Promoted by Jeff. For another in-depth recounting of Monsoor's sacrifice and heroism, feel free to click over to the write-up I did on him back in 2006, when he was first nominated for this richly deserved award.

Petty Officer 2nd Class Michael Monsoor was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor today in a ceremony at the White House. Monsoor was a Navy SEAL stationed in Iraq.

On September 29, 2006, while he was in a sniper hideout in Ramadi, an insurgent through a grenade into the room. The grenade hit Monsoor in the chest and bounced in front of him. Without hesitation, he threw himself onto the grenade, saving two other soldiers nearby.

An article at Military.com provides more details. CNN also has an excellent writeup with a video interview of his sister linked from their story.

[Update #2] Video of ceremony available from White House website.

The following video is an excellent tribute to his life and military service.

Gone 2500 years, still not PC.

I want to ask all of you to put this question out on the Blogs, Why weren't Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama at the Medal of Honor ceremony to Honor Michael Monsoor? They were both in Washington D.C. and other democrats were there and so was John Mccain so they have no excuse! They had time to meet with and slap high fives with Anti War protesters and to get your time moved up so you can leave like senator Obama did for another commitment later after the ceremony was over, this makes you wonder why wouldn't these 2 democratic wanna be presidents Like Rep Sanchez democrat from california and Senator John Mccain go take 20 minutes to go pay tribute to this Hero and his family. I find this a disgrace. Thanks and God Bless America!

For the link to your story. An excellent story about a truly great man.

of the Medal of Honor. It would be reported on the front page of every newspaper.

Now the newspapers do their best to keep us in ignorance.

Thank you for doing your part to give this man his proper due, and to help us understand better what virtue and patriotism mean.

a lump in my throat when President Bush showed so much obvious sympathy as he looked at the mother and put his arm around her as the proclamation was being read. She shyly did the same to him.
Contrast that to the detesting look that Hilliary gave the general during the hearing

There's an Old West saying that you find in Louis L'Amour to describe men like Monsoor:

Men with the bark on.

That is one *man* right there, and I'd say the MOH was just barely worthy of him.

when my local radio station played the audio from the ceremony of Bush's speech. God Bless Michael Monsoor and all of his brothers and sisters in the military. They are true heroes.
