UPDATE — Aug. 15, 3:19 p.m.: Reps. Doc Hastings (Wash.), Ray LaHood (Ill.), Frank Lucas (Okla.) and Thomas Petri (Wis.) signed the letter. Click here for an update to this post.
A majority of House Republicans have made their way back to Washington to take part in the energy uprising in the U.S. Capitol during the August recess. Even more have signed a letter opposing an extension of the offshore drilling ban.
The joint effort by Reps. Jeb Hensarling (R-Tex.) and John Shadegg (R-Ariz.) to obtain signatures for the letter is yielding impressive results. However, there are still 52 House Republicans who have not signed it.
Unlike the Senate, where Gang of 10 facilitators like Sens. Saxby Chambliss (R-Ga.), Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) and Johnny Isakson (R-Ga.) are trying to have it both ways — signing the letter and supporting wrongheaded policy — there’s no excuse for House members.
Below is the list of the 52 Republicans who have not yet signed. (Click here for the Senate list.)

Gang of 10 vs Gang of 14
bk Thursday, August 14th at 3:03PM EDT (link)The Gang of 14 judicial
screw jobdeal was designed to create a filibuster-proof block. But this Gang of 10 energy-killingdeal does not provide such protection. The House is going to pass a bill that pretends to allow drilling, except that the conditions will never be met, whereas the pork in the bill will be golden. The key therefore is what happens in the Senate. If the same BS bill comes up for a vote it will pass, but will they be able to gain cloture? There are what - 45 Republicans not in the Gang of 10 who could kill anything if they stay united.Apparently they're incapable of recognizing a winning hand.

keithcd Thursday, August 14th at 3:27PM EDT (link)I’m not surprised the list is so long. They’re out there listening to their constituents. Yeah right. If they don’t come down on the right side of this issue then hopefully the electorate will light a fire under their collective arses.

You'll Notice That There Are a Lot of CA Reps on That List
IJB Thursday, August 14th at 5:31PM EDT (link)I don’t know how true it is, but the perception is that, in CA, being for offshore drilling will get you defeated for reelection, even in “GOP” districts.
It looks like we’re not going to test that proposition this year, because I’m betting the CA Reps on that list will never show up (though, if it actually came to a vote, I’d bet most of them would vote yes).

Frank Lucas shouldn't be on this list
Jenn_Sierra Thursday, August 14th at 6:42PM EDT (link)I was able to confirm with a staffer for Frank Lucas on August 7th that he is supporting the revolt in D.C., and is there when he can be (between previously-scheduled events at home), and will definitely be there to to vote for the AEA if Congress is called back into session. Here’s a press release from him on the subject from just before Congress let out.
Thanks

AJSHOPE Thursday, August 14th at 8:54PM EDT (link)I can’t believe that Deborah Pryce (I voted for her) and Dave Hobson (my wife’s representative) both haven’t signed it yet. Both of them represent conservative districts so I know that the people they represent would want them on board.
Ramstad is a liberal Republican
walter_hanson Friday, August 15th at 7:57AM EDT (link)Jim Ramstad is a liberal Repbulican who likes getting the support of the environmental wackos. He went and got the support of the Sierra club. Fortunately he’s retiring.
What might make an interesting project for red state is those open races (like Ramstad’s seat) is do both candidate support more drilling or no drilling. That might give us an idea how the 2009 Congress will vote.

I called Ray LaHood's local office.
Brian Hibbert Friday, August 15th at 8:40AM EDT (link)The staff that answered the phone was not aware of this letter, but said that LaHood does support opening up offshore drilling. He said he doesn’t know any reason why LaHood wouldn’t sign it, but since he didn’t have the letter he can’t give a definite yes.
The guy asked who was circulating the letter and said he’d look into it.
He will “pass my comments along” and have the congressman send me a response.
Socialism doesn’t work. It looks nice on paper, but it’s been tried and it’s failed miserably every time (usually accompanied by widespread death and suffering).
