Obama Supporter Tells GOP to Move Left

Colin Powell Weighs In

Now that you think about it, this is exactly what you would expect him to say, at pretty much exactly the time you’d expect him to say it:

The Republican Party is in big trouble and needs to find a way to move back to the middle of the country, former Secretary of State Colin Powell said Monday.

Powell said the GOP is “getting smaller and smaller” and “that’s not good for the nation.” He also said he hopes that emerging GOP leaders, such as House Minority Whip Cantor, will not keep repeating mantras of the far right.

“The Republican Party is in deep trouble,” Powell told corporate security executives at a conference in Washington sponsored by Fortify Software Inc. The party must realize that the country has changed, he said. “Americans do want to pay taxes for services,” he said. “Americans are looking for more government in their life, not less…”

He blasted radio commentator Rush Limbaugh, saying he does not believe that Limbaugh or conservative icon Ann Coulter serve the party well. He said the party lacks a “positive” spokesperson. “I think what Rush does as an entertainer diminishes the party and intrudes or inserts into our public life a kind of nastiness that we would be better to do without,” Powell said.

Here’s the thing: it sounds to me as if Colin Powell wants a genuinely moderate Republican party. He wants a party that’s less motivated by tax cuts, more accepting of government intervention in the private economy, and more willing to reach out across the aisle. He seems to be saying that that’s also what America wants.

Here’s my question to Mr. Powell: why did you vote against that guy?

but I don’t see it. Most issues on the republican side are pretty cut and dried, without any real room for give. I recently attended a conference in DC on April 18, that was a large gathering of republicans. Some had been republicans their whole life, others had switched over from the other side. We had two keynote speakers - Steve Schmidt and Meghan McCain. They both gave wonderful speeches and we definitely appreciated them taking the time to attend. It meant a lot to everyone there.

Michael Steele was invited, but refused. He had recently said a number of controversial comments regarding our group, and we would have liked to have had him there to explain more fully. We had eight legislators from Vermont. That is all.

I’m sure I’ll be accused of playing the “victim card” or whatever. But I am personally witness to a large number of republicans who are being completely disenfranchised by the current republican party. The “true conservatives” can say what they want to about our group. Maybe our votes aren’t wanted or needed. But it sure is hard to win elections when you keep pushing away votes.

How did her dad do with the whole moderate, inclusion thing? How long do you want to continue losing elections?

We lose when we go squishy. We win when we provide a CLEAR alternative to the libs. NOT when we try to make them feel wanted.

… but you win elections when more people vote for you. McCain couldn’t build a coalition so he lost.

The candidates that are going to win on a national stage are the ones that inspire the moderates AND the base.

He not only wouldn’t debate the left on much, he even agreed with them on a number of issues and almost never took a strong conservative stance on anything.

With all that, the squishes in the middle still didn’t vote for him. What more do you want from a Republican - his oath of fealty to support the left?

And any number of our representatives/senators would have been welcome. I would have loved to have had Sessions or Lott, or Hatch or Gov. Huntsman from my home state of Utah. We would have really liked it if Steele had come - he was invited. That is the point I was trying to make. There was a room full of republican voters that no elected republicans wanted to talk to.

SusieQ, I understand you need votes to win, so why didn’t it work with McCain? No one was more “bi partisan” than he. Why didn’t he attract all those independents & dem who supposedly love him so much? Look at the pattern, when we run Squishy Repubs: Ford, Dole, McCain we lose.

the libs helped nominate him becasue they knew that libs will not vote for conservatives no matter what and they wanted to sit the base down for November 4th.

All of the moderates need to really examine themselves. Either their liberal social agenda is more important or their relative fiscal conservatism is. The base of the GOP has completed this process and has chosen our priority. We are firmly seated in our priciples. Moderates need to find one and then get over it not being about them.

… as yet unimagined (by the left and the middle anyway) harm, they’ll be back soon anyway. Either way, we’re along for the grand experiment. No way to avoid the full leftist treatment now. Are you really concerned that the next couple years of Obamaism will all turn out just fine?

All we have to do is continue to tell it like it is. At times like this, it’s all you can do. People will find out in time. If they’re lucky.

Who was it who, when asked after losing an election if he’d run again, said, “No. The people rejected me. Now the people must be punished”?

People have freedom of choice, But when they’re wrong, it’s up to them to change - not the people who are right. If the voters want the wrong things, they’ll get what they’re asking for. Good and hard. All we have to do is still be here when they figure it out. 40%, 30%, 20% - it won’t matter. If you believe we’re right, it can only go one way in the end.

If through some sort of alchemy Obama manges to create peace and prosperity without inflation from policies of big government, incredible borrowing, and appeasement, then all of our efforts are naught and we will be a defunct movement.

But of course, he will do just the opposite, so we have to be waiting with a platform that is a real change from liberalism when the voters realize what a mistake they have made.

Dear Mr. Secretary......

rcov092 Tuesday, May 5th at 7:18PM EDT (link)

First, thank you for your service.

Now, yes, our party has gotten a little smaller of late. We have had a few interlopers, who had no real core principles guiding them anyway, drift off because they felt in their best interest.

The really wonderful thing about them moving on, is that now, they feel more at home, we feel better not having to deal with the petulance of their whining about “smaller, less inclusive…etc”.

Additionally, we now have room for some of the people, who left the party because they refused to accept the denigration of principles we sufered at the hands of said same interlopers.

We respect your opinions, we just do not agree to be bound ny them. The heart and soul of this party refuses to abandon the prinicples that made the party great and brought the greatest prosperity in the history of the world to our great Nation. We understand some people grow weary of responsibility, thus, the base of the Democrat party is assured a steady supply.

We, the base of the Republican party know, that the converse is true. There are plenty of us of the opposite view that treasure liberty above all else and understand that with that comes sacrifice and responsibility. We embrace that and are willing to fight to preserve the essential truth of it, thus, The base of the Republican Party is equally assured of a steady supply.

Again, we understand that some of us have no fortitude for the levels of sacrifice this may entail. It to, is an unfortunate truth.

So if you find yourself among those whose beliefs no longer follow this essential truth, we can only thank you for your service and bid you adieu (French for Pound Sand).

It is interesting how much noise is out there, telling us how wrong we are and how we have to move in their direction. Why are they trying so hard?

I’m to the point of realizing I’d rather stand with a small group for my principles, than that whole big wide world out there, which tends to collapse eventually. Nothing can be sustained without a strong foundation based on real values. Moral relativism and the flavor of the month will not hold up, but for those who prefer those choices- good luck and good riddance.

LJ "Beaglescout" Miller Tuesday, May 5th at 8:54PM EDT (link)

They are making that noise because they’re scared of conservatives. Conservatives, you see, have principles they stick with no matter what. That frightens them, because the left doesn’t believe in anything other than government, and somehow they think that government will turn everyone into perfected humans, into gods. They believe in the whole singularity myth, and they think that socialism is the way to get there. But they realize we have rigid principles that never have and never will change, and that provide a structure for all humans to live good lives. And they envy us and fear us.

the problem is with anti-discrimination in combination with gay marriage

LJ "Beaglescout" Miller Tuesday, May 5th at 8:57PM EDT (link)

because there already have been lawsuits and other consequences for priests and other clergy who refused to bless a homosexual marriage. That is the problem. Solve that if you want to find a middle way. And the next problem after gay marriage is going to be polyamorous marriage, and maybe incest after that. And these laws will be used as a wedge to allow militant atheists to bankrupt all traditional religions.

go ahead and laugh at me all you want.

But then explain to me your base can win without independents, who you despise and mock.

Or, you could explain why, under GOP control, you all managed to double the federal debt in 8 years.

Or, you could explain just how you’re going to cut taxes… again… and balance the budget.

Seriously, give me a plan.

After 30 years of voting Republican, I’m done with the BS as I can see reality isn’t part of the “new GOP”. Whatever, you don’t have to kick me out, I’ve already left. And, yeah, I get you all don’t care. Bully for you. Enjoy the “wilderness”.

I got a plan.

newagegop Tuesday, May 5th at 11:02PM EDT (link)

Here’s the plan.

1. The feds need to defend the country.

2. The states decide on everything else.

Just saying. All the folks who just MUST abort babies can continue on aborting babies in New York and California. The rest of us hicks can decide however we want to live for ourselves in our own states and own towns.

That’s how we win the independents. We let people, not judges, not federal fiat decide how they want to live and how their children are raised. We dismantle big government and we will win again.

Yeah, well, the Constitution doesn't

BlueLandRed Wednesday, May 6th at 12:00AM EDT (link)

work that way. Nor does abortion have any part in a discussion about fiscal responsibility.

And, honestly, 80% of the budget is Social Security, Medicare, DOD and interest. Go ahead and see just how many days… err.. hours… err… minutes, the GOP will remain a viable party if it’s advocates cutting any of those. Or you can try and balance the budget by cutting everything out of the remaining 20%… good luck with that.

You need a reality check.

checking reality

gonzo55 Wednesday, May 6th at 12:12AM EDT (link)

So is the $1T for high speed rail in the remaining 20%? The $700B in assorted pork projects? Of course entitlement reform is politically tricky, but it seems there’s plenty for small government folks to go after. I think the success of the tea parties strongly suggest there’s a popular mandate to get rid of this nonsense.

So cutting the budget is had, so we should give up trying? What are you, French?

“Facts are stubborn things” — Ronald Wilson Reagan

So $1T for high speed rail?? Really? No.

BlueLandRed Wednesday, May 6th at 2:05AM EDT (link)

Check your Wheaties, cause something is not right.

And yeah, there is 20% for the small government folks to go after. Cut at will, cut it all, you still won’t end the deficits. Do the math.

Also, there is a difference between long term deficits and short term ones. Whether or not Obama understands that isn’t known yet. I’m guessing we’re screwed, again. I do expect to Obama to raise taxes to pay for his malfeasance… which is only better than not paying for it… kinda like Bush and his GOP Congress, which spent like drunken sailors and never bothered to figure out how to pay for it.

So, how is the “New GOP” now different? Specifics, please.

And quite frankly, right now, every single talking head that you’re aping here, calling for “pragmatism” and “less ideology” are just like you demanding that the GOP drop its positions on not just social, but fiscal, defense, national security, civic, and justice issues and move en masse to echo the Democratic Party.

Or, you could explain why, under GOP control, you all managed to double the federal debt in 8 years.

Here is the big baloney on the so called Moderate Republicans. They always CLAIM to be fiscal conservatives and just not so conservative on social issues. HOWEVER, it is precisely on big government and taxes that they most often cave in to the democrats.

IF they really were like they claim to be I would not have a big problem with them. The truth is, if you believe in the core values of personal liberty, then more often than not you will be conservative on nearly every issue. With only a few exceptions.

But if you have little in the way of core convictions, then you are easily swayed by the arguments of the day, and thus a useful tool to the Democrats.

The Center?

1stRichard Tuesday, May 5th at 8:36PM EDT (link)

Thanks, now you have me screaming at the computer monitor again. Constitutionally we are a far right nation and that should be considered the “Center”. Over the past ten years government has almost doubled in size and now may well double in size in the next two years. This so called center keeps moving to the left in response to this, it is too far to the left for any so called conservative and can be considered totally un-American. It is supposed to be “We the People” and NOT “we the government”, why is this so hard to understand for some? What really make me mad is that I believe most RINOs will believe this malarkey. This has me so mad I would like to tar and feather these RINOs at my next Tea Party. Is this what we have to do to get their attention and get them to listen to us, “We the People”? The GOP needs to make a sharp right turn toward the real center as it was intended to be, no more pandering to the left. I am really sick and tired of holding my nose when it comes to vote trying to figure out what stinks more. We have socialism or socialism light as a choice and this is simply wrong. Everyone in the GOP who does not stand for the Constitution and Conservative values needs to be thrown under the bus, fed to the left or be tarred and feathered. Heck, I am fed up with this….

Now look what you have done, you have me so POed I am starting to rant….

Can just ONE Liberal

DerKrieger Tuesday, May 5th at 8:37PM EDT (link)

…be they so-called “moderate Republicans or Democrats please define just what “far right” is? There is an endless parade of people who claim the GOP is too far to the right but are unable to define just what that means or where it is they think we ought to be. Most of these people are Big government types regardless of party to naturally they will want small government Conservatives to change.

The entire political establishment has moved Left while we and the rest of the bulk of the country remain center right.

Left and Right are not american political divisions

LJ "Beaglescout" Miller Tuesday, May 5th at 9:10PM EDT (link)

Left and Right are both freedom hating European (French mostly) political divisions. The left are socialist, communist, or fascist. The right are royalist. Both believe that all property belongs to the ruler and all laws are but the ruler’s whim enacted for the benefit of the ruler. Everyone else is a serf, a slave condemned to live in misery and poverty on the land the ruler tells them to live on.

I am a conservative when it comes to the American foundational principles and values. And I am a real liberal. I believe in individual freedom and liberty: that’s what a liberal is. I believe in free people and free markets. I believe in God. I believe in human life. I believe that the founders were inspired by God when they wrote the Declaration, the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, and the other founding documents. And I believe that all federal officials, who take oaths to protect and defend the Constitution, must protect the plain meaning of the words of the Constitution, because any other interpretation is only making it up as you go. I believe that federal officials who behave differently have betrayed the US. I believe some of their crimes rise to the level of treason.

So are you a conservative liberal like me, or are you on the left-right axis of oppression?

“Each of us has a natural right, from God, to defend his person, his liberty, and his property.”

of “seminar” outcomes (i.e., talking points) in these concerted efforts to convince everyone but the “radical right” to abandon Republican government and embrace the new Democratic hegemony. After all, it is said, Democratic hegemony is now what all correct-thinking patriots want…right? These times of “crisis” require it…right? The radical right are just a bunch of loser/whiners…right? They are dinosaurs with no place in this 21st century of enlightened governance… right? They are just getting in the way of the new Democratic Utopia…right? They are bad and ignorant and dangerous people, that the world would be better off without…right?

The Republicans already have a big tent - it is there for all to come and join who share core principles of limited government (i.e., constitutional government), acting with personal responsibility to self, family, job and country, and who embrace open markets and voluntary commerce between free persons. All who believe that the Natural Rights of man are our birthright as human beings are welcome under the tent. Those who believe in individualism along with voluntary association with others are welcome under the tent.

Republicans do not have to move left to find such people. What is needed is a program to clearly articulate those principles, AND CLEARLY EXPLAIN THEIR LONG-TERM BENEFITS to the citizen and her/his family. Keep on articulating the principles and explaining the benefits non-stop for the next 42 months. People who love liberty will come and join voluntarily. To be successful (IMO) this needs to be a “big picture” effort. Do not allow niggling/controversial issues, for which there is no Federal role anyway, to cloud the message. Notice, the second paragraph says nothing about religion, gays, abortion, etc., etc…? Have I lost you?

Those who believe that their natural place in the world is to exist as merely a cog in the efforts of the collective will feel unwelcome under this tent, and will not join. Those who demand collective benefits for favored groups, at the expense of others, will feel unwelcome under the tent, and will not join. Those who believe in collective responsibility, collective guilt, and collective punishment for disfavored groups will feel unwelcome under the tent, and will not join. Republicans do not really want these people yet; not until they experience their “road to Damascus” moment, and decide to embrace liberty and reject slavery.

devCharles Tuesday, May 5th at 9:23PM EDT (link)

because they messed up so much the last 8 years. There’s really nothing else to it. People can claim whatever they want, but it’s pretty clear what the facts are. People left because the Republicans messed up a lot.

George W. wasn’t exactly the most conservative guy around. He grew the government a substantial amount. What did he do that was far right, anyway? The Bush tax cuts and reforms? I’m sorry, but those were definitely not far right propositions.

Incursions into foreign countries aren’t a conservative platform but one shared by both parties, so I don’t see the Iraq war as a Conservative position, but one made for a variety of other reasons. Waterboarding? I don’t see that as part of the conservative platform, but more of a national security or moral decision. Making it a partisan thing seems like obfuscating.

Not ratifying Kyoto? Look who has control of the House and Senate. They don’t have 2/3 control, but they could always put it up to a vote.

I’m not going to be the one to say that the Republicans lost because they weren’t conservative enough. I’m going to say Republicans lost because they weren’t effective enough. The degree of conservatism doesn’t enter into it.

Violence is on the rise in Iraq and Afghanistan has gotten significantly worse, and Obama isn’t calling for time tables, but his approval rates are in the 70s. Clearly something has to give.

Sorry, but I do believe the violence in Iraq is still very low and is not increasing, and Obama’s approval ratings are not in the 70’s because that would mean 50% of Republicans would approve of him. Reality for you is a little fleeting.

has been around 67%-70% with a couple points margin of error from a number of the polls I’ve seen. Yeah, it’s the very low 70s to the high 60s to be more accurate. Regardless, that’s still ridiculously high.

As for the violence: http://www.kansascity.com/451/story/1170187.html

First off,

you don’t have to be a jerk.

Second off, that story was from the AP. There are plenty like it elsewhere. This one from the BBC: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/in_depth/8030258.stm

Now, you can refute the BBC’s numbers, but their claim is that casualty rates since Obama’s inauguration have been increasing month to month. You can say that doesn’t mean anything, but the simple fact that violence has increased since Obama’s election is factual.

As to your Rasmussen Poll, Gallup has him at 67%. scarlos, below, has some evidence that Rasmussen is likely more accurate, but 67-27 is pretty different than 56-43, which is the difference from Gallup to Ramussen. Both are pretty far outside the other’s MOE, even when in conjunction. Saying Rasmussen is just correct because you, donttreadonme, happen to know because you say so is just smug.

and his approval index was at +1, which contrasts nicely with the +30 he had on election day. It goes hand in hand with the Democrat’s forfeiture of a 7-point Generic Congressional ballot lead (now a 3 point deficit).

You have to remember whose writing these polls–Rasmussen was rated the most accurate polling firm in the country, and has hit the percentages spot-on for the last 2 presidential races.

How we will win

McKinley Tuesday, May 5th at 10:16PM EDT (link)

It is conventional wisdom on this site that Obama will be an unmitigated disaster on economic and foreign policy. So why are we worrying over winning over these moderates? If people report being conservative my such a wide margin, then their opinions are so malleable that we’ll have no difficulty winning them back in 2012, provided we run a competant campaign. Many people voted against the Republican Party due to the real and imagined incompetance of the Bush Administration. No amount of positive press can hide 10% unemployment or an unstable international order, or, heaven forbid, another terrorist attack.

If the country has titled left to the point where an incompetant Obama administration can still beat a conservative candidate, it might be best to take Powell’s advice and reevaluate the saliency of the Reagan coalition. But that moment has yet to come, and social conservatism is still winning outside the Northeast in America.

If Obama proves incompetant and this party cannot defeat him, it deserves to lose.

Powell Less Relevant that Meghan McCain- if that's even possible

reaganiterepublicanresistance Thursday, May 7th at 1:09PM EDT (link)

What does Colin Powell know, anyway. He’s the nominal “Republican” that endorsed Obama, then re-assured us all that he was “qualified to be Commander-in-Chief” the week before the Russians caught Obama completely asleep-at-the-wheel and nabbed the Krgyzstani air-base that we use to fly-in most of our supplies to Afghanistan.

I don’t trust Powell an inch, he apparently feels guilty about promoting the Iraq war (but shouldn’t) and is trying to make amends.

Powell’s advice and a quarter will get you a cup of coffee at 7-11 (small). Who cares what he thinks, Obama’s programs are a guaranteed fail- and that’s all that matters in the end. There’ll be no hiding the damage Obama is doing to the county in a year or two. I love how these critics of the GOP assume everything will just work out great with trillion dollar deficits and a pacifist foreign policy-

When their pork-n-welfare spending orgy fails to create any real economic gains -but stokes vicious inflation and crashes the dollar instead- the Democrats face a bloodbath in 2010.

Barack can kiss 2012 goodbye, no matter how hard he attacks the GOP and has the MSM plant BS stories and manufactured “scandals”. His foreign policy is headed straight for an iceberg, as well.

Ironically, Powell and W did a lot of damage to the GOP brand… but Obama-Pelosi-Reid will be the ones to fix it all-up for us- already as good as done. Funny how life is.
