Romney to Headline Economic Hearing

Republicans Renew Call for Citizens to Submit Stimulus Ideas

The first major policy battle of President-elect Barack Obama’s administration will set the tone for the next year for the Republican minority. With that in mind, House GOP Whip Eric Cantor (R-Va.) is pulling out the big guns.

Former GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney will testify at 10 a.m. Thursday at a hearing on Obama’s economic stimulus ideas. Romney brings to the table business experience from his days at Bain Capital. He’s also known for his effective management of the Salt Lake City Olympics, which he rescued from scandal and disarray.

Cantor has put together the hearing at Obama’s invitation for Republicans to offer their ideas for stimulating economic growth. Democrats held their own hearing last week open only to committee chairman and five sympathetic witnesses.

Republicans want to take the conversation a step further. Cantor has invited citizens to submit their suggestions for promoting economic growth. He’s opened his website for public comments and asked Americans to use YouTube to record videos with their ideas. (In addition to posting on YouTube, you can send the raw video file to gopwhip@gmail.com.)

Cantor cannot fight this battle alone. For conservatives to have any chance of stopping Obama’s shovel-ready stimulus, they will need to engage in this battle. Sending your video submissions is a critical component. If you need need ideas, I’d strongly encourage you to read the work of my Heritage Foundation colleagues about tax relief and budget reform.

… success. The strategic application of pressure where the press cannot ignore it. Right now the Democrats are in full campaign press mode. No facts and lots of blustery fluff to say they are taking action.

The only way of fighting that is with solid factual discussion of alternatives. This will apply pressure. Going along to get along will not help. Going on offense with what will really work is how to do it!

I am a proud member of the Heritage Foundation. I read their website often. If there is an issue, I look to the many members who write with the idea of “what would Reagan do.” This is not a 2 man foundation, they have so many conservative ideas, research and suggestions as to what alternative solutions can be offered on almost every issue today. Why do so many Republican Senators and House members ignore them as they don’t exist? I’ve often thought that if you may be perplexed about something, look at the many and varied contributions offered by Heritage. Why is that so hard for Republican’s to understand? They have conservative solutions. Isn’t that what so many of us have gotten to believe, we are not the party of answers and solutions?

for stimulating the recovery of the economy through business. Lower the capitol gains tax and other overhead so that business can get to work generating profits.

No boondoggle projects and eliminate the eco-lunatics that tie up projects.

And…drill for oil and start nuke plants while possibly funding some research for the greenies to keep them happy.

…we’re all going to agree that the free market should lead, and government should get out of the way.

Liberal politicians don’t accept those ideas. They don’t want them because they can’t buy votes. Same goes for liberal voters. It’s not “how can you make it easier for me to fend for myself” with them. It’s, “what are you going to do so I don’t have to take responsibility for myself?”

Our ideas are “old” ideas. The fact that they work is irrelevant, it’s not what people want.

to see Mitt Romney displaying brilliance so often and know that he should be the president-elect right now. We need conservative principles now more than ever, and we have to wait. At least the Congressional Republicans are looking to the right person to shore up the foundation of the GOP as we prepare for the 2009 governor battles in NJ and Virginia and the all-important 2010 mid-term elections.
