Where was Sam Brownback?

By FirstState Posted in Comments (47) / Email this page » / Leave a comment »

Today, the Senate voted on an amendment to eliminate sanctuary cities for illegal immigrants.

The amendment failed by one vote.

Sam Brownback did not vote.

Does anyone know why?

(Before anyone jumps down his throat or mine, I'm sure there's a reason.)

Also... by FirstState

Senator Craig Thomas (R-WY) and currently out-of-commission Senator Tim Johnson (D-SD) also did not vote.

this STUPID longstanding tradition of a member of one side sitting out any vote that the incapacitated Senator would have voted on -- my take is it would be incumbent on the other side to get their senator re-capacitated!

of the Democrats being the Evil Party and the GOP being the Stupid Party.

Johnson needs to be replaced as Senator, he is medically unfit to serve. But Dems are loathe to lose their majority, and the GOP is too polite to tell the Dems they are wrong.

Graham (R-SC)
Hagel (R-NE)
Lugar (R-IN)
Martinez (R-FL)
Snowe (R-ME)
Specter (R-PA)
Voinovich (R-OH)

These guys and gal voted against the amendment. I have no further non-bannable comments on them.

I think you are quite wrong on this point. While I disagree with those of ether party that vote against what I believe is the right answer on this issue, it is not an act of courage to not vote at all. Every Democratic and Republican candidate for President, save Brownback found the time to do their job and cast a vote. Senator Brownback, a guy that wants to be President of the United States, was AWOL from doing his duty in the Senate and voting one way or the other on this legislation on the record.

I'm not a big fan of Senator Brownback and I make no pretense of parting company with him, but this lack of even bothering to show up and stand one way or the other is just plain inexcusable and I would not vote for him for the office of dog catcher if I had the chance.

can tell us why he missed the vote, I'm ambivilant about him. OTOH, the magical group who voted "no" earn my undying wrath. If Sam doesn't have a "good" excuse, so will he.

I'll keep the cross posting down, but here's where Senator Brownback was, instead of doing the work of a Senator...I call that being AWOL when McCain, Clinton and Obama seemed to find time to vote.

Republican primary challenges to this "Gang of 8" that allowed sanctuary cities to persist must begin NOW!

In addition to missing the vote you described, Sen. Brownback also missed another 49-48 vote. This vote was on an amendment by Sen. Dorgan and its purpose was to sunset the Y-1 nonimmigrant visa program after a 5-year period. Here is a link to the vote: http://www.senate.gov/legislative/LIS/roll_call_lists/roll_call_vote_cfm... .

It could be Brownback hasn't made up his mind yet on how he stands on this issue.

Or it could be by Socrates

that he has made up his mind, and knows the people have, also.

You nailed it. Once again Senator Brownback has let down the conservative movement when it comes to illegal immigration.

Who cares? by Neil Stevens

Is Sen. Brownback unconservative or unprincipled for not voting on a particular amendment to a Democratic bill, whose purpose is to place federal mandates on local government?

And is he wrong for not voting with Claire McCaskill and Robert C. Byrd, or is he wrong for not voting with Ted Kennedy and Debbie Stabenow?

Run like Reagan!

Actually by Socrates

the amendment was completely unnecessary, since States and munies don't have the right to override Federal laws anyway.

Right. by spainishirish

As someone pointed out elsewhere, this shows that the legislation essentially would turn all of America into a sanctuary city, i.e., an immigration Dodge City nation. This amendment's purpose may have been to highlight that bad result, but it substantively would have done nothing.

Override? by Neil Stevens

Refusing to enforce federal law isn't the same as overriding federal law. Refusing to cooperate actively with federal agents isn't the same as overriding federal law.

Likewise, you won't see the FBI enforcing traffic violations, but that doesn't mean the FBI is overriding state sovereignty.

Sanctuary cities are a symptom not the problem. Insufficient federal enforcement at the border and on the interior is the problem. Passing the buck to the states doesn't fix that.

Run like Reagan!

I suppose there's a legal difference between 'not cooperating' and 'nullifying'.

Nullification by Neil Stevens

I don't suppose there's any chance that we can link in the press the Sanctuary City movement with Nullification, and therefore State's Rights, and therefore get lefties calling the pro-illegal-immigration crowd racists, is there?

He would be little help now, unless he found religion on the road to Des Moines.

Sen. Brownback also missed the vote (http://www.senate.gov/legislative/LIS/roll_call_lists/roll_call_vote_cfm...)
on Sen. Vitter's amendment (S.Amdt.1157) to strike the amnesty provisions from the immigration bill.

Why I need to be bombarded with IMs while I'm at work in order to come here and provide information that is readily accessible on Google, Yahoo, or indeed the Senator's website. I get the feeling it might have something to do with the fact that many of the folks "asking" this question already know the answer.

If time off is really a huge priority to him, maybe Senator isn't the right job for him. And if that is the case, President of the United States certainly isn't the right job.

I think it is much more likely he didn't want to be seen voting the "wrong" way on the measures, so it is easier to just miss the votes entirely and leave the voters guessing. Voting does have that nasty side effect of putting you on the record.

Assumption wrong! by SteveLA

leon

"I assume,..., even if you have worked at your place of employment for over a decade."

Nope, not when my employer has important business going on, not if I want to keep my job.

In the case of Senator Brownback the citizens of the State of Kansas and of this country have fairly important business going on. But I guess running for President is more important than voting for funding for American troops in the field or dealing with immigration legislation.

'Snark On'
I know, the US Military can implement the Brownback rule; If you really really need to be doing something else, and you got over a decade of service, you can decide to take the day or two or three off to do something you think is more important when we need you to do your darn job.

SteveLA, Brownback was an original cosponsor of the Kennedy-McCain amnesty legislation. He strongly supported rewarding millions of illegal aliens with legal status and a path to citizenship.

He missed two (2) 49-48 votes on immigration legislation. Additionally, he missed a vote on Sen. Vitter's amendment to remove the amnesty provisions of the immigration bill. The five other Senate candidates for president all voted on that amendment.

No matter how you try to spin it, the Senator's absence on these key votes tells us everything we need to know. Apparently 97 other Senators were able to balance the demands of their personal lives with those of this nation.

Picking of Nits by SteveLA

Neil

Maybe voting on funding for troops in harms way is a "Nit" to you, but it's not to me. Or for that matter Loony Lefties like HillDog and Osamabama who did manage to vote the wrong way, but voting in the Senate must be too much of a "Nit" (to use your parlance) for the Senator from Kansas running his Don Quixote campaign for President to be bothered.

Brownback owes an apology at the very least to the troops who's welfare he seems to place lower than his own political future.

If he supplied the extra vote in favor of the amendments, Cheney would've voted against them to keep the compromise in tact. Whether Brownback showed would not have impacted the vote either way.

I am conservative, and Brownback will never get my vote. He sold us out on amnesty too many times.

By the way, Los Angeles has joined the Third World. Thanks to (too many to mention) for allowing this mass importation of poverty.
