Pope Benedict confronts the Church of AGW

What joyus news I find this morning thanks to our friend Matt Drudge. According to the Daily Mail,
Pope Benedict XVI has launched a surprise attack on climate change prophets of doom, warning them that any solutions to global warming must be based on firm evidence and not on dubious ideology.
The leader of more than a billion Roman Catholics suggested that fears over man-made emissions melting the ice caps and causing a wave of unprecedented disasters were nothing more than scare-mongering.
The German-born Pontiff said that while some concerns may be valid it was vital that the international community based its policies on science rather than the dogma of the environmentalist movement.
Today, Pope Benedict makes me proud to be a Catholic. I encourage the reader to go read the article in it's entirety as he has even more great things to say on this topic. High Priest Algore will NOT be happy. Viva Papam!!

And then I got the pun. Nice.

The Church of AGW isn't just talking about caps on pollution but also on population.
What is the position of the RCChurch on birth control--contraception that is?
Look it up yourself, ain't all that hard to find.
Oh, and this has major threadjack potential - please post any answers you may find somewhere else.

Diplomacy is the art of saying 'Nice doggie' until you can find a rock.
But I find RS as useful as Google on some issues. This site seems to have a variety of folks who have a broad awareness of the interrelated ideas of policy issues discussed.
Too much going to today for my usual sunny disposition (smile).
Indeed - we have a broad array of experiences and awareness here at RS - but for questions like this it's almost always best to go the the Source.

My mind reels at the historical irony. But in these strange times, it is most fitting that the Pope be a force for Reformation, even as a number of Evangelical leaders are joining and proselytizing for the church of AGW.
Yes, the irony of the whole thing was overpowering.
It's great to see a real traditionalist stand up to the "trendy, get with the plan" drivel that's being batted about.
We might just pull ourselves together and see off BOTH threats....
"In his message, the pope also endorses greater cooperation on environmental protection, writing that "further international agencies may need to be established" for the purpose. He also calls for an "equitable distribution of wealth" in a globalized world."
Thanks to Google, this appeared from The Pew Forum's Religion News Service. And it's from his same address in which he questions the scaremongering of the AGW forces.
I'm Southern Baptist but I went to a Catholic school. I love this fellow Benedict. Long live the Pope. :-)
yet another pro-Catholic Southern Baptist that loves Pope Benedict chiming in here
Down with the church of AGW!
Benedict XVI is in the tradition of Augustine, Aquinas, and Newman. Simply superb. Always speaking truth to power with unmatchable intellect.
The rest is reasonable, but to claim that birth control is a threat to world peace? Come on.
The edict was "Go out and multiply"
Bircth Control is a refusal to obey that edict and, as such, is a violation of God's mandate.

The Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace has been discussing the problem at length and in great detail. In September, the Vatican explained its position to the U.N. thusly:
Speaking at a session on climate problems, Msgr. Pietro Parolin, the Vatican's under-secretary for Relations with States, left no doubt about the Holy See's commitment to environmental protection, emphasizing "the underlying moral imperative that everyone, without exception, has a grave responsibility to protect the environment."
While demanding effective action to avert ecological disaster, Msgr. Parolin called for a balanced and careful approach. He said that scientific evidence shows "a link between human activity and climate change." However, he said, the strength of that evidence "should neither be exaggerated nor minimized in the name of politics, ideologies, or self-interest."
Similarly, the Vatican representative cautioned against extreme reactions to the problem of climate change. On one hand he condemned the "fundamentally reckless approach" taken by those who would exploit the world's resources without regard to the environmental consequences.

The last paragraph was accidentally dropped from my post
...On the other hand, Msgr. Parolin rebuked other activists "who hold up the earth as the only good, and would characterize humanity as an irredeemable threat to the earth." That extreme approach, he noted, "would place human beings and their needs at the service of an inhuman ecology."

My Jesuit education taught me how to sniff out BS, and it sure helps with AGW.
A good education doesn't always produce the best results. The Jebbies tried to get Bill C. to go to their seminary, but he told them he was a Southern Baptist. He also had other proclivities that might have eventually made the vocation of a priest a BAD FIT!!

I have our local classical station on in my office, and right now they are playing Mendelssohn's Fifth Symphony ("Reformation"). This somehow seems appropriate for seeing this post at the same time....
