Here is the outlook as I see it, folks:
In the 2008 elections, the Republican Party is going to suffer the most sweeping losses in modern history and wind up with a deficit in the House of Representatives of more than 70 seats, and the Senate may be similarly dominated by Democrats.
John McCain's campaign to triumph over Barack Obama by acting like a Conservative Democrat who believes that all Americans are "compatriots" and that we must move beyond partisanship simply isn't going to get any traction in either the MSM or among the population. The electorate is hungry and eager to throw any and all Republicans into the wilderness. His "cross the aisles" campaign is furthermore going to hasten the breakup of the existing Republican Party as we know it into a group of infighting factions, all of which detest each other even in their impotence in beating Barack Obama at the polls. The McCain campaign can read the newspapers itself: it knows that it is getting absolutely no grace period or honeymoon from the MSM as a result of its much-ballyhooed "friendliness" to the media in the past several years.
With the Congress firmly in hand and the Presidency a rubber stamp, the Democrats are going to run up one side and down the other of this country enacting Socialist legislation. The Blue Dog Democrats and the old-guard Capitalist liberals are on their way to being purged by a younger generation of Leftist Progressive Democrats in the mould of Markos Moultisas and Howard Dean. Not only will they continue to centralize control over the economy in Washington, the legislative agenda in Washington is going to work to overturn every single principle and initiative that was the hallmark of the Reagan Revolution, which is now well and truly finished.
The Democrats have outflanked, outmaneuvered, and outsmarted the Republicans at every turn in the past four years. When they achieve control over both houses of Congress and the Presidency, the transformation will be complete and irreversible. Our leadership has been rudderless. Our media savvy has been execrable, and the reversals have already begun before the election has even taken place.
We will have eight years of a Democrat in the White House, making common cause with our enemies and working at every turn to slow down the American economy to fight global warming and place larger and larger swathes of our country under federal control -- everything from energy production and consumption to corporate profits to taxes are going to move sharply leftward in ideology and intent. The United Nations is going to become the sovereign political body in the world, and the United States will be brought to kiss its ring. Anyone Conservative or neo-Conservative will be systematically purged from government positions in the State Department, the Department of Defense, and many other organs of the State.
The personal and corporate tax rates are going to return to levels common before the Reagan administration. The supply of energy will not increase: it will decrease, and consumption will be made more expensive. American job creation in manufacturing sectors will continue its flight overseas. The cost of running a small business and doing the things needed to run a small business, like pay the electric bill and have products shipped, will continue to rise. The government will respond to the increase in poverty by redistributing the remaining wealth on an unprecedented scale. Business owners will join the Democrat plantation because the Democrats will pick and choose which ones they think should survive.
Judicially, there will never be another strict constitutionalist appointed to the Supreme Court. Those days have come to an end with the appointment of Roberts and Alito, because the intellectual apparatus for producing qualified Conservatives as Supreme Court justices is going to be completely dismantled at the university level. The federal court appointees under an Obama administration are going to make Jimmy Carter look like Barry Goldwater by comparison.
The Republican Party, the GOP itself, is going to be reduced to a handful of squabbling malcontents who operate at the fringes. They are going to be the next Dennis Kuciniches. Our country is going to see a massive influx of new immigrants under the rubric of diversity, and all of them will be taxpayer supported. They will be made eligible for driver's licenses, government-supplied health care, maternity leave, welfare, unemployment benefits, and social security.
All of the advances of the past 10 years in terms of the 2nd Amendment will be gradually stripped away by legislative fiat. The Assault Weapons Ban will reemerge in a new, much stronger form, and handgun ownership and semiautomatic rifles and shotguns will be banned across the board.
On energy policy, our policy will be attrition and boondoggle. We will not drill in ANWR or the outer continental shelf. We will not remove the moratorium on shale oil research. We will not build any new nuclear power plants. The price of energy will rise, forcing people to adopt Green policies a-la Great Britain, and businesses will be forced to comply with sticks. Many of them will leave the country as a result.
My advice for people is to batten down the hatches. From the things I've seen and read recently on this blog, the infighting, the op-ed columns by people like Noonan, the words of a Senator in a conference call, and most importantly the likely election results in Congress and the executive branch, it is no exaggeration to say that Marx has won.
Welcome to the United Socialist States of America. We couldn't hold the Republic.
You have about a year, by my reckoning, to figure out how to stash enough money and supplies away while thinking about how to get out. Unfortunately, you have no place left to go. Once the U.S. is a Socialist country, that's it, folks. For at least 1,000 years.
Stop bitchin' long enough to enjoy the

I mean, jeez, Kowalski.
They run elections every two years, ya know. Assuming any of your flights of fancy were true, one would think the average American voter would put a stop to it pretty soon. Unless you don't believe in the average voter, in which case, wouldn't that make you an elitist who knows better than the average voter :-).
Seriously man, we're not that bad.
And that's the problem. The elitists are the Democrats who are going to be running the show from Washington for the next eight years. I think the people have shown that they don't want to be Citizens, they want to be Subjects. At least, that's my take on it this morning.
People know that it is my practice when I write these kinds of things to put all my worst thoughts out there first. Taking a worse-case reading of the recent fighting here on Redstate and the other news that's trickling in, I have come up with this scenario. It's not the only one, but when I sat down this morning to try to write something overarching, this was the result.
It doesn't have anything to do with Happy Pills: I received this morning an email from the McCain campaign in which he as much as said that he is not going to run his campaign as a Reagan Republican, at least not the kind of Reagan Republican people here at Redstate want to see. Here are his words:
I'm not interested in partisanship that serves no other purpose than to gain a temporary advantage over our opponents. We are all compatriots. We are fellow Americans. I intend to prove myself worthy of the office, of our country and of your respect. I won't judge myself by how many elections I've won. I won't spend one hour of my presidency worrying more about my re-election than keeping my promises to the American people.
The media is having none of that, and it hasn't since the beginning of this campaign. John McCain is still the enemy, and he is going to continue to be the enemy. I can only hope that Americans are wise enough to realize that his magnanimous words are not going to be reciprocated by the things they read in the newspaper and on television. So far, his "outreach" strategy has drawn a huge goose-egg. Howard Dean went on the attack against him in the pages of the New York Times without ever having had the benefit of reading his speech. In other words, to the Democrats and their friends in the media -- it doesn't matter what John McCain says.
At least he is being honest, he isn't really a Republican, mush less a Reagan Republican.
We are looking at enduring the wrath of the most hateful people on earth, (Pelosi,Clinton et. al.) because of eight years of "reaching out" and lack of conservative leadership. (bigger government, Homeland security, spending like a drunken sailor on leave.)
The man with the veto pen refused in most cases to rock the boat, and went along with the Demoncrats.
The punishment does actually fit the crime, although it's going to be heck to pay until we can turn it around.
It's time to turn out some of the lily livered senators and reps like Sen Dole, who vote with the demoncrats frequently, and put some conservatives in office. Turn up the heat, subscribe to a service that emails their votes on each bill. Give them the dickens every time they cave to liberalism! Then...
worry the daylights out of your friends until they do the same.
These people (even Rep) have an elitist attitude that they can do anything they want , you'll ignore it and vote for them anyway.
We lit a fire under Burr on the amnesty bill, and he's been on the straight and narrow since. Dole thinks she is above the fray and has a lifetime position. Well, we will see,
Get off your collective butt and follow the votes , write the letters and make the phone calls.
Make them change just to get you to shut up!
With much tough love,
Regards

The other alternative is to simply recognize that so-called "compassionate conservatism" has lost. For my part, I'd say we have yet to see an actual battle between a party that is truly committed to maximizing liberty, financial discipline, limited government, and personal responsibility, versus a party that espouses socialist principles, wealth redistribution, and personal glorification of elected leaders through trough feeding.
If, or when, we do, and the former loses, I could see a cause for such a doom and gloom viewpoint. Recently what we've had is a battle of Socialism, and a bizarre sort of self-contradictory Socialism-lite dressed up as Conservatism.
Hmmm. Perhaps our so called Leaders have really been engaged in active appeasement of the left and were avoiding a fight.
The greatest single cause of Atheism today is Christians who profess Jesus with their lips & then go and deny him by their lifestyle. That's what an unbelieving world simply finds..unbelievable -Brennan Manning
Thinking back to the unified (R) government, I'm not sure why they felt they had to appease anyone. They had control. There was no (D) president to veto anything they passed - they didn't need a veto-proof majority to accomplish their professed goals of smaller government.
Rather than appeasement, it appears to be an act of defection.
A while back David Hinz posted here about the time it is taking for stability in Iraq, and he said something to the effect of well some things just take time to happen like it has taken about 100 years for the USA to become marxist. I worry how prophetic he may have been. There were flirtations with totalitarian liberal fascism here from 1913-1921 and 1933-1945. But now I am worried we are going to see the full Monte.

shrug. And he probably would if ALL of Barry's plans are implemented and brought to their conclusion. The sad part (really sad part) is that the Dems have already set the theme to blame Bush for all the economic hardships they will cause. They have managed to frame a slow growth period with 5% unemployment as the next great depression. All they will do during the suffering THEY cause is say "Look at what the misguided Republican policies have lead to. It'll take us decades to undo all the damage they've done."
But this is America. There have always been people who will come up with ways to succeed despite government hinderance. I hope we'll find a way to overcome all the burdens that Barry and Co. put onto the shoulders of those who actually produce something. Atlas won't shrug and we'll get through the dark years until someone new finally leads us back to that shining city on the hill.
Socialism doesn't work. It looks nice on paper, but it's been tried and it's failed miserably every time (usually accompanied by widespread death and suffering).

everything will be trashed in about three years, then, hopefully a leader will emerge in our party. It will have to be someone younger and not connected to the crap we have seen from Republicans in recent years.
as for where to stash your money, I say move to gold. The democrats will certainly inflate the economy.

It will take a little time to get their agenda passed an implemented. Say 6 months to pass it and another year before it's actually put into effect. If we're REAL lucky they won't use a retroactive tax increase like Clinton did.
People will complain about the taxes and higher energy prices at first, but they'll pony up. This will limit the spending they have available for other items and the economy will slow to a crawl (probably recession). Layoffs and business closures will start to become commonplace, unemployment will creep up towards European levels (about year 3). All this time the Dems will be blaming the wrongheaded Bush economic policies for the problems. About year 4, their policies will REALLY start to hit home. They'll pass protectionist legislation that will make the mass of unionists happy, but will further erode our economy. This will take another 2 years.
I give it till about year 6 of the Barry administration before things get bad enough for long enough that most people start to pine for the good ol' days of the Bush era. That gives us at least 8 years of wandering in the wilderness.
Then trying to UNDO all the socialist crap will be nearly impossible. We MIGHT be able to get some free trade deals passed if any country would trust us enough to believe us again and that would help. But how do you undo socialized medicine or the newly "saved" social security plan or any of the other bureaucratic monstrosities that the Dems envision?
It's far easier to NOT do them in the first place which is why we MUST elect McCain.

I think once an agency is created, whether it's Education or OSHA or anything in between, there's no strong political will to eliminate them. Obama's expansions will probably be just as permanent.
There is a theory. I am translating "You need a leftist government every once in a while to remind you how bad they are." Our last one was Carter. The Aussies just elected (last Nov)their first leftist since the 1980's and they are already sorry. But with a parliament system they have to wait at least three years to "change" anything again. BTW "change" (no definition required) was the theme of the last Oz election. Oh this site and others is the reason why the "change" won't last.

They love beautiful, happy stories with fairy tale endings.
Seriously though, your dystopian nightmare might yet be staved off. Interestingly, neither McCain nor Obama have to change 1 fraction for that to happen. After all, it's our votes that will decide who wins.
Meanwhile, this is for you, along with a recommendation for beer.

times in my life have been on the watch of the most execrable Dem presidents and congresses. I can't speak for the other guy, but he's the one people seem to worry about when they elect these pandering bums. Once people realize,"hey, I'm doing fine, and so is the other guy", they throw the bums out.
It may seem like we're in the midst of a strategic withdrawal, but it's only a series of tactical retreats...and for every one of those, we're taking a hill or holding the line somewhere else.
So we may have a few years of Obumbling and clown cars sreeching around the halls of Congress. I guarantee you the Dems are going to be more frustrated than us in 2012, because in America, there is no shortcut on their Long March.
I recall some crowing around here and some other places three years ago about the dawn of a "permanent Republican majority" and expect we'll hear something similar from the left if the elections turn out as you say. Just smile to yourself and carry on.
Have faith and be prepared, but don't go down the spider-hole yet.
Mass hysteria! :-)
I know we don't Obama and the Dems to win but if they do, they will NOT destroy the country. We have congressional elections every two years (all members of the House and a third in the Senate) and we will have another presidential election in 4 short years. In fact, the presidential election will probably begin 10 seconds after President Obama takes the oath of office (using your scenario).

matter who is elected. I suggest once Americas' minds are concentrated on oil prices/lower standard of living and the vision of Cuba-China drilling near Miami, they will demand sanity and take back the country from the 30-year lib suicide.

begun to fight yet, and so, your warnings are welcome. So many don't remember the late 70s. But they are about to be re-introduced, and I trust we will rise up and embrace fundamentals.

I was born in 1970. Back in the days when people were artificially limited to buting $X worth of gas (forcing people to go into more than one gas line to fill up), I remember telling my dad that adults aren't very bright.
If Obama is President, what are the Vegas odds that they pull out the Carter playbook?
The problem is, Game, that a lot of people are willing to lie (which is the strong way of saying it) or historicize (which is the weak way of saying the same thing) the genius of the American Way into oblivion.
Present company excluded, the facts are that in terms of the economy (especially its resilience), pollution, the threat of nuclear war, treatment of disease, the kinds of products and services that are available to more people at lower costs (with only a couple of notable exceptions) America is a better country than it ever has been.
But that message is routinely buried.
Let's take what was supposed to be the largest fear of the liberal and leftist baby boomers who now currently have their rosy fingers wrapped around the dawn in the media and in our Universities. Is the world really a more dangerous place in terms of standard conceptions of nuclear war, or is the GWOT and the possibility of rogue states getting nukes more important:
42. Number of designated targets for U.S. weapons in the Single Integrated Operational Plan (SIOP) in 1976, 1986, and 1995: 25,000 (1976), 16,000 (1986) and 2,500 (1995)
We have fewer than 1/10th the nuclear warheads targeted through SIOP than we did just 30 years ago. Meanwhile the threat of rogue nations as asymmetrical threats has increased by several orders of magnitude. A straightforward reading of those facts would tell you that the Bush administration was correct to concentrate on the GWOT, but nobody (including John McCain) will ever get credit for that.
There are hundreds of other ways in which the United States is by every measure a better place than the world I grew up in as a child. In virtually every respect it is better, particularly because of the Reagan years. But you cannot say those things to people in Universities. Almost to a person, the professors I knew in Chicago despised Ronald Reagan and everything about him. They are still there, and he is dead. You tell me what's going to happen?
BTW, the link to some of those interesting facts is the Brookings Institution Nuclear Weapons Cost Study which was completed in 1998.
threat now than ever, BUT I doubt it, given that despite the great depression and wwii, we did not devolve into european style socialism and that when we faced dire straits in the late 70s we chose the message of Reagan and it worked. I think we still have the heart and soul within us to learn the lesson again beacuse of our religious faith, judeo-christian values and intangibles.
But it is crucial that when the times get tough in the next 2 years that conservatives teach the lessons in a loud voice.
Plus, 'ski, Marx died in the 19th C. His vision has not been right, ever, even in europe, since the USSR died in 70 yrs and europe is dying now. Marx's policies kill.
I think the word "right" is too vague though.

Gun control won't be part of the national democratic platform any time soon. Dean has been pushing the position that gun control should be handled at the state level. IMHO, this has contributed to our ability to make inroads in the south and mountain states.
As a high powered model rocketry buff, I'm really hoping that under a democratic administration the ATF will scale back the restrictions that have almost killed the hobby since 9/11.
And there were *no* legitimate reasons for that, outside of putting model rocketeers off their games, yes? So scale it on back.
Just ask the people who used to make chemistry sets.

John Cole summed it up best;
"The GOP does in fact stand for things. It stands for the Iraq war, it stands for $126 dollar a barrel oil, it stands for $4 a gallon gasoline, it stands for bloated budgets and huge deficits and diddling pages and secret detention and opposition to stem cell research and hostility to homosexuality and torture and domestic surveillance and permanent war and the Bankruptcy Bill and Terri Schiavo and the Prescription Drug Plan and the failed response to Katrina and blocking SCHIP and the breakdown of the military and and Global Warming denial and Guantanamo Bay and torture and the AG scandal and, most of all, it stands for partisan name-calling while the country is flushed down the drain."
