Boehner Rallies Republicans, Plans to Continue Protest for Two More Weeks

'An extraordinary challenge demands an uncommon response,' says GOP leader

(Note: Follow developments from the House floor at twitter.com/RobertBluey.)

The House GOP’s energy protest, which has captivated Capitol Hill since last Friday, won’t end anytime soon. Minority Leader John Boehner said in a memo to Republicans tonight that members should make plans to return to Washington over the next two weeks.

The nationwide House GOP energy protest is making history, and we are writing to announce that the Call to Arms will continue. And with your help, we will keep the pressure on the Speaker until she gives the American people the energy vote they want, need and deserve. Republicans will not rest until we have an honest, up-or-down vote on the American Energy Act.

Boehner said Republicans are “united with the American people” and standing firm against Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s decision to leave town for a five-week paid vacation rather than vote on the GOP’s comprehensive bill to lower gas prices and increase American energy. Pelosi is using the recess to promote her new book.

Republicans who haven’t returned to Capitol Hill are aggressively pushing their “all of the above” energy bill, known as the American Energy Act. The legislation includes much-needed energy production and drilling, but also emphasizes conservation and innovation.

Boehner’s memo stressed the importance for members to indicate their availability for any days they could be in Washington during the next two weeks, Aug. 11-22. The Democratic National Convention begins the following Monday, Aug. 25.

The memo concludes:

Again, this is not a request made lightly. But the American people are suffering. They’re faced with an extraordinary challenge, and an extraordinary challenge demands an uncommon response. Your spontaneous efforts have offered a glimmer of hope for working families, small businesses, seniors, schools, charities and others throughout our country who are being pummeled by sky-high gas prices. We must build on this opening, and keep building on it until the American people have been heard.

More than 65 members have already returned to do their part. With nearly 200 in the GOP conference, there should be plenty to keep this protest running strong.

guess I’ll take a road trip to watch history and my Congressman,Mike Pense. He was home today in Anderson,In.at a townhall meeting that outlined the revolt in the Capital as well as the reason for the revolt. The plan they want to introduce for a vote is fair and would pass.

    Washington here I come.

be terribly disappointed. I do wish you luck though – just don’t expect miracles. The whole process is worse than pumping gas and you will be dismayed and depressed after the encounter.

Yes, Congress is worse than you ever thought! Hey, good luck though…heh.

Boehner, of course, spent the last few days not with his colleagues in the house protesting but instead on the golf course. He shot an 85 – excellent work.

Procedural stalling of a vote is not the optimal way to legislate but it’s a tradition that both parties have used in the past. In fact the republicans blocked an initiative by the democrats (which had majority support) to force the oil companies to drill on land they already own just this last week. (also blocked: minimum wage increases, habeas corpus for foreign nationals at Guantanamo, no confidence on Alberto Gonzales, etc.)

The real issue in not who’s more despicable amongst the party leaders. The question is whether it’s more appropriate to support further leases to oil companies or not. I expect to read a defensible argument when I open this site not just rallying cries.

Maryland (land of high taxes) and spent several (too many) days in downtown DC watching the governmental process… Mercy, I wish I had never been present..

So my reflections may be biased by my presence in their company, but at least take precautions… Downtown DC is dangerous territory… If you get by that, there are wonderful outdoor eateries (and especially great places for drinks)… Other than that, I can NOT recommend Georgetown or any other lovely place surrounding DC.

They did have wonderful bike trails, but travel them at your own risk (today)…

“The bill is sponsored by Connecticut Sen. Chris Dodd and Illinois Sen. Dick Durbin.
The Obama campaign says it calculated that 68 million acres of leased land remain untouched, compared with the 1.5 million acres that President Bush would like to see opened to exploration in the Alaska National Wildlife Refuge.
The majority of these unexploited acres are currently inaccessible by pipeline and much of the land has dubious production value.”

    Don’t worry, you’ll get more.

Got lost in downtown DC. Finally had to ask for directions to the nearest freeway. Thankfully, found a roaming police cruiser and ask him how to get to the beltway. Well, although surprised that I was in the area, he ask me to follow him to the freeway (actually, he was wondering what I was doing in that area). He later told me that I was lucky to have survived going through the area that I was in…

That was the last time I went anywhere in DC except specific areas (usually Georgetown areas – nice restaurants).

So, be aware that there are specific areas that are considered off-limits and well deserved so…the police stay away from these areas…

not Leftist talking points. But thanks for playing anyway.

  • dbecraft

cogent comments, could you not at least change you moniker from BS to say SB…?

  • bs

    them’s my initials…such is life.

  • dbecraft

I am laughing while I’m writing this.. heh. It was just such a shock that someone with those initials requesting no BS responses… Sorry..

…I expect to see a general lack of attitude over our inexplicable refusal to fight battles on your terms. Guess who wins this particular battle of expectations?

So, lose {said attitude}, and apologize to the board for displaying it here. Next post: and none of this “sorry if you were offended” nonsense, either.

My congressman’s staff is expecting me at noon. (He spoke earlier this week.) If anyone else is heading to the Capitol, I’ll be the one with three kids in tow. The little guys are better behaved than your average Code Pink/Move On demonstrators, so I hope to catch at least a little of the proceedings.

  • lwestreich

I don’t excuse the democrats for procedurals blocks and I concede the point the offshore is an option so I’m pretty sure we’re not on ‘my terms’. Do you have an argument about energy policy or are you spinning your wheels?

You can look for an apology elsewhere if dissecting an argument in a dispassionate way offends you.

And blooch – fair enough. I’ll come back.
