RE: NC GOP Ad - McCain Was Wrong. Very Wrong.

I don't like having to write this because John McCain still has my vote.
But just because John McCain is our nominee does not mean that he is above error or that we should not make noise about it when he does something so thoroughly bone-headed as to hand the Democratic Party and their media arm the perfect cover (himself) to recast any further mention of Obama's entirely voluntary 20 year association with a hate-mongering conspiracy-theory-promoting joke of a "pastor" as a "racist" attack.
As it is, the Democrats' National Party Organ was only too eager to go along with it. It's now on the way to being part of this election's narrative; 2008's very own "Willie Horton" moment, a contrived episode the Left would cite forever as Republicans winning based on "hate".
The assertion that Mr. Obama is "just too extreme for North Carolina" is a clear bid to stir bigotry in a Southern state ...
Of course, it goes without saying that for the elitist latte-sipping blistering idiots that comprise most of the nation's editorial boards, whites, especially Southern whites, will always and forever be just a hair's breadth away from donning sheets, burning crosses and going on lynching parties in black neighborhoods - all they need is just to see a black man on their television screens.
The completely non-racial Willie Horton ad was shoe-horned to support the "R is for Racist" narrative (which has, and continues to cost us a lot of votes - and not just from the black community) using this exact same travesty of logic. Apparently any ad that features persons of color in a negative context must be an appeal to the "typical" (i.e. non-journalist) white person's inner-Nazi.
I'm pretty certain that if Senator Barack Obama was, instead, Senator Bernard O'Connor (white) who is found for twenty years to have taken for a mentor a white Far Left priest who celebrated 9/11 as the "chickens coming home to roost" because of a lack of Universal Healthcare, gay marriage or tax rates below 70% from the pulpit (a some other Leftist shibboleth), he would be pretty much gone from the race no matter how many journalists he could make spontaneously soil themselves in orgasmic bliss from saying "Hope™" and "Change™".
The Times concludes - thanks to McCain, establishing for the rest of the MSM the position that any criticism of Obama and his relationship with Wright is "stir[ring] up bigotry";
Senator McCain was right when he said, of the new ad, that "there’s no place for that kind of campaigning — and the American people don’t want it, period."
Now he needs to get his party to listen.
As usual, McCain gets his fix of media love, bought at the cheap price of facilitating his party getting the shaft, simply because Mr. Maverick saw a way for himself to score a few cheap media points and he went with it by (once again) heaving members of his own side under the bus.
All without actually seeing the ad in question.
McCain said the ad was described to him: "I didn’t see it, and I hope that I don’t see it."
Why in the name of all that is Holy did he not even consider the possibility that the NCGOP deserved the benefit of the doubt ... at least enough for him to ask for a moment to see the 41 second ad before he decided to rain attacks on the character and motives of the NCGOP's leadership?
Let's not fool ourselves; this was not some clever strategic decision to get the ad some more (free) airplay because he "secretly" approves of it and wants it to remain on air for as long as possible, i.e. he's only "pretending" to be above the fray. This argument of a rather large contingent of McCainiacs desperately trying to convince the other (rightfully) enraged occupants of our Big Tent to er ... "calm down" is utter nonsense.
First of all, McCain, according to the self-same McCainiacs, is all about "Straight Talk" and this sort of deepcover doublecross strategy very neatly contradicts that. Second of all, he didn't see the ad, he only heard a description of it (probably from one of the many Democrats (i.e. "journalists") riding in his campaign bus/plane) so he had no basis upon which to so categorically declare it out of the bounds of decency. Third, the ad concerned the two Democrats competing in their state's gubernatorial primary, and made no mention of him so he could have just as easily avoided being press-ganged into the Obama's Defense Corps.
Another contingent of McCainiacs argue that the ad was indeed the most horrific ad in the history of political campaigning and that if McCain had not denounced it, he would have lost by a landslide in November, the GOP would lose all our seats that are up for grabs in the Senate and 100+ seats in the House ...
Well, I exaggerate, but all of the lesser variants of this are just as ridiculous - the idea being pushed is that by denouncing this ad, McCain just made himself more attractive to "moderates" who (we are assured without any evidence - like a poll, for example? - beyond the shrieks of MSM editorial page writers) are so horrified by the sheer evil of it that none will likely ever vote Republican again.
Nonsense. Again.
I continue to find it hard to be convinced of the notion that for a Republican (and, strangely enough, only a Republican) to appeal to "moderates" it is absolutely necessary for him to launch broadsides at his own party as bigoted, intolerant, dishonorable, and out-of-touch reprobates as McCain has done (often seemingly at the media's behest) far too many times over the past seven years. It, no doubt, appeals to the sensibilities of the 90+% Democrat media, but I've begun to doubt that attacking your own side really appeals to the "middle" ... or else we'd be seeing "moderate" Democrats doing the same thing to their side.
Bottomline; McCain was wrong. And while I know expecting him to deign to apologize to the people he flung under the Straight Talk Express' wheels is a recipe for disappointment, he should at least consider having Linda Daves standing by his side on the stage next time he is in North Carolina.
The bottomline is that didn't even bother to see the ad before condemning a woman who I'd bet would still work tirelessly to help him win her state in November despite what he willfully blindly did to her reputation (i.e. Linda Daves is now officially a "racist") in exchange for a few days of positive mention in newspapers that would endorse his opponent when all is said and done.
I'm still going to vote for him though, because he is still head, shoulders and knees above the two empty-suits battling to be his opponent. But I'm not going to hide that I wish I didn't have to. All that I ask is that he make it just a little easier by simply not turning his guns on our own troops. It's hard enough having to contend with the Democrats, the MSM and Soros' 527s. Our own nominee joining them is not cool.
He's had seven years to burnish his Maverick™ credentials. The MSM has rewarded him richly for it.
Even if he wasn't our nominee, that should be quite enough.
We'll see if it sticks!

As for the post, couldn't have said it better.

Earned Linda a standing O at our district convention on Sat. Even pried a donation out of this skinflint! We should have been prepared for any ad showing BO's face to be called "racist," but it would have been better if McCain didn't start it.
Whether this was the result of the Senate cocoon or something more sinister, it should give us pause. Of course an apology should be given to Ms. Daves, but that might cause a semi-favorable story to be bumped to Page 23 from Page 22 of the NYT.
We cannot allow our opponents to dictate what is and what is not allowed as political speech. If the senator has decided he is fine with it, good. Just don't expect the rest of us to cower when the press confers absolute moral authority on the next Cindy Sheehan, Jersey Girl, or proclaims something obviously not to be "racist."
Like you, I still will vote for McCain and try to get him elected...even as he works against both.
Yes, respect the man and the office. No, we don't have to agree with everything he says or consider him our moral better.
And we don't have to recede walking backwards from the throne like they used to do until quite recently with HM Queen Elizabeth II.
Let the other party go ga-ga over their demigod.
I’m an ENTHUSIASTIC base voter for John McCain

OK guys...we're getting redundant...and we're looking petty!
Maybe we should cool it for a while...We'll have plenty of time to be outraged the next time McCain turns his guns on us!

I think that Martin's piece is a much better way to air a grievance. He was showing the whiners how it is done.
Now also found at The Minority Report
Since I am what you would call one of the whiners I don't agree...What I'm saying is...we've made our point. We've worked this over for a couple days and it's time to hold fire and conserve ammunition. Keep your powder dry so to speak. Not that we want to be shooting at McCain...but we need to maintain credibility so we can deal legitimately with other issues that arise. In short Kicking a dead horse only hurts us all in the long run.
As it is, I am currently working on a piece about McCain's announcement on his "Call to action tour" today. It seems like our alleged "foot soldier in the Reagan Revolution" is proposing a seven billion dollar nanny state health care proposal that we're all supposed to get behind!

BTW Martin...It is a good post and I enjoyed it. I did recommend it...I'm just saying we should move on...there'll be plenty more to discuss as this campaign progresses.

I just saw RNC demands networks yank McCain ad on Drudge. Is that how we are going to react to attack ads now? We are going to demand they be taken off the air or whine about "out of context"? I suppose I'm young compared to some, but is this how we've always campaigned? Whining about an attack ad? How about we just fire back instead?

Obama-Wright ad was certainly made more apparent today by Reverend Wright's comments to The National Press Club. . . .
McCain doesn't need or want attack ads from the GOP when Hillary is hammering away at Obama and Rev Wright is making an ass of himself in public.
The point is...McCain wasn't mentioned in the NC ad...it's a local ad run in a specific race...It didn't mention McCain and it involve him or his campaign in any way.
Had it been an add an independent group did on McCain's behalf he had a legitimate right to ask that it be pulled. Even then; calling the NCGOP out of touch with reality was out of line.
As it is and given the facts He had no business commenting on this ad because it didn't involve him in any way, If he wants to make it a policy of his campaign to not run ads on his own behalf that's fine and he should be respected in that call. But he has no right to ask other candidates to fall on the sword and forgo effective campaign strategies just so he can protect his own sense of honor and kiss up to the MSM!

The media will continue to try to trap McCain into slamming things done by Republicans. I think the facade of impartiality has been stripped from the MSM for a while know - they will be & are partisanly for whichever one survives the democrat primary. McCain & his team REALLY need to be congnizant of this & not allow the MSM to trap him into saying things against Republicans & goad him into making even harsher statements.
i.e. the MSM might be trying to trip McCain into attacking us.
There's two ways of looking at that. Maybe we should cut Johny Mac some slack because he's being tricked by the MSM, or It doesn't matter because the MSM couldn't trick him into it if attacking his own troops weren't a natural impulse for him.
I think it's a little of both. Time will tell!

Your Silence is
Your Consent!
supposed to be brighter/more experinced than that.
No I think he does it because he likes it just like all vices.

A great article, Martin.
Thanks for pointing out that the Willie Horton ad was not racial. IIRC, there was no face on the screen and no mention of race. All it took for Libs to call it "racist" was for the name "Willie Horton" to be mentioned in it. After all, wasn't that the name of the great BLACK left-fielder of the Detroit Tigers during the late '60s and '70s? Anyway, isn't everybody named "Willie" black? That's the way Liberals think.
If the Libs can latch onto the descriptive name "progressive," I think we should call our own Repub leadership the "Wobblies." Nothing to do with the originals, but McCain, Newt, W, and others are certainly wobbly when it comes to Conservatism. McCain seems to have no idea about what he's doing nor about its effect on the base of conservative Republicans. Or maybe he doesn't care. The same for Newt, but at least I'm pretty sure he cares.
