"Romney lands movement conservative figure"
http://www.politico.com/blogs/jonathanmartin/0108/Romney_lands_movement_...

"Mitt Romney has picked up the support of Morton Blackwell, a veteran conservative warrior who previously backed Fred Thompson.

Blackwell is the GOP's national committeeman from Virginia, but he's better known to conservatives as chief of the Leadership Institute, a training center for ambitious young Republicans.

With the race increasingly appearing to match Romney vs. McCain, more movement conservative figures such as Blackwell will surely side with the candidate opposing who some on the right still view as their intraparty bete noire."

Romney Scores Veteran Conservative Endorsement
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 4:19 PM
Jonathan Martin reports that conservative icon (and personal hero to yours truly), Morton Blackwell has endorsed Mitt Romney for President. (Previously, Morton had endorsed Fred Thompson.)

While Morton Blackwell may not be a household name, he is, without a doubt, one of the most important conservative leaders in America.

It's safe to say he has acolytes serving in the highest echelons of government -- as well as in every major GOP presidential campaign.

Here's one small example that will give you a glimpse into how influential Blackwell is:

Everyone knows National Review, RedState, and Townhall.com are three of the top outlets for conservative new media, right? Well, five years ago, National Review's Mark Hemingway, RedState co-founder Mike Krempasky, and yours truly, all three worked for Morton Blackwell (we are by no means the most prominent of his proteges)."

The endorsement of Morton Blackwell is definitive proof that Romney can and does appeal to the most conservative players out there. I sincerely hope that this endorsement, together with the endorsement of many other former FredHeads will help resolve some of the legitimate concern that many of you out there have about Romney.

Concern not yourselves with the obnoxiousness of the many "suitors" out there for your vote. This is your decision and no one, not even Morton Blackwell, can make it for you. However, I hope that as you weigh the various candidates and ponder their weaknesses and strengths that you will look seriously at Romney and what could be. Even if he does negate on his campaign promises, he will still only as moderate as we already know McCain and Huckabee to be.

and he is pulled nearly equal to McCain in my preference list. He has ditched the attacks and the economic concerns work to his advantage. If he improves his delivery - i.e. not using too many words in his responses, which makes him look like he's rushing through a Power Point presentation- he could be formidable against Hillary.

Rudy's still my guy, but I like our Top 3 - thus, my "optimist" blog today!

very last sentence. And that's why I don't want Romney as my candidate.

Do you mean by David Ribeirao

because I, a Romney supporter, is calling them moderate; or, that he MAY turn out to be a moderate?

I think there are a lot of serious conservatives out there who are realizing that Romney is the most appealing conservative choice.

Just curious, Janis I know we've interacted before but I can't remember who you support.

Janis was a Fredhead by BlackRepub

And a fine lady as well. As a former Fredhead waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay back in the day, I understand his appeal, and I offer to all of the Fredheads that Romney is the only candidate that offers across the board appeal to conservatives of all stripes. His decision to make his bed with conservatives is my biggest reason to believe he won't betray us. Romney is way to ambitious to be a 1 term president, and he won't forgoet who gets him in office.

If you ever find that you only have an hour to live, spend it with a liberal and it will seem like a year."-Rush Limbaugh

point of view. Your take on why Romney wouldn't shiv us--he wants a second term--is somewhat reassuring. It's one of the questions I certainly have about McCain, who, we are told, only wants one term himself. That stick and carrot thing is important, at least I would assume it would be.

You stated that if Romney negated his campaign promises, he wouldn't be any less moderate than Huck or McCain. I DON'T want to support someone who is likely to break his campaign promises. By adding that last sentence, it really sounds as if it's a foregone conclusion that this is a possibility.

I agree by Right Again

It weakens rather than strengthens the argument.

Our hope is that Romney, as President, would never consider reneging on any of his campaign promises.

Oh, okay. by David Ribeirao

As someone who negotiates frequently in the business world, I usually try to address what I see as the next concern. Personally, I completely believe him and don't think he will negate on any promises. I see what you're saying though.

Since Fred came in third by Vegas Rick

Since Fred came in third last Saturday, I've been giving Google a work-out researching Romney. This is my take on his flip-flopping:

Near as I can tell, he always tells the voters what they want to hear in order to get elected. But, and I think this is important, he also always follows through on his campaign promises.

From what I can tell, he is loyal to his voters.

Take this as opinion, I didn't notate my sources.

Oh, this is great. by NightTwister

He tells everyone what they want to hear. Everyone gets what they want because he's "loyal to his voters".

We get Bruce Almighty for president.

Fred Thompson's Principles
==== 13 ====

He made some stupid promises during the campaign (like Medicare Part D) but he has been good about delivering on them, or at least giving it a serious try (in the case of SS and immigration).

That's more or less my opinion too. I think his commitment to besting China at the economic and military strength game comes from the heart, and I think he'll keep the other conservative commitments he's made, and that's as far as I'll go.
