WPost: Why Do Democrats Hate DC Students?

Liberal Cruelty Aimed at Poor African-American Kids

My colleague Rob Bluey wrote the other day about the cruel move by Congressional Democrats to kick nearly 2,000 D.C. students out of private schools and back into the city’s failed public schools. Today the Washington Post calls Democrats out for their cruelty and their fealty to the unions:

REP. DAVID R. Obey (Wis.) and other congressional Democrats should spare us their phony concern about the children participating in the District’s school voucher program. If they cared for the future of these students, they wouldn’t be so quick as to try to kill the program that affords low-income, minority children a chance at a better education. Their refusal to even give the program a fair hearing makes it critical that D.C. Mayor Adrian M. Fenty (D) seek help from voucher supporters in the Senate and, if need be, President Obama.

Last week, the Democrat-controlled House passed a spending bill that spells the end, after the 2009-10 school year, of the federally funded program that enables poor students to attend private schools with scholarships of up to $7,500. A statement signed by Mr. Obey as Appropriations Committee chairman that accompanied the $410 billion spending package directs D.C. Schools Chancellor Michelle A. Rhee to “promptly take steps to minimize potential disruption and ensure smooth transition” for students forced back into the public schools.

We would like Mr. Obey and his colleagues to talk about possible “disruption” with Deborah Parker, mother of two children who attend Sidwell Friends School because of the D.C. Opportunity Scholarship Program. “The mere thought of returning to public school frightens me,” Ms. Parker told us as she related the opportunities — such as a trip to China for her son — made possible by the program. Tell her, as critics claim, that vouchers don’t work, and she’ll list her children’s improved test scores, feeling of safety and improved motivation.

Democrats tell us that conservatives are cruel and heartless; that we show no compassion towards the children of America. They tell us that when conservatives run the government, they have tried to deny kids a good education. They tell us that in the increasingly competitive world marketplace, kids need a good education now more than ever. Yet just weeks after taking charge of both Congress and the White House, they’re kicking thousands of kids out of the best schools they’ll ever see, and forcing them back into some of the nation’s worst. And they’re doing so without even giving these kids the benefit of a hearing.

As Rob pointed out, it’s clear that Washington Democrats are owned lock, stock and barrel by the teachers’ unions — which would rather not have to compete against private schools for the right to educate your children. And they have no problem doing this to a cohort of kids who are 99 percent minority.

Do you suppose they would have been so cruel and cavalier to the kids of their limousine liberal supporters in San Francisco or Boston?

…but the parents of these kids probably all voted for Obama and Elanor Holmes Norton and will continue to vote Dem for the remainder of their lives so IMO they get what they deserve.
    “Stupid is as stupid does.”

It will be the parents decision to enrol them in the public schools again.
The parents are not victims forced into anything. If Ms Parker is frightened she should not enroll her child. A child does not need a trip to China to succeed in life. What the gov pays or does not pay for should not be a reason for parents to put their child in an unsafe place.

The fed gov should not be paying $7500 towards private scools.

This is an area where I disagree with some conservatives. Ensuring an educated populace is a legitimate function of government. Doing that will in fact require spending money.

Now, we can certainly discuss how much that education should cost, and exactly how it should be implemented. As a federalist, I believe any government function should be at the lowest level possible. Most education functions can be handled at the community level with the local school board.

Where I diverge from the left on this issue, has to do with educational choice. Parents should be able to select from a variety of choices, including but not limited to, public schools, charter schools, private schools, and homeschooling. All of these should be privately administered and monitored by the government for performance. Competition in education will create the greatest opportunities for students, and the best educated populace which should be the stated goal.

I find it incredibly ironic that at group of people that so adamantly claim to be about choice when it comes to life are so opposed to it when it comes to education. I doubt any of them ever even consider that, nor would most of them be able to see the irony if they did.

that is exactly what will happen if vouchers are for everyone. Private schools will lose the freedom they have, eventually everything will be public. Private schools will not stay private.
I’m sure eventually the private schools that do not want to accept gov vouchers will be “forced to” or have to close. So there will be two choices either people go under the gov or they break the law and homeschool without registering. We will lose any real choice.

This article is upsetting because we should not be presentingthe parents as helpess victims that need the gov to help them parent. This is exactly what the dems do, the present people as victims that are not.

Personally, I could care less how they’re taught, so long as they are taught. Even homeschooled kids are required to take standardized tests to ensure they are actually being educated.

As for monitoring what’s taught, I don’t think the government should ever do that. The government has a vested interest in the results, not the methods. That’s where the current system continues to go wrong.

Many states require no testing. Many parents decide to test but it is not always a state requirement. CA only require a piece of paper saying they are a private school. Many states require enrollment under or as a private school.

I disagree the gov should monitor private schools at all. The main issue is that it steps on parental rights and privacy but aside from that it opens a whole can of worms on what the performance should be and what happens if they kids fail and stuff like that. It opens the door for more regulations by the state. Special needs children will be targeted first and then it will spill to everyone else eventually.

          • NightTwister

Like I said, many conservatives disagree with me, but I believe the government has a vested interest in making sure the populace is educated, regardless of where or how they are.

than any whiny kids because they love the power and they won’t have that power without the unions….it is the UNIONS and their LEADERS that along with the Democrats REALLY HATE the minority children in the cities!
