But viewed in context of some of Gen. Powell's more recent statements about people wanting more government in their lives, I get the idea that it's less about government working in the way that it SHOULD (i.e. facilitating Americans' abilities to go about their lives unhindered and unencumbered by bureaucracy) and more about government working in the way the Obama administration apparently envisions (it works because it's the right way, the only way and if you can't see that you must be an idiot).

Interestingly, the few things the government seems to do really well (defense, for example, as you pointed out) often align with the responsibilities of government as laid out by the Founders. Coincidence? I think not.

i take a pre-1937 view of the constitution myself, but the national govt is supposed to accomplish certain things under the constitution (e.g., common defence), and shouldn't it do those things as well as possible?

As it is he's an embarrassment to everyone who ever wore a uniform. A worse Traitor than Shinseki or Clark.

His statement makes me want to vomi.:
“The people want their problems solved,” Powell also says in the interview. “And very often, it’s government that has to do that. So let’s have good government, effective government, whether you call it limited or not.”

The only time government needs to solve our problems is after government has caused the problem in the first place. Get government out of our way and watch what we can do!

First of all the only people he's real got any cred with are the leftists in the MSM and the voters who only pay attention 72 hours before they cast their ballot.

Note that he didn't say "I was wrong." He mumbled some crap about spending too much. Those same people don't care how much we spend as long as taxes go up on corporations and the rich. If there's a shortfall it will be the fault of the Evil Republicans who serve the Rich.

As far as Obama is concerned, he doesn't need Powell, the general served his purpose and can now be safely cast aside.

what powell had to say in the election. so did many independents. conservatives...not so much, since we knew that the general was not a conservative and could see his motives.

now he has ruined his credibility with these independents and squishy gop'ers. he shows himself as just wanting to be on the winning team, in the popular clique, with the race-transcendent crowd. (tribute to w.a. on that last sentence.)

so who still thinks general powell is a big deal? african-americans, who called him a sell-out during his service to president bush? liberals, who hate america's military greatness and partly blame powell for his plea to the u.n. to drag us into iraq? the obama administration, who no longer has a need for this turncoat?

i'm thinking that his endorsement of president obama wasn't the good career move that he thought it was.

I honor Gen. Powell for his service, but this certainly proves he lacked the judgement to ever be president.

Obama is doing exactly what he said he was going to do and this was obvious to any thinking person before the election.

The fact that Gen. Powell and so many other Americans were blinded by Obama's charisma instead of looking at his core beliefs still sends chills down my spine.

The yellow male bit the black male's tale a couple of weeks ago. Don't know what started it, they usually get along, but all of a sudden, there was a black and yellow furball and the black one came out of it with his tail bitten through. Bear in mind these are BIG cats, twenty-five pounders, so they can do damage. So, off to the vet we go and I get to make a $200 and change contribution to the vet's kid's college fund over a cat fight. I want National pet health insurance!

here we all thought that the General was an honorable man who rose from the lower ranks to the heights of the most high and mighty. I have read that he gave the maximum amount allowed to McCain and then just a short time before the election came out in support of Obama. He didn't see the deceit in the eyes of Obama; he was lied to by the CIA; he didn't know about his deputy Sec of State outing Valerie Plame; he doesn't lose his place on the social lists of Washington to miss any top cocktail parties and social dinner events. Well, let me tell you what really is there; General Powell voted for Barack Obama just like many others, he is a racists and voted because of the color of his skin! If he were truly a man of honor he would not have endorsed Obama and went quietly into the voting booth without saying anything. Yes, General Powell is a racists, just like David Duke and the KKK. He voted for a man he knew wasn't fit to be our President like a good "yellow dog Democrat". Challenge that if you can, General Powell!

There's no need for him anymore, his purpose has been served.

The 'Uncle Tom' monikers will get dusted off and brought out of storage because, after all, he's not a real black man - remember?

Colin Powell has simply become an unelected, African-American clone of John McCain.

When the left doesn't need him anymore, he'll make noise like a Red-State GOP leader (ie, like right now). When his own party needs him in a crises, he'll stab them in the back and run into the open arms of an adoring media.
