Reid Delays Senate Business for Specter Fundraiser

Jobs, health care, energy, deficits, Afghanistan, the general war on terror – all these are things that Congress should be working on. Indeed, Democrats are endlessly telling us that whatever priority they have cooked up, must be passed right now! But when the Senate is actually scheduled to be in session – purportedly addressing your concerns – they are delaying official business to let Arlen Specter raise money for his re-election campaign?

Reid announced Friday that the Senate would hold no votes after 3 p.m. Tuesday. His office later said that the scheduling decision was meant to accommodate a long-planned fundraiser that President Obama is headlining in Philadelphia to benefit Specter’s campaign.

The move could delay efforts to finish work on the fiscal 2010 transportation spending bill, which the Senate began considering Thursday…

Event organizers hope to raise $2.5 million for Pennsylvania Senate Victory 2010, a joint fundraising committee that will share proceeds with Specter’s campaign and the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, which is backing Specter over Sestak.

If the Senate schedule is so inconvenient for Specter and Reid, why don’t they quit? Congress took an August recess during which Specter traveled all around the State. The Senate is typically not in session on Mondays, and takes frequent days off. Would it have been so difficult for Specter to schedule a fundraiser at a time that allows him to do his work – the work that his fundraising is intended to allow to continue?

Further, I can only hope that this decision by Reid gets attention back at home. His constituents seem increasingly unlikely too return him to the Senate, and given his misplaced priorities it’s not hard to see why.

is a day closer to 2010, increasing the resistance to support any controversial legislation such as the health care bill. I welcome it.

Isn’t it funny that Democrats always think money will save them.

the less time they spend there than the less time they are screwing us – which was/is your point, to which I agree 100%. Personally, I think we should encourage Reid to send the The Senate HC “Gang Of Sicks” on a nice long deserved rest (I’d chip in funds to that cause) so another SELLOUT/COMPROMISE isn’t made at our expense.

…what with all these speeches and fundraisers. They guy is CONSTANTLY on TV. It’s like a campaign that never stops.

Of course, that’s pretty much in line with his experience. It’s no wonder he needs so many “czars”. SOMEBODY in the White House has to know what they’re doing.

      Speeches, speeches, speeches.

Even the word to me has a negative connotation. I am beginning to think it the only thing President Obama really knows how to do. Even lately, I am not even sure he is very good at that. Once you realize he is just reading what David Axelrod and Rahm Emanuel wrote on his teleprompter.

No matter how many speeches he gives, they’re not helping his poll numbers.

Saw some of the networks advertising shows that should be on tonight. Bet they’re just over the moon at the notion of giving up more network time this soon.

If they are….. Don’t believe I’ve seen any ads for the 455th Great Speech.

He was giving one this morning and I thought it was time for a bathroom break.

Wonder what the ratings for his socialist healthcare commercial on CBS last night were(guessing they were abyssmal)? Our networks ought to ashamed.

I had fallen out of the habit of listening to Rush on any regular basis. But then Comrade Obama started polluting my TV every morning about 8 AM (noon Eastern) and I can’t stand the sight or sound of him so I turned the TV off and the radio on the Rush. Like it a lot better and I don’t yell at the radio nearly as much as I yelled at the TV.

Any delay in Senate business is a good thing, even for something so mundane as a fundraiser. I also hope that the ghost does win the Dim primary vs. Joe Sestak, but just barely. A weakened Specter is the best opportunity for Pat Toomey to win in Nov. 2010. Cheers, Frank

the rest of the 8 most liberal republican US senators. Why not start with Utah’s Senator Bob Bennett?

It would be fun to see if we can raise as much for those running against the most liberal republican senators.

Running against Bob Bennett are several, including Cherilyn Eagar. (from her facebook group)

So, Obummer’s flying to another Demo fundraising event? And the US taxpayers have to pick up the costs for his transportation? Is that fair?
    .
Also, the US Senate is shut down for half the day so they can prepare for Demo Fundraising Dinner? Is this appropriate?
    .
    Whatever happened?

more tweaking of the McLame Campaign Finance BS… You know, so they don’t have to constantly keep campaigning and fundraising and can “get our business done.” Yeah Right! If they hadn’t been over-reaching on everything else they’d be grasping at this one now too. It’s coming though, always had been the original goal.

Solution — Politicians should be prohibited running for office while holding office.

This shouldn’t matter if you’re running for reelection, or another office. To run for office, you shouldn’t be holding an elective office.

You can run for as many terms as you wish, just not consecutively or without a break in between.
