and North Korea. Their government certainly “works.” Maybe Powell should take a slow boat to China where his views are better represented.
As seen with Sandra Day O’Connor, doing “whatever works” is a way of disposing of the nation’s core values, our freedom, and most importantly, our Constitution.
“Guess which party these big insurance companies favor? Big companies love big government.” -Ann Coulter

True enough
tanstaafl1019 Wednesday, July 8th at 4:52PM EDT (link)But viewed in context of some of Gen. Powell’s more recent statements about people wanting more government in their lives, I get the idea that it’s less about government working in the way that it SHOULD (i.e. facilitating Americans’ abilities to go about their lives unhindered and unencumbered by bureaucracy) and more about government working in the way the Obama administration apparently envisions (it works because it’s the right way, the only way and if you can’t see that you must be an idiot).
Interestingly, the few things the government seems to do really well (defense, for example, as you pointed out) often align with the responsibilities of government as laid out by the Founders. Coincidence? I think not.

billg Saturday, July 4th at 12:54AM EDT (link)here we all thought that the General was an honorable man who rose from the lower ranks to the heights of the most high and mighty. I have read that he gave the maximum amount allowed to McCain and then just a short time before the election came out in support of Obama. He didn’t see the deceit in the eyes of Obama; he was lied to by the CIA; he didn’t know about his deputy Sec of State outing Valerie Plame; he doesn’t lose his place on the social lists of Washington to miss any top cocktail parties and social dinner events. Well, let me tell you what really is there; General Powell voted for Barack Obama just like many others, he is a racists and voted because of the color of his skin! If he were truly a man of honor he would not have endorsed Obama and went quietly into the voting booth without saying anything. Yes, General Powell is a racists, just like David Duke and the KKK. He voted for a man he knew wasn’t fit to be our President like a good “yellow dog Democrat”. Challenge that if you can, General Powell!
