First Black Lady Republican in Congress?

I sure hope so!

Hat Tip: Instapundit – but I caught this video about Mia Love, who yesterday won a chance to topple six-term Dem representative in Utah, Rep. Matheson.

Definitely go see it! She speaks like Marco Rubio, and it’s one heck  of an engaging and charismatic way to give a speech! Comments in the Washington Times reflect that the speech itself put her over the top. Also, I remember reading about her in the National Review a few months ago – she has a Rubio-esque story to tell as well.

Man, fact is, outside of the top of the ticket these days, we (Conservatives/Republicans) have a lot of great people with great stories to tell. Christie Noem, Palin, Jindal, Rick Perry, Chris Christie, Nikki Haley, Kelly Ayotte (Sen from NH), Gov. Susana Martinez of NM, Gov. Walker of Wisconsin, Gov. Jan Brewer of AZ. Rep. Allen West.

And the beautiful thing about all these folks are – they are competent. They are values oriented. They accomplish “big things.” And the bench is DEEP. Just look at Rebecca Kleefisch, the Lt. Gov of Wisconson, and the other up and comers like Mia Love.

This new crop of conservatives take our ideology right into the opponents identity politics back yard (and their only argument left) and puts a spear to the heart of the concept.

No, we do not choose our candidates based on race or sex, but the other side does. Why not beat them at their own game by putting forward competent alternatives to the gas-bags of the Left? And that’s what is happening, and this is one conservative who’s pretty dang excited about it.

As Mrs. Love says in her speech, we are the Shining City on the Hill – now let’s win us some more elections!

What a right-on Gal. And sweet, nice, level headed.
I will very much look forward to seeing more of this outstanding Lady.
    Yeah, impressed.

We need 100 more just like her!

I would take a Mike Lee over a Marco Rubio any day of the week.

I just hear Reagan, every time I hear Rubio speak.

Contrary to most on this site, I cannot stand Marco Rubio. And I hate that he is a great speaker, because people follow him.

He wants a world policeman foreign policy in the mold of Lieberman, McCain and Graham. http://www.nationaljournal.com/2012-presidential-campaign/accepting-the-neocon-torch-marco-rubio-20120425
That is not an America-first foreign policy, it is a policy of debt and more wars. We need a common sense foreign policy, like the one Reagan actually employed. Reagan was not a neocon.

Likewise, he is an internationalist who is weak on immigration.

Finally, he is simply not a tough warrior for small government. What does he ever do? Does he ever filibuster bills like Rand Paul or Mike Lee? Rubio is worthless when it comes to standing up for the Constitution.

I mean, I agree, he believes America has a stronger place in the world and doesn’t agree we should be isolationist. But, I haven’t seen any evidence that he’s ready to go rushing us off to war anytime soon.

His immigration plans, so far, are by many considering to be doing a fine job of “threading the needle” – which is to say, being open enough so that, people like me, who feel we should have a more friendly and open LEGAL immigration policy, combines with not allowing people to “skip to the front” – yet accommodates those children, who no fault of their own might be asked to get bounced to a country they have no idea about – or possibly the ability to speak the language.

Ultimately, Rubio hasn’t completely articulated the policy and hasn’t introduced it to a bill. But, Latinos are a more natural constituency of the Republicans – and though I am not for Amnesty, and I was screaming as loudly as anyone back in 2006, this Conservative would like to see the Republicans work towards a sensible immigration policy.

It sounds like Marco Rubio *is* a Republican in the mold of Goldwater and Reagan, not froot loops like Paul.

          • gekster

            Eventualy, it all comes out.
            They can’t help themselves.
            Too much pot, or kettle.

With a common sense foreign policy that is not dangerous, that neither Marco Rubio or Ron Paul seem to embrace.

Rubio: dangerous because he is trigger happy
Paul: dangerous because he would never pull the trigger

That said, it is discomfiting that Rubio has been so gung ho about missions abroad (like Libyan, Egyptian, Sudan, and Syrian intervention) which do not particularly benefit us.

I’d like to see more action on Rubio’s part, but he has been a mild disappointment (though not a tremendous one, at least not yet).

          • brand

I haven’t been thrilled, exactly with the missions abroad tendencies either. On the other hand, he hasn’t really advocated boots on the ground either.

The world expects us to be a leader, as opposed to this “lead from the back” nonsense. Leading doesn’t necessarily mean “send troops in”.

She won enough at the caucus to become the nominee straight out.

I was hoping that Carl Wimmer would win, but Mia Love is no slouch. She’ll be one to watch in a legislative role.

Mia Love got over 60% of the delegate votes at the nominating convention. That means, per the rules of the Utah Republican Party, there will be no primary contest. Wimmer is out.

    Thank you.

      thanks for telling me, lol

That was a fabulous speech. She is exactly the kind of new leadership we need to send to Washington. She holds out hope as someone who could wake up many other blacks and bring them into our party. Loved it.

    Some comments on Matheson…

Matheson will have *zero* problem with Name Recognition in his new district, While the new 4th only includes 30% of his old district, there are also considerable pieces of it that he represented from 2000 to 2002. I haven’t seen an estimate of how much of the 4th in total he has ever represented.

Also, his father was once Utah Governor and his brother was once Utah Attorney General (and has been appointed to the Federal Bench now).

From what I’ve seen on various left wing boards, he probably gets the most slack of *any* Democratic member of Congress. They *know* that even if he could be successfully primaried from the left, that person would lose in November.

Seriously. ;) I get enough for the media, I have a hard time not having to ham-fistedly grab a bottle of aspirin to arrest the induced heart attack that comes from reading Lefty screed.

Anyway – I believe Ms. Love is going to get a LOT of outside attention in this race – and money. I will gladly send a twenty spot her way. And, I fully expect the Left to go all-out against her, like they do every African American/black who dares leave their plantation.

Love or hate Michael Steele, but I am from Virginia and had to hear the various names he was called as the LT. Gov of Maryland when he was running for the Senate. It was SHAMEFUL.

But, enough with the negatives – Ms. Love brings SUCH a positive message. My Lordy – she’s infectious, spot on, and charismatic. You know, everything current Black Leadership (Sharpton, Farrakan, Jesse Jackson, et al) are NOT.

If she defeats Matheson, she could really be a rising star in the Republican party. I was very impressed listening to her, and her record so far is good. Good luck Mia!
