A plan to stop OPEC from holding us hostage

I am in favor of finding alternative resources, but until then, we will need oil. So this is what I propose that President Bush does.

1. We start drilling in ANWR, and just don't inform people, other than those pertinent and those in the area notified.
2. Meet with the leaders of the oil companies in the US and encourage them to produce more.
3. Then when we have built up an ample supply to last us about 6 months, the president holds a news conference and announces that oil from OPEC countries will be stopped at the border until the price reaches $50.
4. Declare a moritorium on all taxes federal and state (And announce that any state that tries to keep taxing will have their federal funds withheld)
5. Then start producing around the clock our own oil, and let the OPEC members know that a new page has turned and that we will not be held hostage.

I know this is not a perfect plan,(but I am not an economist, just a consumer) but with the price of oil and gas, it will get some attention.

Big problem by simpson316

We won't be able to be self-sufficient on ANWR alone.

Another problem is that it would take a series of years for the ANWR drilling to really come online.

Now also found at The Minority Report

that we were getting serious about energy policy and drilling for oil.

Oil is a market like any other. Pricing decisions are impacted by future assessments.

Right now the assessment is that the US is lame and that we will not drill for oil anywhere.

The biggest threat to these guys are alternative fuels. I don't care what the fuel is, make it electric, hydrogen, or run on cow manure. Just find another way to power things and you put them out of business. Heck, the sheer threat of moving to other fuels is enough to get them crawling back. Your ideas might help short term, but I'm thinking about the next 100 years.
