Complete this Sentence: I support Duncan Hunter for President Because__________

This is the third in a series of blog posts, asking supporters of each GOP presidential candidate to state why they support their man. The first two are here:
"I support Rudy Giuliani for President because...",, (71 comments at the time of this posting);
and here:"I support Mike Huckabee for President because ________."

There seemed to be far less interest in Huckabee, drawing just 20 coments at the time of this posting, many of them negative or sarcastic, despite my request. Does this mean anything?

Today, it's the turn for Duncan Hunter supporters. Remember, the goals are 1) to say what's good about our candidates; and 2) to get a feel for what GOP activists think is important. So please don't go negative (and that includes sarcasm, e.g. "I support Huckabee because I want higher taxes), and don't debate. We just want to hear why supporters favor their guy.

So, Duncan Hunter fans: Complete this sentence: I support Duncan Hunter for President because________.

I'm not campaigning for him because he doesn't have any chance. If he had any ghost of a chance, he would be my pick. But Thompson has most of his good points and could conceivably get elected.

1) He is fiscally and socially conservative as well as strong on defense. His core principles are stated here

That doesn't mean I agree 100% with him, in particular I have disagreements with his trade policies, which are too protectionist for my tastes. But across the board, he's got the fullest set of conservative views and he's not afraid to spell them out.

2) He articulates well his views

3) His personal life reflects conservative values: he hasn't traded in his wife for another model, and he keeps his pants on. He was a Vietnam veteran; his son has served two tours in Iraq.

4) He has been in the forefront of supporting the Border Patrol agents Compean and Ramos. That was one of the things that initially got my attention about him.

5) He has maintained his seat in what was at least at the time of his first election a 2:1 Democratic district (may have change with redistricting, I don't know), demonstrating that he can sell conservatism to non-Republicans.

And Rightly So!

Why doesn't Duncan Hunter have a higher chance of being the Republican nominee? He has good, or at least acceptable positions on all issues. Maybe it's ignorance - he was an unknown quantity for me until now.

If he is the one being sworn in as president in January 2009, that is fine with me.

I'm not sure, either.

Maybe it's that he's "just" a congressman (which has doomed all of his fellow-congressmen's campaigns, too)?

I know a LOT of folks really like him most (myself included), but for whatever reason, he hasn't caught on. Money?

His lack of support nationally is why I'm voting for Fred instead of him... but a Thompson/Hunter ticket would thrill me more than words.

I support Duncan Hunter for President because he is socially conservative, fiscally conservative, and conservative on defense. (Unlike Giuliani, Huckabee, and Paul) Not only that, but he has always been conservative on all three fronts. (Unlike Romney and, to a lesser extent, Thompson). He is also more conservative on immigration than McCain without being crazy like Tancredo.

Of course, I support Huckabee, and maybe I'll go back and post on that diary now.

in his first six months. This is an issue on which President Bush has really dropped the ball. The fence has been approved. It's time for the executive branch to build it and start enforcing our borders properly.

I believe Duncan Hunter when he says he will get that done. Other than that, I don't have much. He is a candidate that never really got any traction and likely won't draw many votes.

He has an impecable history not as a lobbyist, liberal mayor, liberal governor or nutty fruit-bat (guess who I'm thinking of).

He is a strong socon, a strong fiscon, and he's willing to address China when we've ignored the egregious wrongs China has done since '89 (Tiananmen Square anyone?). I don't disagree with a single one of his principles ( http://www.gohunter08.com/inner.asp?z=4 ) although I may hold a different order of priorities.

I'd gladly support Duncan Hunter, except he just doesn't stand a chance. I wish he would knock off one of the liberal California senators. Preferably Babs the Boxer.

Duncan hunter is just what we need. A social and fiscal conservative. Why in the world Giuliani or Huckabee have the support they do is just amazing to me.

He also is an American Patriot. He wants us to defend or borders, and protect our sovereignty whether it be politically or in trade matters.

Duncan Hunter should be running away with this nomination. That he is not is a poor reflection on the Republican party, whose members continue to complain that Rudi is a social liberal, Huckabee a fiscal liberal, Romney a chameleon, McCain a threat to free speech, and Thompson too disinterested, and yet continue to support them for reasons only they know.

Here is your Reagan conservative folks.

and not full of hot air. When he says something, he means it.

And Democrats REALLY hate him.
