Fred is back behind the desk (without the cigar) for a little serious talk about the direction of this country:

I wish John McCain would make the Clinton “tax break” comparison. That’s good stuff.
Otherwise, (and I’m a huge Fred fan) I don’t see the point of this RNC-sponsored video. I don’t think undecided independents are asking themselves, “I wonder how Fred Thompson is voting?”. And it’s not like Tennessee needs some shoring up for McCain (he’s up 13 as of two weeks ago).
Maybe the point is, despite what Fred said in Arizona yesterday, to remind conservatives what could have been. For all his cons (and Jon Stewart’s hilarious Foghorn Leghorn jokes) we could have nominated a guy who talks about principles, not policies, and who does a surprisingly effective job talking about this election with historical context that is simplified, but not simplistic.
But I still have faith in the process, if not all of its participants. I think the party nominated a great man and a decent candidate, and I hope and pray that he wins on November 4.
(And then makes Fred the AG.)

Change Jar Conservative (Diary) Friday, October 24th at 11:38AM EDT (link)In different circumstances, Thompson would have made a great VP pick.
If McCain wins, he would be a great person to have in the administration somewhere.

Fred would have won
E Pluribus Unum (Diary) Friday, October 24th at 12:16PM EDT (link)Dang, I HATE this sort of thing. Outstanding video, which just serves to remind us of what could have been.
Thanks, gutless Repubs, purple state primaries, and the Treason Media.

KSig44 Friday, October 24th at 12:22PM EDT (link)I wasn’t a big Thompson fan but he has changed me with this. The whole election and what we are voting for couldn’t be summed up any better than this video. I wish teh RNC would buy a 30 minute spot and play this and a 15 minute spot for McCain and Palin to play after Obama. A lot of independants would listen to this. It’s not scare tactic, it’s genuine concern.
Why does your boy come off so badly in public?
Alberta (Diary) Friday, October 24th at 12:35PM EDT (link)His videos are great, when hes just talking hes good, but when the guy has to give a speech its bad. Plus he is an actor, so he should be good at this stuff. Whats with that?
He should get a show like Huck did.

so that makes him a bad candidate?
E Pluribus Unum (Diary) Friday, October 24th at 2:25PM EDT (link)First, I reject your premise – I saw some speeches and other public appearances, and I disagree that my boy “come[s] off so badly in public”.
Second, that ain’t the main thing anyway. McCain is not exactly “mister speech”, nor is he “mister charismatic” or “mister warm and fuzzy”. So then is “your boy” a worthless candidate?

Alberta, you obviously missed Fred's speech
janis (Diary) Friday, October 24th at 2:39PM EDT (link)at he RNC. It was a barnburner. As to your comment that “he’s an actor, he should be good at this stuff.” There’s a whole lot more riding on getting a political speech right the first time than being able to have multiple takes until you get it right in a movie or TV show. Lot more pressure on the first scenario.
When Fred is dealing in politics, he’s not acting, he’s the real deal.

Well Big Macs my boy by default, so...
Alberta (Diary) Friday, October 24th at 4:50PM EDT (link)I mean, you dont need to tell me Big Macs flaws.
Listen Im not trying to be a jerk, I actually like Fred a lot, but for the guy who was suppose to be the next big thing, he fizzled. You can yell and scream at me all you want for pointing out this fact, but this doesnt change it.
Again, Freds a good guy, a smarty, all that. But he flopped. All I was trying to say is ‘how did this guy flop so bad?’. I mean, You dont win new battles by ignoring the mistakes made in the previous one, so this attitude that some Fred heads have that their guy was so good is curious. If Fred was this good why didnt he show it? If you ask me, I think a lot of people where turned off from him because of all the GHG UGH THROAT CLEAR every 3 seconds when he was campaigning. To be perfectly honest with you, he came across as a little disinterested, at least to me.
I just dont understand this idea that Fred is the greatest and we would be winning by 10 points if he ran. Fred is clearly a good guy to have campaigning for another guy. He just, to me, didnt show that he was that good at campaigning for himself.
Sir, my concern is not whether God is on our side; my greatest concern is to be on God’s side, for God is always right.

Well, that's your opinion
E Pluribus Unum (Diary) Friday, October 24th at 5:02PM EDT (link)And it doesn’t make you a jerk or anything else like that. It only makes you wrong and misguided. He was and remains all that and a bag of chips.
His fizzle was in large part caused by some early mistakes, fair enough, but they were survivable. But it was all amplified by a media shutout and a series of early primaries all located in purple states with a media cheering for McCain to win. Not friendly territory for a conservative.

A Voice For The People
RepublicanRoots Saturday, October 25th at 9:55AM EDT (link)Sen. Thompson continually shows why he is one of the most courageous and knowledgeable politicians we have today.
He continues to show insight and real thought. Don’t watch this and think this is just an actor pitching.
I had the privilege of serving as Sen. Thompson political director in CA. What you see on the video is the man.
He will always have my vote.

Don’t see it as useful for much else because you wouldn’t be able to get anyone not already involved in politics and the election to sit through it – I had trouble sitting through it.
‘Course, I’m at the place now where I never want to see another political ad! There are so many of them now that the programming on my DVR is hopelessly screwed up because no shows or events start or stop on time.
