Don't like those gas prices? How about paying 50 cents/gallon more?

It's Christmas in March! Drudge has linked to a story from foxnews.com that makes a great gift, just in time for election year.
Appearently, Rep. John Dingell (D) of Michigan wants to add a 50 cent tax to every gallon of gasoline sold in order to "cut back on consumption".
Um yeah, sure John. I'll just walk 5 miles to work. No in fact, I have a better idea. I'll just spend less on other things which will hurt retail sales.
I know, I know, we're supposed to be fighting "global warming". Chill out, John. It's only spring.
Some environmentalists and economists say pain at the pump may be bad for Americans, but good medicine for a sick planet.
But others say it wouldn't change much. Even if Americans abandoned their cars, global emissions would fall by less than one percent.
WHAT are these people SMOKING? Abandon our CARS? What do they propose we do, start riding horses again? I can see it now, thousands of horse-drawn buggies on I-35. If you think rush-hour traffic is bad now....
While Dingell's idea will likely lie dormant until after the 2008 election, the idea of carbon taxes is not. Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama and John McCain all support some type of system that either directly or indirectly will raise prices to penalize polluters.
*Sigh*. Even John McCain. Good God, please help us before these enviro-wackos destroy our economy. Sadly, I think the toothpaste is already out of the tube. We could get snow in July and the sheeple will still cry about "climate change!!! CO2!!! Oh noooos!!!"
what something will actually cost. They actually think about Globull Warming when they have to pay an explicit carbon tax.
"I believe we must adjourn this meeting to some other place." - The last recorded words of Adam Smith.
Dingell let the cat out of the bag on this one. Rule number one when pushing left-wing energy schemes is to always mask and conceal the bottom-line financial impact on average people (which is usually large).
“.....women and minorities hardest hit”
Someone from Michigan proposing more taxes is not news. It's every day life from what I've seen.
