BREAKING: Pataki Endorses Hoffman CONFIRMED

I am told reliably, but have not yet confirmed, that Governor George Pataki endorsed Doug Hoffman tonight at a Conservative Party event.

As Matt Drudge would say: Developing . . .

If this is so, this is huge. Pataki routinely won NY-23 by huge margins. He remains quite popular up there.

UPDATE: IT IS CONFIRMED. Gov. George Pataki has endorsed Doug Hoffman for the United States Congress.

Pataki’s statement:

Statement from Governor George E. Pataki

As someone personally engaged in the way of life in the Adirondacks and Northern New York, I’m deeply concerned about the course of our nation and the outcome of the election in the 23rd Congressional District.

Simply put, we cannot afford to give another vote to Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid we cannot afford another vote for higher taxes, we cannot afford another vote for government run health care and we absolutely cannot afford another vote to take away from hard working men and women the right to secret ballot.

That is why tonight, I’m proud to endorse Doug Hoffman, a Republican, running on the Conservative line for Congress in the 23rd Congressional District.

Doug Hoffman will stand up to Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid. He will fight for all the residents of northern New York. He will fight for our proud servicemen and women at Fort Drum, our dairy farmers in Lowville and our manufacturers in Plattsburgh.

As a businessman, and as a life-long resident of the North Country Doug Hoffman understands the need to lower taxes on working families, the need to stand tall against terror and he won’t back phony stimulus programs that fail to create the jobs we need and leaves a mountain of debt to our children.

When elected to Congress Doug will work to reduce our taxes, he will stand tall against those who despise our freedoms and he will be a vigilant stalwart against those who would substitute government programs for individual initiative.

And Doug Hoffman can win.

I urge all the voters of the 23rd Congressional District – Republican Democrat, Independent and Conservative to come out and vote for Doug Hoffman for Congress.

Hoffman with open arms if he wins…a bit too late

I would disagree on 'too late.'

Moe Lane Thursday, October 29th at 9:12PM EDT (link)

I want the win. ‘Win’ is defined as ‘they get the bloody point;’ if the leadership learns the right lessons from this, that’ll do.

Agree

Neil Stevens Thursday, October 29th at 9:13PM EDT (link)

I haven’t gotten the feeling from the NRCC that they’re anti-conservative, the way the NRSC seems to be a tool for handing out post-2008 recriminations.

I want them to get their minds right and work with them well and successfully.

So do you two think that they are this easily trainable?

janis Thursday, October 29th at 9:21PM EDT (link)

Or do we have to carrot and stick them every single time. Fighting with the other side is pretty strenuous as it is, I’d rather not have to headbutt my own purported side, too.

You don't have to headbutt

Neil Stevens Thursday, October 29th at 9:32PM EDT (link)

But you have to be alert.

Until enough of us are *in* the party apparatus, this is the price we pay for being slack until now.

Well put...

MacAoidh Thursday, October 29th at 10:05PM EDT (link)

…we conservatives are too ready to pick up our toys and go home, while the apparatchiks never go anywhere. We allow them to wait us out, and as a result we constantly have to fight these battles.

It’s a crappy reality, but it’s the only one we’ve got. We have to outlast the apparatchiks this time.

Moe Lane Thursday, October 29th at 9:32PM EDT (link)

Then we need to make our stove cherry-red with heat.

janis Thursday, October 29th at 9:41PM EDT (link)

Because these people need some serious scorch marks to get the idea that we won’t tolerate this. I’d be quite happy to hear something from someone on the inside of the NRCC bunker to the effect that they won’t be so blithe about ignoring us the next time.

What I’d really like to hear is that they reflexively wet their pants when they hear the phrase, “Say, did you see that article on RedState by Erick Erickson today?”

Not just that...

MacAoidh Thursday, October 29th at 10:06PM EDT (link)

…we have to KEEP that stove hot. Our problem is we let it get cold too damn often.

The NRCC didn't pick Dede, the local party apparatus did.

The_Gadfly Friday, October 30th at 8:41AM EDT (link)

Yeah, I’d be happier if the NRCC, Newt and the rest of the professional pols were focused only on attacking the Dem, but the bottom line for the NRCC is that their chartered responsibility is to push the Republican party. I’d bet that in off the record, no attributable statements that wouldn’t even appear in a blog as ‘in off the record conversations’, most of the folks at the NRCC would spit nails like a chain gun about the poor candidate they’ve been saddled with supporting. And I would fully support a re-examination of how they support Republican candidates so they didn’t have to do this in the future.

Now I fully support stringing up Newt and the rest of the professional pols who are supporting Dede on the metaphorical tree, just as long as we all remember there are laws against stringing them up on physical trees.

We’ve been called racists enough now that it shouldn’t bother us any more.

If NY23 was a beat down for Conservatives, what do you call what happened to Progressives in NJ and VA?

You haven't been paying attention.

NightTwister Friday, October 30th at 8:46AM EDT (link)

The NRCC was involved (behind the scenes) in the selection of DeDe.

Actually

redtillimdead Friday, October 30th at 3:07PM EDT (link)

The NRCC wanted another candidate to be chosen, businessman Matt Doheny, because he quickly raised $300k before being selected, and donated $500k of his own money, so they could save money, but the party didn’t care.

Nancy Pelosi can kiss my asstroturf.

So?

NightTwister Friday, October 30th at 3:49PM EDT (link)

That doesn’t negate what I said. Go shill for the NRCC somewhere else.

Actually, it does.

The_Gadfly Monday, November 2nd at 9:34AM EST (link)

It clearly states the NRCC didn’t pick the extreme leftist. Mostly the NRCC has actually done a good job of advancing a fairly large number of conservative candidates. This is the work of a few people who are unfortunately highly placed within the organization. Which is why Erick is advocating so strongly that those people and only those people be held accountable. Back in the Clinton years I didn’t like it when Newt walked the plank for what was clearly Trent Lott’s failure to hold the Senate. At the time Newt* was walking as well as talking conservative. It’s important not to blast everybody in the organization because of the failures of a few. That’s how we destroy the party.

*I wouldn’t vote for Newt now because of the mess he has made of his personal life since then, as well as liberal positions he has taken. But on the weight of the evidence at the time, it was Trent who should have walked.

We’ve been called racists enough now that it shouldn’t bother us any more.

Okay, I'll take all of that back.

The_Gadfly Friday, October 30th at 8:53AM EDT (link)

Just read the link below about one person in the NRCC setting up Dede to be the winner of the local race. If true, he needs to be bounced out so hard he never lands another political job with any Republican anywhere in the country, not even somebody running for dog catcher.

Newt's Story Changes:

UpLateAgain Thursday, October 29th at 9:26PM EDT (link)

Newt acknowledged that the information he related on the nomination process that resulted in Scozzafava’s nomination was in error:

http://www.tcotreport.com/wholiedtonewt.html

In a blog posting by Dan Riehl (Update: Exclusive: How The NRCC Bungled NY - 23), a plausible sounding explanation of how Scozzafava got the nomination is delineated:

http://www.riehlworldview.com/carnivorous_conservative/2009/10/how-the-nrcc-bungled-ny-23.html

When I read things like this, I become ever more convinced that principle has to take precedence over party.

You never never never actually need a gun, until you need a gun, and then nothing else will do.

At least he's admitting he was wrong...

MacAoidh Thursday, October 29th at 10:08PM EDT (link)

…I’ll take that admission at face value, and I suggest the rest of us do as well. We’re going to need Newt’s talents in the coming months.

I agree.

UpLateAgain Thursday, October 29th at 10:59PM EDT (link)

My intent was not to slam Newt, but to show how dangerous blindly adhering to party politics can be in this day and age. I’m like a former smoker that now disdains smoking in others. I’ve spent my adult life voting the party line even when I had to hold my nose while doing so.

My logic was that if you vote for a Democrat, no matter how decent he/she might seem to be, sooner or later they would have to tow the party line and it could be very costly.

I think that dynamic was valid for most of my adult life. I also think the paradigm is changing… thanks to Mr. Obama.

Now, conservatism comes first, and party loyalty has to be earned.

You never never never actually need a gun, until you need a gun, and then nothing else will do.

I'm going to vote the party line almost exclusively...

MacAoidh Thursday, October 29th at 11:05PM EDT (link)

…if for no other reason than to vote against the Democrat.

But when a guy like Hoffman comes along who is clearly a better choice for the true conservative, and has the added benefit of a legitimate chance to win, we should grab at that brass ring.

Purifying the Republican Party is not about kicking the moderates out. It’s about keeping them from controlling the party.

After Palin endorsed him, he climed from behind the pack to in front. THEN Palenty jumped on the endorsement bandwagon to glom onto HER starpower!

Well, the takeaway there is that Pawlenty

recognizes her star power. And so do lots of others who’d rather just ignore it as some aberration of the rednecks in the party. They will find out one way or the other that “We, the People” means exactly that. Not “We the Politicians.”

Pataki jumping in would pretty much be the election, no?

Hoffman winning this in an ass-beating could be colossal.

Hoffman has the Big Mojo.

I noticed that Obama is staying away from the District. That sounds to me like the D’s want their money guy out of the race. Were I the Dems, I would put Barack in NJ, big time.

Were I Palin, I would go in to the District to give Doug one last big push. And to count coup. A nice big rally before election day. I’m not sure there’s enough time, but Sarah is into surprises.

Unfortunately, no

aesthete Friday, October 30th at 2:26PM EDT (link)

There’s some bad blood between Guiliani and the Conservative party. The NY Conservative Party typically nominates a candidate that fits their aims rather than running their own; their candidate for the special election in NY-23 was a function of there not being a conservative in the race. Essentially, they split with Rudy on abortion, and ran candidates against him. The Liberal Party (the progressive counterpart to the conservative party) in turn nominated Guiliani as their choice for mayor of NYC, mostly because of the Conservative Party’s opposition (though as a result of Guiliani’s record and support of the War on Terror, they’ve pretty much disowned him). Hopefully, Guiliani will be the better man and go ahead and endorse Hoffman: after all, Hoffman’s not simply defined by the Conservative party, and is demonstrably the better candidate.

So we've got McDonnell up by double digits in VA,

and Hoffman pulling strongly into the lead in NY 23, which last week Fox reported the Dems were looking to as the tie breaker for the governors races.

Corzine would have Sarah in every ad, and that would kill him in NJ. She kinda endorsed him, but did not make it super public, and I’ve only seen like 1 or 2 articles on it.

I think so..

Go Hoffman - Go NY-23

Jesse V Thursday, October 29th at 10:27PM EDT (link)

Its up to the good people of NY-23 now. They have the momentum, they have America’s support! Its their time to shine and its up to them. to be the beacon on which we all show a united front.

Its the last stand before the big battle. This is the shot heard around the World! Come’on NY-23 makes us all proud. Lets start beating back the socialist scourge that has infiltrated our great land!

Let us stand proudly beside you as you claim the first victory in the battle to take back our America!!!!!!!! Let us stand triumphantly with you as you proudly proclaim that “We the People” still rule this land!

Let us stand hand in hand with you, as you, NY-23, make it known to the socialist/looters in Washington that they no longer rule us but that “We the People” are the sovereign rulers of America!

We’re behind you! Show the rest of the Country what we are all made of and what we all believe is best and right for America!

Jesse V, remember that story of the "Little Engine That Could?"

“I think I can. I think I can.” Classic children’s story of motivation and optimism. Most well known version today was by Watty Piper, (a pseudonym for publisher Platt & Munk) and there have been various other versions. The NY-23 race reminds me of this.

Thats HUGE!! Great news! Pataki, plus the NRCC saying they welcome him and acknowledging he may be the best candidate, along with their advertising switching back to focus on Owens= Hoffman is the front runner!
BTW, wasn’t Al D’Amato supposed to say who he was supporting last night, and wasn’t it supposed to be Hoffman? Anyone know what happened to that?

Glad, but stunned. It’s very, very risky. If Hoffman wins, nobody will hold it against him, but it clearly angers certain local party people that Pataki will need if he runs for Senate.

I wonder if this means he’s not running. Or that he is and he wants to mend fences with the right. I honestly don’t know.

Anyhow, it’s brave as hell.

Hope this wins it for Hoffman.

I do think this’ll “cover over a multitude of sins” as it were if Pataki decides to run for Senate..

livingfortruth Friday, October 30th at 7:49AM EDT (link)

On Glen Beck last Saturday, Glen stated, “So sort of the “The Republican party left you, you did not leave it” (They left 20 years ago or more for me, you have heard the term (”democrat lite”.) To which Hoffman replied, “Yeah.”

I find it interesting the Rush has for almost since he started on the national broadcast winced at the idea of a third party, the fix it attitude, yet Reagan, whom Rush loves, LEFT WHEN IT WAS OBVIOUS THAT THE DEMS WERE NOT GOING TO CHANGE. We have reached that point. IF Rush and Hannity were to endorse the Constitution party, they could be party makers. How long do you nurse a dead head?

The Republican Party tried to throw Hoffman under the bus. He has a love a FREEDOM like William Wallace and would not stay in the way of the bus, crawled out of the way, and now good people are helping in his campaign to help his people, the people of the 23rd New York.

This is a special election and Hoffman

Steph C Friday, October 30th at 9:16AM EDT (link)

said that if he wins this election he’ll be running as a Republican in 2010. Get off the third party meme. This is not a trend to follow. The time for a third party is not now and may never be because it looks like we’re winning the debate against the squishes.

Besides, where would we go? Third parties are a dime a dozen and none of them have much organization to them. They look good on the surface… sometimes… but that’s all it is: a veneer covering the total lack of coherence.
