Biden: Spending Vote Gives GOP a Weapon Against Democrats

And a Lesson for Democrats from 1993

I’ll give Joe Biden this: he is making me seriously re-examine my pre-election statements that he was a terrible pick for Vice President. Did you know he went to the House Democratic retreat the other day, and warned them that their vote for the Obama-Reid-Pelosi debt bill would be used against them in 2010?

Democratic Members and staff were grumbling about the path that the House-passed stimulus measure had taken in the Senate, where a coalition of moderates from both parties worked to strip politically embarrassing spending items that House Democrats approved, several senior Democratic aides said.

Others were frustrated that Republicans appeared to be winning the messaging war over the package, having hijacked the debate by focusing on those items. That was a sentiment echoed by President Barack Obama on Thursday night in a campaign-style speech that sought to put the party back on offense by taking sharp aim at GOP critiques.

Still, some House Democrats were quietly wondering what took the president so long, since they have spent the past two weeks taking fire over the measure.

“Everyone is really unhappy on the messaging,” one senior Democratic aide said. “Members are apparently getting beaten up badly on the package at home and don’t think the president is doing enough to sell it…”

Vice President Joseph Biden, addressing Democrats earlier in the day, offered an assessment more in line with what several who support the package fear: that their votes could become a political liability.

“If it works, as I’m absolutely convinced it will … when we do, I’m sure you’re gonna be nailed in ads, ‘Well they voted on that’ 30-second ads,” he said.

Well, Barack Obama picked him because he tells hard truths: Obama’s youth and inexperience will invite serious challenges from American enemies; Hillary Clinton would have been a better vice presidential pick; and, the Obama-Reid-Pelosi debt spending plan will be a political millstone for the Democrats who support it.

But while Biden may sound like a wet blanket, I have good news for Congressional Democrats. If this vote turns out like Bill Clinton’s 1993 budget package (as plummeting poll numbers suggest), there is one thing Democrats can do to protect themselves against defeat in 2010. They can vote against it. When Bill Clinton’s unpopular budget package passed in August, 1993, 41 House Democrats voted against it. Of those 41, just 6 were defeated in the 1994 election.

So Congressional Democrats who want to stay in office past next year’s elections might want to take a lesson from history: if you vote against this package you have a chance; if you vote for it, you might join Marjorie Margolies-Mezvinsky in the history books.

He knows so much of what they stand for is vile and occasionally he is compelled to speak the truth.

So to blazes with Joe Biden.

What I’ve seen of Joe Biden shows me he’s a politician who still has a conscience and has internal struggles between right/wrong.

He doesn’t listen to it or follow it, but it occasionally seizes control of his tongue and evidence of the conflict spills out for all to see.

It’s sad and entertaining all at the same time

Are we talking about the “Senator from NBMA?” The former senator that has catered to special interest groups? The former senator whose sons serves as lobbyists for firms and industries that were affected by the Juniciary Committee that Biden was a part of? The pious Catholic por-abortion Joe Biden? The Joe Biden who gets the pulse of the voters at Kathy’s Cafe? That Joe Biden has a conscience? Who ever wudda guessed?

Someone who runs their mouth constantly will say something intelligent from time to time. Think of Biden in the same vein as monkeys typing and one producing Hamlet.

but I think it is more of a case of he has a big mouth and I am glad he does – most of the time, the times where this could be bad is when he speaks to others around the world, he could really cause wars with his stupid big mouth – but for the most part it is funny when he tells on Obama and his plans.

I know this is a Congressional blog, but I have few minutes to comment before Little Smagar demands my attention again. So…

I fear that Senate Republicans won’t lead aggressively enough, once Collins/Snowe/Specter come out in support of the bill. Senatorial courtesy and all that. Plus, MSM reporters will make sure that any questions they ask of the GOP’s most effective spokesmen against the “stimulus” (Coburn, Graham, McCain) will be phrased in such a way that any GOP criticism of the stimulus will be depicted as betrayal of Specter/Snowe/Collins personally. Senators being collegial and all that, they’ll be tempted to hold their fire.

Michael Steele should not be so tempted. He cannot be.

SOMEONE needs to be breathing fire and anger over the sight of Democrats taking money from our children.

The MSM— which seems to have taken Obama fantasy to unhealthy levels —will try to help Obama by forcing the GOP Senate to blunt its public critcism of the deal.

So, someone else must lead us. Someone else must be a standard bearer around which we can rally our rage at the pillaging of our children’s futures and the disregard of our responsibility as adults.

That someone needs to be able to command a national audience.

For now, at least, Michael Steele needs to step forward. We need to hear his outrage in full-throated vigor.

Little Smagar will be broke soon.

O/T but just wanted to say that I had the opportunity this morning to hear Gov. Bobby Jindal speak at our monthly Saturday morning Wal-Mart meeting. He’s such a natural, warm, gifted, speaker with a great sense of humor.
He’s going to be speaking at a fundraiser tonight in Fayetteville and I’m trying to get a ticket.

I figured that, somehow, we’d find a way to derail this bill. It’s just so bad. But, it looks like it will go through.

Can anyone explain to me why Collins and Snowe are doing this? Are the poeple of Maine addicted to pork? Do they rely on government jobs and handouts?

Good God. What’s my son going to do? My wife and I have savings, and we’ve planned for the eventual demise of Social Security. So we’ll be fine.

But what about my son? This economy will be trashed by the time he leaves high school.

How will my wife and I look him in the face? What will we say to him?

Can’t the real GOP Senators—not these three—use procedural methods to block up this bill? Yes I know that’s desperate—-but we may have to consider desperate measures.

I am afraid however there is no stopping them – it is a matter of fighting them as hard as they/we can and letting them own the mess they create and not let them get away with calling any of this crap bipartisan – we must educate our fellow citizens that only a slim few of all of the Republicans voted for this mess. The only hope I am holding out is some of the democrats get scared about their vote and just say no – I think this is our only hope to stop this.

which this “stimulus” will hasten before we can start over.

That is what it will take.

A MadMax world of survival of the smartest and strongest.

A world where the libs will be destroyed.
