I'm back to being excited about a John McCain presidency

Like many of you I turned shades of green as John McCain highlighted his "green" policy approach for alleged CO2 pollution and fictional Global Warming. But today's points from the McCain camp have re-energized me for a McCain candidacy.
More below...

What fires me up?
-Strict constructionist judges.
-Vetoing earmarks.
-Defeating Al Qaeda and the Taliban.
-Marginalizing the United Nations with a League of Democracies.
-Openness and transparency in the Executive Branch: press conferences and Congressional Q&A.
-General approach to the presidency is as a change agent and problem solver, not a campaigner.

And the biggest thing to be excited about is that for better or worse, we have fielded the candidate with the best chance to win in 2008, when the Republican Brand is about as popular right now as New Coke and "Cop Rock."
McCain is our firewall against a resurgent Leftist movement in America. And with a firewall, you cede some ground to save the building. (I would ordinarily reprise what ground we're ceding with McCain but there is no shortage of Chicken Little diaries on RedState that do it better than I.)

Simply put, we need a Republican president to stop the Pelosi/Reid/Soros steamroller in its tracks, and I look forward to digging in and helping. Meanwhile let's keep the pressure on our incumbent GOP kleptocrats to shape up or hit the bricks.

President's Questions by justatron

I find myself really digging the idea of a "President's Questions" interaction with Congress and weekly press conferences. I'd love to watch Murtha or Kerry or Schumer try to attack a President McCain in front of cameras. And the press conferences would give McCain a chance to control the media cycle much more effectively that Bush's strategy of lettting the press say whatever they want and try to ignore it.

"Facts are stubborn things."

I will even go so far as to say that, all in all, John McCain is a conservative. And when it comes to fighting the GWOT, I think he was the strongest candidate in the field. Despite his opposition to Gitmo, he stood firm, fast and outfront on issues like the surge and victory in Iraq when the other potential GOP nominees were relatively silent.

And unless anyone thinks I am insulting or misrepresenting the others GOP candidates, I am not. I think they all (with the exception of Ron Paul) want victory and wanted the surge to work. But John McCain was the one who essentially staked his candidacy on it.

For that, I give him credit.

I honestly think there will be many things about the McCain Administration that conservatives will like; including judges, government spending, and victory in Iraq. Even in terms of taxes, he may not have always voted for a tax cut but in all his years in Congress he has never voted for a tax increase. But there will be a fair amount that we will be upset about; including cap-and-trade.

The good thing about John McCain is that when he "goes off the reservation," we concervatives will not be mute about it. That's something that was dangerously lacking about the current Administration. And us conservatives getting back our voices during the McCain Administration should be good not only for the Republican party and the conservative movement, but also for the nation as a whole.

Proudly supporting John McCain for President 2008!

Where would such a question and answer session be held? My understanding is that the President is only allowed on Capitol Hill once a year for the SotU address.

But the President is in no way "only allowed on Capitol Hill once a year for the State of the Union address." The POTUS can go anytime he wants.

I've spent an hour by MNConservative

trying to figure out why I thought that. I stand corrected. Thanks!

If only "so called Republicans" were as intelligent and realistic as you we would win in November. As it is, the fat @sses like Levin and Limbaugh are doing all they can to sabotage McCain because he supports "cap and trade".

As if in the middle of three wars, a Supreme Court turning over, taxes, nationalization of the entire economy, and allowing the liberals to dominate society for a generation is not just a tad more important than FREAKING GLOBAL WARMING...

"Small town folks get bitter after which they cling to guns or religion, or antipathy to people who aren't like them, or anti-immigrant sentiment, or anti-trade sentiment."

Understanding by Ohioan

See I don't think that will help (if you are "intelligent and realistic" you would just shut your pie-hole and get in line behind McCain. I think RS and conservatism in general has to be realistic about how excited McCain can make us. I almost think money should be spent to build one of those sound-proof chambers that everyone can go in from time to time and just curse/scream at whatever idiocy (flavor of the week right now: Global Warming Cap and Trade) he decides to pull out. At least during the election. So I'd say be more understanding of the needed venting - and then we might go "right all that good stuff" and "oh that empty suit he's running against" and get back to work.

Though I fully agree - once he's elected it will be to our inestimable benefit to have our conservative voices heard loud and clear - even during an administration when we have "our" Pary's head in charge.

Getting excited about McCain? by Calvin of Geneva

There are many emotions that John McCain might evoke. However, in my opinion, "excitement" is not one of them.
